A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 28
“Tutor me? I heard you did pretty well this time, moved up a few spots compared to your final exam?” Su Yien didn’t think there was anything wrong with what she said.
“Who told you I…” Before Yu Ning could finish her sentence, Sun Yiyi’s face flashed through her mind, and she sighed in resignation. “Actually, it wasn’t that great.”
With the college entrance exam approaching, the first round of review was basically complete. To better assess the students’ progress, the school scheduled two days for weekly exams.
Although there were no official class rankings, some students would privately inquire and create their own lists.
Sun Yiyi was one of those busybodies. After hearing that Yu Ning had performed well in the recent weekly exam, she collected score reports from various classes and ranked them.
Then, quite happily, she informed Yu Ning that she had moved up five spots compared to her final exam.
“So, is that a refusal?”
Su Yien stopped walking and looked at Yu Ning, her expression slightly hurt.
“No, no, no,” Yu Ning swallowed the ice cream in her mouth and explained, “It’s mainly that I’ve never tutored anyone before. I don’t know how. I’m the type who just studies mechanically, you know? You’d be better off hiring a tutor.”
“Wouldn’t a tutor cost money? Since you didn’t refuse, I’ll take that as a yes.” Su Yien chuckled, quite pleased with the outcome.
Yu Ning:
So, it was because she was free labor and didn’t charge anything?
It wasn’t that Yu Ning was refusing; she was just worried she might not explain things clearly and end up misleading Su Yien.
“But why the sudden urge to study seriously?” Yu Ning was more curious about this.
“Do you remember what you said to me on the playground two months ago?”
Yu Ning thought back and recalled that she had mocked Su Yien for her poor grades, saying she couldn’t compare to Lin Yanqing.
“Exactly what you’re thinking.” Seeing Yu Ning’s expression, Su Yien knew she understood.
Yu Ning finished the last bite of her ice cream and sighed. “She has a protagonist halo, but it’s not impossible.””
At least in the story, Yu Ning had never seen Lin Yanqing fall from the top spot. But Yu Ning didn’t say it was impossible. According to the story, a year later, she would save the Lin family from bankruptcy. Now that she was awake, she wouldn’t help the Lin family anymore. Based on how things were developing, the Lin family would eventually collapse.
Many things, once foreseen, could be changed.
But in Yu Ning’s impression, Su Yien’s grades were particularly poor. She had even been publicly criticized for failing math.
Her usual demeanor also gave off the vibe of someone who didn’t take studying seriously.
Su Yien seemed to guess what Yu Ning was thinking. She pulled the recent weekly exam score report from her shoulder bag and handed it to her.
Yu Ning took the report, glanced at it, and suddenly exclaimed in surprise, “Huh, were the exam questions that easy this time? You scored over 550?”
The fact that Su Yien could even survive in Class 2 was a surprise to Yu Ning. She still remembered the principal’s tone when he publicly criticized Su Yien over the school broadcast.
“I just took it casually.”
Although her tone sounded indifferent, her expression when she handed the score report to Yu Ning told a different story.
Having a foundation was good, at least it wouldn’t be too difficult to tutor her.
“So, roughly what rank did you get?”
They were almost at the residential complex, so Yu Ning asked casually.
Su Yien took a few steps back before answering, “Just around 300-something.”
Yu Ning’s footsteps halted. The entire twelfth grade at the school had just over six hundred students.
By the time Yu Ning wanted to turn around and speak again, Su Yien waved at her: “Bye, I’ll wait for you at your class after school tomorrow.”
Yu Ning:
She dared to guess that the “over three hundred” Su Yien mentioned was closer to four hundred.
But thinking about how Su Yien had helped her so many times, she should help her in return.
Lost in thought, she unconsciously arrived at the entrance of her apartment building. Yu Ning heard a dog barking and looked up to see Lin Yanqing holding a leash, staring right at her.
Yu Ning felt it was time to bring up moving out.
To emphasize Yu Ning’s unlikability, the story deliberately included the detail that “even dogs disliked her.”
The dog Lin Yanqing was walking had been with her for eight years. Usually quite gentle, it would bark incessantly every time it saw Yu Ning. Back when Yu Ning was trying to win Lin Yanqing’s favor, she even bought dog treats to build a good relationship with the dog, only to get bitten.
Just thinking about it now made Yu Ning feel suffocated. What a foolish character.
Later, when this dog met Jiang Shuangshuang, its temper became incredibly good, wagging its tail and rubbing against her.
How boring. She, Yu Ning, was just a tool.
Yu Ning had no intention of acknowledging Lin Yanqing, but Lin Yanqing called out to her.
These days, Lin Yanqing had called her name more times than in all the previous years combined.
“Yu Ning.”
Seeing no response, Lin Yanqing called again.
“Do you want me to follow you to your home?”
Yu Ning ignored her.
“790223.” Lin Yanqing recited a string of numbers.
Hearing this, Yu Ning’s heart skipped a beat. She had been too careless, not changing the password.
She never expected Lin Yanqing to remember her apartment door code. She had only told Lin Yanqing the password once, and back then, when she mentioned it, Lin Yanqing had looked indifferent, as if she wasn’t even listening. Yu Ning assumed Lin Yanqing didn’t know the code.
Now, with Lin Yanqing following closely behind, even if she rushed back to change the password, it would be too late. She might really follow her inside.
Yu Ning took a deep breath, suppressing her anger, and turned to look at her coldly.
Lin Yanqing stopped three steps away, gazing at her. Her eyes no longer held their usual indifference but instead held an emotion that was hard to decipher.
Were the Yu family’s shares really that important? Worth her humiliating herself like this?
Yu Ning hadn’t even started her revenge plan, and Lin Yanqing was already offering her face to be slapped?
This was just too foolish.
“I apologize for my past actions.”
Yu Ning had heard Lin Yanqing apologize many times recently, but she understood that all this humility was just to soften her heart and secure the Yu family shares.
How boring. And how undesired.
“This is the necklace you always wanted to buy.” Lin Yanqing took a box from her pocket and opened it. “I actually bought it that day, but I never gave it to you.”
Bought it that day?
Yu Ning recognized it instantly. It was from a long time ago, under their families’ arrangements, when she and Lin Yanqing went shopping together. She had taken a liking to this necklace and asked Lin Yanqing to buy it for her.
Not because the necklace was particularly beautiful, but because the shopkeeper had said its meaning was “true love.”
She still remembered Lin Yanqing’s response at the time: just three words “buy it yourself.”
And now she claimed she had bought it back then but never gave it to her.
“Is it mine now?”
Seeing Yu Ning finally speak, Lin Yanqing nodded.
“Oh, then let it stay where it belongs.” With that, Yu Ning threw the necklace into the trash can.
He even prepared the necklace in advance wasn’t he deliberately waiting for her here? And bringing a dog along? What was he trying to do? If she refused, would he set the dog on her?
Thinking this, Yu Ning felt that Lin Yanqing was not only selfish but also malicious.
Lin Yanqing was momentarily stunned. By the time he regained his composure, Yu Ning had already gone upstairs. The surroundings were filled only with the sounds of children playing and the dog barking.
Lin Yanqing cast a cold glance at the dog beside him, and it immediately stopped barking, leaving only a pitiful whimper.
After a while, Lin Yanqing acted as if nothing had happened, turned the corner, and continued walking the dog.
Yu Ning jogged into the elevator and entered her room, changing the door passcode.
The current Lin Yanqing struck her as somewhat strange, both in personality and behavior.
Yu Ning categorized this abnormality as a bout of insanity.
After resting for a while, the thought of running into Lin Yanqing every time she returned home disgusted her, so she called her mother.
The call was answered almost immediately.
“Ningning? What’s wrong?”
Her mother and mom were often busy handling company matters, either in meetings or on business trips. Yu Ning, being sensible, rarely called them over trivial matters.
“Mom, I want to move. I don’t want to live here anymore.”
“Alright, how about moving to a neighborhood closer to your school?”
The current residence had originally been purchased specifically to help the two of them develop their relationship. Now that the engagement was canceled, there was no longer any need to live in the same building.
“Mm-hmm.” Yu Ning knew that her mother must have already made plans when she said this.
Shortly after hanging up, Yu Ning received a message from her mom. Perhaps her mother was too busy with work and had passed the task along.
[Ningning, a friend’s daughter has an apartment in the neighborhood behind the school. She doesn’t usually live there, only occasionally. Would you be willing to stay there?]
The neighborhood behind the school was only a five-minute walk to campus, which meant she could sleep in an extra half hour every day.
If the other person only came back occasionally, that was fine. In fact, Yu Ning had been feeling a bit lonely living alone, so having a roommate sounded quite nice.
[What’s her personality like? Is she easygoing? Will we get along?]
This was Yu Ning’s main concern.
[Don’t worry. She said she’s around your age, has a good temper, knows how to cook, and might not even come back once a month.]
Yu Ning felt reassured. Plus, the fact that she could cook sounded great.
[When can I move?]
Yu Ning was eager to move right away, not wanting to see Lin Yanqing again tomorrow.
[Tomorrow evening, after your mother and I finish work, we’ll come help you move. Is that okay?]
Yu Ning understood that her mother and mom had heavy workloads, so she replied with an agreement.
That night, as she was about to sleep, Yu Ning realized she had forgotten to ask whether the other person was an Alpha or an Omega. But then she thought that since her mom had found the place, everything must have been considered for her.
Filled with hopeful expectations for the next day, Yu Ning fell asleep and had a dreamless night.
Perhaps because she knew she would be moving that evening, Yu Ning felt much more energetic during class, even raising her hand to answer several of the teacher’s questions.
In the afternoon when school let out, before Yu Ning had even finished packing her bag, she heard the sound of someone tapping on the glass window. Without even looking up, she guessed it was Su Yien.
Yu Ning finished packing her bag and was about to leave the classroom when suddenly, a wall of flesh appeared in front of her.
Fortunately, she managed to stop in time to avoid a collision. Just as she was about to ask if the person didn’t know how to watch where they were going, she met Lin Yanqing’s accusatory gaze.
She heard Lin Yanqing ask, “Where are you going with her?”
