- Chapter 80 - A Table Full of Green Leeks
Things had already reached this point; there was no use in saying anything reproachful. At the thought of having to share a single blanket with Gu Chengfeng tonight, Shen Sisi’s cheeks burned slightly.
For the past few days, Gu Chengfeng had dark circles under his eyes, clearly showing he hadn’t rested well. She didn’t want to bother him further, but right now, there was no better way. They could only wait for the quilts to dry or buy a new one tomorrow.
“It’s okay, just be more careful next time!” Sisi comforted him. She put down her back-basket, washed her hands, and went to pick up Niuniu. Not seeing the little girl for a whole day had made her miss her terribly!
Sisi opened her arms and gave Niuniu a series of fierce kisses. Niuniu missed her mother just as much! For as long as she could remember, she had never been away from her mom for a full day. Even though Grandma had taken care of her, and Papa and Auntie Li had played with her, she still longed for her mother.
“Mama, where did you go? You came back so late…” Niuniu’s tender voice was full of grievance and reproach.
Sisi’s heart melted. “Niuniu be good, Mama was busy with work. Am I not back now?”
Niuniu looked at her with a half-understanding gaze. Work… is she going to earn work points? Mama was working so hard. She really wanted to grow up quickly and earn money for Mama to spend so Mama wouldn’t be so tired. Then Mama would have time to play with her.
Niuniu clung to her, nuzzling against her like a kitten, coaxing her mother to play.
Seeing that it was late, Sisi stroked the small face in her arms. “Sweetie, Mama has to cook now, or we’ll all have empty bellies soon.”
Niuniu huffed and pointed at Gu Chengfeng, who had just walked in. “Let Papa cook. I want Mama to play with me.”
Gu Chengfeng cooking? Sisi’s eye twitched. Better not! She still vividly remembered the meal he had cooked for Heizi and the others.
Seeing the little one being so clingy, Gu Chengfeng took the initiative to walk over. He squatted down and opened his arms to Niuniu. “Be good, Niuniu. Papa will play with you!” He reached out to take her from Sisi.
Niuniu was reluctant at first, but looking back at her Papa’s handsome face, she suddenly changed her mind. “Okay then! I want Papa to play hide-and-seek with me!”
“Fine, I’ll be ‘it’. You go hide…” Gu Chengfeng was like a big kid himself, always happy to play. Soon, bursts of laughter echoed through the house.
Sisi lifted the door curtain and walked into the kitchen. Seeing Xu Hongying washing vegetables by the sink, she called out, “Mom.”
The sound made Xu Hongying jump, and the bunch of leeks in her hand scattered across the floor. “Oh, it’s just you!” Xu Hongying knelt down to pick them up one by one.
Shen Sisi’s vision was suddenly filled with a sea of green. Why were there so many leeks? There were leeks on the stove, leeks in the sink, and even a massive bundle of them in the cupboard basket. The color was an alarming shade of green.
“Mom, what is all this?” Sisi asked, puzzled.
Xu Hongying squinted with a mysterious smile. “Never mind all that. Eating more leeks is good for the body.”
“But this is way too much, isn’t it?” To an outsider, it would look like their family ate leeks as a staple crop.
“Don’t worry about it. For the next few days, our family is eating leeks.” Xu Hongying excitedly shooed her out. “You’re tired too, go rest.”
Watching her mother-in-law’s cheerful back, Sisi felt the old lady was definitely up to something. Since she wasn’t needed in the kitchen or with the kids, she enjoyed the rare moment of peace, quietly watching the bustling house. It was exactly the life she had dreamed of—a small house, a lively family, and laughter everywhere.
“Alright, alright, stop playing! Go wash your hands and eat!” Xu Hongying shouted, carrying the dishes out.
Sisi jumped up to help, but when she saw the table, she froze. It was a verdant feast: stir-fried leeks with garlic, leeks with scrambled eggs, leek turnovers, leek and pork ball soup…
Everyone fell into silence.
“Grandma, are we eating grass today?” Niuniu blinked her big eyes like a curious kitten.
“Silly girl, what grass? This is… this is the good stuff!” Xu Hongying said, shooting a glare at Gu Chengfeng.
Her unperceptive son looked strong and sturdy, but she feared he was “strong on the outside but hollow on the inside.” To be “unable to perform” after only a few nights of marriage was embarrassing! She had specifically prepared this leek banquet. If Gu Chengfeng still “failed” tonight, she would take him to the hospital tomorrow for a check-up.
Facing this table of leeks, Sisi secretly thought that she should handle the cooking from now on—her mother-in-law’s tastes were far too strange.
Beside her, Gu Chengfeng’s expression was bizarre. He was riddled with discomfort. The moment he saw the leeks, he understood everything. Just because the bed hadn’t creaked for one night, his mother was already panicking.
At the same time, he was crying inwardly. He already struggled to restrain himself every night; with these leeks, wouldn’t it be the death of him? His Adam’s apple bobbed as he looked at the wet quilts in the yard with sudden regret. There was no choice; he’d have to take a few extra cold showers tonight!
“Come on, don’t just stand there, eat!” Xu Hongying cheerfully served them rice. She packed Gu Chengfeng’s bowl especially tight, pressing the rice down firmly. “You two must finish every bit of food on this table. Not a single leaf left,” she commanded.
As Sisi and Gu Chengfeng picked up their chopsticks, Xu Hongying suddenly pulled a bottle from under the table. “This is top-shelf Moutai I’ve been saving. I’m happy today, let’s have a few drinks to celebrate.”
She set out small cups and filled them for Gu Chengfeng and Sisi. The two looked at each other in shock. What was going on?
Xu Hongying didn’t give them a chance to refuse. She raised her cup with a laugh. “I heard Sisi bought an oil mill today. That’s wonderful news! On such a happy day, we must celebrate properly. Come, bottoms up!”
She downed her cup in one go and stared at them with wide eyes. They had no choice. The atmosphere was set; there was no room for refusal.
Gu Chengfeng helplessly raised his cup. Seeing this, Sisi knew she couldn’t escape, so she followed suit and downed hers. The white liquor burned like fire in her throat. Sisi winced in pain, but the moment she put the cup down, it was filled again.
Xu Hongying smiled slyly. “That was the first cup, wishing Sisi a grand future and a prosperous business. This second cup… is for the two of you.
