A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 29
Yu Ning’s mind was filled with giant question marks, and she blurted out, “What does it have to do with you?”
Lin Yanqing didn’t step aside but repeated, “Where are you going?”
The tone and attitude were no different from before.
“Tsk tsk, if I remember correctly, didn’t you already break off your engagement with this person?” Su Yien leaned against the door, speaking lazily.
“That’s right,” Yu Ning chimed in, then added after a moment’s thought, “Don’t you think people like that are disgusting, always clinging to others?”
“Absolutely,” Su Yien chuckled softly, meeting Lin Yanqing’s scrutinizing gaze head-on.
The two of them played off each other, leaving the remaining classmates in the classroom stunned.
“Dare to compete with me?” Lin Yanqing suddenly spoke up.
Su Yien raised an eyebrow and replied, “Compete in what?”
“Basketball and the joint exam, and one more for Yu Ning to choose.”
Lin Yanqing had chosen areas where each of them excelled, making it seem to outsiders like the score was currently tied at one-to-one.
Suddenly mentioned, Yu Ning: “…”
One dares to propose, the other dares to accept. How childish. Besides, what does it have to do with her?
There were fewer than ten classmates left in the classroom, all now in spectator mode.
Although Yu Ning didn’t understand why Su Yien had agreed to Lin Yanqing’s challenge and found their behavior childish, when Lin Yanqing tossed the question to her and everyone’s eyes turned to Yu Ning, she still asked Su Yien without hesitation, “What else are you good at?”
Lin Yanqing’s expression suddenly turned cold.
Yu Ning’s immediate question made it clear to everyone present that she was siding with Su Yien.
“Still competing?”
Su Yien lifted her chin with a light laugh and asked Lin Yanqing.
Why they were competing, Yu Ning didn’t know, but Su Yien and Lin Yanqing understood perfectly.
“Yes,” Lin Yanqing coldly spat out the word.
Su Yien: “Then let’s compete in tennis doubles, how about that?”
Before Lin Yanqing could nod, she heard Su Yien add, “Yu Ning and I, you and that person, how about that?”
As she spoke, Su Yien glanced at Jiang Shuangshuang, who had been watching them from the corner.
Lin Yanqing followed Su Yien’s gaze and saw Jiang Shuangshuang hiding in the corner.
“I disagree. I want to be on her team.”
The “her” Lin Yanqing referred to was Yu Ning.
Yu Ning frowned, about to refuse, when she heard Su Yien sneer, “You’ve done everything you should and shouldn’t have. Why are you suddenly shy about playing tennis together?”
Su Yien was hinting at her and Jiang Shuangshuang.
Lin Yanqing: “…”
“She doesn’t know how,” Lin Yanqing said casually.
Su Yien was about to suggest finding someone else when she heard Jiang Shuangshuang’s voice: “I do.”
Jiang Shuangshuang walked over to Lin Yanqing’s side, smiling at her. “I’m quite good.”
With everyone else agreeing, it would be unreasonable for Lin Yanqing to refuse.
“If I win,” Lin Yanqing paused, “stay away from Yu Ning.”
Su Yien seemed to have anticipated this, looking at her with a half-smile. “I’m afraid that won’t work. Yu Ning can’t do without me.”
Hearing this, Yu Ning wanted to step on her foot, but remembering they were in this together, she suppressed the urge. Then she heard Su Yien add, “Of course, I can’t do without Yu Ning either.”
“…”
That sounded far too ambiguous.
Yu Ning gritted her teeth, silently vowing to assign her two extra test papers later.
Lin Yanqing had never seen such an expression on Yu Ning’s face so vivid and spirited. In the past, whenever Yu Ning spoke to her, it was always with cautious flattery, which had gradually made Lin Yanqing grow weary of her during that period.
Perhaps, deep down, she felt that Yu Ning shouldn’t be like that.
“Are you afraid of losing?”
Su Yien knew full well that Lin Yanqing was deliberately provoking her, but she didn’t take the bait. Instead, she replied lightly, “I just don’t want to use her as a bet.”
Yu Ning froze for a second. The expression on Su Yien’s face shifted so quickly that she couldn’t quite grasp it. Then she heard Su Yien continue, “If you win, I’ll steer clear of you from now on. But if I win ”
Lin Yanqing assumed Su Yien would say something similar to her own challenge, but instead, Su Yien said, “If I win, you’ll steer clear of Yu Ning whenever you see her. How about that?”
“I second that!” Yu Ning eagerly raised her hand, pleasantly surprised that Su Yien was so chivalrous and knew exactly what she wanted.
Lin Yanqing had initially intended to refuse, but she hadn’t expected Yu Ning to react so joyfully to Su Yien’s words.
“You’re not afraid of losing, are you?”
Su Yien threw the exact same words back at her.
“Fine.” Lin Yanqing withdrew her gaze from Yu Ning and answered indifferently.
With the challenge settled, Yu Ning glanced at the time half an hour had already passed since school ended.
“Can you move aside now?”
Hearing Yu Ning’s words, Lin Yanqing took two steps to the side.
Yu Ning pouted. She must have forgotten to check her almanac today, why else would she have ended up talking so much with Lin Yanqing?
“Let’s go to the ice cream shop.”
There was an ice cream shop near the school entrance that Yu Ning often visited after class.
But as soon as Yu Ning said this, Su Yien immediately refused, “Not today. You had ice cream yesterday. How about some hot milk tea instead?”
“Are you treating?”
“Mm, my treat. Today, you’re my little Teacher Yu.”
Their voices gradually faded into the distance.
Yesterday they were together too?
“Yanqing, are you okay?”
By the time Su Yien left, the remaining classmates had also started to trickle out of the classroom.
Jiang Shuangshuang noticed Lin Yanqing standing motionless in place and softly asked, “Are you alright?”
Lin Yanqing snapped out of her thoughts and glanced at Jiang Shuangshuang but didn’t respond. Instead, she walked to her desk, picked up her packed bag, and headed for the classroom door.
Jiang Shuangshuang quickly shouldered her own backpack and hurried after her.
“Yanqing, wait for me!”
Lin Yanqing paused mid-step, suddenly reminded of that day after school when Yu Ning had taken her time packing up. Su Yien had called Yu Ning outside, and when Yu Ning realized Lin Yanqing was leaving, she had chased after her, asking, “Why didn’t you wait for me?”
What had her response been?
Why should I wait for you?
Lin Yanqing didn’t understand why she kept recalling these insignificant moments from the past now.
Thinking back, hadn’t Yu Ning been packing slowly that day? And hadn’t she, Lin Yanqing, been waiting for her too?
But then, as soon as she stepped outside, she saw Yu Ning in Su Yien’s embrace.
So why had she said those words back then?
Lin Yanqing lowered her head. Lately, some things were slipping further and further out of her control. She had always thought Yu Ning was nothing more than a stock share to her.
She needed it yet disdained it, for it was a choice forced upon her. Her family always reminded her to treat Yu Ning better, to yield to her in everything. She didn’t want to be controlled, nor did she want Yu Ning to hold any special place in her heart.
But why did she feel a hollow ache in her chest when she heard the engagement was called off?
So, where exactly had things gone wrong?
Perhaps it was the unwillingness to have something of hers taken away?
“Yanqing? Yanqing?” Jiang Shuangshuang waved a hand in front of her eyes, puzzled by why she had suddenly stopped walking and stood there in silence.
Lin Yanqing glanced at her coolly. Ever since that day in gym class, she had realized that Jiang Shuangshuang wasn’t as innocent and harmless as she had thought her previous meekness and gentleness had all been an act.
“Stay away from me from now on.”
That was Lin Yanqing’s only warning to Jiang Shuangshuang.
“I know you’ve forgotten, but back then you said you’d remember to come find me, and you’d agree to all my requests.”
Lin Yanqing paused slightly. She had indeed said those words.
Strangely enough, Lin Yanqing had always remembered this promise, recalling every detail of that day with clarity.
Yet she couldn’t remember the little girl’s face.
She had asked a doctor, who said it might be due to oxygen deprivation in the water causing partial memory loss.
But that clearly wasn’t the case she remembered every detail, yet the face of the girl who saved her remained elusive.
Lin Yanqing didn’t respond. She remembered her own words, but she wouldn’t accept being pressured by others.
“I don’t mean to force you,” Jiang Shuangshuang said with a bitter smile. “I just like you.”
Lin Yanqing remained unmoved by her confession. Many people had confessed to her, and she had heard countless versions of such declarations.
“I know you’re unwilling to let Yu Ning be taken by someone you once looked down on as an enemy, so you want to win her back.”
Was it really just unwillingness?
Lin Yanqing had always acted on her own whims, unable to understand why the broken engagement weighed so heavily on her mind. She didn’t want to see Yu Ning indifferent to her, so she kept seeking her out to talk.
As for Su Yien, who always targeted her, Lin Yanqing had never paid her much mind. When had she started caring? It seemed to be from that encounter between Su Yien and Yu Ning on the playground.
So it was unwillingness after all.
“You’re so outstanding Yu Ning will surely regret it,” Jiang Shuangshuang said softly, sensing that Lin Yanqing believed her words. “When the time comes, you can not only put Su Yien in her place but also get what you want.”
“And I’m not your enemy. I’ll help you.”
After a long pause, Lin Yanqing looked her up and down and finally said, “Practice your tennis more.”
With that, Lin Yanqing walked away.
Seeing this, Jiang Shuangshuang understood that Lin Yanqing had accepted her proposal. She hurried to catch up, walking beside her and chatting about some interesting things she had heard recently.
This demeanor was completely different from the personality she had previously shown Lin Yanqing.
Just as they stepped out of the school gate, Lin Yanqing paused, her gaze fixed on the street across the way. Jiang Shuangshuang followed her line of sight.
Across the street, inside the milk tea shop, Yu Ning and Su Yien sat side by side facing the street. Su Yien was bent over her homework, while Yu Ning was focused on sipping her milk tea, occasionally glancing at Su Yien’s workbook. It seemed Su Yien had made a mistake Yu Ning nudged her with an elbow, pointed at the workbook, and said something with a laugh. Su Yien looked up and replied, and the two of them began bickering playfully.
The scene was harmonious and warm.
So, Yu Ning was dazzling too.
Lin Yanqing watched Yu Ning and Su Yien in the milk tea shop, while Jiang Shuangshuang stood quietly beside her, observing Lin Yanqing.
So, a life-saving favor wasn’t that important after all.
So, it had started this early.
Jiang Shuangshuang let out a soft sigh, then put on her cheerful expression again. “What are you looking at?” she asked.
Lin Yanqing didn’t answer but averted her gaze.
The two being watched, however, remained completely unaffected.
Less than half an hour into the tutoring session, Yu Ning had already lost her patience and was simply drinking her milk tea in earnest. She hadn’t expected Su Yien to be so unclear about many formulas.
Yu Ning thought it over carefully: it was indeed December, and there were still six months until the college entrance exam.
“Look at this problem,” Su Yien said, placing the question she had solved in front of Yu Ning, waiting for her guidance.
“I suspect you’re trying to annoy me to death so you can inherit my milk tea.”
Despite her words, Yu Ning carefully examined the problem it was the type of notoriously difficult math question that appeared every year in the college entrance exam.
Yu Ning could occasionally solve it, but since it took too much time, she often chose to skip it when pressed for time.
After all, her strong subjects weren’t math but English and Chinese.
“Your answer is correct,” Yu Ning said after checking the reference answer and comparing it to Su Yien’s solution. She noticed Su Yien’s method was much more concise.
“Impressive, Su Yien.”
“Right?” Su Yien grinned proudly.
“In that case, why do you even need my help?” Yu Ning stood up, ready to leave.
“Hey, Yu Ning ” Su Yien grabbed her arm. “I checked the answer beforehand. I was just teasing you I actually have no idea how to solve it.”
Yu Ning turned to look at her and, seeing she didn’t seem to be lying, sat back down.
She assigned Su Yien a few more problems and started browsing a forum on her own.
As soon as she entered the forum, Yu Ning saw a hot post with her name in the title.
【Shocking! Blazing Sun Girls’ School Witnesses Two Alphas Fighting Over One Alpha? Su Yien and Lin Yanqing Engage in a Century-Old Feud Over Yu Ning—Click for Details!】
Yu Ning: ? What kind of wording is this?
She clicked into the post. It turned out the thread was about the challenge they had agreed to half an hour ago.
The original poster had detailed the events, embellishing the dialogue between Lin Yanqing and Su Yien to heighten the conflict between them.
1st comment: 【I was there, and I can confirm every word the OP said is true.】
True? What part of that was true?
When did Su Yien ever point at Lin Yanqing and roar, “Don’t you dare come near her”?
And when did Lin Yanqing nearly come to blows with Su Yien over her?
More importantly, weren’t the two of them already enemies? How did it turn into fighting over her?
This was absurd.
Yu Ning scrolled through the comments one by one. Some were just there for the drama, while others took sides. The further she read, the more outrageous the claims became.
181st comment: 【Su Yien said if she loses, she’ll eat sh*t.】
182nd comment: 【No way, it was Lin Yanqing who said if she loses, she’ll eat sh*t while doing a handstand.】
Yu Ning: “…”
It was clear that the supporters of Su Yien and Lin Yanqing at school were arguing again.
Argue all you want, fight all you want it’s not like she’s the one eating the consequences.
Just as Yu Ning was thinking this, she spotted her own name on the two-hundredth floor of the forum.
Yu Ning: “…”
And right at that moment, Su Yien turned her head and asked, “Want a piece of chocolate cake?”
Yu Ning refused without a second thought. “No thanks, I’m full.”
What a bunch of vulgar forum users.
Another half hour passed, and the sky was beginning to darken.
“Let’s head home.”
After saying this to Su Yien, Yu Ning packed up her books and stationery from the table and bid farewell to the bubble tea shop owner.
Once outside the shop, Yu Ning remembered she still didn’t know which direction Su Yien lived in.
“Where do you live?”
“Over there.” Su Yien pointed in the opposite direction of Yu Ning’s home.
“That far? Then why were you wandering around this way?”
The direction Yu Ning referred to was the one leading to her own home.
“Just killing time.” Su Yien smiled and asked, “Are you heading straight home now?”
“Yeah,” Yu Ning thought for a moment. She seemed to have finished her exercise books, so she added, “I might stop by to buy a couple of exercise books on the way.”
There was a bookstore along the way home that Yu Ning often visited.
“Perfect, I need to buy some too. Let’s go together.”
Yu Ning wasn’t surprised to hear Su Yien also wanted to buy books, but she thought of the bookstore she had visited with Sun Yiyi before and wanted to check it out again.
“Then come with me.”
Instead of heading toward home, Yu Ning went in another direction.
“That bookstore is pretty good.” Yu Ning pointed to the bookstore across the street.
In the evening, the sky had grown dim, and the small colored lights hanging outside the bookstore were all lit up.
From a distance, it looked quite cozy.
Su Yien followed Yu Ning into the bookstore.
“Welcome.”
The person greeting them was the same little girl Yu Ning had seen before.
“Little sister, are you here alone?” Yu Ning asked.
The little girl nodded. “Sister, what kind of books do you need?”
“Exercise books and test papers for the senior year of high school.” At the end, Yu Ning added, “And for the first and second years too. She needs them.”
The little girl looked behind Yu Ning, paused for a moment, then pointed and said in a clear voice, “Sister, they’re on the third shelf on the far left.”
Yu Ning found the books exactly where she indicated.
Su Yien flipped through a few exercise books beside her before tossing them back to their original spots.
“You should look at more first and second-year questions to solidify your foundation.”
“Oh, okay.” Su Yien picked up the exercise books she had just discarded and placed them aside.
Whatever Yu Ning handed her, she set aside without even glancing at it.
Noticing her behavior, Yu Ning asked curiously, “Aren’t you going to choose for yourself?”
“I’ll listen to you.”
How obedient.
Yu Ning picked out a few more books for her.
After a while, Yu Ning remembered something and slowed her selection. “Can you see that little girl?”
Su Yien didn’t understand why she would ask such a question and nodded. “At the cash register.”
Yu Ning breathed a sigh of relief. So Sun Yiyi really had been joking with her.
Just because she had gotten a storybook here, she suspected the bookstore was abnormal. Yu Ning felt she might have been overthinking things.
Since Su Yien had bought more books, she offered to pay first and have Yu Ning reimburse her later, to which Yu Ning agreed.
Unexpectedly, when Yu Ning tried to transfer the money afterward, Su Yien refused to accept it.
Does Su Yien have some kind of compulsion? Like insisting on paying whenever she goes shopping with others?
By the time Yu Ning returned home, her mother and mom had already packed most of her belongings.
It seemed they were waiting for her to come back so they could move directly.
Since Yu Ning hadn’t received any messages along the way, she had assumed her mother and mom were still at work.
Yu Ning didn’t have many essential items, and since this was a house her family had purchased, she only needed to move her necessities.
The new place was in the neighborhood behind the school, on the 17th floor of the first building.
“Is anyone living there now?”
“No.”
“Oh, by the way, Mom, I forgot to ask is your friend’s daughter an Alpha or an Omega?”
At Yu Ning’s question, her mom froze, and after a long pause, she replied, “An Alpha.”
Yu Ning: “…”
“Why did you find a place with an Alpha?” Her mother was also confused, as she hadn’t asked about it before.
“Because in their eyes, Ningning has presented as an Alpha. My friend said that since they’re both Alphas, they could look out for each other. I refused at first, but she asked if she had upset me. The main thing is, that Alpha doesn’t even live there. Ningning, after you move in, you can change the passcode it’s fine.”
Even after the explanation, her mother was still a bit upset and lightly slapped her mom’s arm in frustration. “You’re always making decisions without thinking.”
“I had no choice it was hard to turn down such enthusiasm.”
“Don’t make excuses.”
Seeing that the two were about to start arguing, Yu Ning quickly interjected, “It’s fine, it’s fine. Mom, don’t be angry. I don’t mind I can live anywhere.”
“I’m sorry, Ningning. It’s my fault for trusting your mom too much.”
“It’s okay, Mom. I can always change the passcode, right?”
Yu Ning was worried her mother would stay angry at her mom, so she quickly spoke up.
Although her mother and mom had a great relationship, whenever they had even a small argument, her mother would ignore her mom for a long time, leaving her mom to vent and complain to Yu Ning.
Just thinking about that scenario made Yu Ning feel suffocated.
“Please don’t argue. I’ll go grab a few more pieces of clothing.”
Both her mother and mom nodded obediently. Once Yu Ning had left for her room,
“How was my acting just now?” Her mom blinked, waiting for praise.
“Not bad, though a bit exaggerated. What about me?”
“You were amazing.” Her mom gave her a thumbs-up.
“I’ve met that kid before. She’s quite good polite and good-looking, a lot like me when I was young.”
“Oh, come on. If you’re going to praise the kid, just praise her. Why bring yourself into it?”
“Old Su has asked me several times when Ningning’s engagement would be called off and whether she’d like to try getting to know her child. A few days ago, I subtly hinted that Ningning had presented as an Alpha, but she didn’t believe me. She thought I was lying and that I looked down on her.”
“The contract is still in her hands, unsigned. How could I possibly look down on her?”
Her mom’s tone sounded a bit aggrieved.
“Alright, alright. I’m not saying you did anything wrong. I’ve met Little Su too she’s a good kid. Let’s let them try spending some time together.”
Since the engagement was called off, the two of them hadn’t been idle. They wanted Yu Ning to meet more high-quality Alphas, believing that the reason she had been so infatuated with Lin Yanqing before was simply because she hadn’t encountered enough outstanding people.
After much consideration, they thought the Su family’s child was quite promising.
The two were even in neighboring classes, making it even easier for them to spend time together.
While they were busy scheming, Yu Ning, on the other hand, was worried that her mother and mom might end up in conflict over this matter.
It was already late, and the lights in the neighborhood had come on, casting a dim yellow glow. A snow-white cat lay curled up on a bench.
Yu Ning walked over to the bench, crouched down, and reached out to stroke its head. Hearing it meow softly twice, as if sensing she was about to leave, it nuzzled her hand affectionately.
The cat belonged to the neighbors and always liked to curl up on the bench to rest after dinner. Yu Ning often encountered it on her way home from school, and over time, they became familiar with each other.
Yu Ning gave the cat one last gentle stroke before standing up, only to notice Lin Yanqing standing nearby, holding her dog and staring at her.
Strangely, this time, the dog didn’t bark at her.
“Auntie Yu, are you moving?”
The packed luggage was placed by the front door, so it was no surprise that Lin Yanqing had noticed.
Perhaps Lin Yanqing knew Yu Ning wouldn’t answer her, so she directed her question to Yu Ning’s mother instead.
Although Yu Ning’s mother and mum were upset with Lin Yanqing for not treating their Ningning well, they were, after all, the elders. With the matter mostly behind them, they saw no reason to hold a grudge against a child.
“Yes, Ningning won’t be living here anymore.”
Lin Yanqing hummed in acknowledgment, then patted the dog beside her and said to Yu Ning, “It doesn’t bark randomly anymore.”
Yu Ning glanced at the dog but remained silent.
Lin Yanqing knew everything from the beginning to the end, yet she had done nothing.
But now, it no longer concerned her.
Watching Yu Ning’s family depart, Lin Yanqing stood quietly under the streetlamp, the dim yellow light stretching her shadow long across the ground.
After a long while, Lin Yanqing tugged gently on the dog’s leash, as if saying to it, “Let’s go home.”
