- Chapter 46 - Bribing the Brother-in-Law
Mu Yichen brought Nanxi home.
As soon as they entered, they saw Nan Xu sitting in the living room, leisurely eating fruit.
“Brother, what brings you here?” Nanxi smiled as she walked over and sat beside him.
Nan Xu placed the fruit platter in front of his sister. “I need to talk to him about something.”
But when he caught sight of Mu Yichen, he noticed the injury on his cheek and laughed. “Who’s so impressive that they managed to mark you up?”
Having known Mu Yichen for so many years, it was always this guy who injured others. He had never seen Mu Yichen get hurt before it was truly rare.
Mu Yichen walked over. “I got into a fight with Qin Xiaozhe.”
“You couldn’t beat him? Back in school, there wasn’t a fight you couldn’t win.”
Mu Yichen didn’t respond, instead turning his gaze to Nanxi, his eyes soft.
Nan Xu followed his gaze and suddenly understood. “You didn’t do it on purpose, did you?”
Mu Yichen had indeed done it intentionally. After getting injured, Nanxi had personally applied medicine to his wound. That tenderness had left him savoring the moment for a long time.
At the time, he just wanted to see what Nanxi would do if both he and Qin Xiaozhe were injured.
Her helping him with the medicine was an unexpected bonus, and he was very pleased.
Nanxi looked up at Mu Yichen.
Mu Yichen shot Nan Xu a glare and warned him, “Brother-in-law, think carefully before you speak.”
Nan Xu choked back his words, realizing that if he exposed Mu Yichen today, this guy would surely spill all his old secrets.
He couldn’t afford to lose face in front of his sister.
He laughed heartily. “Qin Xiaozhe is such a scoundrel for hitting you like that. Xixi, you should take good care of him.”
Mu Yichen’s lips curled into a pleased smile.
The nanny finished preparing the meal, and the three of them sat down at the table.
Throughout the meal, Mu Yichen kept putting food on Nanxi’s plate. Even the shrimp was peeled and placed in her dish.
“You should eat too,” Nanxi said.
Mu Yichen raised his hands, which were covered in red oil. “It’s inconvenient. Feed me.”
Nanxi paused for a moment, then picked up a piece of food and brought it to his mouth.
Across from them, Nan Xu nearly choked at the sight.
After coughing for a while, he glared at Mu Yichen. “You brat.”
“Brother-in-law, think carefully before you speak.”
At Mu Yichen’s reminder, Nan Xu immediately backed down and lowered his head to eat.
Having been force-fed a mouthful of dog food, the meal instantly lost its flavor.
He had thought that as the brother-in-law, he could finally keep Mu Yichen in check. But now, this guy kept threatening him with his past embarrassments.
He regretted it he shouldn’t have married his sister off to him.
After the meal, Nanxi went to her room to rest, while Nan Xu followed Mu Yichen to the study.
Once the door was closed, Nan Xu could no longer hold back. He grabbed Mu Yichen by the neck. “You think you’re something, don’t you? I’m your brother-in-law! If you keep threatening me with my past, I’ll take my sister away.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Mu Yichen handed him a key.
Nan Xu looked down. “What’s this? Are you giving me a house or a car? You think a lousy key can bribe me? As if I’d care”
Before he could finish, Mu Yichen spoke. “It’s what you’ve always wanted the most. Open it and see for yourself.”
Nan Xu took the key and followed Mu Yichen’s pointing finger to a cabinet. He opened it, and inside was a stunning landscape oil painting.
“This” He was stunned. “It’s R’s oil painting! Where did you find it? You can’t buy this on the market. It’s absolutely perfect, so amazing!”
Nan Xu gazed at the painting, unable to take his eyes off it, completely captivated.
“Still thinking of taking your sister away?” Mu Yichen asked.
“No, no. It’s good for her to stay with you.” Nan Xu’s attention was entirely on the oil painting.
Though he didn’t know how Mu Yichen had acquired this painting, once it was gifted to him, it was his. After all, he was his brother-in-law he deserved it.
Seeing Nan Xu’s expression, Mu Yichen curved his lips into a faint smile. A mere brother-in-law was naturally easy to handle.
“It’s getting late. You should head back.”
Hearing this, Nan Xu snapped out of his trance. “Kicking me out so soon? What’s the meaning of this? Am I in your way?”
“Indeed, you are.”
“…”
Nan Xu finally caught on and pointed at Mu Yichen. “Listen here, brotherhood is one thing, gifts are another. My sister married you, so you better not bully her in the future. Otherwise, I’ll tell her that the family project crisis was fake, the arranged marriage was fake, all of it was your scheme.”
Mu Yichen glanced at him. “You were an accomplice.”
At those words, Nan Xu was completely dumbstruck.
Damn, he’d been played.
“If I ever cooperate with you again, I’m a dog.”
Mu Yichen smiled subtly. “Besides this painting, I also bought R’s exhibition hall. We’ll split the profits fifty-fifty.”
“Deal!” Nan Xu exclaimed excitedly.
R’s exhibition hall an opportunity that couldn’t be bought at any price. Only a fool would refuse.
Mu Yichen looked at his exhilarated expression. “You’re a dog.”
“What do you mean? I’m your brother-in-law, you ”
“You just said if you cooperate with me again, you’re a dog.”
Nan Xu froze, then, realizing what had happened, pointed at Mu Yichen. “You little.”
He stormed off in a huff.
Watching his retreating figure, Mu Yichen chuckled.
Brother-in-law handled.
Easier than he’d expected.
After finishing his work emails, Mu Yichen returned to the room.
Nanxi had just finished showering and was drying her hair.
Mu Yichen walked over and took the hairdryer from her hand. “Let me help you.”
Nanxi was taken aback and turned to look at him.
Though they were already married, they were still unfamiliar with each other.
She wanted to say she could manage, but Mu Yichen had already picked up a comb and started helping her.
His movements were gentle and patient. Nanxi gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Five years had changed many things she was no longer as young as she once was.
Sensing her melancholy, Mu Yichen set down the hairdryer and slowly wrapped his arms around her from behind. “You’re just as beautiful as before.”
As Mu Yichen held her waist, a shiver ran through Nanxi. She seized on the key detail in his words. “You’ve seen me before?”
“Many times. When I came back with your brother, I saw you refusing your parents’ matchmaking attempts.”
Nanxi had no recollection. At the time, she had been arguing with her parents and hadn’t noticed Mu Yichen.
She smiled bitterly. “I was young then, believing love was something I had to find myself. Never thought I’d end up agreeing to an arranged marriage.”
The irony was, the love she had found had betrayed her efforts and wasted her youth.
Mu Yichen offered no judgment. Whether good or bad, he respected Nanxi’s past.
He simply turned her around and took her hand. “Thank you for agreeing to marry me.”
Mu Yichen’s sincerity was evident, and during their time together, Nanxi had found herself growing happier.
“Thank you for accepting everything about my past,” Nanxi said.
Hearing this, Mu Yichen gave her a warm embrace.
Nanxi leaned against Mu Yichen’s shoulder, feeling the breadth of his embrace. It brought her a sense of steadiness and security, her restless heart gradually settling and calming down.
The ringing of the phone interrupted their moment.
Seeing that it was Qi Zhengchu calling, Nanxi’s heart skipped a beat, and she answered immediately.
“Nanxi, the old master has fainted.”
