A Bad-Hearted Doctor is Unbearably Beautiful - Chapter 18
After checking the first floor thoroughly, the two of them went to the storage room on the second floor. It was a place Lu Xiao hadn’t carefully inspected last time.
At 8 PM, the sky was almost completely dark.
With only a sliver of light from the streetlights outside the window, they could barely make out the equipment in the room.
“Shouldn’t we turn on a light?” Shen Zhao asked.
“It’s more exciting in the dark,” Lu Xiao said, his tone a little off. Shen Zhao gave him a glare.
This case was full of suspicious points. Lu Xiao hadn’t reported the blood samples to the department yet, so he could only investigate privately, afraid of tipping off the culprit.
“This should be the sterilizing furnace Old Third Song used to destroy the blood samples,” Shen Zhao said, pointing to a machine on a counter filled with experimental instruments.
Lu Xiao walked closer to inspect it. The counter and the instruments were spotless, with no fingerprints left behind.
Old Third Song used to be an employee here and was very familiar with the company, so he didn’t leave any clues.
Shen Zhao scanned the walls lined with bottles and jars several times but didn’t find anything strange. The two of them then walked to the refrigerated storage area.
Besides several large refrigerators, there was also a small, horizontal ultra-low temperature freezer.
The freezer was now completely empty…
Shen Zhao moved along the wall, feeling his way. Just as he was about to call out to Lu Xiao to leave the storage room, a strong and powerful hand suddenly clamped down over his mouth from behind!
Shen Zhao’s eyes widened instantly, and his breathing became rapid. For a moment, he felt as if he had fallen back into the inescapable hell of fifteen years ago, and his body was about to lose all strength.
“Mm…” Shen Zhao elbowed the person behind him hard in the chest, only to hear a familiar grunt in his ear.
“Don’t make a sound! Someone’s coming.” Lu Xiao said in a whisper, clutching his chest, his hand now removed from Shen Zhao’s mouth.
Shen Zhao, however, couldn’t stop gasping for air, as if he had just experienced something incredibly terrifying.
Seeing the look of panic on Shen Zhao’s face, Lu Xiao immediately pulled him close, gently and continuously helping him catch his breath.
Large beads of sweat appeared on Shen Zhao’s pale face.
What’s going on? Lu Xiao was scared half to death.
In his panic, he wondered if Shen Zhao had some sort of nyctophobia or a sudden heart condition.
With no time to think, Lu Xiao saw that Shen Zhao was not in a good state and was afraid they would be exposed. He could only lift the weak-kneed Shen Zhao into his arms, and they hid in a corner of the storage room piled with cardboard boxes.
Lu Xiao listened for footsteps outside while helping Shen Zhao catch his breath.
He had vaguely caught sight of a car on the street outside the second-floor window. Its route was a little strange.
It seemed that the car’s destination was this medical center, but it circled the building a few times without stopping nearby.
The silver sedan finally disappeared from Lu Xiao’s blind spot.
But Lu Xiao’s strong sixth sense told him that this person’s destination was here!
Then, a shadow flashed by the window!
“Shen Zhao, Shen Zhao, are you okay?” Lu Xiao whispered, continuously calling his name.
Shen Zhao’s thoughts were finally pulled back.
His breathing also became steady.
In a daze, he saw Lu Xiao’s anxious eyes, and his consciousness slowly cleared.
He gently shook his head, and a faint smile appeared on his pale face, indicating that he was fine.
Lu Xiao finally relaxed, and his hand slowly withdrew.
Only then did Shen Zhao realize that Lu Xiao had been holding him all along…
Lu Xiao made a ‘hush’ gesture, and they both listened carefully for footsteps outside.
The footsteps were very light. It seemed to be only one person.
The person didn’t linger on the first or second floors but went directly up the stairs. A faint sound of a door opening could now be heard on the floor above them.
Lu Xiao crouched against the wall, quietly shifting his position. Shen Zhao followed behind.
On the third floor, there was a sudden sound of things being quickly searched. The sound of drawers sliding and cabinets opening came one after another.
Although the sounds weren’t loud, they were exceptionally clear in the quiet building.
Lu Xiao bent low, unlocked his holster, and gripped his pistol. Shen Zhao saw Lu Xiao’s broad, thick shoulders tense up. He moved quickly in the moonlight filtering through the window.
He looked like a hunting wolf.
Lu Xiao glanced at Shen Zhao, made a hand signal to flank, and the two of them crept out, one after the other.
The two figures almost simultaneously disappeared into the darkness.
Lu Xiao stayed low,贴ing to the stair railing as he moved up. Shen Zhao was signaled by Lu Xiao to wait at the bottom of the stairs.
Just as Lu Xiao stepped onto the last few stairs, an office door suddenly swung open!
The two of them almost ran into each other face-to-face.
The person, wearing a hoodie, was panicked. It was the scar-faced man!
The scar-faced man saw Lu Xiao and, without a moment of hesitation, turned right and ran toward the end of the hallway.
Lu Xiao immediately gave chase. The scar-faced man’s right shoulder hit a heavy fire door. He slipped through and raised his hand, firing a shot!
The bullet scraped the floor, making a loud noise that stopped Lu Xiao for a few seconds.
Before continuing the chase, Lu Xiao tossed his car keys down to Shen Zhao on the second floor. “Get to the car, fast!”
Shen Zhao caught them and immediately ran down the stairs toward where the car was parked on the street.
Lu Xiao stayed on the scar-faced man’s heels. When he kicked open the fire door on the first floor, the scar-faced man’s figure was already darting out the main entrance.
“Damn it!”
Lu Xiao felt like sparks were about to fly from his shoes on the asphalt.
The two of them ran wildly in the night. The scar-faced man turned into a small alley.
Lu Xiao chased him out of the alley and found he had lost sight of the target. He immediately chose a wide road to run down, but then he heard the sound of a car speeding up behind him!
As he turned, the silver Toyota sped straight toward Lu Xiao!
The silver Toyota screeched to a halt, its body scraping against Lu Xiao, sending him rolling several meters down the road.
“Get in!” Shen Zhao slammed the brakes of Lu Xiao’s modified truck.
Lu Xiao grimaced as he pushed himself up and got into the passenger seat.
The silver Toyota had already sped off into the distance. Shen Zhao gripped the steering wheel with both hands, stomped on the gas, and sped down the black asphalt road, kicking up the tail of the truck.
Lu Xiao gritted his teeth and spoke into his phone: “Be advised, the suspect is armed and dangerous. The vehicle is a silver Toyota, license plate number Shen A59664. The vehicle has now entered Jianghuai Road!”
“Received! Sending backup immediately!”
The scar-faced man’s taillights blurred into two pools of bloody light in the darkness. Shen Zhao’s eyes were fixed on them. He floored the gas pedal, relentlessly pursuing the car.
The two cars screeched on the road, and the sound of the wind howled through the windows.
The scar-faced man realized that Lu Xiao was in the passenger seat and kept his car close to the left side, not giving the black truck any opportunity to flank him from the left lane.
Lu Xiao took a deep breath and naturally placed his hand on Shen Zhao’s arm.
“Shen Zhao, listen to me. I need you to go around him on the right side. I’ll count ‘one, two, three.’ When I say ‘three,’ let go of the steering wheel! Lower your head, but keep your foot on the brake. Understand?”
