A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 14
“Stop! Lin Yanqing.” Before Sun Yiyi could finish her sentence, she felt someone tugging at her sleeve and heard Yu Ning’s faint voice: “Forget it.”
“…”
Sun Yiyi’s anger instantly dissipated, unsure of what to say to Yu Ning.
She had always said Jiang Shuangshuang was fake, but Yu Ning never believed her. Now, she should finally see the truth.
The onlookers sighed some were old acquaintances of Yu Ning and Sun Yiyi, while others had been specially invited by Sun Yiyi to give Yu Ning options. Seeing Yu Ning treated this way, murmurs of discussion inevitably arose.
The scene fell silent for a moment until a voice broke the stillness: “Weren’t we supposed to go hiking?”
The speaker was Sun Yiyi’s close friend, who spoke up to ease the tension.
While Yu Ning had stepped out to greet Jiang Shuangshuang, Sun Yiyi recalled Yu Ning mentioning her desire to go hiking recently and had suggested it to the group. As the birthday girl, no one objected.
But now, given Yu Ning’s state, it seemed unlikely she would want to go.
Just as Sun Yiyi was about to suggest postponing the hike, Yu Ning spoke up: “Which mountain? Qianxue Mountain?”
Sun Yiyi had originally planned to go to Wanshan Mountain in the opposite direction, but she swallowed her words upon hearing Yu Ning and replied, “Yes, didn’t you say you wanted to go hiking?”
“Great, great.”
Yu Ning’s voice was overly cheerful, as if Lin Yanqing’s actions had caused her no harm at all.
And so, the group set off for Qianxue Mountain.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Lin Yanqing did not support Jiang Shuangshuang the way Yu Ning had. Instead, she walked silently beside her, lost in thought.
Jiang Shuangshuang glanced at the silent Lin Yanqing, sensing she might have caused trouble, bit her lower lip, and stammered an apology: “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault. I caused a conflict between you and your fiancée.”
Lin Yanqing didn’t respond, only suddenly turned to look at her.
Still silent.
“I… I’m sorry. I just didn’t want to trouble Sister Yu Ning anymore.”
Instead of replying, Lin Yanqing asked a question in return: “If you often find yourself thinking, ‘If only this person would do this or that,’ when talking to them, what does that mean?”
Jiang Shuangshuang hadn’t expected such a question. It was the first time Lin Yanqing had spoken so many words to her at once.
After a moment of silence, she thought it over and replied, “Maybe this person makes you very dissatisfied, even to the point of dislike.”
So, you want to correct their behavior?
That seemed to make sense.
Lin Yanqing pondered for a while, then nodded, agreeing with her words.
Jiang Shuangshuang turned to look at Sun Yiyi’s house, now far behind them, and murmured softly, “It’s over.”
“What?” Lin Yanqing heard her muttering and asked.
Jiang Shuangshuang offered a weak smile: “Nothing. Thank you.”
Lin Yanqing tucked her earlier murmur into her heart, still preoccupied with other thoughts.
So, it was dissatisfaction that led to such thoughts.
That had to be the reason.
On the Thousand Snow Mountain stood a temple, widely believed by all to be a place where wishes came true. Long ago, Sun Yiyi had told Yu Ning that the fortune sticks drawn at this temple were incredibly accurate. She had always wanted to visit, but Yu Ning was not one to put much faith in such things, so the two had never made the trip.
Hearing Yu Ning say she wanted to go there today, Sun Yiyi was utterly delighted.
Along the way, Yu Ning appeared to be earnestly answering Sun Yiyi’s questions, but her thoughts had already drifted far away.
No matter what was said, she would never believe Jiang Shuangshuang’s words again. She had been played like a fool, completely at her mercy.
She felt both sorrow and anger.
The sorrow was for Lin Yanqing, the anger for Jiang Shuangshuang.
Sun Yiyi was still chattering away when Yu Ning, using her low spirits as an excuse, said she wanted to stroll alone in the backyard and left.
She hadn’t expected the backyard to be so vast. As she walked, she ended up getting lost.
In her panic, Yu Ning turned onto a narrow path, sparsely populated. Almost as if guided by some unseen force, she ventured deeper and spotted a pond not far ahead, filled with blooming lotus flowers and floating duckweed on the water’s surface.
Captivated, Yu Ning fixed her gaze on the blooming lotus and walked toward it.
What she hadn’t anticipated was how slippery the path beside the pond would be. Losing her footing, she tumbled into the water.
The pond was deep.
That wasn’t the main issue. The real problem was that she couldn’t swim Yu Ning was a landlubber with a deep fear of water.
Yu Ning: “…”
This was it. When she arrived, she had checked her surroundings there was no one else on this path besides her.
As her vision blurred, Yu Ning heard a splash.
Someone had jumped into the pond and was swimming toward her.
