A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 12
Once they were out of the sisters’ sight, the two walked side by side toward the garden. Yu Ning spoke up with a hint of pride, as if expecting gratitude: “No need to thank me too much.”
Su Yien glanced at her, seemingly puzzled by her words.
Seeing that Su Yien didn’t understand, Yu Ning didn’t bother to explain further and instead reminded her, “Do you know what it means to be a lamb walking into a tiger’s den? You seem clever, but how come you’re so naive?”
Su Yien: “?”
“Where were you about to go with them just now?”
“What’s it to you? Do I have to report my whereabouts to you?”
On the surface, the words sounded sarcastic, but when Yu Ning looked at her, there wasn’t a trace of mockery on Su Yien’s face instead, she seemed genuinely curious.
Yu Ning cleared her throat, feeling slightly uncomfortable under her gaze. “Anyway, I just saved you.”
Su Yien raised an eyebrow, choosing not to argue further, and thanked her. Although Yu Ning felt she deserved the gratitude, she was still a bit surprised to hear the words “thank you” from Su Yien’s lips.
“So, can you tell me where the restroom is?”
“…”
“So, were those two just pointing you toward the restroom earlier?”
Su Yien nodded, her gaze seeming to ask, “What else did you think?”
Alright, it seemed she had meddled unnecessarily.
“It looks like you probably know what they meant by ‘the activity’?”
“Huh?” Yu Ning looked confused.
“They said they’d make sure I had a good time if I joined their activity. Do you know what kind of activity that is?”
Yu Ning blinked, feigning innocence. “I don’t know.”
“But honestly, you have no taste. Those two sisters are top-tier Omegas.”
“Oh,” Su Yien remained curious about the activity and, seeing that Yu Ning clearly knew something, pressed further, “What kind of activity were they talking about?”
“I don’t know.”
“You really don’t know?”
Yu Ning’s eyes darted around, wondering how she’d ended up standing there discussing this topic with Su Yien.
Noticing Yu Ning’s increasingly flushed face, Su Yien suddenly understood what the two had meant by “the activity.”
While Yu Ning was still lost in thought, she heard Su Yien ask, “How much longer until you present?”
Yu Ning instinctively shook her head. “I don’t know.”
After answering, she suddenly realized, why was she even responding to such a question? And what did her presentation have to do with Su Yien anyway!
Su Yien, too, was puzzled. One moment, the other girl was shy and blushing; the next, she was glaring fiercely, her tone filled with annoyance: “What’s it to you!”
Su Yien smiled. “I’m just concerned about you.”
“I don’t need it.”
No, no she couldn’t keep talking to her like this. She shouldn’t have meddled in the first place. Su Yien and Lin Yanqing were rivals, and Lin Yanqing was her fiancée. Logically, she and Su Yien should be on opposing sides. What was this conversation even about?
Coming to her senses, Yu Ning took two steps back, putting distance between herself and Su Yien.
Just then, a familiar voice called from behind.
“Yu Ning.”
It felt like ages since she’d last heard Lin Yanqing call her name. Without a second thought, Yu Ning turned around to answer.
“Yanqing! Were you looking for me?”
After calling her name, Lin Yanqing’s gaze lingered on Su Yien for two seconds before she turned and walked away.
Su Yien couldn’t believe that the Yu Ning now smiling like a blooming flower was the same person who had glared at her angrily moments earlier. If she hadn’t been with Yu Ning the entire time, she would have suspected that Yu Ning had been replaced by someone else.
Seeing Lin Yanqing leave, Yu Ning hurried to follow.
Su Yien snapped back to reality, her eyes fixed on Yu Ning’s retreating figure, and she asked, “Have you ever considered that the person you love might end up causing you to lose the most important thing in your life?”
Both Lin Yanqing and Yu Ning halted in their tracks simultaneously. Yu Ning was puzzled, unable to understand why Su Yien would ask such a question. If her intention was to drive a wedge between her and Lin Yanqing as a means of revenge, then she was mistaken.
“I haven’t thought about it, and it’s impossible,” Yu Ning replied. She had thought that after their conversations over the past couple of days and the fact that she had just reached out to help Su Yien, the latter might have tempered her behavior at least refrained from deliberately targeting Lin Yanqing in front of her. But it seemed she was wrong. Su Yien was still the same Su Yien.
Su Yien knew Yu Ning wouldn’t believe her words. In fact, even she herself could hardly believe what she was saying. But regardless, she felt she had to warn her. An intuition told her that if she didn’t help, she would regret it.
Lin Yanqing had never taken Su Yien’s provocations to heart. Even when Su Yien targeted her fiancée, she merely regarded Su Yien’s actions as childish. If Su Yien thought she could use Yu Ning to exact revenge, she was sorely mistaken. Not only would Lin Yanqing remain unaffected, but Yu Ning would never leave her because of it.
She was confident that, no matter what, Yu Ning would never break off their engagement. Her confidence stemmed from Yu Ning’s unwavering affection for her and the fact that, despite years of her own indifference, Yu Ning had never walked away.
Lin Yanqing’s gaze toward Su Yien carried a hint of disdain.
Su Yien didn’t respond to Yu Ning’s words. Instead, she walked up to Lin Yanqing, looked at her, and let out a cold laugh. “Do you know why people find you so detestable?”
Lin Yanqing remained silent, calmly watching her.
As the two stood in a tense standoff, Yu Ning grew anxious. Was Su Yien about to declare war on Lin Yanqing openly? Though everyone knew Su Yien had always targeted Lin Yanqing because of her mother, was she now bringing it out into the open?
“Because you always take what you have for granted,” Su Yien said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. Her eyes seemed to look upon Lin Yanqing as if she were a pitiful creature, and she spoke with an air of pity. “People like you usually end up with only one fate loving but never obtaining, and living with regret for the rest of their lives.”
Finally, Lin Yanqing’s expression shifted. Her gaze, no longer its usual icy calm, mirrored Su Yien’s mockery. “No need to share your personal experiences with me.”
“I heard that Aunt Zhang was treated no better than a servant in your household, isn’t that right? And as her child, you’re not close to her either. So, are you regretting it now?”
Initially, Yu Ning had been worried that Su Yien would bring up this matter to target Lin Yanqing. She never expected Lin Yanqing to be the one to mention it first.
At first, neither of them showed any signs of urgency or anger. Instead, they both seemed to be mocking each other. But after hearing Lin Yanqing’s words, Su Yien froze momentarily.
Although she had vaguely heard about these matters, no one knew the specifics. Hearing Lin Yanqing say this now made Yu Ning even more puzzled. So, did Su Yien’s Omega mother run away because she couldn’t bear it anymore.
“Is that what she said?” Su Yien murmured.
Lin Yanqing had no intention of clearing up her confusion. She merely glanced at Yu Ning before turning and walking away.
Su Yien still seemed somewhat lost, and Yu Ning suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for her.
No, no she was Lin Yanqing’s fiancée. How could she stand on the side of someone opposed to her?
“Yu Ning.”
“Huh?” Yu Ning hadn’t expected Su Yien to suddenly call her name and instinctively responded.
Su Yien looked at her as if confirming something. After a long pause, she added, “What I said earlier was serious. I didn’t mean anything else.”
As if afraid Yu Ning wouldn’t believe her, she added, “She’s not worth me using you to target her.”
Seeing how earnest Su Yien was, Yu Ning thought back to what she had said earlier. Not wanting to dwell on it further, she gave a perfunctory “Mm” and then added, “Let the past be the past. Things will definitely get better in the future. Don’t keep living in the past.”
Yu Ning felt her words were a jumbled mess, but she didn’t care whether Su Yien understood her meaning. She just blurted out everything she wanted to say.
How could Su Yien not understand her meaning? Whether she listened or not depended on her own willingness to comprehend.
Some things were impossible to explain clearly, just like her hatred for Lin Yanqing there were too many reasons, and it was impossible to articulate them all.
Seeing that Su Yien was now in the mood to discuss these topics, Yu Ning decided not to speak with her further and turned to catch up with Lin Yanqing.
Just as she turned, Yu Ning heard Su Yien’s voice: “Stay away from places with steps, and don’t trust others so easily.”
Yu Ning paused mid-step but didn’t respond or look back.
Only after the two had left did Su Yien pat her head and mutter to herself, “How foolish.”
She had actually been stunned for a few seconds because of Lin Yanqing’s words. Losing focus during a confrontation was a major mistake.
It was only then that Su Yien remembered the purpose of her attending the birthday party.
She scanned the garden and eventually fixed her gaze on a swing. Behind the swing was a patch of grass. Su Yien crouched behind the swing and gently parted the grass, revealing a conspicuous dog hole.
Su Yien was certain she had never been here before, yet she knew about this dog hole. And if she wasn’t mistaken, it was likely dug by Yu Ning and Sun Yiyi when they were young.
The hole didn’t go all the way through the wall after all, two little girls didn’t have the strength to dig that far. They had only managed to dig halfway.
They had started digging the hole for fun after watching a TV drama as children, but they hadn’t realized how difficult it would be. They gave up halfway, which was why only half a hole remained.
Sun Yiyi considered it a small achievement and never let her mother fill it in. Her mother, finding it amusing, allowed it to stay.
Su Yien stood before the wall, staring at the half-dug dog hole for a long time.
Why did she know about this?
Because she had a dream, and in the dream, a girl sat in a wheelchair, asking her with a frail smile, “If there really is a next life, can you save me?”
She knew her Yu Ning, that little shadow who always followed behind Lin Yanqing.
