- Your Boyfriend is Great! He's Mine Now
- Chapter 15 - He Really Wants to Be Shen Xubai’s Dog
So that was it. Everything made sense now.
He realized why Gu Linyuan had suddenly appeared at Shen Xubai’s doorstep a few days ago and smashed his phone. The party that night, that had been intentional, too.
He suddenly remembered a strange, inexplicable thing the other man had said at the time: “It’s pretty good.”
What was “pretty good”? What had Wang Yao said back then? It seemed he had said that Shen Xubai had trained him like a dog.
“You were so angry and anxious at the time that you wrote a long essay and sent it to him. Even your friends didn’t want to bring it up; you were basically trained like a dog by him.”
“It’s pretty good.”
So, was Gu Linyuan’s point that being Shen Xubai’s dog was “pretty good”?
Xiao Yu felt his worldview crumbling. How could anyone think that being someone else’s dog was good? Even though he had loved Shen Xubai for seven years, the word “dog” still felt deeply humiliating to him.
It was absurd. It was so absurd that he burst out laughing on the spot. “Shen Xubai, I was wondering why you were so insistent on breaking up with me. So, you had already found a new backer behind my back.”
“Are you crazy? Don’t you know the reason we broke up?”
Xiao Yu certainly knew, but that reason had been overturned, and he now had a new conclusion.
“When did you two hook up?”
“Have you slept together?”
“Was it good?”
Shen Xubai grabbed a glass of untouched wine and splashed it directly at him, his anger reaching a boiling point. “Enough! Xiao Yu, watch your mouth.”
The bright red liquid made Xiao Yu’s twisted expression look even more terrifying as he stared daggers at Shen Xubai.
Gu Linyuan narrowed his eyes. He didn’t feel offended at all; in fact, he looked quite pleased. He watched Shen Xubai with pure admiration, only dragging his gaze away reluctantly once Shen Xubai’s back disappeared from view.
Xiao Yu slumped back into his seat, looking somewhat defeated. “Young Master Gu, I was with Shen Xubai for three years, and even I couldn’t escape his lack of sentimentality. Do you really think you have a chance?”
“Ten out of ten.”
Xiao Yu pulled a mocking smile. “Out of a hundred, I assume?”
Gu Linyuan stood up, looking down at him from his height. “Your ancestors must have burned some serious incense. The last seven years you got the better end of the deal.”
This absurd tone, as if he were the real boyfriend, left Xiao Yu completely baffled. He stared at Gu Linyuan, the mockery he intended to voice stuck in his throat.
The arrogant, noble young master, who usually looked refined, had now transformed into a gray wolf baring its sharp claws. Beneath his deep eyes lay naked, chilling killing intent.
At that moment, Xiao Yu suddenly realized it was true. Gu Linyuan really did want to be Shen Xubai’s dog.
—
The air conditioning in the car was set very low, but Shen Xubai still felt a surge of rage that was hard to quell.
He sat in the car for a few minutes to calm his mood. Just as he was about to press the gas, someone knocked on the window. The semi-transparent glass slid down, revealing the man’s aggressive, handsome face.
“Senior, I had a drink earlier, and there’s a drunk driving checkpoint ahead. Could you take me home?”
“Where’s your driver?”
“Can’t Senior be my driver today?”
Shen Xubai remained unmoved.
Gu Linyuan sighed feignedly. “I’m a bit hurt. Senior was clearly protecting me, this ‘illicit lover,’ just a moment ago.”
The vein on Shen Xubai’s temple pulsed. “I think you’ve been abroad so long you’ve forgotten your mother tongue.”
Gu Linyuan was silent for a rare moment, then said softly, “It has been too long. I’m going crazy.”
There was an indescribable pain in his voice.
Shen Xubai took another look at him and, after a moment, said, “Sorry, he’s not quite right in the head. Don’t mind him.”
“It’s fine. I’m actually quite happy.”
Shen Xubai pretended not to hear him. “What were you doing there?”
“I had an appointment, but I was stood up at the last minute.”
Shen Xubai nodded, staring straight ahead. “Thank you for the help back there. But you should know that was just for show.”
“Senior is so cold. You really burned the bridge as soon as you crossed the river.”
Shen Xubai wanted to say, That’s the kind of person I am; stay away from me. But before he could, he noticed Gu Linyuan’s expression was off, as if he were enduring something.
He hesitated for a moment before asking, “What’s wrong with you?”
“I drank without eating anything. My stomach hurts.”
“You just ate—” Shen Xubai stopped himself abruptly. He recalled that during the meal, Gu Linyuan had been busy picking out food for him and hadn’t actually touched a single bite himself.
A strange, sour feeling settled in his chest, mixed with an inexplicable restlessness. His resolve was beginning to waver.
Gu Linyuan didn’t speak again. He just held his stomach with one hand and rested the other on the window frame, watching Shen Xubai with lowered eyelids.
Shen Xubai felt uncomfortable under that direct, aggrieved gaze. Impatiently, he unlocked the door and said in a fierce tone, “Get in.”
“Thank you, Senior.”
Shen Xubai didn’t respond, keeping his eyes downcast as if in a sulk, missing the glint of cunning that flashed in Gu Linyuan’s eyes.
The car was plain, just like a factory model, with no decorations. Gu Linyuan scanned it once before turning his gaze back to Shen Xubai’s face boldly and directly tracing his slightly furrowed brow, his straight nose, his cold side profile, and finally settling on the small mole at the corner of his eye.
This relentless, unmasked gaze again.
Is everyone who studies abroad this straightforward?
Shen Xubai felt completely uneasy. Finally, at a red light, he couldn’t take it anymore. “Can you stop staring at me?”
“I can’t. Senior is good-looking.”
“There are plenty of good-looking people. With your looks, identity, and status, you can have whoever you want.”
“Is that so?” The man let out a sigh through his nose, which sounded almost mocking. “Then why don’t you want me?”
Shen Xubai wanted to say, Your mother tongue has really regressed.
He glanced over. Even in the dim light of the car, he could see the smile on the other man’s face vanish completely. His deep eyes were like dark, bottomless pools. As the light of the streetlamps fell across his face, it looked gloomy and terrifying.
Shen Xubai was slightly startled. Before he could look closer, the car behind them honked.
He released the brake, and the car moved forward.
Before Shen Xubai could process what just happened, he heard the man ask in a pitiful tone, “Senior, if you think I’m so excellent, why do you reject me?”
“There is no ‘why’.”
Just as Gu Linyuan was about to say something, his phone rang. He took the call. Shen Xubai caught a few words it seemed to be about company business. Gu Linyuan had dropped his flippant, clingy persona; his tone was sharp, and his presence was piercing.
Once he finished the call, Shen Xubai pulled the car over. He handed over a takeout box: “Pork rib porridge and mineral water. Eat this before you take your medicine.”
Gu Linyuan seemed stunned and didn’t move for a long time. It wasn’t until Shen Xubai was about to pull his hand back that he quickly took it, sounding pleasantly surprised. “Senior, did you get out of the car just to buy me porridge?”
Shen Xubai couldn’t be bothered to respond to such nonsense.
For once, he didn’t hear any of the usual smooth-talking flattery. Shen Xubai glanced over quietly to see him holding the takeout box against his chest with both hands, his head bowed, looking completely lost in his own world.
A normal person would have carried it by the side or placed it on the passenger seat. Who holds their food against their chest like that?
Shen Xubai felt a strange urge to laugh. Gu Linyuan really did look a bit like a puppy.
Once he got out of the car, Gu Linyuan returned to normal. He carried the porridge with a suggestive smile. “Senior, you really care about me.”
Shen Xubai looked at him for a second, feeling that the “puppy” look from a moment ago had actually been more pleasant.
“You treated me to a meal, so I returned the favor. We’re even.”
The smile that had been on Gu Linyuan’s face instantly froze. He said through gritted teeth, “And you were so thoughtful to bring me water. Is it because you were afraid I’d try to pull the same trick again?”
“Yes.”
“Senior really is farsighted.”
Shen Xubai smiled. “Likewise.”
