A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 30
After loading the luggage into the car, Yu Ning sat in the back seat and suddenly realized it had been a long time since she last saw that novel.
“Mom, have you seen the blue leather-bound book on my bookshelf?”
“Blue leather-bound book? I haven’t seen it.” Her mother, sitting in the passenger seat, thought for a moment before asking, “Is it some reference book? Is it important?”
Afraid her mother would press further, Yu Ning quickly shook her head. “No, it’s not important. I just suddenly remembered it.”
“Oh, well, when we get there, you can look for it properly. Maybe I forgot where I put it.”
Seeing that Yu Ning said it wasn’t important, her mother didn’t ask any more questions.
Not long after, the three of them arrived at their destination.
As soon as Su Yien got home, before she could even eat, she received a call from her mother.
“Mom.”
“So you still remember I’m your mom? How many calls have I made? Why didn’t you answer?”
The volume was so loud it startled Su Yien, making her pull the phone away from her ear. She rubbed her ear and replied with a hint of helplessness, “Mom, I was studying.”
“Really?” Although Su Yien’s words surprised Su Yuan, she knew her daughter was honest.
Just like before, whenever she asked where she was or what she was doing.
Su Yien would always truthfully answer where she was and who she was hanging out with.
“Really ” Su Yien sighed, switched the phone to speaker mode, and placed it aside. She then took two tomatoes from the fridge to start cooking.
“Oh, that’s good.” After saying this, Su Yuan added, “By the way, about what I mentioned last time.”
Before she could finish, Su Yien interrupted impatiently, “Mom, do you really have to make your eighteen-year-old daughter go on a blind date?”
“This isn’t a blind date,” Su Yuan chuckled. “It’s just letting you two meet. I’ve seen this girl, and she’s quite nice. Besides, she might not even be interested in you.”
“Mom, this might hurt your feelings, but I have to say I don’t trust your judgment. As for her possibly not being interested in me, I can only thank her for sparing me.”
Su Yien replied while chopping vegetables.
After a moment of silence from Su Yuan, Su Yien asked, “Mom?”
“You don’t have a mom anymore.” Su Yuan’s voice turned icy. “You hurt her too much.”
Drama queen.
“Alright, Mom, I need to make dinner. We can talk about this another time.”
Su Yien didn’t want to discuss the blind date topic any further and tried to hang up.
“Wait, wait, wait.”
Just as the call was about to end, Su Yien heard her mother say, “I lent the house behind your school to someone. She’s moving in tonight. Could you go help her if you have time?”
Su Yien: “…”
“No time.”
Did she even ask for my permission before lending the house out?
Su Yuan tried to say more, but Su Yien hung up without hesitation.
It was just a house, after all. She hardly stayed there a few times a year. It was just a pity about the room she had recently been trying to decorate, thinking she could take Yu Ning there for her birthday.
The house’s decor leaned toward cool tones, with gray and white as the main colors, giving it a cold and unwelcoming feel.
Yu Ning didn’t like this kind of decoration.
She had assumed the entire house would follow this color scheme, but to her surprise, when she pushed open the bedroom door, she found it starkly different from the living room.
In stark contrast to the cool tones of the living room, the bedroom was decorated in a candy-colored palette, looking incredibly cute and warm.
“Quite a contrast,” Yu Ning murmured to herself. Even the bedsheets were candy-colored, and a candy-themed wind chime hung by the window.
Was it intentional to have two completely different styles for the living room and the bedroom?
Curious, Yu Ning pushed open the door to the second bedroom, only to find its decor identical to the living room’s both in cool tones.
The second bedroom seemed more like a converted study, filled with books from floor to ceiling. An open book lay on the desk, with a pen placed beside it.
Just one glance was enough to tell that someone had been living there not long ago.
She only peeked in from the doorway, not stepping inside.
After settling the luggage, Yu Ning’s mother and mom hurried back to the company.
Yu Ning rested for a while, then sat in the living room scrolling through a forum. She noticed that the post about them was still being updated, and in just a few hours, the replies had nearly reached ten thousand.
Was it really that explosive?
Clicking into the post, she realized it was because Jiang Shuangshuang had suddenly left a comment:
【I’ll work hard to live up to Yanqing’s trust.】
Work hard to live up to what?
Such a simple sentence successfully made those not present think that Lin Yanqing had actively chosen to team up with her.
Some of Lin Yanqing’s fans had already replied to Jiang Shuangshuang’s comment, criticizing her for several floors.
Everyone was watching the drama unfold. Just when it seemed Jiang Shuangshuang wouldn’t respond, she replied to one of her critics:
【I’m just like you I only hope Yanqing can win.】
The words sounded quite sincere.
Yu Ning found it somewhat boring. Thinking that Su Yien, who had been studying all afternoon, probably didn’t know about this post, she casually shared it with her.
In less than two seconds, Yu Ning received a reply from Su Yien, though it was just a question mark.
【You? What?】
Su Yien: 【How did you know I was just about to message you?】
Yu Ning: 【I didn’t know. I just thought you should know about this post. Rounding up, nearly ten thousand people are watching our drama.】
Yu Ning was exaggerating a bit. Sunshine Girls’ School didn’t even have ten thousand students in total. The replies numbered over eight thousand, but the actual number of people replying might only be a few hundred or a couple thousand at most.
The exaggeration was just to make Su Yien feel a sense of urgency.
【You’re right, so we should practice tennis together more often.】
【How about at noon? Practice for half an hour, then grab lunch together?】
【We should also arrive at school an hour early in the morning to get in some extra practice.】
【What do you think?】
What did she think? She didn’t think much of it.
Yu Ning had originally just wanted to remind Su Yien to study hard and make sure to outscore Lin Yanqing in the next joint exam.
But she hadn’t expected Su Yien to bring up tennis practice first.
Last time they played tennis together, Yu Ning noticed that Su Yien hit the ball too lightly, as if she was afraid of hitting her opponent.
【No denial means agreement. Then it’s settled tomorrow at six at school.】
Six o’clock?
Even though her new place was only a few minutes away from school, arriving at six meant waking up before five-thirty.
Yu Ning tried to refuse: 【Six is too early. The school gate won’t even be open yet.】
Su Yien: 【The signal here is bad. Can’t receive messages. See you tomorrow at six.】
Yu Ning:
Ridiculous.
Even though she complained, Yu Ning still woke up early the next morning for the team, for her reputation, and to avoid becoming a laughingstock.
While mentally coaxing herself like this, she slowly crawled out of bed.
Proud Sun Girls’ School had no shortage of diligent students. To accommodate those who wished to arrive early for study, the school gates opened promptly at six every morning.
Yu Ning packed her schoolbag and stepped out of her room. Standing in front of the elevator, she still felt a bit drowsy. After pressing the button, she half-closed her eyes and waited.
When Lin Yule left her apartment, she spotted Yu Ning standing by the elevator, looking weary. A moment later, she heard a series of notification sounds.
She watched as Yu Ning frowned, pulled her phone from her pocket, swiped a couple of times, and then looked annoyed, seemingly with no intention of replying.
The notifications kept chiming incessantly. Lin Yule heard her sigh before picking up the phone again, catching her tired and impatient voice:
“I’m not up, not up, not up! Stop nagging, stop nagging! One more message and you’re blocked.”
She still seemed to have some lingering morning grumpiness.
Just as Yu Ning finished speaking, the elevator arrived at her floor.
Stepping inside, she was surprised to find someone else up almost as early as she was.
But before she could take a closer look, she received a voice message from Su Yien.
“I know you’re up. I’m waiting for you at the school gate. I’ll treat you to breakfast.”
Breakfast?
Yu Ning snorted softly to herself. Fine, for the sake of breakfast, she wouldn’t block her.
After listening to the message, Yu Ning looked up and accidentally met someone’s gaze.
Wondering why this person was staring at her, she saw them offer a polite smile before stepping out of the elevator.
Had her playing the voice message out loud disturbed them?
Well, the elevator was a public space after all. She’d have to be more careful next time.
She arrived at the school gate exactly at six o’clock. Su Yien was already sitting inside a breakfast shop, waiting for her.
【Turn right, breakfast shop.】
After reading the message, Yu Ning instinctively glanced to the right and indeed spotted Su Yien waving at her from inside the shop.
From now on, she, Yu Ning, could also say she had seen the six o’clock sun.
“What do you want to eat?”
Yu Ning scanned the menu and ordered a basket of steamed buns and a cup of soy milk.
The breakfast shop was bustling with business. Customers streamed in steadily mostly students who had risen early to study, along with a few teachers.
Yu Ning hadn’t expected that on this rare occasion of waking up early, she would run into her homeroom teacher.
It was the first time the teacher had seen Yu Ning arrive so early. Assuming she had finally developed a sense of urgency, and considering her significant improvement in the recent weekly exam, the teacher praised and encouraged her warmly.
Hearing her kind words, Yu Ning felt too embarrassed to admit she had only gotten up early to practice tennis.
Yu Ning heard a soft chuckle from Su Yien sitting across from her and gritted her teeth, giving her a light kick under the table.
She could easily guess Su Yien was laughing at her for lying so seriously.
What else could she do? Her teacher was so excited was she supposed to pour cold water on her enthusiasm first thing in the morning?
Su Yien had her back to Wu Juan, so she didn’t know who was standing in front of Yu Ning.
After glancing over a couple of times, finding the figure vaguely familiar, the teacher left.
“If the homeroom teacher saw it was you sitting with me, she wouldn’t think I came here to study.”
“Then what would she think you came to school so early for? A date?”
Yu Ning: “…”
Originally, Yu Ning had just wanted to shut her up, but she hadn’t expected Su Yien to say something like that.
Her revenge unfulfilled, Yu Ning chose to stay silent.
After finishing breakfast, Yu Ning felt a bit too full and suddenly realized something. She asked Su Yien, “Is it bad to exercise right after eating?”
“Of course, exercising on a full stomach can lead to gastrointestinal issues, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, even intestinal or stomach rupture.”
Yu Ning: “Really?”
“Really,” Su Yien’s voice sounded lazy. “Didn’t you notice I barely ate anything?”
Yu Ning: “…”
Thinking back carefully, she realized Su Yien had only taken a few sips of porridge. Yu Ning had wondered at the time how such a small amount could possibly fill her up.
Turns out she had miscalculated.
Seeing Yu Ning lost in thought, Su Yien couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re so easy to fool.”
Yu Ning: “…”
“It’s fine. We can study in the morning and practice in the evening instead.”
Yu Ning: “…”
So she really woke up this early just to study.
