- Chapter 32 - She is Mine
The two of them waited at the entrance for a long time.
It wasn’t until near noon that they finally saw Xu Xinlan emerge from inside, looking exhausted. They stood up and approached her.
Seeing that they hadn’t left yet, Xu Xinlan looked puzzled. “Why are you two still here? Your gland isn’t in any serious danger, just remember to apply the medicine on time when you get back. If there are no other issues, you can leave…”
She looked around, searching for someone. Not finding him, she couldn’t help but mutter, “Eh? Where did that male comrade who brought this lady here go?”
Lin Yishu stepped forward and explained, “That use, that man left. Dr. Xu, how is the person inside doing?”
Seeing the confusion deepen in Dr. Xu’s eyes, Li Yan added an explanation: “We know the person inside; she’s a sent down youth in our village.”
Understanding dawned on Xu Xinlan. She nodded to the two of them. “So that’s how it is. In that case, I’ll tell you, her gland has a severe tear, which is why there was heavy bleeding. Fortunately, the bleeding has been stopped. The future depends on her recovery. If she heals well, the long-term impact won’t be too great, but if she doesn’t, things could get complicated later. During this time, tell her to get plenty of rest, take her medicine on time, and keep her diet light. She needs to stay in the hospital for another two days for observation.”
The two nodded repeatedly.
Xu Xinlan continued, “The patient hasn’t woken up yet. If you want to visit her in a bit, keep your voices down. Oh, and go pay the fees first. You can find me anytime if there are issues.”
The two thanked her again. Seeing they had no more questions, Xu Xinlan stretched and took her leave.
Once she was gone, Li Yan turned to Lin Yishu and said, “I’ll go pay the fees and buy some food while I’m at it. Wait for me in the ward, and don’t go wandering off, okay?”
Lin Yishu nodded but couldn’t help but retort, “I’m not a child anymore.”
Li Yan blurted out, “In my heart, you’re just a delicate baby.”
As soon as she said it, she froze. Before Lin Yishu could react, Li Yan abruptly turned around and marched away with wide strides. As she walked, she rubbed her burning ears and used her free hand to give herself a few light slaps on the mouth.
Stupid mouth! What kind of nonsense are you babbling!
Watching the retreating figure walking with stiff, uncoordinated limbs, a smile rippled from the corners of Lin Yishu’s eyes to her lips. After a moment, she gave a soft huff.
“Hmph. Clearly a year younger than me, yet she wants to be the ‘big sister’.”
Lin Yishu pulled up a stool and sat by the hospital bed, observing the person lying there at close range. The wailing of the system in her mind had almost never ceased.
[Waaaah, XueXue, my poor XueXue! Those thugs really deserve to die! How could they lay such a cruel hand on XueXue!]
[And that Fu Sinian’s! He’s terrible! XueXue got hurt because of him, and he just walked away! ]
[XueXue, please wake up. Sob, why is XueXue so pitiful? You’re clearly the female lead! How could you suffer so much? Waaaah, XueXue, my heart aches for you…]
Listening to this, Lin Yishu sneered coldly. “So you’ve stopped pretending entirely?”
The system wiped a metaphorical tear and replied: [You’ve guessed it anyway.] There was no point in pretending anymore. This girl was so smart, even if it didn’t admit it, she already knew.
Lin Yishu let out a mocking laugh and didn’t bother to respond further. But after a while, the continuous crying in her mind made her brow twitch. Unable to bear it any longer, she said, “Can you stop wailing like you’re at a funeral? She’s not dead yet.”
The system felt aggrieved, provoked by her sharp tongue. [How can you talk like that!]
Lin Yishu continued to berate it: “Cry, cry, cry! all you know is how to cry. Any bit of good fortune she has will be cried away by you.”
The system was rendered speechless, its CPU nearly burning out from frustration. It simply didn’t understand. Why did this female supporting character act like two different people when she was in front of Li Yan versus everyone else? In front of Li Yan, she pretended to be a little white rabbit. In front of the system and the male lead… ha, her combat power was off the charts.
But it did finally stop crying.
Her head finally quieted down, and the expression on Lin Yishu’s face softened slightly as she fixed her gaze on the person on the bed again.
Yang Xueying’s eyelids trembled as if she were having a nightmare. Lin Yishu frowned and stood up. Just as she was about to lean in for a closer look, the other woman suddenly snapped her eyes open. Her eyes were filled with terror, and she abruptly sat up, pulling her knees to her chest and shrinking back.
Lin Yishu immediately stopped in her tracks. She spoke up, “What’s wrong with you?”
“Don’t come over!” The voice from the hospital bed was weak but firm, despite the visible trembling.
Lin Yishu figured she was likely traumatized by the day’s events. Thus, she took a few steps back and stopped talking, quietly waiting for her to calm down.
Yang Xueying’s memory was still stuck at the moment before she lost consciousness. Thinking of those men lunging at her with savage expressions, tears began to fall like broken strings of pearls. She hadn’t hurt anyone, why did those people want to hurt her?
She didn’t know how long she cried, but once her eyes began to ache, she messily wiped them with the back of her hand and looked at the other person in the room. When she saw that face clearly, she was momentarily stunned.
“How is it you?” she murmured.
Lin Yishu just sat there on the stool with her arms crossed, patiently waiting for her to settle. However, hearing that first sentence made her a bit dissatisfied.
“Who did you think it would be? Li Yan? Or that waste Fu Sinians?” She arched an eyebrow.
Yang Xueying’s gaze was still a bit dull. She whispered, “Did Comrade Li come as well?”
The person who had been calmly observing with crossed arms suddenly moved close. Lin Yishu leaned down, her eyes burning with intensity as she stared. “I really didn’t misjudge you. You really are harboring designs on Li Yan.”
Yang Xueying was startled by the sudden proximity, but more than that, she felt the terror of having her inner thoughts exposed. She shook her head frantically and denied in a small voice, “I… no, I didn’t. You’ve misunderstood…”
Of course, Lin Yishu didn’t believe her.
“I don’t care if you did before, but from now on.” Her eyes fixed on the person in the bed, her gaze like a sharp sword piercing through the pupils to see everything. “You are not allowed to.”
Even though Lin Yishu hadn’t released any pheromones, Yang Xueying clearly felt an invisible pressure.
“She is mine.” Lin Yishu spoke word by word, as if delivering a warning. “I don’t allow anyone to covet her. Do you understand?”
Tears suddenly welled up in Yang Xueying’s eyes. She immediately lowered her head and whispered, “I understand.”
Seeing how tactful she was, Lin Yishu said no more and sat back down.
In her mind, the system couldn’t take it anymore and wailed again. [I won’t allow you to bully XueXue! I won’t! Besides, how could XueXue have designs on that village girl? She wouldn’t! She’s not like you, blinded by some ghost possessed obsession!]
Lin Yishu retorted mockingly: “Yes, she is indeed different from me. Her taste is much worse than mine.”
The system was about to argue when the person on the bed, who had been hanging her head, sniffled and looked up. She asked softly, “Excuse me… have you seen Comrade Fu? Where did he go?”
The System: […]
Lin Yishu, sensing the system’s defeat, let out a heartless laugh. She glanced at the person on the bed and said with an ambiguous tone, “Him? He left.”
Yang Xueying hadn’t expected such an answer. She froze. Then she lowered her head to hide the fresh tears streaming from her eyes. Grievance was like a river breaking a dam, pouring out uncontrollably.
She thought that the person in front of her would probably never know how much she envied her. What kind of courage does it take to be so firmly chosen that one can say “She is mine” so openly and fearlessly? How could someone live so vibrantly and dazzlingly, like a unique sun?
You can’t win against such a person; she had known that long ago. It was just a pity to lose a good “harbor” like Comrade Li. Li Yan had such a warm family; it made one want to linger, making the thought of never being able to return home feel bearable.
Tears hit the bedsheets, blurring her vision. Yang Xueying could no longer hold it back and began to sob quietly. She had thought that even without Comrade Li, she still had Comrade Fu. But now Comrade Fu was gone too. What was she to do?
Lin Yishu frowned at the person who had suddenly started crying hysterically, not understanding what was going on. Just as she was about to ask, the ward door opened and Li Yan walked in.
“Why is she crying so hard?” Li Yan asked as she walked toward them.
Lin Yishu’s brow furrowed. If Li Yan dared to suspect that she had bullied the girl, she wouldn’t mind giving Li Yan a beating right then and there!
“Is it the pain? Should I call a doctor?” But just as she thought that, the person in front of her handed her some things and looked at her with concern. “You must be starving, right? Hurry and eat something. I’ll go call the doctor. Oh, and drink some hot water before you eat. Don’t let the cold enter your stomach. There’s hot water in the thermos; I’ve already washed the lid…”
She was a bit naggy, but it made one’s heart feel incredibly warm.
The corners of Lin Yishu’s pressed lips rose unconsciously, and the heavy items in her hands felt lighter because of her mood. Her finger couldn’t help but lightly hook Li Yan’s pinky, feeling a bit guilty for her previous thought. She shouldn’t have thought of Li Yan that way.
Li Yan noticed the finger brushing against her knuckle but assumed it was an accident, so she acted as if she hadn’t felt a thing.
When Li Yan brought Dr. Xu over, Xu Xinlan saw the red eyed girl on the bed and naturally assumed she was in pain. She walked around the bed to stand behind her. After a brief check, she said curiously, “Huh, it’s not bleeding again. It shouldn’t be…”
She lowered her head and asked softly, “Are you still in a lot of pain? You have to tell me if it hurts. I’ll help you find a way.”
Yang Xueying felt a strange scent enveloping her. There was the smell of hospital disinfectant mixed with a sweet, clear scent of oranges. She shook her head with red eyes.
Instead of being impatient, the doctor continued to ask gently, “Does shaking your head mean it doesn’t hurt?”
Yang Xueying then nodded lightly. The physical pain was minor now, she was mostly filled with deep-seated fear.
Looking at the patient who was clutching the pillowcase with eyes as red as a rabbit’s, Xu Xinlan sighed in her heart. How could it not hurt? The child is likely just enduring it.
But she had done everything she could to lessen the pain. All she could do now was have her take another painkiller after her meal. With that in mind, her gaze fell on the other two in the room.
The two over there were eating heartily.
Xu Xinlan: “…”
“Have you two forgotten there’s a patient here?” she said.
Ah, now I know why this child’s eyes are so red. Look at how pitiful she is.
Li Yan pulled something out of her pocket with a grin. “I didn’t forget, I didn’t forget. It’s right here. Her food is right here.”
Likely because of the Lunar New Year, the State Owned Restaurant next door was closed. Li Yan had no choice but to buy food from the hospital cafeteria. Fortunately, she showed her ID from the slaughterhouse, and the cafeteria auntie didn’t make things difficult, charging her the normal price.
However, during the New Year period, the cafeteria only had one window open. There was only one dish, and the staples were just corn buns and steamed white buns. Li Yan had to make do with whatever dish was available. She bought steamed white buns (Mantou) for Lin Yishu and corn buns (Wotou) for herself and the Yang youth.
When Xu Xinlan saw what was in her hand, her eyes widened. “Why a corn bun? You already bought white buns, why didn’t you buy a few more?”
Li Yan scratched her head, looking a bit embarrassed. “I didn’t bring enough grain coupons.”
She had only brought enough for herself and Lin Yishu, she hadn’t expected to have an extra mouth to feed.
Xu Xinlan: “…Then why don’t you let her have a white bun first?” She looked at the person on the bed.
Li Yan immediately shook her head. “That won’t do. Lin Yishu can’t eat corn buns. These white buns were bought specifically for her.”
Xu Xinlan fell silent.
The person on the bed spoke up at the right time. “It’s okay. I can eat anything.”
Li Yan then handed over the corn bun and gave a dry laugh. “This meal is on me, but about the medical fees I paid upfront…”
She spoke quite frankly. She worked hard for her money; being kind hearted was one thing, but she still needed to get her money back.
Yang Xueying immediately tried to reach for her pocket, but realized a moment later and said with a flushed face, “I don’t have any money on me right now.”
Li Yan waved her hand dismissively. “It’s okay, it’s okay. I didn’t mean you have to pay me back right this second. I’m just letting you know.”
Yang Xueying nodded. “Yes. Comrade Li, I will pay you back when we get back.”
Watching from the side, Xu Xinlan felt a bit uneasy. To be honest, Li Yan and Lin Yishu’s actions weren’t wrong in any way, but perhaps because the contrast was too stark, she felt the person on the bed looked quite pitiful. Oh well, since she would be at the hospital for the next two days anyway, she would just take extra care of her.
After the doctor left, Yang Xueying silently gnawed on the food in her hand, her eyes involuntarily drifting toward the other two in the ward.
Comrade Li’s face was full of indulgence, her eyes never leaving the person across from her. The person across from her took advantage of Li Yan not looking to break off a small piece of white bun and quickly stuff it into Li Yan’s mouth. Then, Lin Yishu’s eyes curved into crescent moons, showing a triumphant smile.
The sunlight hit them, turning even the dust motes into warm particles.
Yang Xueying watched blankly, feeling the emptiness in her heart grow larger and larger, as if she could never find a way to fill it.
