A Guide to Capturing the Gentle Older Sister - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Her mother, Ms. Wu, was checking in.
Yu Weiwei hurriedly hung up the phone and sent back a video of herself self-studying in the library.
w: “Mom, I’m at the library. I’ll call you once I’m out.”
Ms. Wu had likely just finished a class and sent back a few lines of text.
“Then I’ll call you when you’re back in the dorm. Study hard and stay focused.”
[Transfer: 5000]
Yu Weiwei: …
She was instantly struck by a guilty conscience.
w: “Okay, Mom.”
She placed her phone face down again and carefully pushed aside her professional textbooks. Her lesson planning notebook was spread open halfway beneath them, detailing the curriculum plan for Jiang Zhexuan.
Jiang Wu was very prompt with payments, and little Jiang Zhexuan was very serious in class, lacking any of the temper of a bear child. Yu Weiwei found teaching the classes refreshing. With money in her pocket, she was full of drive, even though she had only flipped through a small portion of her postgraduate entrance exam books.
In truth, taking on just this one tutoring job wouldn’t hinder her studies much. But for reasons she couldn’t quite explain, Yu Weiwei felt a bit unsettled.
It was as if two paths lay before her. Stepping onto one meant she was destined to miss the scenery of the other. Or perhaps there were more than just two paths, and no matter which she chose, there was no way to know if she would regret it in the future.
Yu Weiwei shook her head, quickly rescuing herself from the emo mood.
Memorize two long sentences first. Learning more never hurts, anyway.
Buzz buzz—the phone vibrated twice.
Thinking it was more reminders from her parents, Yu Weiwei lazily flipped her phone over, and her eyes brightened instantly.
Jiang Wu: “Do you like the one on the left or the right?”
The attached image showed the signature cakes of a certain bakery in Haicheng. The one on the left had a chocolate filling, while the one on the right had a strawberry-mango filling.
Yu Weiwei’s expression became jubilant, and she replied immediately.
“The right one!”
Then, she sweetly added a follow-up.
“Thank you, Sister!”
Jiang Wu: “Okay, come and eat it after you finish school.”
Yu Weiwei cupped her face in her hands, her heart already flying over there.
With fewer classes in the senior year, everyone was busy preparing for postgraduate exams, civil service exams, or job hunting. Yu Weiwei taught Jiang Zhexuan three times a week. Jiang Wu wasn’t always home, but she always prepared Yu Weiwei’s favorite tea snacks.
Jiang Wu was very busy with work. She seemed to co-own a law firm with a friend. Twice, Yu Weiwei had seen her in the living room frowning while on a phone call, but when she turned to look over, her gaze remained gentle, without a trace of irritation mixed in. She always seemed composed and capable.
So amazing—
The filter Yu Weiwei held toward Jiang Wu grew heavier by the day. She pulled her thoughts back and twirled the pen in her hand.
When will I be able to become a person like Sister Jiang Wu?
I’ll bring Sister a crepe from the school when I go to class this afternoon.
However, Jiang Wu did not end up eating Yu Weiwei’s crepe. Following an emergency call that afternoon, Jiang Wu left for a business trip to Nancheng. When Yu Weiwei went to teach the lesson, only the domestic helper and Jiang Zhexuan were home.
Yu Weiwei felt somewhat melancholy, but she soon put it out of her mind and focused on Zhexuan’s lesson.
Jiang Wu’s business trip lasted a whole week. Yu Weiwei studied alone in the dormitory, looking at the chat box on her phone. The last message had been sent by Jiang Wu right when she left for the trip. The plane trees in Nancheng should be just right at this time—they must be very beautiful.
At that moment, Mi Shushu pushed open the dormitory door in a rage. She slammed her bag onto the bed, fuming: “Let’s go, Weiwei. Accompany me to Nancheng.”
“Huh?” The word “Nancheng” instantly jolted Yu Weiwei’s thoughts.
“What’s wrong, Shushu?”
“Ciao! He told me he wouldn’t go traveling this semester so he could return to school early and study. It turns out he went back to keep a junior female student company.” Mi Shushu’s beautiful face was distorted by anger.
“What?” Yu Weiwei sat up like a carp leaping.
Mi Shushu and her boyfriend had been together since high school. During university, one was in Haicheng and the other in Nancheng. Fortunately, the cities were close. Usually, a weekend high-speed train trip was enough, so they hadn’t suffered much from a long-distance relationship. The two had also agreed to go abroad for further studies together after graduation. Their families knew each other well, and they were heading toward marriage.
The guy had even treated the 603 roommates to dinner a few times. He was tall, thin, and didn’t speak much—he seemed like a reliable person. Who would have thought!
“Okay, I’ll go with you.” Yu Weiwei understood Mi Shushu and knew that behind her forced exterior, she must be feeling very miserable. Without a second thought or excuse, she put her power bank and umbrella into her bag and stood up.
“Shushu, don’t be too sad.”
“Heh. I’m not sad,” Mi Shushu sneered. “I just can’t swallow this insult. I’m going to hit him until he forgets his own surname.”
Yu Weiwei hesitated, then stepped forward to give her a gentle hug.
Mi Shushu couldn’t help herself and leaned against her silently: “I’m so stupid.”
Yu Weiwei didn’t say anything.
Two seconds later, Mi Shushu pulled herself together. With a voice full of vigor, she took out her phone to call for backup.
“Let’s go, Weiwei. To Nancheng.”
