- Chapter 5 - The Dilapidated Hotel
◎ I Love You, I Am Pretending ◎
The blood on the photograph looked fresh, as if it had only just been smeared on. Xie Jingyan wiped it a few times with a damp tissue, and it largely returned to its original state.
He Yuput lay on his side on the bed and happened to see the back of the photo. “Brother Xie, wipe the back as well. There seems to be writing on it.”
Xie Jingyan complied and wiped the back, revealing childish handwriting hidden beneath the bloodstains: “I hope we never part.”
The signature below read “He Xiao’e,” accompanied by a drawing of a flower with a smiley face.
“The handwriting is quite large, and the strokes are crooked. You have to hold it at a distance to barely make out what is written.”
Xie Jingyan speculated, “Also, the pressure is very heavy, so it was likely written by a child under five.”
He Yuput rested his head on Xie Jingyan’s lap and looked at the front of the photo. “The little girl in the picture looks to be under five. She looks quite a bit like the landlady. This should be a family portrait.”
Xie Jingyan replied, “If that is the case, and the landlady and her daughter have both turned into ghosts, then her husband probably has as well.”
He Yuput agreed, “Yes. The deformed crawler that was chasing me earlier had a face so badly ulcerated that I could not see its original appearance, but its stature was very similar to the little girl in the photo.”
The sound of the door being rammed grew louder, and the heavy objects propped against it began to vibrate. Shen Weiran struggled to hold the door, looking toward them with difficulty. “Xie Jingyan, use some healing on He Yuput. This door will not hold much longer! You two need to stay back!”
Xie Jingyan pulled a healing spray from the system and sprayed it on He Yuput, fully restoring his health bar.
The door was slammed violently by an unknown object again, causing the entire frame to cave in and deform.
A black shadow covered the translucent window. Two blurred, red pupils were attempting to peek into the room, emitting the eerie, ear-piercing laughter of a young child. “Hehehe, be good and wait for me inside.”
Xie Jingyan did not even bat an eye. He picked up his handgun with one hand and aimed it at the door. “Shen Weiran, retreat!”
Shen Weiran, still propping his body against the door, was just about to leave when he caught a glimpse of a ghostly shadow falling behind He Yuput. It was hunched over, creeping along the wall, and was about to press a hand covered in livid spots onto He Yuput’s shoulder.
Shen Weiran’s chest heaved violently, and he lost the ability to speak. Only when the ghost was about to touch the other man did his voice finally erupt. “He Yuput, run! Someone’s husband wants to touch you!”
He Yuput blinked in bewilderment. “??”
He turned his head and came face to face with turbid, hollow, all-white eyes. The ghost was pulling at its lips, smiling stiffly at him.
In an instant, an oppressive, squeezing pain exploded in his chest. He Yuput clutched his heart, his ears filled with a ringing sensation, as if he had returned to the state of his physical body in reality suffering a heart attack.
His throat felt salty with blood, and he thought with disbelief: Does this NPC body not have a heart condition?
【Newbie Hint: Your physical body in reality will affect your game experience, but it will not become a direct cause of death for you in the game.】
But it could become an indirect cause of death.
Time stretched. Xie Jingyan moved so quickly that he was nothing but a blur. He caught He Yuput’s collapsing body, threw his dagger at the ghost’s neck, and simultaneously kicked the table to use the force to put distance between them.
The sound of the dagger slicing through the air was sharp. It passed right through the ghost’s body and embedded itself in the wall, failing to cause it any damage at all.
Water vapor began to appear in the room. The cold, damp malice grew increasingly intense. The ghost let out a cackling laugh, and its pale, cyan arm reached toward them without warning.
【Does the player wish to use Confessor’s Prophecy?】
Shen Weiran did not have time to think. He immediately chose to use it.
His pupils contracted. A whisper from the gods reached his ears, and ephemeral light and shadows flashed before his eyes. An indescribable intuition surfaced in his mind. “Xie Jingyan, pick up the water cup on the right and splash it on him!”
