A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 27
Because Lin Yanqing had suddenly approached Yu Ning, various rumors were now circulating throughout the school.
Yu Ning had initially thought that Lin Yanqing would at least realize how embarrassing her behavior was upon hearing these rumors. However, Lin Yanqing remained oblivious, and despite Yu Ning ignoring her, she continued to bother Yu Ning from time to time.
While Yu Ning was in the hospital, the school had sent teachers to visit her, explaining that the incident was due to outdated stage equipment and inadequate fire safety measures, and they apologized to her.
Knowing how the story would unfold, Yu Ning understood that this was merely a coincidence arranged by the author and did not press the matter further.
Feeling indebted to her, the school reminded her homeroom teacher to take extra care of her after she returned, fulfilling any requests she might have as much as possible.
Yu Ning truly felt the “extra care” the school had mentioned.
“Yu Ning, this section is important. Make sure to memorize it,” said the usually stern and unsmiling Chinese teacher, pointing at the key points with a cheerful smile.
Every teacher who passed by her desk would kindly point out the important parts, gently reminding her to stay focused and pay attention in class.
Yu Ning, who used to occasionally daydream or play on her phone during class, now completely restrained herself.
Perhaps because of the teachers’ extra attention, Yu Ning’s grades improved rapidly. In the recent weekly exams, her total score had increased by over thirty points compared to the previous one.
Yu Ning’s grades weren’t bad to begin with she had ranked 20th in her grade in the last final exam.
“Everyone, settle down. In three weeks, there will be a joint exam with two other schools. Please start preparing,” the homeroom teacher announced.
As soon as the teacher finished speaking, groans of complaint filled the classroom.
“We already have final exams in two months. Why are they throwing a joint exam at us now?”
“Exactly! If they were going to do a joint exam, why didn’t they tell us earlier? Who has time to prepare now?”
“Whatever, it’s the school’s reputation on the line anyway.”
Yu Ning had known about the joint exam for a while. In the story, the exam was meant to bring Lin Yanqing and Jiang Shuangshuang closer. During these months, Yu Ning was supposed to be hospitalized, while Lin Yanqing spent every day with Jiang Shuangshuang, helping her with her studies after class.
Though the plot was cliché, it worked their relationship quickly grew warmer.
Yu Ning didn’t join in the complaints. Instead, she quietly took out her notebook to review the lessons from the past couple of days.
Since breaking off her engagement, Yu Ning had devoted more energy to her studies. Although whispers and gossip still surrounded her, fewer people bothered her now.
Before, whenever an Omega at school presented, they would flaunt it in front of her.
But after news spread that Yu Ning had presented as an Alpha, some of the Omegas who had once been her rivals even turned around and confessed their feelings to her.
Yu Ning:
Because of this, even though Lin Yanqing still tried to strike up conversations with her from time to time, the Omegas who had once seen her as a rival no longer viewed her as a threat. Some even came to her to ask about Lin Yanqing’s preferences.
In their eyes, Yu Ning was no longer competition.
The same logic applied to Su Yien. Although some people still gossiped about their relationship, most were just curious about how the two had become so close.
Aside from the occasional “admirers,” being an Alpha was actually quite useful.
That was what Yu Ning had thought until this afternoon.
Until she ran into a group of Alphas at the alley entrance.
“Isn’t this Yu Ning, the one who just presented as an Alpha?”
Yu Ning was standing at the crosswalk waiting for the traffic light when, unexpectedly, five Alphas approached from the side. The leader not only spoke up but also reached out, attempting to place a hand on her shoulder.
Yu Ning nimbly dodged, her eyes fixed on the lead Alpha as she searched her memory she didn’t recognize this person at all.
“So you really did differentiate into an Alpha?” Xu Xin chuckled before asking again.
Though unsure of what she meant, Yu Ning nodded anyway.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Even though you’ve become an Alpha, you’re still pretty good-looking. How about I give you a chance to be with me?”
Yu Ning frowned at the words. She knew some people didn’t care whether someone was an Alpha or Omega, but she never expected to encounter such a situation herself.
After sizing up the group in front of her and comparing them to herself, she knew she couldn’t possibly win in a fight.
The traffic light had already turned green, but Yu Ning’s path was blocked by these Alphas. The few Omegas who had been waiting alongside her at the crosswalk glanced at Yu Ning a few times but offered no help.
There wasn’t even a traffic police booth in this area.
Yu Ning: “…”
Modern people, so cold.
“Talk if you want, but keep your hands to yourself.” Seeing Xu Xin’s hand reaching for her again, Yu Ning instinctively took two steps back.
Unexpectedly, this reaction made the group laugh.
“We’re all Alphas here, what’s wrong with a little touch?”
First, she was told to be with her, and now she was saying there was nothing wrong with touching since they were both Alphas.
Talk about having a way with words.
Yu Ning only complained inwardly, while outwardly she was already thinking about how to get away from these people.
“Forget what I said earlier. Since you’ve differentiated into an Alpha, you should follow Alpha rules.”
Yu Ning frowned. Were there rules for becoming an Alpha?
Suddenly, she remembered Alphas from other classes often liked to gang up and fight. Could that be what she was referring to?
Most Alphas were far more hot-tempered than Omegas, often resorting to fists when words failed.
Having spent so long in the sheltered environment of Class One, Yu Ning had almost forgotten this nasty trait of Alphas.
Were they planning to fight her?
“Come on, let’s go over there and have a proper chat.” Xu Xin tried to push Yu Ning, but she dodged again.
“No. Way.” Yu Ning enunciated each word clearly. The “over there” they mentioned was a narrow alley with even fewer people she wasn’t that foolish.
“Looks like you’re refusing a toast only to drink a forfeit.” Xu Xin cracked her knuckles, as if preparing to take action.
Worst case, they’d just fight and then go find the police together. Though Yu Ning had weighed the odds earlier, she hadn’t actually fought them yet, who knew if these people were all brawn and no strength?
Just as tensions were rising between the two sides, Yu Ning felt someone touch her shoulder. She was about to retaliate when she heard a familiar voice:
“What kind of wine? Is it good?”
Looking up, she saw Su Yi’en’s lazy smile, and Yu Ning let her guard down completely.
“Su… Su Yi’en, stay out of this.”
Even though Su Yi’en was alone, Xu Xin’s voice clearly lacked confidence as she spoke.
“I asked, what kind of wine? Is it good?” Su Yi’en repeated.
“What’s your relationship with her?” Xu Xin asked through gritted teeth.
“What kind of relationship? Let me think.” Su Yi’en pretended to ponder for a moment before adding, “Probably the kind where I have to protect her.”
Xu Xin had never seen Yu Ning in person before, only heard about her and seen photos. Initially, she just wanted to cause trouble for her, but she hadn’t expected Yu Ning to be quite pretty.
“Did she touch you?” Yu Ning, standing nearby, suddenly heard Su Yien ask her. She shook her head.
Su Yien’s smile vanished, and she coldly warned the others, “Don’t let me see you near her again.”
Xu Xin was unwilling but had no choice. Su Yien’s connections were far more powerful than hers, and if it came to a fight, the people she’d brought wouldn’t stand a chance. In the end, she could only nod.
“Still not leaving?”
“Let’s go,” Xu Xin gritted her teeth and said to the others behind her.
Yu Ning was stunned. Was Su Yien really that intimidating? She had thought a fight might break out.
“What’s wrong? Captivated by me?” The earlier coldness seemed like an illusion as Su Yien returned to her usual carefree demeanor.
“Tch.” Yu Ning pushed her away. “But still, thanks.”
“Just ‘thanks’ again?” Su Yien seemed dissatisfied with her expression of gratitude.
Su Yien stood next to her, waiting for the traffic light.
“What else?”
“Do you really live around here?” Otherwise, why would you be heading this way?
“I was just taking a stroll, but I ended up spotting a little white rabbit being bullied.”
Yu Ning muttered under her breath, “You’re the little white rabbit.”
The two crossed the street side by side, and Yu Ning spotted an ice cream shop not far away.
“Let me treat you to ice cream.”
With that, Yu Ning headed straight for the ice cream shop.
Su Yien paused for a moment, thinking it over. It was indeed December.
Because it was winter, the temperature was already low, and aside from the staff, there was no one else in the ice cream shop.
Yu Ning glanced at the menu and instinctively said, “One strawberry ice cream ”
Then she turned to ask Su Yien what she wanted, only to see her trying hard to hold back a laugh.
“What ” Before she could finish the word, Yu Ning realized what flavor she had just ordered.
But canceling the order now would be too obvious, so she cleared her throat lightly. “You can’t stop me from having this flavor just because… right?”
Su Yien, however, retorted, “Because of what? I didn’t say anything.”
She hadn’t said anything, but her expression said it all, didn’t it?
Yu Ning ignored her and tugged at her sleeve. “Order for yourself.”
Then she found a seat and sat down.
Su Yien ordered the same as her and paid for both.
The staff member had been staring at Su Yien. When Su Yien presented the payment QR code, the staff member shook the scanner and apologized, “Sorry, ma’am, the machine seems to be broken.”
Before Su Yien could respond, the staff member added, “How about adding me on WeChat and transferring the payment?”
Su Yien could easily see through her intentions, but before she could refuse, Yu Ning chimed in:
“No problem, no problem, Auntie, I have cash.”
Auntie?!
The staff member’s hands trembled with anger. Sure, she might not be as young as them, but she was only in her twenties hardly an auntie, right?
To make matters worse, Yu Ning looked completely innocent as she pulled out her little yellow duck wallet from her backpack and handed over the change.
The staff member was furious but couldn’t say anything.
She could only vent her anger on the ice cream, deliberately giving one portion only half the usual amount.
Yu Ning, holding the ice cream: “…”
Then she glanced at the overflowing cone in Su Yien’s hand.
Yu Ning fell silent.
After leaving the ice cream shop, Su Yien noticed Yu Ning hadn’t taken a bite and curiously asked what was wrong.
Yu Ning sighed. “I’m wondering if she might have spit in my ice cream.”
Su Yien burst out laughing at that. She had thought Yu Ning was just unhappy about the small portion, never expecting her to worry about something like that.
“Did you call her ‘auntie’ on purpose earlier?”
Yu Ning, still upset, didn’t want to answer that question.
“Why did you call her ‘auntie’ earlier?”
Su Yien seemed particularly fixated on this.
Yu Ning sighed, not understanding why she was so hung up on it, but replied anyway, “I just felt like it.”
“Oh I thought it was because she wanted to add me on WeChat,” Su Yien drawled.
“You could say that too,” Yu Ning admitted honestly. “It’s obvious she’s interested in you, getting your contact info to make a move.”
“You… mind?” Su Yien asked cautiously.
Yu Ning glanced at her, puzzled by the question. “Why would I mind? Didn’t we agree I’d treat you? I had cash on me anyway.”
Su Yien let out a long “oh,” then lazily added, “I thought maybe you had some feelings for me.”
“You’re overthinking it. I’m an Alpha, okay? I’m not into that.” Saying this, Yu Ning felt a twinge of guilt.
Su Yien chuckled softly. “Right, right, you’re an Alpha.”
Yu Ning thought about it and decided her own ice cream might not be safe, but Su Yien’s definitely was. She snatched the cone from Su Yien’s hand. “If you’re not eating it, give it to me. You can have mine.”
Su Yien hadn’t planned on eating it anyway. On such a cold day, only Yu Ning would crave ice cream.
“But who was that Alpha earlier?” Yu Ning was sure she hadn’t seen her before, but then again, who would randomly pick a fight on the street?
“Xu Xin from Class Three.” Su Yien watched Yu Ning devour the ice cream, finding it both adorable and amusing. “Slow down, no one’s fighting you for it. Isn’t it too cold?”
Hearing the name Xu Xin, Yu Ning paused. She knew that name.
In the story, Xu Xin was someone who liked Jiang Shuangshuang, but she wasn’t supposed to appear yet not for another three months at least.
Three months later, not long after Yu Ning was discharged from the hospital, Xu Xin would come looking for trouble because of Jiang Shuangshuang.
Everything was messed up. Even though she knew the plot, things often didn’t connect as they should.
So, were Jiang Shuangshuang and Xu Xin in contact? If not, then Xu Xin was just causing trouble for no reason. But if they were.
What did that mean?
Yu Ning felt she was onto something crucial, but just as she was about to figure it out, Su Yien patted her shoulder and said:
“As repayment, tutor me.”
Yu Ning choked on a mouthful of ice cream she’d swallowed too quickly. Su Yien patted her back, and once Yu Ning caught her breath, she thought she must have misheard. “What did you say?”
