- Chapter 6 - The First Encounter
“What?” Qin Xiaozhe’s voice rose sharply.
Nanxi had actually left. It seemed she was truly angry this time.
After five years of marriage, he had grown accustomed to having her around. How could she just walk away like this?
“Rufei, I need to go back and check on things.”
Just as Qin Xiaozhe was about to leave, Lin Rufei grabbed his arm. “Nanxi is really something. When resigning didn’t work, she pulls this stunt. She must be doing it on purpose, just to make you rush back and apologize to her.”
Hearing this, Qin Xiaozhe calmed down. “You’re right. I shouldn’t spoil her too much.”
First, she stormed off and resigned, and now she’s pulling this running-away-from-home act, all to force an apology from him.
What was wrong with him just being there for Rufei during her toughest time? When had Nanxi become so petty?
Qin Xiaozhe stayed to accompany Lin Rufei as they admired the flowers, spending most of the day together. By the time he returned home, the sun had already set behind the western hills.
“Nanxi, pour me some water,” Qin Xiaozhe called out as soon as he entered.
“Sir, here’s your water.”
Qin Xiaozhe took the water, took a sip, and frowned when he saw it was Auntie Chen. He set the cup down. “Why is it you? Where’s Nanxi?”
In the past, whenever he came home late, Nanxi would have tea ready and greet him with a smile.
“Sir, I called you earlier. The madam has left.”
She really left?
“Has she not returned yet?”
“No.”
He had thought she was just throwing a tantrum, pretending to run away from home. He never expected she would actually go.
How audacious!
After returning to his room, Qin Xiaozhe tried calling Nanxi, but as soon as the call went through, a mechanical voice responded: “The number you have dialed is busy.”
He tried again, but it was still busy.
She had blocked him.
Qin Xiaozhe took off his coat and noticed something piled in the trash. Picking it up, he saw it was a photo of the two of them, torn to shreds.
“Sir, the madam gave me a few necklaces. I thought about it, and they’re too valuable. I should return them to you.” Auntie Chen came in from the doorway and handed Qin Xiaozhe several boxes.
Inside the boxes were exquisite platinum necklaces, all four identical.
She had actually given away the anniversary gift he had given her to Auntie Chen.
Crash!
Qin Xiaozhe was so furious he felt his lungs would explode. He threw the necklaces to the ground. What was she trying to do? Tearing up their photo wasn’t enough, now she was giving away his gifts too.
Auntie Chen was startled. “Sir, should we try to bring the madam back? I know it’s not my place to say, but after so many years of marriage, and given how much she loves you, if you find her and comfort her properly, she is still your most important family.”
“Let her go. I want to see how long she can last.”
Xiangyuan Villa.
Nanxi stood at the entrance of Building 8, staring at the familiar door in front of her, hesitating to step inside.
Five years. She had left home back then after a quarrel with her family. Never did she imagine she would return in such a wretched state.
“Miss, it really is you!” The nanny spotted Nanxi, took her suitcase from her, and pulled her inside.
“Your parents have been talking about you nonstop, and your brother has been thinking of you too. Knowing you were coming back, they had us prepare your room early.”
Nanxi followed the nanny to her room.
The decor was exactly the same as it had been five years ago still pink, warm, and cozy.
“Where are my parents and my brother?” Nanxi asked softly, worried they might still be angry with her and unwilling to see her.
“Your parents went abroad for business, and your brother.”
The nanny lowered her head as she spoke.
Nanxi’s heart sank. Her brother, five years her senior, had always cared for her deeply. With their parents busy working, she had practically grown up in his arms. It seemed she had truly hurt his feelings this time.
“The young master has gone to another province to expand the business. This is the letter he left for you, Miss.”
Nanxi took the letter and read its contents. Though the message was brief, tears streamed down her face as she finished.
It turned out that the family business was in crisis. To secure their future, her brother had traveled to another province to explore new opportunities, entrusting the company to her and appointing her as the general manager to stabilize the situation.
From the moment she stepped inside, Nanxi had noticed that the antique paintings and calligraphy were gone, along with all the valuable decorations. The house felt empty, without a single piece of decent furniture left. It was clear the company was indeed facing a severe crisis.
Over the years, she had let her family down. Now, when they needed her most, she couldn’t back away.
Wiping her tears, Nanxi handed her luggage to the nanny to put away. Without bothering to eat, she hurried to the Mu Corporation.
She needed to meet Mu Yichen, the man who had offered to help them overcome this crisis through a marriage alliance. She had to see him as soon as possible.
“Hello, I’m Nanxi, the general manager of Nanyuan Group. I need to speak with President Mu on an urgent matter.”
Her brother had always loved art. Since they were children, he had hoped Nanxi would grow up quickly to take over the family business, freeing him to pursue his artistic dreams.
But things hadn’t gone as planned. Unwilling to be confined to the role of general manager, Nanxi had left home quietly before she was fully prepared.
Left with no choice, her brother had shouldered the responsibility of general manager until now.
Now, bearing this heavy responsibility, Nanxi felt she had already failed her brother. She could no longer evade her duties as general manager.
She would face the current crisis head-on in her role as the company’s leader.
She had assumed that someone of Mu Yichen’s status would be difficult to meet without an appointment. To her surprise, the receptionist’s smile brightened upon hearing her name. “President Nan, let me take you to see President Mu.”
With a nervous heart, Nanxi arrived at the door of the CEO’s office. The secretary had already announced her arrival. After thanking her, Nanxi stepped inside.
“You’re here.”
A gentle voice greeted her. Following the sound, she saw a man seated at the tea table. Dressed in a black shirt and trousers, with his sleeves rolled up, his slender fingers and tall frame exuded an air of elegance and nobility.
“President Mu.” With just one glance, Nanxi concluded that this must be Mu Yichen, the president of the Mu Corporation and the man proposed for their marriage alliance.
Mu Yichen set down his teacup and looked toward Nanxi.
His eyes, dark and brilliant like obsidian, were just as dazzling as she remembered from their childhood. His features had matured, his contours refined and radiant, though his tightly pressed lips hinted at her troubled state of mind.
“Have a seat.” Mu Yichen gestured to a nearby chair.
Without hesitation, Nanxi sat down. Anxious about the company’s predicament, she began speaking as soon as she was seated. “President Mu, I apologize for the sudden visit, but I believe you’re aware of the difficulties Nanyuan is facing. We”
“Try this.” Mu Yichen pushed a cup toward her.
She was in no mood for tea.
Out of respect, she picked it up and took a sip. But after one taste, she froze. Looking down, she was even more surprised. “Fully sweetened coffee?”
So preoccupied with work, she hadn’t even noticed that he hadn’t brewed tea but coffee instead.
Fully sweetened coffee was her favorite, and it tasted just like the one she used to have at home.
How did he know?
“Your brother mentioned you like it fully sweetened.”
No wonder.
After speaking, Mu Yichen’s expression turned more serious. “Let me introduce myself. My name is Mu Yichen, CEO of the Mu Group. I’m in good health with no hidden illnesses, 30 years old, and have no other bad habits.”
Nanxi froze. Why did this sound so much like a matchmaking routine?
As a prominent figure in the industry, Mu Yichen was sought after by socialites and celebrities alike. Why would he want to marry a divorced woman like her?
Her confusion got the better of her, and she couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Mu, are you aware of my situation?”
