A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 13
Su Yien had only attended the birthday party to confirm the details of her dream. Once she had done so, she left Sun Yiyi’s home.
What she hadn’t expected was to run into someone familiar on her way back.
The venue for Sun Yiyi’s birthday party was her family’s old house, which was quite far from the city center. The chances of encountering someone she knew in this area were extremely slim.
So, when Su Yien first spotted Jiang Shuangshuang, she was puzzled about why she would be here.
She had seen Jiang Shuangshuang heading home before, and the route to her house wasn’t in this direction. Moreover, on Jiang Shuangshuang’s first day of reporting in, Su Yien happened to be in the office and overheard that Jiang Shuangshuang’s family circumstances weren’t particularly well-off. The neighborhood around Sun Yiyi’s house was a villa district, where only wealthy or influential families resided.
The birthday party was almost over, so it was unlikely that Sun Yiyi had invited her. So why was Jiang Shuangshuang here?
Curious, Su Yien decided not to leave immediately and instead stayed to observe.
Jiang Shuangshuang seemed to be on a phone call. Su Yien leaned against a tree, watching her.
Before long, Su Yien saw a familiar figure running over from the residential area it was Yu Ning, who had just been chatting with her moments ago.
“Are you okay?” Yu Ning asked, supporting Jiang Shuangshuang and examining her leg.
Jiang Shuangshuang gritted her teeth and shook her head, standing up from her seated position with a hint of embarrassment on her face. “Sorry to bother you.”
Just as Sun Yiyi was about to cut the cake, Yu Ning had received a call from Jiang Shuangshuang. She explained that a dishonest taxi driver had tricked her and dropped her off midway. She had intended to walk home but ended up twisting her ankle. Among her classmates, she only knew Yu Ning and Lin Yanqing. Remembering Yu Ning’s earlier offer of help, she had no choice but to call her.
Although Yu Ning wasn’t known for having the best temper, she was always willing to help her classmates. Besides, if Jiang Shuangshuang only knew her and Lin Yanqing, and Yu Ning didn’t step in, she would likely turn to Lin Yanqing for help. Yu Ning preferred to handle this herself. So, as soon as she got the call, she came down.
Initially, Yu Ning thought they might be far apart and wondered if she’d need to drive. To her surprise, Jiang Shuangshuang was waiting nearby, close to Sun Yiyi’s house.
“Hey, my friend hasn’t finished cutting the cake yet. How about we go back first to celebrate her birthday, and then I’ll take you home?” Yu Ning suggested.
Jiang Shuangshuang nodded. “Thank you. But will your friend be upset?”
Yu Ning shook her head. “Don’t worry.”
She had already explained the situation to Sun Yiyi before leaving. Bringing Jiang Shuangshuang back with her shouldn’t be a problem.
“Okay. Thank you,” Jiang Shuangshuang murmured, lowering her head in gratitude.
Yu Ning glanced around. If she didn’t know that Jiang Shuangshuang was a newly transferred student unaware of Sun Yiyi’s address, she might have suspected that Jiang Shuangshuang had intentionally waited for her here.
But then again, there was no real benefit to waiting for her here, and it was strange that Jiang Shuangshuang had even found this place. Yu Ning brushed off the thought.
As Yu Ning scanned the surroundings, her eyes accidentally landed on Su Yien, who was standing behind a tree.
Though it might seem like Su Yien was hiding, she was actually standing there quite openly, watching them.
Su Yien hadn’t expected Jiang Shuangshuang to be waiting for Yu Ning here, and she felt a bit speechless inside.
She even thought Yu Ning was somewhat foolish didn’t she realize there was something unusual about Jiang Shuangshuang’s relationship with her fiancée?
Usually, Yu Ning seemed quite sharp, so why was she acting so clueless about these matters?
Originally, Yu Ning had been wondering why Su Yien had left the birthday party without saying a word. Just as she was about to speak to her, she saw Su Yien walking over.
And then came her furious words: “Yu Ning, are you stupid?”
Before Yu Ning could even open her mouth, she was silenced by Su Yien’s remark.
Yu Ning was stunned. Why was this person cursing her out of nowhere?
Had she done something to provoke her?
She had originally wanted to ask why Su Yien had left without eating the cake, but given the current situation, Yu Ning instantly lost the desire to ask.
Good riddance. If she hadn’t left, Yu Ning might have even considered poisoning the cake to get rid of her.
“You come over and immediately call someone stupid are you insane?”
Yu Ning often worried about Su Yien’s mental state. She always felt that Su Yien was unpredictable one moment she seemed fine, the next she was acting out. Just a moment ago, Yu Ning had thought she was decent, even feeling a pang of sympathy when Lin Yanqing criticized her. But in such a short time, she had revealed her true nature.
Yu Ning became even more convinced that Su Yien had come to the birthday party just to annoy her.
She claimed to be attending the birthday party, yet she kept hovering around Yu Ning.
Why was she everywhere? Even when Yu Ning stepped out to meet someone, she ran into her. How strange.
And if they did run into each other, why did she have to speak so harshly?
“I think I’m insane too, but I also think you’re pretty foolish.”
Su Yien genuinely believed she was insane. If she weren’t, why would she attend a birthday party that had nothing to do with her?
It was all because of that inexplicable dream.
“You’re insane, I’m not foolish. Thank you.” Yu Ning didn’t understand why Su Yien had started by calling her stupid.
But just because Su Yien admitted to being insane didn’t mean Yu Ning had to admit to being foolish.
Su Yien glanced at Jiang Shuangshuang beside Yu Ning, hesitating to speak.
She wanted to say something but was afraid her words might hurt Yu Ning.
“So why are you here? Aren’t you going to cut the cake with your friends?”
“Why do you care?”
Yu Ning decided to ignore her and, supporting Jiang Shuangshuang, prepared to leave.
“If I tell you the truth, you won’t believe me. Do you remember what I just said to you?”
Yu Ning turned around, sighed, and looked at her. “You say it’s the truth, but why do you have to speak so mysteriously?”
Jiang Shuangshuang watched the two arguing without saying a word, seemingly confused about what was happening, her curious gaze shifting between them.
Noticing Jiang Shuangshuang’s look, Yu Ning realized they had been standing there for a while. Remembering Jiang Shuangshuang’s sprained ankle and sensing she might be in pain, Yu Ning said, “Let’s go. Let’s ignore her.”
Jiang Shuangshuang nodded and followed Yu Ning’s lead as they walked away.
Su Yien knew Yu Ning wouldn’t believe her words. In fact, no one would believe what she had to say, let alone Yu Ning, with whom she didn’t have a good relationship.
But just as she was about to leave, the image from her dream flashed in her mind the tear-filled eyes, the weak face, and the helpless gaze. Su Yien sighed, as if trying to convince herself, and muttered, “Just think of it as helping a stray cat or dog.”
Apart from this, Su Yien could think of no other reason to convince herself to help someone who always imagined her as the villain.
No sooner had the thought crossed her mind than Su Yien quickened her pace, catching up with Yu Ning and the other two.
Seeing her return, Yu Ning sneered, “Don’t tell me you came back just to mooch some cake?”
Su Yien ignored her and simply walked alongside her.
Her silence only fueled Yu Ning’s smugness. “Well, you’d better be careful. I’m definitely going to poison your slice of cake.”
Su Yien paused mid-step, silently reminding herself to endure it. Saving a life was worth more than building a seven-story pagoda.
Jiang Shuangshuang’s gaze lingered on Su Yien. From what she knew, Su Yien didn’t get along well with Lin Yanqing and Yu Ning. Yet here she was, not only attending Yu Ning’s birthday party but also sticking close to her like a bodyguard.
With Yu Ning’s support, Jiang Shuangshuang soon arrived at Sun Yiyi’s residence.
Hearing the doorbell, Sun Yiyi hurried to open the door. “Finally ” The words caught in her throat, and what came out instead was, “What are you doing here?”
The surprise and disdain in her tone were unmistakable, especially when she noticed Yu Ning awkwardly supporting Jiang Shuangshuang beside her.
Su Yien stood to the side, watching the scene unfold. She refused to believe she was the only one who thought Yu Ning was acting foolishly.
“Well, she twisted her ankle nearby and called me, so I went to help her…” Yu Ning stammered under Sun Yiyi’s piercing glare, remembering how she had assured Jiang Shuangshuang that Sun Yiyi wouldn’t mind.
Sun Yiyi was exasperated. Besides her frustration with Yu Ning, she also disliked this new classmate, finding her insincere appearing gentle and kind on the surface but often acting contrary to her words.
With Jiang Shuangshuang already at her doorstep and so many friends watching, Sun Yiyi couldn’t embarrass Yu Ning, even if she couldn’t understand what had gotten into her.
“Come in,” Sun Yiyi said reluctantly. “I was going to grant you two wishes, but now you only get one!”
Having grown up together, they had always made birthday wishes side by side while blowing out the candles.
Yu Ning knew Sun Yiyi was just bluffing and would eventually let her have both wishes anyway.
As soon as Jiang Shuangshuang entered, her striking looks drew everyone’s attention.
This only annoyed Sun Yiyi further. She hadn’t invited so many people just to let Jiang Shuangshuang steal the spotlight she had intended for Yu Ning to find someone new to crush on.
As Yu Ning had guessed, Sun Yiyi’s threat was empty, and she ended up granting her both wishes.
While Yu Ning and Sun Yiyi cut the cake, a gap opened between Jiang Shuangshuang and Lin Yanqing.
The room was dim, illuminated only by the flickering candlelight on the cake. As everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to Sun Yiyi, Jiang Shuangshuang’s gaze remained fixed on the silent Lin Yanqing.
Amid the surrounding noise, Lin Yanqing seemed utterly alone.
From the start, Lin Yanqing had noticed Jiang Shuangshuang staring at her. After a while, growing impatient with her unwavering gaze, she turned to ask how long she planned to keep looking.
But when she turned, she was met with Jiang Shuangshuang’s tear-filled eyes, brimming with heartache and concern.
Lin Yanqing was taken aback, feeling both puzzled and a bit strange inside. Why was Jiang Shuangshuang looking at her with such a pitying gaze? She had long known that Jiang Shuangshuang was beautiful, but the sudden, heart-stirring feeling she had just experienced was a first.
Before Lin Yanqing could speak, the expression on Jiang Shuangshuang’s face changed, appearing somewhat hesitant and troubled. After a long pause, she finally spoke timidly, “Could you take me home? My leg is injured, and I accidentally fell again on the way here. I…”
Before Lin Yanqing could respond, she heard Yu Ning’s voice: “Yanqing, this piece of cake is the biggest. It’s for you.”
What met her eyes was Yu Ning’s spotless, smiling face, which suddenly overlapped in her mind with Jiang Shuangshuang’s tear-filled gaze from moments ago. For a moment, Lin Yanqing was lost in thought.
Seeing that Lin Yanqing hadn’t responded, Yu Ning waved a hand in front of her face. “Yanqing?”
*Thud *
Lin Yanqing’s hand swept out, and the neatly sliced cake in Yu Ning’s hand fell to the ground.
The sound was neither too loud nor too soft, but it was just enough for everyone present to hear.
“Yanqing …”
Yu Ning’s eyes grew slightly sore. Had she done something wrong?
Lin Yanqing took half a step back, but inwardly, she breathed a sigh of relief. In that fleeting moment, she had actually thought, how nice it would be if Yu Ning’s personality were more like Jiang Shuangshuang’s…
Nice? What was nice about it?
“I don’t like cake. I’ll take her home first.”
