- Which Fierce Alpha Disguises as a Beta to Abduct a Wife?
- Chapter 50 - Losing the Ability to Release Alpha Pheromones
Jiang Huaiyan caught Zhou Yunqiu’s mischievous hands, his breathing ragged as he gasped, “We are in a car.”
They had specifically taken a driver today, and that driver was currently sitting right in the front seat.
“So what if we’re in a car? Don’t you think ‘car-play’ is very exciting?” Zhou Yunqiu smiled with a face full of anticipation.
As Jiang Huaiyan listened to those words, images that shouldn’t have appeared began to flash through his mind. His blood caught fire instantly, but strangely, there was no sign of his pheromones surging out.
He leaned in slightly, pinching Zhou Yunqiu’s chin and dropping a kiss on the corner of his mouth. “Are you sure you won’t just faint again?”
“Jiang Huaiyan!” Fainting at such a critical moment the previous night had become an eternal wound in his pride.
“Hmm?”
“We’ll only know if we try again.” Saying this, Zhou Yunqiu directly tackled Jiang Huaiyan onto the seat, straddling him to prevent any chance of him getting back up.
Jiang Huaiyan sucked in a cold breath, his blood boiling even more fiercely. Yet, he felt no impulse to release his Alpha pheromones.
What is going on?
Zhou Yunqiu didn’t give him much time to overthink; he was already getting into the “main theme.” Jiang Huaiyan was finding it hard to withstand the provocation, but just as he intended to respond, the car came to a halt.
The driver in the front spoke up awkwardly, “Young Master, we’ve arrived.” Having said that, the driver hurriedly pushed open the door and fled.
Zhou Yunqiu: “…Why did he run so fast?”
Jiang Huaiyan said helplessly, “Would you dare to eavesdrop on your boss?”
“What’s there to be afraid of?” Zhou Yunqiu huffed and pouted. “The real pity is that no one ever lets me eavesdrop.”
Jiang Huaiyan gave him a silent thumbs-up. Omegas like Zhou Yunqiu were rare in this world, and he happened to have the only one.
“Now… no one is here to disturb us.” Zhou Yunqiu’s smile was full of excitement.
Jiang Huaiyan suddenly caught the hand that was pulling at his belt. “Wait, it looks like your brother is watching us from the window.”
Zhou Yunqiu froze. He poked his head out of the window and sure enough, he saw his brother’s silhouette. Before he could pull his head back in, his phone began to ring.
“Your brother is calling.”
“Ugh, how annoying! Why is it so hard for me to just get a bite of ‘meat’?” Zhou Yunqiu climbed off Jiang Huaiyan in frustration, giving him a lingering kiss on the cheek. “I’ll help you investigate the business with your mom and my dad. But until we find the truth, don’t forget that we are currently dating.”
“Okay,” Jiang Huaiyan agreed with a smile. Having voiced the burden he had been carrying, his heart felt much lighter. The gaze he leveled at Zhou Yunqiu was filled with an undisguisable love.
“If my brother tells you to stay away from me, will you listen to him?”
“No. He and I no longer have an employer-employee relationship; I have no obligation to listen to him. Besides, the only reason he doesn’t want us together is because he thinks I’m a Beta.”
But he was an Alpha—an S-class Alpha. Now that the problems between them were almost resolved, he could stop hiding his identity. Just as he intended to share his secret with Zhou Yunqiu, his phone rang. It was a call from Duan Mingxu.
“Take the call. I’m heading back, or my brother will scold me again.” Zhou Yunqiu got out of the car first.
Jiang Huaiyan watched him leave before answering Duan Mingxu’s call. Duan Mingxu’s voice held an undisguisable trepidation: “Um, I want to tell you something. I hope you won’t get angry.”
Jiang Huaiyan frowned. “What is it?”
“That medicine I gave you last time… the one to make the gland enter a dormant state. How much did you take?”
Hearing this, Jiang Huaiyan immediately had a bad feeling. “Is there a problem with the medicine?”
Duan Mingxu’s voice grew even weaker. “It’s true that… a small problem occurred. It didn’t happen to everyone, mind you, just a few individuals.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s voice turned cold. “Speak.”
“Ahem… there was an Alpha who, after using it, couldn’t return to his Alpha state.”
“What?” Jiang Huaiyan’s voice was coated in frost. “Say that again?”
“Why are you so angry? You couldn’t possibly be… that unlucky, could you?” Duan Mingxu was starting to panic.
Jiang Huaiyan tried to calm his emotions, attempting to release some Alpha pheromones, but his gland showed no reaction whatsoever. It was no longer under his control. He took a deep breath and tried several more times. Each time ended in failure. No wonder he hadn’t felt the impulse to release pheromones when Zhou Yunqiu was provoking him—his gland had actually gone on strike!
“It couldn’t be… that much of a coincidence, right?” Duan Mingxu’s voice began to tremble.
“Duan Mingxu! Pick a way to die.”
“I… I really didn’t know this would happen! But don’t worry too much, I think it’s still treatable.”
“If it can’t be fixed, I’ll tear you into eight pieces!” Jiang Huaiyan slammed the phone down. He took several deep breaths to force himself to stay calm.
He had just been about to tell Zhou Yunqiu he was an Alpha, and now he had lost the ability to release pheromones. Who would believe that? Right now, he was a Beta through and through! The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He immediately called his other friends to inquire about treatment methods. If he lost his pheromones, he and Zhou Yunqiu would truly have no future.
The Villa.
Zhou Yunqing sat in the study, looking at Zhou Yunqiu with a complex expression.
“I can help with the investigation, but you cannot be with Jiang Huaiyan.”
“Brother, why do you keep stopping me?” Zhou Yunqiu was extremely dissatisfied. “He treats me well, and I like him very much. I just want to be with him.”
“What if his mother’s death really is related to our father?”
“Then I will break up with him.”
“You want to have a romance that you know has no future?” Zhou Yunqing looked at him in disbelief.
Zhou Yunqiu’s gaze was unwavering. “Yes. I’m not asking for a result. I just want to follow my heart and date him properly once.”
“Even if you end up shattered and broken?”
Zhou Yunqiu nodded.
Zhou Yunqing’s face suddenly turned cold. “I do not agree.”
“Brother!”
“I will not allow my brother to jump into a fire pit, nor will I allow you to find a Beta.”
“The Beta issue isn’t impossible to solve. Aren’t you researching gene-conversion drugs? When the time comes, he can become an Alpha, or I can become a Beta.”
Zhou Yunqing laughed. “You think a drug can just hit the market whenever? Who would dare use it without years of clinical trials? By the time that drug is ready, you’ll already be worn out.”
“I don’t care! I’m going to be with him. If I don’t try with him, I’ll regret it until I die.”
“I will not agree to this; get that thought out of your head.” Jumping into a pit while knowing it’s there was, to Zhou Yunqing, a very unwise decision. He had protected his brother so well not so he could get hurt. The bitterness of love was not something everyone could stomach.
“Brother, you’re a tyrant!” Zhou Yunqiu turned to leave.
“You are not allowed to go find Jiang Huaiyan, or don’t blame me for being unkind to him!”
“What are you going to do?” Zhou Yunqiu was frightened by his tone.
“If you don’t want me causing trouble for him, then stay home obediently.” Zhou Yunqing stopped looking at him. He would rather his brother hate him now than have him rush into a dead-end relationship that would hurt everyone involved.
“Brother!”
“Go to your room and sleep. I’ll say it one last time: stay away from Jiang Huaiyan!”
“You were the one who told him to protect me these few days!” Zhou Yunqiu was furious. How could his brother go back on his word like this?
“I didn’t expect you to be stupid enough to be a moth flying into a flame.”
“If you keep this up, I’ll run away from home! No one can stop my heart from flying toward him. The more you forbid us, the more I’ll insist on being with him!”
Zhou Yunqing’s face turned ashen with rage, triggering a string of coughs.
Zhou Yunqiu’s expression softened slightly. “Brother!”
“Get out.” Zhou Yunqing pushed away Zhou Yunqiu’s reaching hand.
Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes turned red with anxiety. “Do you have to force me like this? It’s so rare for me to like someone this much. Why do you have to force me to pull my heart back? But I’ve already given my heart away; it’s not like I can just take it back whenever I want. I’m not in control.”
“I know you’re doing this for my own good, but I’m not a child. I know what makes me happy, and I know which choices won’t leave me with regrets. Life is short; meeting someone you like who also likes you back is so difficult.”
“Brother, to me, giving up on him is the thing that would make me regretful. I don’t want to look back later and be disappointed that I didn’t try.”
“Brother, I really know what I’m doing. I can handle the pain of a future breakup.”
Zhou Yunqing looked at him dazed, as if he couldn’t believe this was his brother. His willful, rebellious brother actually seemed very strong.
“I’m your brother Zhou Yunqing’s brother. How could I possibly be weak?”
That night, Zhou Yunqing placed a call to Jiang Huaiyan, saying only two things.
