You Should’ve Said Earlier that you’re Such a Little Flirt! - Chapter 36
Xu Qingqiong was teasing her on purpose, but she was also genuinely nervous.
“Are we going right now?”
The wedding was less than two weeks away. If they delayed any longer, Aunt Chun might get even angrier. It was better to “get the execution over with early.”
Lin Konglu: “We can.”
Aunt Chun was still at the art museum and hadn’t returned home yet.
She called Aunt Chun to say she had something to discuss. After hanging up, Xu Qingqiong clenched her hands a bit tightly and confessed, “I’m suddenly feeling a little nervous.”
Lin Konglu: “Me too.”
Xu Qingqiong sized up her expression. “I don’t believe you.”
On the surface, Lin Konglu was very calm. With both hands resting on the steering wheel, it was impossible to tell.
Seeing that she didn’t believe her, Lin Konglu thought for a moment, then turned her wrist and offered it to her.
Xu Qingqiong tilted her head in confusion and tentatively placed her fingers on Lin Konglu’s wrist.
Lin Konglu guided her fingers to adjust their position.
Immediately, Xu Qingqiong felt the pulse throbbing beneath the warm skin under her fingertips.
It was very fast.
A normal adult’s pulse beats about seventy times per minute, but Lin Konglu’s pulse was racing, thumping one beat after another.
She let go, touched her own wrist, then touched Lin Konglu’s again to compare. Surprised, she asked, “How is your heart beating even faster than mine?”
She added, “But you aren’t showing it at all.”
Looking straight ahead, Lin Konglu said tonelessly, “Yes, I’m quite good at disguising it.”
The two of them were currently in a posture resembling an old Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor taking a pulse. Looking at her calm expression while feeling the starkly different, rapid thumping of her pulse, Xu Qingqiong was suddenly amused. Her tension eased slightly as she remarked casually, “The first time I met you, you had this same expression—face set and cold. Were you very nervous back then, too?”
A few seconds of silence followed. Lin Konglu paused. “Yes.”
Xu Qingqiong hadn’t expected her to actually admit it. Honestly, she felt that these emotions didn’t seem like elements that would appear in Lin Konglu’s character.
Because the first impression Lin Konglu gave her was simply too calm and too cold—like a block of ice, beautiful and exquisite yet indifferent; she couldn’t find any other words to describe her.
First impressions often dictate future perceptions. Seeing Lin Konglu for the first time created a great sense of distance, making people feel a bit intimidated.
Consequently, no matter what Lin Konglu did, Xu Qingqiong would apply that mental filter to her.
But now, rethinking that original scene—the two of them sitting across from each other in the café—they had shared the same nervousness. Their hearts had even been the same, beating fast in unison.
The ice she had imagined was actually burning in silence.
That first impression was suddenly overturned, leaving Xu Qingqiong momentarily speechless. It took a long while before she finally replied, “…Oh.”
Lin Konglu: “Hmm?”
Xu Qingqiong was a bit dazed. “Huh?”
Lin Konglu shook her head; she simply thought Xu Qingqiong had more questions to ask.
The car stopped outside the art museum, and the two of them got out.
Xu Qingqiong had felt nervous initially, but after learning that Lin Konglu was even more nervous than she was, she felt less tense.
A sense of mission surged in her heart; she had to at least stand in front of Lin Konglu and not back down.
She took the initiative to hold Lin Konglu’s hand as they walked toward Aunt Chun’s office.
Aunt Chun was just about to leave work. Seeing their solemn expressions and hearing Xu Qingqiong’s particularly grave tone, she thought something serious had happened. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“Aunt Chun,” Xu Qingqiong took a deep breath, “we’re getting married.”
The atmosphere fell silent for a few seconds.
Aunt Chun: “Are you sure?”
Xu Qingqiong nodded.
Aunt Chun looked at Lin Konglu. “And you?”
Lin Konglu also nodded.
Aunt Chun: “Is the date set?”
Xu Qingqiong: “The 20th. Just over a week from now.”
Aunt Chun: “Okay.”
Aunt Chun: “Anything else?”
Xu Qingqiong shook her head.
Aunt Chun stood up and calmly walked past the two of them, preparing to head home.
Xu Qingqiong couldn’t gauge her attitude. “You’re not angry?”
“Why should I be angry?” Aunt Chun glanced at her expression and said open-mindedly, “You can break up after being together, and you can get a divorce after being married.”
Xu Qingqiong: “…”
Aunt Chun added, “Of course, the main reason is that I’m getting older. My heart is at peace, and I don’t feel like getting physical.”
“And besides, I’m in my sixties. I don’t have heart disease, but I do have high blood pressure. If I say a few too many words and you two start arguing back, and I suddenly can’t catch my breath—well, that would be the end of me. Against two young people like you, I couldn’t win a fight anyway. My health comes first.”
Xu Qingqiong: “…”
Even though Aunt Chun put it that way, it was clearly obvious that she was supportive.
The matter was brushed aside so lightly that even after returning home, Xu Qingqiong still felt a sense of unreality. It was as if all the mental preparation she had done beforehand hadn’t been needed at all.
Aunt Chun was not a blood relative, but she was closer than one. The feeling of gaining a family member’s support always brought a sense of peace.
Lying in bed, Xu Qingqiong found herself unable to sleep. She poked Lin Konglu’s shoulder. “Hey.”
Lin Konglu: “Hmm?”
Xu Qingqiong asked, “Are you happy?”
Lin Konglu: “I am.”
Looking at her expression and remembering what she had said earlier that day, Xu Qingqiong took hold of her wrist. But then, acting on a sudden impulse, she didn’t feel for the pulse. Instead, she gently pressed her palm against Lin Konglu’s chest.
A heartbeat is different from a pulse. The heartbeat thudded against her palm, stronger, more deafening, and utterly undisguised.
Xu Qingqiong: “Why is your heart beating so fast right now?”
Lin Konglu didn’t speak; she just looked at her.
Xu Qingqiong felt the heartbeat under her palm suddenly quicken even more.
With the first impression overturned, everything seemed to change. If coldness was just a way to mask her emotions, then what was the real Lin Konglu like…?
The thought made her heart itch with curiosity.
Xu Qingqiong quickly pulled her hand back and vaguely changed the subject. “We haven’t ordered our wedding rings yet.”
Because Xu Qingqiong had previously thought they could just buy something ready-made, she hadn’t given it much thought until now.
“Let’s find some time to pick a style. I remember Cong Yun tried a few brands before…”
Lin Konglu interrupted, “No need.”
Xu Qingqiong didn’t hear her clearly. “What?”
Lin Konglu looked at her. “Do you need a ring?”
It was a strange question. What did she mean, did she need one? Xu Qingqiong replied, “But every wedding has to have rings.”
Lin Konglu lowered her eyes to stare at Xu Qingqiong’s fingers. Tentatively, she circled the base of her ring finger, stroking it gently.
It tickled a little.
Xu Qingqiong rarely wore decorative rings and couldn’t quite stand the sensation, so she struggled and pulled her hand away.
Time flew by, and the wedding day arrived quickly.
To her surprise, Lin Konglu hadn’t prepared a ring at all.
Inside the velvet box lay a crown, encrusted with shimmering, radiant gemstones. The centerpiece was a bluish-green gem, surrounded by smaller stones like stars circling the moon.
Actually, when they were choosing the wedding dress look, there had been similar crown-like accessories—small and delicate ones.
But this crown was grander, more elegant, and incredibly precious.
As Xu Qingqiong looked on in confusion, Lin Konglu raised her arms and settled the crown steadily onto her head.
Then, Lin Konglu bent her knee slightly and performed a hand-kissing gallantry.
A conversation from that day immediately flashed through Xu Qingqiong’s mind:
She had described Lin Konglu as looking like a little mermaid in that wedding dress.
Lin Konglu had replied that she preferred queens.
What did Lin Konglu mean? Was she trying to express something?
The thought flickered and passed.
The officiant announced the next segment of the wedding.
Lin Konglu cupped her face. “Close your eyes.”
It was strange; they had kissed many times before. But this kiss felt completely different.
Even though this kiss was more innocent—barely a touch before pulling away, devoid of any lust, just a simple kiss—Xu Qingqiong’s heart beat rapidly, faster than ever before.
It was as if, because of this simple kiss, their relationship was being brought out into the light of day.
In the eyes of others, they were now two lines joined together, set to travel the same path for the rest of their lives.
Partners, and family.
Xu Qingqiong had a somewhat inappropriate summary for it: the previous kisses felt like an “affair,” but this kiss felt legal.
What surprised her even more was the realization that she actually liked this feeling…!?
