- Chapter 10 - Crossing the Line
She had expected his opening words to be accusations or warnings, but instead, what she heard was concern. “Did he bully you?”
Nanxi looked up, meeting Mu Yichen’s gaze. His deep eyes were soft, filled with genuine concern that seemed utterly sincere.
She couldn’t help but recall Qin Xiaozhe’s domineering, tiger-like glare when he was angry. Throughout all these years of knowing him, he had always been like this, whatever he decided was always right, forceful and overbearing, never once considering her feelings.
Now that they were finally separated, she wouldn’t continue to compromise herself. Shaking her head, she replied, “I’m fine.”
“If you need any help, you can come to me,” Mu Yichen offered.
How could she trouble him with such matters? “I’ll handle it myself. It won’t affect the alliance between our families.”
Her top priority now was to stabilize the marriage alliance and save her family’s business. Everything else was irrelevant.
Noticing the bitterness in her eyes, Mu Yichen slowly curled his fingers under the table. He could tell she was still in pain and needed time to heal.
He wanted to help her but worried that doing too much might affect her negatively. So he held back, deciding to watch over her quietly and offer assistance when necessary.
“Alright.”
The conversation felt too awkward. Nanxi turned away, picked up the gift box from the floor, and handed it to him. “Here, I’m returning the dress.”
It was a haute couture piece by Master DC, incredibly valuable. Since they weren’t married yet and their engagement was merely nominal, she didn’t want to owe him too much.
Mu Yichen replied, “Once it’s bought, it’s yours.”
Nanxi shook her head, recalling Qin Xiaozhe’s humiliating remarks about her wearing such clothes. “I don’t have any suitable occasions to wear it.”
Mu Yichen observed her expression closely. It was clear she liked the dress but lacked the confidence to wear it, perhaps because she hadn’t dressed up like this in a long time.
He pushed the gift box back toward her. “Nanxi, you need to learn to love yourself. This dress is yours, and you deserve it. Besides, as your fiance, it’s only right for me to buy gifts for you.”
Nanxi didn’t refuse again. She understood that her relationship with Mu Yichen was an alliance essentially a marital transaction. In business, reciprocity was key. By accepting his gift, she could reassure him that she would fulfill her role effectively.
“Thank you,” she said, accepting the dress.
Unaware of her thoughts, Mu Yichen opened a drawer and handed her a business card.
Nanxi took it, and upon seeing the name on the card, she looked up at him in surprise.
“It’s Zhao Dong.”
“Do you know him?”
Of course, Nanxi knew him.
Having worked as Qin Xiaozhe’s assistant for so many years, she had interacted with numerous corporate executives. Zhao Dong left a deep impression on her not only because of his exceptional abilities, having risen from an ordinary salesperson to vice president, but also because he was an employee of the Lin Group.
However, she had heard that Zhao Dong was recently fired.
“He was the vice president who got dismissed from the Lin Group,” Nanxi added.
Mu Yichen’s voice was firm and appreciative. “His capabilities are sufficient for a CEO position.”
Nanxi understood immediately. “You mean we should hire him as the CEO of our Nanyuan Group.”
Mu Yichen nodded. “Zhao Dong’s dismissal is related to Lin Rufei.”
This was news to Nanxi.
But that woman, Lin Rufei, was arrogant. After spending a few years abroad, she thought she had what it took and actually drove away Zhao Dong, the company’s most crucial figure.
“The Lin and Qin families plan to collaborate, but Zhao Dong voiced opposition and was maliciously dismissed.”
“No wonder.”
Such a talented individual wasn’t valued by the Lin family, but there are certainly places that would appreciate him.
Nanxi immediately made a decision. “I’ll go meet him.”
Her brother had no interest in business, and she was currently focused on reversing the family’s failed decisions. With most of her time spent at the Mu Corporation, she truly couldn’t spare the attention to manage Nanyuan.
Nanxi took the business card and turned to leave, but then she suddenly remembered something and looked back at Mu Yichen. “Thank you.”
“How will you thank me?” Mu Yichen asked with a smile.
“I’ll treat you to a meal.”
“Alright.” Mu Yichen stood up with a smile, but as soon as he rose, his brow furrowed and he sucked in a sharp breath.
Nanxi noticed the anomaly. “What’s wrong?”
When the old man had lost his temper earlier, his cane had struck Mu Yichen’s back, but he naturally wouldn’t tell her that. “It’s nothing. You go ahead with your work. We can have that meal another day.”
Not long after Nanxi left, the secretary reported, “President Mu, Qin Xiaozhe, the general manager of the Qin Corporation, is here to see you.”
“Not interested.” Mu Yichen refused.
The Qin Corporation had repeatedly proposed collaborations with the Mu Corporation, but Mu Yichen had always turned them down.
Many of the Qin Corporation’s projects were rather shady, and Mu Yichen disdained partnering with such a company. However, because of Nanxi, he had turned a blind eye all these years and never exposed them.
“Wait.” Recalling Qin Xiaozhe’s attitude toward Nanxi, Mu Yichen suddenly spoke up. “Let him in.”
“President Mu, it’s an honor to finally meet you.” Qin Xiaozhe entered, followed by Lin Rufe. Upon seeing Mu Yichen, he extended his hand.
Mu Yichen ignored the handshake and swept a cold gaze over him. “What do you want?”
Before Qin Xiaozhe could speak, Lin Rufe stepped forward from behind him. “President Mu, we came to inform you of something. You’ve been deceived.”
“Oh?”
“Your employee, Nanxi, was actually fired from our Qin Corporation for violating company regulations. She must have concealed the fact that she was dismissed when she joined the Mu Corporation. I’m worried that someone like her could ruin the company, so I came specifically to let you know.”
Mu Yichen’s gaze was like a blade, scraping across Lin Rufe’s smug face, his voice cold as iron. “Is that so?”
“Yes, and there’s one more thing you definitely don’t know. Her identity she is the wife of our President Qin. However, she made some mistakes and divorced him. Who would have thought she’d turn around and start working at the Mu Corporation? Just think, someone like her, who can turn on you in an instant, and even used the Mu Corporation’s name to attend a banquet, she will surely damage the Mu Corporation’s reputation in the future.”
“And your point is?”
“My point is, someone with no professional ethics like her is not fit to work at the Mu Corporation. You should fire her to avoid unnecessary losses.”
Thud! As soon as Lin Rufe finished speaking, Mu Yichen picked up a folder from the desk and threw it directly at her.
The folder hit Lin Rufe’s arm, startling her. She shrank back to Qin Xiaozhe’s side.
Qin Xiaozhe shielded her, checking on her with a concerned glance. Seeing she was unharmed, he turned to Mu Yichen. “What is the meaning of this, President Mu?”
“As far as I know, President Qin hasn’t even filed for divorce from his wife. Yet here you are, openly bringing another woman to my office to expose your own wife. Your behavior is truly eye-opening!”
Qin Xiaozhe’s face darkened.
“This is my private matter!”
“So you do know!” Mu Yichen retorted. “Since you understand personal matters are private affairs, let me remind you this is Mu Corporation. Whom Mu Corporation employs is my prerogative. You bringing your mistress to my company to expose your former wife has crossed the line!”
Lin Rufe refused to give up. “President Mu, we were only trying to help you.”
“Save your tricks. Not everyone is a fool to be manipulated by you.”
Qin Xiaozhe felt Mu Yichen’s words were directed at him. “President Mu, that’s hardly appropriate to say.”
“Clutching fish eyes while mistaking them for pearls, Qin Xiaozhe the day will come when you regret this. Pity you won’t get another chance.”
