- You cheated, I divorced, why are you kneeling and begging me?
- Chapter 29 - Self-Righteousness
As work was winding down, Nanxi received a call from Qi Zhengchu, who needed to see her about something.
Although Qi Zhengchu was Qin Xiaozhe’s close friend, Nanxi had interacted with him frequently over the past few years. As a doctor, he had been most attentive to the elderly gentleman’s health. Without a second thought, Nanxi agreed to meet him.
“I’ll take you home,” Mu Yichen said, arriving at her office after work to escort her.
“I have plans with a friend,” Nanxi replied.
Given Qi Zhengchu’s unique position, she deliberately avoided mentioning which friend, hoping Mu Yichen wouldn’t press further.
To her surprise, Mu Yichen simply nodded without asking any questions, only reminding her, “Be careful on your way, and let me know when you get home.”
With that, he turned and left.
From the moment he entered until he departed, Mu Yichen hadn’t asked a single question about where she was going or who she was meeting.
Nanxi felt a wave of relief.
If it had been Qin Xiaozhe, he would have interrogated her relentlessly, especially since she was meeting a man alone, as if fearing she might do something improper.
But Mu Yichen had given her ample space and trust.
After packing her things and leaving the office, Nanxi headed to the restaurant as agreed.
Seeing Qi Zhengchu, she grew anxious. “Is Grandpa feeling unwell?”
Lately, due to the tension with Qin Xiaozhe and the demands of juggling work, Nanxi hadn’t found the time to visit the elderly gentleman.
Qi Zhengchu had never asked to meet her alone before, and on her way over, Nanxi grew increasingly worried, could it be related to Grandpa’s health?
Qi Zhengchu shook his head. “Grandpa is fine.”
Only then did Nanxi relax. “That’s good. What did you need to see me about?”
No sooner had she asked than a familiar figure approached, sitting down beside Qi Zhengchu and staring directly at Nanxi.
At the sight of Qin Xiaozhe, Nanxi’s expression stiffened. She immediately stood up and turned to leave.
“What’s the meaning of this? You leave as soon as I arrive?” Qin Xiaozhe demanded, seeing her about to go.
Nanxi sneered. “Don’t you know what I mean? I don’t want to see you.”
“Then who do you want to see? That old man Zhao Dong?”
As the two were on the verge of arguing, Qi Zhengchu quickly intervened. “Alright, enough. Since we’re all here, let’s talk calmly.”
He urged Nanxi, “Xiaozhe came to me, hoping to arrange a meeting with you. You haven’t been answering his calls, and he’s realized his mistakes. No matter what, you’ve been married for so many years. It’s worth having a proper conversation.”
Nanxi retorted, “There’s nothing to discuss with him.”
Qin Xiaozhe glared at her coldly. “I made time specifically to see you, and this is the attitude you give me?”
“Say less,” Qi Zhengchu nudged Qin Xiaozhe’s arm. “Nanxi is a good person. Speak nicely and avoid making things unpleasant.”
With that, Qi Zhengchu turned and left, giving the two some space.
Nanxi sat back down. “You wanted to talk? Then talk.”
Qin Xiaozhe had used Qi Zhengchu to lure her out. If she avoided this now, who knew what he might do next? A man like him wouldn’t stop until he got his way. Gritting her teeth, she decided to hear him out.
Qin Xiaozhe looked up, casting a sidelong glance at Nanxi. Seeing her dismissive attitude, his eyes filled with displeasure. “How long are you going to keep this up?”
“You think I’m the one making a scene?” Nanxi pointed at herself, her face a mask of disbelief.
Ever since signing the divorce papers, she had thought that after all this time, Qin Xiaozhe would at least recognize his own faults. Yet, to her surprise, even though he was the one who had cheated and initiated the divorce, in his eyes, it was still her fault she was the one making a scene.
Ignoring Nanxi’s question, Qin Xiaozhe made his demand, “You’ve made enough of a fuss. It’s time to come back.”
“Ha.” Nanxi laughed as if she had just heard a joke. “So you’re saying I should pretend nothing happened, and we go back to how things were? Qin Xiaozhe, you’ve got quite the imagination. What, are you willing to give up Lin Rufe? Planning to abandon her?”
At the mention of Lin Rufe, Qin Xiaozhe’s tone softened noticeably, losing its earlier harshness. “My relationship with her won’t affect what we have. Just come back obediently. I can even promote you at the company. We’ll act like nothing ever happened.”
Nanxi burst into laughter. “So you’re not planning to marry Lin Rufe anymore? Or is it that after being with her, you realized she’s not as perfect as you imagined, and now you’re having second thoughts?”
Seemingly struck by her words, Qin Xiaozhe’s expression darkened as he tried to mask his thoughts with anger. “That’s none of your business. You’ll resign from Mu Corporation tomorrow. The company needs you now. Some of the clients you used to handle are causing issues with their contracts. It’s your responsibility to fix them.”
After all that, Nanxi finally understood Qin Xiaozhe’s real intention. So he just wanted her to solve his problems for him.
He was here to ask no, demand her help, yet his tone made it sound as if she couldn’t survive without him and had no choice but to return and clean up his mess. It seemed she had been too good to him in the past, so good that he’d forgotten his own place.
She let out a cold laugh, the sound growing louder and more mocking.
Qin Xiaozhe’s face grew increasingly unpleasant as he demanded, “What are you laughing at?”
Nanxi thought to herself, if Qin Xiaozhe knew that she was the one who had deliberately caused all these troubles for him, she wondered how he would react. She had done it all to teach him a lesson, to watch him struggle in crisis.
Back when she had built those business relationships, she had invested so much effort. Now, she was simply withdrawing her contributions, there was nothing wrong with that.
Stopping her laughter, Nanxi sneered, “Lin Rufe is the company’s vice president now. Why don’t you have your dear Vice President Lin handle it?”
Qin Xiaozhe’s face tightened as he pointed at her. “You’re still jealous, aren’t you?”
He had thought she no longer loved him, but now it seemed she was just upset about his relationship with Rufe. Women were always petty. Given Nanxi’s feelings for him, he believed she would run back into his arms the moment he gave up Rufe.
But right now, he had no intention of indulging her. More importantly, he had no plans to part ways with Rufe.
“Jealous?” Nanxi retorted with a cold laugh. “If you marry Lin Rufe, I’ll be the first to congratulate you.”
There was a time when she might have been jealous, but now she knew the truth, he had never truly cared for her. All these years, she had merely been a substitute. There was nothing left to cling to.
With that, Nanxi turned and walked away.
Her departure, however, only served to infuriate Qin Xiaozhe further.
He grabbed her arm, refusing to let her leave, and raised his voice, “I’ve come personally to ask you to stay. What more do you want? I do care for Rufei, but we are still husband and wife. I never intended to give up on you.”
“You’d better give up. I don’t care at all.” With that, Nanxi pushed Qin Xiaozhe’s hand away and turned to leave.
“Nanxi! Stop right there!”
Nanxi walked away without looking back. Qin Xiaozhe shouted after her, but seeing her ignore him completely, he grew furious and slammed his hand heavily on the table. After a moment’s thought, he rushed out after her.
After leaving, Nanxi took out her phone and forwarded the recording she had just made to Lin Rufei.
She had recorded every word Qin Xiaozhe said earlier. She wondered what Lin Rufei would think upon hearing it.
