- Chapter 6 - The Dilapidated Hotel
◎ Do You Want to Steal My Boyfriend? ◎
Two hours remained until midnight.
Shen Weiran rummaged through the room and finally found a few newspapers, but they were soaked and decayed, making most of the writing illegible.
He handed the newspapers to He Yuput and pulled a worn-out chair to sit beside the bed. Worried that He Yuput might catch a chill from the air conditioning, Xie Jingyan wrapped him in a quilt like a triangular rice dumpling, then sat on the edge of the bed to keep him company.
He Yuput poked his head out of the quilt, revealing cat-like, clear, and soulful eyes. With a few drops of blood staining his face, his magnificent yet fragile appearance was heart-wrenching.
“The newspaper in my room was not soaked. That ghost shadow stayed in this position on the page.”
He pointed to a blurry image. “The man in the newspaper is around thirty years old, has stubble, and is smiling at the camera while holding a hoe. It looks like a daily life photo.”
Shen Weiran took the B-level prop photo. “The background of this family’s location has many earthen houses, and the path looks very remote, like it is in a village in the countryside.”
Xie Jingyan added, “Only the little girl’s clothes are relatively new. Both adults’ clothes are pilling, and the man’s jacket has several tears that have not been mended. Their economic situation is average.”
Shen Weiran speculated, “The photo must have been taken in some rural village where their family lived.”
He Yuput read the name on the newspaper, a look of confusion on his face. “This ghost shadow is called He Daniu? It sounds so familiar. I feel like I have seen it somewhere before.”
Xie Jingyan asked, “Did you see it in the newspaper in your previous room?”
“No. I remember now. When I was looking for the key earlier, I checked the information in the registration book and saw this name!”
He Yuput deliberately leaked the information to them. “Before we arrived, many people stayed in this hotel. They all shared the surname He, and the first six digits of their ID numbers were identical.”
Xie Jingyan’s gaze darkened. “In that case, the villagers who checked in probably all died, but their souls remain trapped in the hotel, and the little ghost girl can consume these souls.”
Shen Weiran said, “I feel like there is something in the rooms that restricts the little ghost girl. That door was almost smashed to pieces earlier; since she has the ability to reach that level of destruction, there is no reason she could not force her way in.”
He Yuput theorized, “Could it be that these ghosts are all afraid of water? The ghost shadow from earlier rolled on the ground in pain when splashed with water, and Xie Jingyan was able to touch it once his hand was stained with blood.”
Shen Weiran countered, “Not necessarily. The ghost shadow from earlier had water on it, but the little ghost girl was still able to eat it.”
“It is also possible that each ghost has a different weakness.”
Xie Jingyan scavenged a few boxes from the room, filled them with water, and handed them to the two men. “There are ten minutes left until twelve o’clock. We will know once we go out and experiment.”
Shen Weiran suddenly remembered that He Yuput’s life seemed to be tied to his own. If the other man died, he would die as well.
He looked at He Yuput’s pale complexion and weak state, doubting whether the other man could participate in the task of collecting Hell money.
This was the first time Shen Weiran had met Xie Jingyan, and they were only forced to join forces to clear the instance because the appearance of a god-tier prop had increased the difficulty.
The two did not actually have a deep friendship, so Shen Weiran did not want Xie Jingyan to know about his special connection to He Yuput.
One must always guard against others.
Shen Weiran said to He Yuput, “Xie Jingyan and I will go. You are injured and have limited mobility; just wait for us in the room, and I will collect your share of the Hell money for you.”
He Yuput understood exactly what Shen Weiran was thinking. He lowered his long eyelashes, concealing the emotions in his eyes.
He did not call the other man out, but still refused. “No.”
Shen Weiran assumed he was just being hesitant. “What do you mean ‘no’? Taking care of the injured is everyone’s responsibility; you do not need to feel embarrassed.”
“You also know I am injured. If both of you leave and another ghost bursts into this room, will I not be a goner?”
He Yuput replied gloomily, “Did you take a fancy to Xie Jingyan, and are you waiting for me to die so you two can elope?”
Shen Weiran: “?”
F*ck, what is this nonsense running through this love-brained NPC’s head all day?
“Fine! One white moonlight left, and now a cinnabar mole has arrived, is that it?”
