- Chapter 79 - Coveting His Kindness
Gu Chengfeng carried the two large cotton quilts with a bitter expression; his mood had hit rock bottom. Beside him, Shen Sisi was full of joy, walking with light, brisk steps. They were a study in total contrast.
“Gu Chengfeng, thank you for today. Getting Commissar Feng to support me was brilliant—you’re practically a mastermind.”
Gu Chengfeng pursed his lips, his mood still a bit unlovely. “Tell me exactly what happened,” he asked.
“It went like this…” Sisi talked as they walked, her face glowing with excitement as she recounted the story.
Gu Chengfeng’s brows tightened and relaxed in turns. He hadn’t expected the purchase of a simple oil mill to be such a rollercoaster. Fortunately, it had been a close call without actual danger. He was now incredibly glad he had asked Feng Yanzhou to intervene, otherwise, Sisi would have been bullied.
As for that Cheng Biao, Gu would personally settle that debt later.
Sisi, her eyes full of smiles, pressed her palms together. “Next, I just need to handle the transfer procedures and get some permits.”
It felt incredible. She was now someone who owned an oil mill.
“I’ll find someone to guide you through the permit process,” Gu Chengfeng said.
“Really? Thank you!” Sisi was thrilled. Having someone show her the ropes was far better than running around like a headless fly.
She looked at Gu Chengfeng gratefully. Despite his tall, imposing stature, he was surprisingly meticulous—he had even thought of this. He didn’t have to intervene, yet he looked after her and protected her with such warmth. It gave her an unreal illusion, as if they weren’t a “fake” couple at all, but a real one. Being his woman would be truly happy…
This unrealistic sense of happiness made her want to covet it, to sink into it, and made her more and more reluctant to let go. Sisi’s heart skipped a beat; it seemed she was becoming increasingly unable to leave Gu Chengfeng…
Originally, only Gu Chengfeng had been downcast, but for some reason, Sisi also went silent. They walked the rest of the way in quiet contemplation.
As soon as they got home, Sisi saw Li Wenhui waiting for her, a wood-chopping knife and a bamboo basket by her side. Sisi slapped her forehead—she had totally forgotten her appointment to teach Wenhui how to identify medicinal herbs.
“Sorry, Wenhui, I kept you waiting. I’ll take you right now…”
Without even stopping for a drink of water, Sisi grabbed her sickle and back-basket and headed for the back mountain with Li Wenhui. Gu Chengfeng wanted to tell her to rest and drink something, but the words were barely out of his mouth before she was gone.
He gloomily placed the quilts on the bed. Looking at these two “eyesores,” he felt as if a giant stone were blocking his chest. Tonight, I won’t be able to touch the fragrant, soft Sisi. I won’t be able to warm her feet. How annoying!
Extremely frustrated and searching for an excuse, he suddenly spotted the thermos standing nearby. He narrowed his eyes. Aha!
Meanwhile, Sisi was pulling Li Wenhui along as if they were being chased by a dog, rushing toward the mountain.
“Sisi, don’t rush, we’re not in a hurry,” Li Wenhui panted. She was naturally physically weak and was now breathless from the pace.
Sisi only slowed down once they were far away. “Sorry, I was just impatient.”
Sisi wasn’t actually impatient; she was simply trying to flee from a certain someone’s presence. She was afraid—afraid she would truly fall for Gu Chengfeng’s kindness and never be able to pull herself out.
“What’s wrong? Something on your mind?” Wenhui asked.
Sisi nodded, then quickly shook her head. “It’s nothing. Let’s start!”
Throwing herself into her “career,” Sisi set her worries aside. She patiently taught Li Wenhui how to distinguish between mint and wild daisies. Wenhui was a bit confused at first and kept mixing them up, but Sisi didn’t find it troublesome. After repeating it several times, Wenhui finally memorized them.
“That wasn’t easy!” Wenhui wiped her sweat and sat on a large rock to rest.
“No one is born knowing how to run. You’re just starting out; you’ll get used to it the more you harvest.” Sisi’s words gave her a huge boost of confidence.
Since it was still early, the two chatted for a while. Somehow, the topic turned to Yang Qiuxia.
“Is Yang Qiuxia still in the hospital?” Sisi asked.
Li Wenhui shook her head. “After Regiment Commander Chen sent the children away, she ran back to her hometown, saying she was going to find them. You wouldn’t believe it—the day she left, her hair was a mess and her eyes were swollen like walnuts.”
“Usually in the family compound, she’s the one bullying everyone. Her mouth has slandered so many people, but everyone was too afraid to speak up. It’s the first time I’ve seen her so miserable. She’s lost all her spirit, like she’s suffered a major illness.”
“Nowadays, everyone in the compound is thanking you. Especially your mother-in-law—she’s so fierce, a real heroine among women!”
Sisi had originally wanted to keep the peace, but constant yielding only invited others to cross the line. Now that Yang Qiuxia was a pariah in the compound, her husband wanted a divorce, and her kids were gone—she certainly had her hands full.
“Though, Commander Chen did go a bit far, sending the kids away without a word,” Wenhui added.
“There was no other way. You don’t know her; she’s the type who doesn’t care until it actually hurts. If she didn’t feel real pain, she’d never learn the meaning of regret.” Sisi felt Yang Qiuxia simply lacked a memory for her own mistakes.
“I heard Commander Chen is serious this time. He was furious and filed a divorce report immediately. It was rejected, and now people are specifically doing ‘ideological work’ with them. My guess is they won’t be able to divorce anytime soon.”
Wenhui was so animated she only lacked a bag of melon seeds to complete the gossip session. Sisi was silent for a moment. Forcing a divorce wasn’t her intention; she only hoped Yang Qiuxia would truly learn her lesson and stop provoking her.
“It seems she won’t be back for a while…” Sisi noted. Even if she did return, she’d be too busy to find trouble with her.
The two sat by the forest until the sun began to sink, then walked back arm-in-arm.
As Sisi walked into the yard, she saw Gu Chengfeng setting up a rack to air out the quilts.
“What’s wrong?” Sisi hurried over. Why was he airing out newly bought quilts? Usually, you air them in the morning. It was nearly dark—was he airing them for the moon?
Gu Chengfeng’s eyes flickered as he pointed to a large water stain on the quilt, looking like a map. “The quilt is wet.”
“Huh?” It took Sisi a moment to process. How did new quilts get wet? She reached out and touched them; they were indeed soaked, to the point where she could wring out a few drops. “How did this happen?” Sisi was speechless.
Gu Chengfeng spoke with a wounded, “innocent” expression: “When I was putting the quilts away just now, I accidentally knocked over the thermos by the bedside.”
Sisi frowned. That was far too careless! There was at least half a pot of water in that thermos; no wonder both quilts were soaked through. In this freezing weather, hanging them outside—how many years would it take for them to dry?
She let out a long sigh. What terrible luck!
