- You cheated, I divorced, why are you kneeling and begging me?
- Chapter 4 - What Kind of Thing?
Deng Xiu strode in wearing a beige cheongsam, one hand nearly jabbing Nanxi in the forehead.
This mother-in-law had never shown Nanxi a pleasant expression since the day she entered the family. She always believed Nanxi had married above her station, that snagging her son was a blessing earned over several lifetimes. She would find fault with Nanxi at every turn, whether there was a reason or not.
If it weren’t for the old master’s protection, she would have forced the two to divorce long ago.
In the past, to avoid putting Qin Xiaozhe in a difficult position, Nanxi would endure her mother-in-law’s provocations. Whatever was demanded, she would comply; whatever insults were hurled, she would listen without retort, hoping to keep the peace and maintain family harmony.
But now, she had already discarded her husband, why would she care about a nitpicking mother-in-law?
She brushed aside the hand reaching for her and retorted coldly, “Your son is busy dating his mistress. I told him Grandpa wasn’t feeling well, but he didn’t have time to visit. I came to the old residence to see Grandpa it has nothing to do with Qin Xiaozhe.”
As for whom Qin Xiaozhe wanted to bring home, that was his own business. Nanxi wasn’t interested.
“Stop using the old master as an excuse.”
“Auntie, Nanxi isn’t lying. The old master’s blood pressure is high, and she came specifically to check on him.” Qi Zhengchu interjected upon seeing the two argue.
As Qin Xiaozhe’s friend, he had some understanding of the Qin family dynamics. He had witnessed how much effort Nanxi put into caring for the old master’s health, while the Qin family’s attitude toward her was far from friendly.
Since Qi Zhengchu was her son’s friend, Deng Xiu gave him face and responded with a smile, “Xiao Qi, don’t speak up for her. This woman is full of schemes. She’s just using the old master to protect herself so she can cling to her position as the Qin family’s daughter-in-law. She should take a piss and look at her reflection does she even know her own worth? Is she worthy?”
“Someone who’s always talking about pissing and looking in the mirror those who know you might recognize you as Qin Xiaozhe’s mother, but those who don’t would think you’re some shrew from who-knows-where.” Nanxi fired back without holding back, repaying insult with insult, feeling a surge of satisfaction in her chest.
Deng Xiu nearly fainted from rage.
She had never seen her daughter-in-law act like this before. The usually gentle and obedient girl had always followed her every command without question even when she called her stupid, she never dared talk back.
But now, she actually dared to insult her, and with such vulgarity!
This was outright rebellion!
Pointing at Nanxi, Deng Xiu began to berate her, “Have you lost your mind? How dare you talk to me like that! I’ll have my son divorce you. There are plenty of well-bred young ladies waiting to marry him. Someone as unrefined as you will never set foot in my house again!”
“As for your broken-down door, I wouldn’t come even if you begged me. And just so you know, it’s not that your son doesn’t want me, it’s that I don’t want him. A man who can’t keep his eyes off other women while married is nothing but trash.”
“Nanxi!” Qin Xiaozhe’s voice cut through the air as he entered, having overheard her harsh words. His tone was icy.
The moment he stepped inside, he was met with the two women arguing, instantly ruining his good mood.
Especially after hearing Nanxi’s final remarks, his face turned ashen.
She had actually followed him to the old residence, it seemed she was here to tattle to the elders.
Seeing her son return, Deng Xiu poured out her grievances, “Look at what kind of wife you married! I’m her mother-in-law! Since when does a junior treat an elder like this? She has no upbringing at all.”
Lin Rufei, seeing the situation, stepped forward to support her and comforted, “Auntie, don’t be angry. Getting upset is bad for your health.”
“Listen, this is how a well-bred young lady should behave. Rufei is so considerate and caring, unlike some people who have no respect for their elders and throw a tantrum at the slightest criticism.” After saying this, Deng Xiu held Lin Rufei’s hand. “Rufei, if only you were my daughter-in-law.”
Lin Rufei blushed shyly. “Auntie, Xiaozhe is wonderful. I’m just not fortunate enough.”
“You’re divorced now, right? I’ll take charge and arrange an engagement between you and Xiaozhe, so you can become part of our Qin family.” At this point, Deng Xiu shot her son a glance. “Take a good look and see who’s better. Hurry up and get a divorce, then marry Rufei.”
Qin Xiaozhe interrupted her. “Alright, Mom. Rufei rarely visits, so let’s make sure she’s properly welcomed.”
“Yes, yes, yes.” Deng Xiu cheerfully went to the kitchen to give instructions. When she returned and saw Nanxi, she snapped, “What are you standing there for? Get out. You’re not welcome here.”
If not for her concern for Grandpa, Nanxi wouldn’t have stayed a second longer.
She turned and headed to Grandpa’s room.
“What are you doing? Going to tattle to the old man?” Deng Xiu immediately moved to block her.
As Deng Xiu was about to lay hands on her, Nanxi dodged.
Seeing this, Qin Xiaozhe frowned and said, “Coming to the old residence with me wasn’t enough? Now you have to worry Grandpa too? Nanxi, why are you so inconsiderate?”
Qi Zhengchu couldn’t stand it anymore. “Xiaozhe, Nanxi is here to see Grandpa.”
“Grandpa is fine. What does he need her for? Is she a doctor?” Qin Xiaozhe retorted, then turned to Nanxi. “Go back. Don’t disturb Grandpa here.”
Nanxi shot back, “What if I refuse to leave?”
“You don’t have a choice.” Qin Xiaozhe called for security.
“Let’s see who dares!” The commotion outside woke Grandpa. Leaning on his cane, he stepped out and saw Nanxi being held by security on both sides.
“Dad, why are you awake? It’s all Nanxi’s fault for disturbing your rest,” Deng Xiu said.
“Shut up.”
Deng Xiu reluctantly closed her mouth.
Qin Xiaozhe spoke up. “Grandpa, has Nanxi been complaining to you again?”
“You shut up too!”
Qin Xiaozhe swallowed the rest of his words.
Seeing this, Lin Rufei tugged at Qin Xiaozhe’s arm and stepped forward to explain. “Grandpa Qin, it’s like this, Xiaozhe isn’t deliberately targeting Nanxi. He just doesn’t want her to disturb your rest.”
Grandpa motioned for security to release Nanxi, then turned his gaze to Lin Rufei. “And what are you?”
“Grandpa, she’s”
“Let her speak for herself. Has she lost her tongue?” Grandpa cut off his grandson.
Lin Rufei’s face fell. Biting her lip, she introduced herself, “Grandpa, I’m Lin Rufei, the only daughter of the Lin Group, and a friend of Xiaozhe’s.”
Grandpa sneered. “The Lin family’s daughter, huh?”
“Yes.”
“The same Miss Lin who abandoned Xiaozhe back then to marry abroad? What, no one wants you now, so you come crawling back to my grandson?”
Lin Rufei lowered her head, tears welling in her eyes.
“Grandpa!” Qin Xiaozhe raised his voice, displeased that Grandpa was giving Lin Rufei a hard time.
Grandpa snorted, then beckoned Qin Xiaozhe over. When his grandson stood before him, he smacked him on the back of the head. “What kind of riffraff are you bringing home? She comes to you after a divorce, and you don’t even realize you’re her backup plan, right in front of your wife! Have you lost your mind? Can’t tell who’s family and who’s not? Get her out of here now.”
“Grandpa, Rufei isn’t.”
“She’s nothing but trouble. Knowing you have a wife, yet still throwing herself at you. she’s either foolish or wicked. And you actually brought her home? Are you trying to drive me mad?”
Before Qin Xiaozhe could respond, Lin Rufei covered her mouth and ran off in tears. “Grandfather doesn’t like me. I’ll leave right now.”
“Rufei.”
Qin Xiaozhe chased after her.
