- You cheated, I divorced, why are you kneeling and begging me?
- Chapter 7 - Everything Settled
Nanxi didn’t want to hide it she had been married before. Though it was an arranged marriage of convenience, some things had to be clarified upfront.
Upon hearing this, Mu Yichen’s smile slowly faded, and his expression grew noticeably more serious.
“Your past is behind you. What I want is your future,” Mu Yichen said, then added, as if afraid she might change her mind, “Your brother told me you agreed to this marriage alliance. Once a promise is made, there’s no room for regret.”
Nanxi had no intention of going back on her word.
Her love had already withered in its prime, like a flower rotting in its pot.
For the rest of her life, she only wanted to live peacefully by her family’s side. If a marriage could save the family business, why not?
“As long as you’re willing to help Nanyuan overcome this crisis, I won’t regret it. It’s just.”
“Just what?”
Nanxi explained her current situation, “I’ve only signed the divorce agreement. The formalities haven’t been completed yet.”
Mu Yichen remained unfazed. “That’s fine. I can wait.”
His calm acceptance only deepened Nanxi’s suspicion.
In the past, as the eldest daughter of the Nan family, it wouldn’t have been surprising for many accomplished suitors to pursue her. But now, with the Nan family in crisis and her being a divorced woman, she knew she wasn’t worthy of Mu Yichen. She couldn’t fathom what he saw in her.
“Why me?” Nanxi finally asked.
Mu Yichen’s mind drifted to the girl he once saw nestled in Nan Xu’s arms.
The girl who would pout and coax her brother into buying her figurines, and who would shield her brother during fights, declaring, “If you want to hit someone, hit me first.”
As Nan Xu’s college classmate, Mu Yichen had seen Nanxi many times. Back then, he simply found this five-years-younger sister amusing.
Until that one time when she protected not only Nan Xu but also him,
It was the first time a girl had ever shielded him.
Pushing the memories aside, Mu Yichen suppressed a smile and replied with just two words, “You’re suitable.”
Nanxi raised an eyebrow, puzzled.
“Nanyuan’s predicament stems from failed investments in new energy. I’ve already set up a project team to spin off Nanyuan’s new energy division and relaunch it. You’ll be the project manager.”
At the mention of work, Nanxi grew serious. “I have no objections.”
“There’s an industry banquet tomorrow. We’ll go together.”
Nanxi agreed.
After leaving Mu Corporation, she planned to go shopping for an evening gown when a tall, bespectacled man approached her. “Manager Nan, since you and President Mu are attending the business banquet tomorrow, the company has selected a suitable gown for you. It’s already been delivered to your home.”
They had arranged things down to the smallest detail.
Nanxi thanked him and returned to Xiangyuan Villa.
As soon as she entered, the housekeeper greeted her cheerfully, “Miss, the Mu family sent over a dress. It’s in your wardrobe, a huge box! You can tell they put a lot of thought into it.”
Nanxi went to her room, opened the wardrobe, and saw the gown.
Tiny, light-gray sequins dotted the skirt like scattered stars, making it look as though it belonged to a dazzling fairy.
Beside the dress was a tag that read: “Dream Fairy Dress DC.”
“The business banquet is tomorrow, and I don’t have a single suitable dress,” Lin Rufei complained, eyeing the row of gowns before her with disdain.
She had already done her research: Master DC had returned to the country, and his dreamy fairy dress was now available, only one piece in stock. If she could wear that gown in front of everyone tomorrow, she would undoubtedly capture everyone’s attention.
Qin Xiaozhe inquired at the counter and was told that the displayed pieces were all the latest haute couture collections.
“These dresses look quite nice,” he remarked.
“How can you say that? You’re not even paying attention,” Lin Rufei complained.
Qin Xiaozhe’s brow furrowed, his patience gradually wearing thin.
He had never gone shopping with Nanxi. On the rare occasions he thought to buy her clothes, no matter what he chose, she would always appreciate it never this picky.
This time, after receiving the invitation to the business banquet, he had contacted Lin Rufei. He had accompanied her from dusk till dark, yet she remained unsatisfied, nitpicking every gown.
Noticing Qin Xiaozhe’s impatience, Lin Rufei playfully hooked her arm around his neck, pinched the tip of his nose, and cooed, “Alright, these dresses are fine too, but I just want to pick the perfect one. That way, when I’m by your side, I won’t embarrass you.”
Her gentle tone softened Qin Xiaozhe’s expression. “You’d look good in anything. You wouldn’t embarrass me.”
“But I want to show you my very best. I’ve lost five years with you, I want to make it up to you.”
After Lin Rufei spoke, Qin Xiaozhe gently touched her cheek and turned to the sales assistant. “Bring out the Dreamy Fairy Dress for her to try.”
“I’m sorry, sir, but the Dreamy Fairy Dress was reserved as soon as it was released.”
Lin Rufei was displeased. “Who dares to compete with me? Cancel the reservation. Take a good look this is the CEO of the Qin Corporation.”
“My apologies, but the dress has already been collected.”
Lin Rufei’s face fell in disappointment. “Who is it? How dare they oppose me?”
Qin Xiaozhe was also dissatisfied. “Summon the designer. Have another one made.”
“I’m sorry, but Master DC only meets by appointment.”
In the end, Lin Rufei picked the most expensive gown and left, grumbling under her breath.
Having been away from the family business for years, Nanxi found herself suddenly swamped with work. Fortunately, during her time at the Gu Corporation, though only an assistant to the general manager, Qin Xiaozhe had delegated significant authority to her. Handling the family company’s affairs now wasn’t too difficult.
She pored over documents until the early hours of the morning before finally going to bed.
The next day, she had to attend a banquet starting at ten. Despite the late hour, Nanxi woke up early, worked for a while, and then changed into her outfit.
She was attending the banquet as the project manager of the Mu Corporation. Originally planning to meet Mu Yichen at the company, she was surprised to find him already there when she descended to the second floor, sitting on the sofa and sipping tea.
“Good morning,” Nanxi greeted.
The morning sunlight streamed down like golden threads through her thick, lustrous hair. The faint smile in her dimples carried an air of grace and composure. The shimmering sequins on her dress reflected dazzling light, casting an indescribable allure upon her. Time flowed like a tranquil stream, serene as ever, as if she had returned to her youthful days.
Mu Yichen was momentarily captivated, taking a long moment before he finally stood up and averted his gaze. “You look beautiful today.”
“Thank you.”
“The dress suits you well.”
“Thank you for your trouble, President Mu.”
“From now on, just call me Yichen.”
Nanxi didn’t hesitate. “Yichen.”
A grey Bugatti appeared at the banquet venue.
Recognizing Mu Yichen, countless industry elites came forward to exchange greetings.
Yet before any greetings could be exchanged, he opened the rear car door and helped a woman step out by the hand.
This prominent figure, known for his impeccable reputation, had never been seen with a female companion in public, let alone personally assisting one out of a car.
The crowd buzzed with astonishment, gathering closer to catch a glimpse of which young lady was fortunate enough to have won Mu Yichen’s favor.
