Why Won’t the Heroine Break Up With Me? [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 29
As the horizon began to lighten with the first hint of dawn, Tang Congyue, lying on the double bed, jolted awake. Instinctively, she reached out to the side, and upon feeling a warm, soft body, she relaxed. She then turned over and pulled Yun Li, who had been facing away from her, into her embrace. Her well-proportioned and strong arms wrapped firmly around Yun Li’s slender waist, and she buried her head in the fragrant hollow of Yun Li’s neck.
After a while, Tang Congyue couldn’t resist pressing her pale, thin lips lightly against Yun Li’s skin.
In her sleep, Yun Li felt a tickling sensation at her neck. She stirred slightly, showing signs of waking. Tang Congyue snapped back to reality and quickly stopped, whispering into her ear, “It’s alright, A-Li, go back to sleep.”
No longer feeling the tickle, Yun Li stopped moving and drifted back into a deep slumber.
Seeing this, Tang Congyue gave her neck one last kiss before holding the warm, fragrant softness in her arms tightly and falling back asleep.
By the time Tang Congyue woke up for the second time, the sky was fully bright, but she still had no intention of getting up. Instead, she held Yun Li in her arms, savoring the fleeting warmth and intimacy.
“Mmm…”
After an indeterminate amount of time, Yun Li let out a soft murmur from within her embrace. Her eyelids fluttered slightly, and after a moment, she slowly opened her eyes. Her dreamy, peach-blossom eyes were still heavy with sleep.
“Awake?”
As she spoke, Tang Congyue gently kissed her forehead.
Yun Li’s consciousness gradually returned. Her soft, slightly hoarse voice murmured, “What time is it?”
“Let me check.” Tang Congyue picked up her phone from the side. “It’s 7:53.”
Thinking it was still early, Yun Li snuggled closer into Tang Congyue’s embrace, about to drift back to sleep, when a knock sounded at the door.
“Is that Yaqin?”
At this hour, it could only be Zhu Yaqin knocking.
“I’ll go see.”
Tang Congyue released Yun Li and got up to answer the door. Sure enough, it was Zhu Yaqin.
Seeing Tang Congyue looking as if she had just woken up, Zhu Yaqin was taken aback.
“You’re still not up?”
It was almost eight o’clock!
“No, is there something matters?”
“Ah, I wanted to ask if you’re going for breakfast. If you are, we can go together.”
Tang Congyue thought for a few seconds. “Wait a moment. A-Li and I will freshen up first.”
“Alright, I’ll go back and wait for you. Just knock on my door when you’re ready.”
“Sure.”
Tang Congyue closed the door and returned to the room, only to find that Yun Li, who had wanted to sleep a little longer, was already sitting up. Her eyes looked dazed, giving her an adorably clueless expression.
“You heard?”
Yun Li hummed in response.
“Then let’s get up.”
“You go freshen up first.”
The bathroom was small and couldn’t accommodate both of them at once.
Tang Congyue agreed and went into the bathroom.
By the time she came out, Yun Li had already changed into the women’s clothes they bought the day before, a light green tracksuit. The pale-colored outfit accentuated her fair skin, and her long, brown curly hair was tied up in a bun, revealing her slender, swan-like neck. She looked pure and captivating.
Unconsciously, Tang Congyue’s gaze lingered a little longer.
“What’s wrong?”
“You look beautiful.”
Yun Li was slightly taken aback, but when she realized Tang Congyue was complimenting her, she suppressed the urge to smile and put on a proud expression. “Of course! Do you even know who I am? ‘Born with beauty that cannot be cast aside’, that’s me.”
Tang Congyue: “…”
Give her an inch, and she’d take a mile.
But she had to admit, Yun Li was genuinely beautiful, the most stunning woman she had ever seen. From the very first encounter, Tang Congyue had been captivated, leaving a deep impression on her.
She walked over and affectionately pinched Yun Li’s cheek.
“Alright, hurry up and freshen up. Don’t keep Zhu Yaqin waiting.”
Yun Li: “…”
She let out a soft hum, pouted, then swatted away Tang Congyue’s mischievous hand and headed straight for the bathroom.
Ten minutes later, Yun Li emerged, still damp, and noticed Tang Congyue was also wearing light green athletic wear. She raised an eyebrow slightly.
Seeing this, Tang Congyue simply said, “We’re ready. Let’s go find Zhu Yaqin.”
“Sure.”
The two walked one after the other out of the room and arrived at Zhu Yaqin’s door. Tang Congyue knocked, and shortly after, Zhu Yaqin opened it, her eyes lighting up.
“Oh ho, are you two wearing matching outfits?”
Yun Li and Tang Congyue remained silent. Unbothered, Zhu Yaqin stepped out, closed the door, and said, “Let’s head to the cafeteria.”
“Let’s go.”
“By the way, were you two okay yesterday?”
Yun Li looked over, puzzled.
Tang Congyue’s expression remained calm. “We’re fine, no need to worry.”
Zhu Yaqin relaxed and let out an “Oh.”
Yun Li blinked. “What are you talking about?”
“Nothing.” Tang Congyue shook her head.
At that moment, Zhu Yaqin spoke up, “Yesterday afternoon, I went out again and spent one credit to hire a guide. I got a full rundown of the entire South City Base.”
Without waiting for them to respond, she continued, “The South City Base is mainly divided into these areas: residential zone, trading zone, mission zone, farming zone, administrative zone, and research zone. The cafeteria is located near the square, by the way, the square is where we got off the vehicle yesterday.”
“Oh, and I also found Fang Huijing and the others. I gave them the credits you gave me.”
Tang Congyue felt reassured by Zhu Yaqin’s efficiency.
“Thank you.” she said.
Zhu Yaqin waved her hand dismissively. “Hey, no need to thank me! It’s nothing, just a small matter.”
A faint smile appeared on Tang Congyue’s face.
“Besides that, I also looked into how to earn credits. The safer options are working within the base, jobs like helping in the cafeteria, farming in the agricultural zone, constructing buildings and walls, or joining the base’s patrol team. The more dangerous method is leaving the base to hunt monsters and trading their meat for credits.”
“Speaking of hunting monsters, there’s something worth mentioning: in the South City Base, survivors can form teams and accept missions in the mission zone to earn credits.”
At this point, Zhu Yaqin glanced at Tang Congyue.
“Tang Congyue, are you interested in forming a team or joining one?”
Tang Congyue was strong. Based on what Zhu Yaqin knew of her, it was unlikely she’d settle for working inside the base. That left only one way to earn credits: hunting monsters. So, the question remained, would she prefer to join a team or form her own?
Zhu Yaqin placed great importance on this matter because she wanted to team up with Tang Congyue. If Tang Congyue joined another squad, she would follow; if Tang Congyue formed her own squad, she would join it.
Hearing this, Tang Congyue pondered for a few seconds before replying, “Let’s not rush this for now.”
Zhu Yaqin frowned slightly but, remembering she still had over three hundred points and wouldn’t starve in the base anytime soon, she restrained her impatience. “Alright, it’s not too late to let me know once you’ve made up your mind.”
At that moment, Tang Congyue glanced at Zhu Yaqin. “Okay.”
About twenty minutes later, Yun Li and the others, led by Zhu Yaqin, arrived at the cafeteria situated not far from the square.
As soon as they entered, they ran into “old acquaintances”, Ou Yunru and Huang Xinyuan, who had competed with them for the white jade bracelet the day before.
The five of them stood facing each other, and Yun Li immediately noticed the white jade pendant worn on Ou Yunru’s chest. For some reason, at first glance, Yun Li had a strong intuition that the white jade pendant and the white jade bracelet were the same, both were spatial artifacts.
Ou Yunru hadn’t expected to run into Yun Li and the others here. Her gaze involuntarily fell on Yun Li’s left wrist. Not seeing the white jade bracelet she had been longing for, she frowned slightly and asked, “Yun Li, where is your white jade bracelet?”
As soon as she spoke, Ou Yunru felt she had been too abrupt, and a look of regret flashed across her face.
Yun Li raised an eyebrow slightly. “The white jade bracelet…”
She put on a regretful expression. “After returning to the apartment yesterday, I accidentally broke it.”
Regardless of what Tang Congyue might tell Ou Yunru in the future, this was her answer for now. She didn’t want Ou Yunru to know she possessed a spatial artifact at this moment.
“How could that be?!” Ou Yunru widened her eyes in disbelief.
“Why couldn’t it be?” After saying this, Yun Li gave a meaningful glance at the white jade pendant on Ou Yunru’s chest. “When did you buy that white jade pendant? It suits you quite well.”
Hearing this, a trace of panic crossed Ou Yunru’s face, and she quickly tucked the pendant inside her clothes.
After failing to secure the bracelet the day before, she had been feeling down. So, in the afternoon, she went back to the trading area and unexpectedly came across this white jade pendant.
Almost at first sight, she felt that same intense urge, she had to have it.
This time, without Yun Li and the others around, Ou Yunru smoothly purchased the pendant.
Bringing it back to her apartment, she was indescribably excited. Later, as if guided by some inexplicable impulse, she cut her finger and dripped blood onto the pendant. And then…
She obtained a thousand-square-meter space!
Thrilled by this discovery, Ou Yunru couldn’t contain her excitement. It occurred to her that if the white jade pendant was so miraculous, could the white jade bracelet she had missed out on be the same?
At this thought, her heart raced. But then, realizing the bracelet wasn’t hers, she felt an overwhelming disappointment. So, when she ran into Yun Li and the others today, her first instinct was to check Yun Li’s wrist, wondering if she, too, had acquired a space. Not seeing the bracelet, she was momentarily stunned. Collecting herself, she answered Yun Li somewhat awkwardly.
“I bought it a long time ago.” After speaking, Ou Yunru, unwilling to give up, asked, “Did it really break? Where did you throw it? Can you give it to me?”
Then she added, “Sorry, I really loved that white jade bracelet. Even if it’s broken, I still want it.”
Yun Li: “…”
Seeing Ou Yunru’s unnatural expression, Yun Li confirmed her suspicion: Ou Yunru must have obtained a spatial ability. Thinking about it, she couldn’t help but acknowledge that Ou Yunru truly was Tang Congyue’s destined partner, blessed with protagonist’s luck, losing one spatial ability only to gain another so quickly. Yun Li sighed inwardly at her good fortune but found it exasperating that despite already having a spatial ability, Ou Yunru still want to covet her white jade bracelet.
“I threw it in the trash. I don’t know where it is now.” Yun Li shrugged, offering only this reply to Ou Yunru.
Hearing this, Ou Yunru frowned, a look of regret crossing her face. But as if struck by a sudden thought, her eyes lit up, and she pulled a bewildered Huang Xinyuan away.
Yun Li and the other two watched them leave. After a moment, Zhu Yaqin glanced at Yun Li and asked, “Did the bracelet really shatter?”
Not wanting to lie to Zhu Yaqin, Yun Li gave an ambiguous answer, “More or less.”
The white jade bracelet had transformed into a fine line branded on her wrist, how was that any different from being shattered?
Zhu Yaqin felt it was a pity and clicked her tongue twice. “That was two hundred credits!”
Half of all the credits she possessed!
And now it was just gone!
What a shame.
“Alright, what’s spent is spent. No use dwelling on it. Let’s go in.” Yun Li patted Zhu Yaqin’s shoulder comfortingly.
Zhu Yaqin, still lamenting the loss, gave Tang Congyue a thumbs-up.
Someone like Yun Li, only Tang Congyue could afford to keep her. Ah, she was truly envious.
Tang Congyue: “…”
Without a word, she followed Yun Li into the cafeteria.
…
The cafeteria had ten serving windows. Yun Li led Tang Congyue to look at each one and, deciding that the breakfast options were all fairly similar, randomly chose a window to buy a two-credit set meal. Her meal included a meat bun, soy milk, and an egg. Tang Congyue chose the same, while Zhu Yaqin spent two credits on a bowl of noodle soup.
After getting their food, the three found a table and sat down.
As soon as she sat, Yun Li eagerly took a sip of the soy milk.
“Mmm, it tastes just like I remember!” Satisfied, Yun Li narrowed her peach-blossom eyes, then grabbed a meat bun and took a big bite.
The filling was made of regular pork. Though not as delicious as monster meat, it was safe to eat without worrying about mutation.
“Delicious!” Yun Li exclaimed with feeling.
Watching Yun Li eat so heartily from across the table, Zhu Yaqin suddenly regretted not ordering a meat bun. But then again, it had been a long time since she’d had noodle soup, and even though it was just average, she still enjoyed it thoroughly.
“Yaqin, is the noodle soup good?” Yun Li asked, noticing her expression.
“Edible.”
Hearing that, Yun Li immediately lost interest.
“What are your plans for later?” Zhu Yaqin asked.
Yun Li had no ideas, so she looked at Tang Congyue.
Tang Congyue thought for a moment. “Let’s go to the supermarket again.”
The supermarket in the base was quite similar to those before the apocalypse. Tang Congyue planned to cook something nutritious for Yun Li in the apartment to help her regain strength, so she needed to stock up on a few things.
“Would you like to join us?”
Zhu Yaqin, having nothing else to do, agreed to go with them to the supermarket.
After breakfast, the three of them headed straight to the supermarket.
Initially, Zhu Yaqin thought Yun Li and Tang Congyue had simply forgotten to buy something the day before, but when she saw Tang Congyue loading a portable gas stove, portable gas canisters, a spatula, rice, seasonings, bowls, chopsticks, and even a freshly slaughtered hen from the fresh produce section into the shopping cart, she was stunned.
“Are you… planning to cook in the apartment?”
“Yes, we want to eat something good to nourish ourselves,” Yun Li answered on Tang Congyue’s behalf. Noticing Zhu Yaqin’s gaze, she added, “Would you like to join us for the meal later?”
“Can I?” Zhu Yaqin was surprised.
Yun Li was even more surprised. “Why not?”
“As long as you don’t mind,” Zhu Yaqin said with a smile. “Although I can’t cook, I can help with the preparations.”
Tang Congyue glanced at her. “Alright, you can assist me later.”
“Great.”
After finishing their shopping, the three of them left the supermarket, carrying bags full of groceries.
On the way back, many people noticed them, their gazes greedy and restless.
Observing this, Zhu Yaqin grew worried.
“Are we being too conspicuous?”
No sooner had she spoken than they encountered a patrol team. The leader was a young woman with an ability-user badge pinned to the left side of her chest. Seeing the trio laden with bags and the unsettling looks from the surrounding people, she shot a warning glare at the onlookers before turning to them and asking, “Do you need any help?”
Before Tang Congyue could respond, Zhu Yaqin spoke up.
“Yes, we do!”
“Alright, I’ll escort you back to the residential area.”
On the way back, Zhu Yaqin struck up a conversation with the young woman and learned that her name was Tian Ran, a wind-ability user currently serving as the captain of the sixth patrol team.
Before long, Zhu Yaqin and Tian Ran had become quite familiar with each other. When they reached Building B, Yun Li took two bright red apples from one of the shopping bags.
“Captain Tian, thank you so much.”
Tian Ran felt a bit embarrassed and tried to refuse, but Yun Li insisted, pressing the apples into her hands.
“Captain Tian, don’t be shy. This is our way of thanking you.”
Unable to decline, Tian Ran’s tanned face flushed slightly, and she replied stiffly, “It’s my duty.”
As fellow women, it was only natural to help each other out.
Yun Li smiled, her fondness for Tian Ran growing even more.
After exchanging a few more words, they watched Tian Ran leave before starting up the stairs.
“I wonder if we’ll have a chance to meet Tian Ran again.” Zhu Yaqin remarked along the way.
“We’re all in the same survivor base, so there’s a good chance we’ll run into her again,” Yun Li replied. Then she added, “I feel like two apples weren’t enough.”
Seeing the fruit section in the supermarket, Yun Li, who loved fruit, couldn’t resist buying a little extra.
“True.”
If not for her own limited resources, she would have liked to give Tian Ran something more.
Soon, they reached the fourth floor and were surprised to find a familiar figure standing at the door of apartment 401.
Hearing their approach, the person turned around, thick eyebrows slightly raised.
“You’re back?”
The person standing at the door of room 401 was none other than Zhao Jinhe, who lived in room 403.
Zhu Yaqin stole a glance at Yun Li and Tang Congyue before responding to Zhao Jinhe.
“Brother Zhao, is something the matter?”
“Yes.”
After saying this, he looked at Tang Congyue.
“I’ve formed a small team, and all the members are from our A University. Tang Congyue, would you like to join?”
Zhu Yaqin hadn’t expected Zhao Jinhe to act so quickly, nor had she anticipated him inviting his love rival to join the team. But then she thought that if Tang Congyue joined, Yun Li would follow suit. Couldn’t this be considered a roundabout way of achieving his goal?
With that in mind, Zhu Yaqin leisurely waited for Tang Congyue’s reaction.
Tang Congyue’s tone was indifferent. “I don’t currently have any intention of joining a team.”
“Are you planning to form your own team, then?”
Tang Congyue shook her head. “Aside from that, is there anything else?”
Zhao Jinhe couldn’t help but glance at Yun Li. Seeing her innocent gaze in return, his tone turned stiff. “No.”
“Then step aside. We’re heading back.”
Zhao Jinhe: “…”
He really didn’t get along with this woman, Tang Congyue!
He nearly laughed in frustration, his eyes fixed intently on Tang Congyue. Seeing her complete lack of reaction, he gave up and left with the words, “If you change your mind and want to join our team, remember to come find me,” before returning to room 403.
Tang Congyue then took out her keys and unlocked the door to room 401.
Yun Li and Zhu Yaqin followed her inside, one after the other.
After closing the door, the three of them crowded into the semi-open kitchen to start preparing lunch.
About two hours later, Tang Congyue had finished stewing the old hen soup and stir-frying the vegetables. The three of them enjoyed a warm meal, and even though Tang Congyue’s cooking skills were just average, both Yun Li and Zhu Yaqin ate with satisfaction.
After lunch, Zhu Yaqin helped Tang Congyue wash the dishes before returning to her own room, leaving only Tang Congyue and Yun Li in room 401.
Sitting on the sofa, Yun Li suddenly recalled what Zhao Jinhe had said earlier, which reminded her of her own task. Her lively eyes shifted as she deliberately asked, “What do you think?”
Tang Congyue was in the kitchen washing apples and paused at Yun Li’s question.
“Think about what?”
“About the survivor team.”
“I don’t have any thoughts on it at the moment. Do you?” Tang Congyue countered.
Yun Li: “…”
What could she possibly think? She was just a weakling, joining a survivor team would probably be like offering herself as a snack to the monsters.
“Don’t ask me, ask yourself.” Yun Li glared at her.
“I have no thoughts.”
Yun Li: “…”
She paused for a moment before deliberately saying, “Since you don’t have any ideas, why not join Zhao Jinhe’s team? You’re all familiar with each other, so it would be easier to get along, right? Besides, Zhao Jinhe is an ability user, and his fire-based abilities are quite powerful.”
She rarely praised Zhao Jinhe and then watched Tang Congyue’s reaction closely, only to find the girl completely unresponsive.
“Do you really want me to join Zhao Jinhe’s team?”
“Not exactly, but since you don’t have any ideas at the moment, you could at least consider Zhao Jinhe~”
“But I really don’t want to join Zhao Jinhe’s team.”
She and that immature guy Zhao Jinhe simply didn’t get along, not to mention he had designs on her girlfriend. That alone was intolerable to her.
“Why not? He’s a fire ability user!”
Tang Congyue smiled. “Are fire-type ability users really that rare?”
Yun Li couldn’t stand Tang Congyue’s expression. Crossing her arms and tilting her chin up slightly, she retorted, “Whether they’re rare or not, I don’t know, but at least they’re ability users.”
Her eyes clearly conveyed the meaning: “You’re not even an ability user yourself, so what gives you the right to say that?”
For some reason, Yun Li’s attitude made Tang Congyue’s teeth itch with irritation.
“But I am an ability user too.”
Suddenly, Tang Congyue dropped a bombshell.
Yun Li froze on the spot. After a moment of processing the words, she widened her eyes in disbelief. “Nonsense! How could you possibly be an ability user?”
Wait, Tang Congyue really is an ability user? But when did she awaken? And what ability does she have? Why doesn’t she know anything about it?!
“Why can’t I be an ability user?” Tang Congyue retorted.
Yun Li fell silent for a moment before questioning, “I didn’t even know you had an ability! When did this happen?”
“I haven’t had the chance to tell you yet.”
Yun Li still wasn’t entirely pleased. “Fine, then what ability did you awaken?”
“Something like control?”
“What?”
“Well, through my experiments, I found that I can interfere with the actions of monsters by making eye contact. That counts as a form of control, right?”
Huh, that sounds pretty impressive?
“Anything else?” Yun Li continued to ask.
“Probably not.” Tang Congyue wasn’t entirely sure.
Yun Li narrowed her eyes. Even though she secretly thought Tang Congyue’s ability was quite powerful, she deliberately said, “It doesn’t sound as impressive as Zhao Jinhe’s fire ability.”
Tang Congyue: “…”
She suddenly realized that Yun Li was acting very strangely today, why was everything she said somehow related to Zhao Jinhe?
Unavoidably, Tang Congyue felt a little jealous.
“With this ability, I single-handedly took down four monsters.” she emphasized.
“So, you already had an ability back then? And you didn’t tell me anything about it.” Yun Li’s tone carried a hint of reproach.
At this point, Tang Congyue realized she had misspoken and quickly tried to make amends, “A-Li, I didn’t mean to keep it from you. I just wasn’t sure if I had really awakened an ability.”
“Hmph, I don’t want to hear it! We’re temporarily cutting ties for ten minutes!”
“A-Li…”
“If you say another word, it’ll be twenty minutes!”
Tang Congyue shut her mouth.
Seeing this, Yun Li secretly curved the corners of her lips into a smile.
You little rascal, did you really think I couldn’t handle you?
