- Chapter 36 - Swallowed Too Much of Jiang Huaiyan’s Saliva, Perhaps?
“What kind of nonsense are you spouting?” Zhou Yunqing’s icy voice pierced the ears of both men over the phone.
Watching his best friend’s face instantly crumple, Zhou Yunqiu asked again with a serious tone, “I’m asking if you want an Omega. You aren’t getting any younger; it’s time to find an Omega and start a family. I have a very good friend—he’s exceptionally good-looking, and his personality is…”
“Zhou Yunqiu, I recall you still owe me a beating,” Zhou Yunqing interrupted.
Zhou Yunqiu’s mind was suddenly filled with the memory of his brother’s powerful roar: “Zhou! Yun! Qiu! See if I don’t beat you to death when I get back!”
“Brother, I’m sorry. This humble younger brother overstepped.” Zhou Yunqiu hung up the phone with lightning speed. He turned to Yu Shaoqin, who looked like he was about to cry. “Be good, stop liking him. He’s a total violent maniac. I’m constantly being hung up and beaten by him.”
A look of pure horror crossed Yu Shaoqin’s innocent face. “Really?”
“Really! If you marry him, your life will be over!”
Yu Shaoqin: “…”
“There are so many good Alphas in the world; take your pick.”
“But…”
“No ‘buts’! You aren’t allowed to like my brother, or we’re through!” Zhou Yunqiu threatened sternly.
Yu Shaoqin pouted, wanting to cry.
“You aren’t allowed to cry either, or I’ll poke you in the eye.”
“Qiuqiu, you’ve changed.” Yu Shaoqin glared at Zhou Yunqiu.
“How have I changed?”
“You’ve become incredibly fierce. You’ve swallowed too much of Jiang Huaiyan’s saliva, perhaps?”
“Cough, cough… cough!” Zhou Yunqiu nearly choked on his own spit.
Yu Shaoqin felt he had guessed correctly. “I knew it!”
“H-how did you know?” Zhou Yunqiu remembered that he hadn’t told Yu Shaoqin about his progress with Jiang Huaiyan.
“Your intentions are practically written on your forehead.” Yu Shaoqin rolled his eyes unceremoniously.
Enraged, Zhou Yunqiu lunged to strangle his neck. “And yet you were just playing dumb! See if I don’t choke the life out of you.”
“Cough… I-I only did that because I was pining for your brother.”
“Stop pining! If I hear another frightening word like that again, you’re finished.”
Yu Shaoqin pushed him away and sat up. “Is there really no chance?”
“None whatsoever.”
“Alright, fine. I’ll stop pining for him, then.”
Zhou Yunqiu patted his head approvingly. “That’s a good boy.”
“Then you have to introduce me to an Alpha. Preferably one with ‘double doors’ like Jiang Huaiyan—someone who can pick me up with one hand. Super manly.”
Zhou Yunqiu agreed immediately. “No problem. Leave it to me.”
“I knew Qiuqiu was the best to me. It’s a pity you can’t be my sister-in-law.” Yu Shaoqin hugged Zhou Yunqiu regretfully.
Zhou Yunqiu gave his ear a tug. “Don’t ever have those thoughts again.”
“Got it, got it. But, you and Jiang Huaiyan…” Yu Shaoqin lowered his voice. “Are you just playing around, or is it for real?”
The question stumped Zhou Yunqiu. At the beginning, he had only wanted to play around, but lately, he liked being with Jiang Huaiyan more and more. He even had thoughts of wanting to be marked by him.
Seeing his expression, Yu Shaoqin sensed trouble. He spoke to him earnestly: “Qiuqiu, you need to find an Alpha. There’s no future with a Beta.”
Zhou Yunqiu’s expression shifted slightly.
“This isn’t something we can decide. It’s your genes. Humans can’t fight against genetics; we can only try to adapt.”
“What if I become a Beta too?” Zhou Yunqiu asked suddenly.
“How is that possible? You’re an Omega; you can’t turn into a Beta.”
“Who knows what the future holds?” If his brother managed to successfully research that drug, it would be an explosive development. At that time, he might truly be able to become a Beta. He wouldn’t be affected by pheromones anymore and could be with whoever he wanted.
“You’re completely indulging in fantasy.”
“Alright, alright. Enough about my affairs. We’ll take it one step at a time. Do you want to stay for dinner? Jiang Huaiyan’s cooking is delicious.” Zhou Yunqiu offered a sincere invitation; Yu Shaoqin was his best friend, and he was happy to share.
“No. My Daddy is coming back from abroad today, so the four of us are having a family dinner.” Yu Shaoqin beamed with happiness at the thought of the father who gave birth to him.
“Go on then. If your Daddy found out you were pining for my brother, he’d break your legs.”
“You’re exaggerating. Let’s just act like I never mentioned it. Forget it!”
Zhou Yunqiu gave him an “OK” gesture.
Once Yu Shaoqin left, Jiang Huaiyan finally emerged from the kitchen. He brought out a plate of grapes for Zhou Yunqiu. “They’re very sweet. Eat more.”
“I’m not eating. I need to call my brother!” He still hadn’t asked about the Duan Mingxu situation.
“Is your skin itching for a beating again?” Zhou Yunqing asked impatiently over the phone.
“Not at all. I’m just concerned about you. I heard an Alpha has been pursuing you like crazy lately. Is it true?”
“Mm. No need to pay attention to it. He’s just a libertine.”
“Brother, you won’t… actually be moved, will you?”
“If your skin is itching, just say so.”
“My skin is perfectly fine, not itchy at all.” Reassured, Zhou Yunqiu hung up the phone and then proceeded to give Jiang Huaiyan a thorough scolding. “What is with that friend of yours? An Alpha pursuing my brother—is he insane? My brother is an Alpha! Did you recommend this? Be honest!”
“No. I told him not to act recklessly, but he wouldn’t listen.”
“I don’t believe you. Call him right now and tell him to stop harassing my brother.” Zhou Yunqiu could not accept his brother being with another Alpha. His brother was already formidable enough; he should find a sweet Omega, not a hard, unyielding Alpha.
Jiang Huaiyan pulled out his phone and dialed Duan Mingxu. Duan Mingxu answered quickly. “What are your instructions?”
“Stop harassing Zhou Yunqing,” Jiang Huaiyan said, following Zhou Yunqiu’s directive.
“No way. I’m definitely pursuing this man.”
“You dare!” Zhou Yunqiu snatched the phone from Jiang Huaiyan and began a passionate tirade at Duan Mingxu. “My brother is an Alpha, and so are you. An AA relationship has no good ending. Give up on this idea!”
“I won’t. Why are you worrying about this? I’m not pursuing you.”
“Bah! If you pursued me, my brother would beat you until you were crawling on the floor looking for your teeth.”
“Don’t worry. Even if someone like you were given to me for free, I wouldn’t want you.”
“Duan Mingxu,” Jiang Huaiyan warned in a cold voice.
Duan Mingxu shut up.
With Jiang Huaiyan backing him, Zhou Yunqiu scolded even more fiercely: “Give up on those thoughts immediately. My brother would never look at someone like you. Doing this only brings trouble to both families.”
“You should spend more time thinking about your own affairs instead, you muddle-headed egg (húdù dàn).” Duan Mingxu hung up.
Zhou Yunqiu was shocked. “He called me a muddle-headed egg? He called me an egg!”
Jiang Huaiyan couldn’t help but smile. “Don’t take it to heart. He has a foul mouth.”
“No way! You have to get justice for me. I’m an Omega and he actually called me an egg! You as a Beta might be able to endure it, but I as an Omega cannot.”
“Fine. Next time I see him, I’ll give him two punches.”
“Hit him in the face so he’s too ashamed to go out in public.”
“As you command.”
Zhou Yunqiu was satisfied.
That Evening.
Zhou Yunqiu couldn’t sit still and clamored to go out and have fun. Jiang Huaiyan took him out to see a movie. Zhou Yunqiu had this in mind all along and chose a romance film appropriate for the mood.
The two sat in the back row, watching in silence. The first half of the movie was quite oppressive, but the latter half became lighthearted and funny, even featuring a passionate scene.
Zhou Yunqiu widened his eyes, staring intently. Suddenly, Jiang Huaiyan reached out to cover his eyes.
“What are you doing?” Zhou Yunqiu grew angry and slapped his hand away.
“It’s not suitable for minors.”
“I’m an adult, okay!” Zhou Yunqiu glared at him. “This is because you refuse to let me try. If we did it a few more times, my technique would probably be better than theirs.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s face turned beet red hearing this. He switched to covering the boy’s mouth, refusing to let him speak such embarrassing words. Zhou Yunqiu made a few muffled sounds, and seeing he couldn’t break free, he licked the man’s hand instead.
The warm, moist sensation startled Jiang Huaiyan into releasing him immediately.
Zhou Yunqiu leaned in close and asked seriously, “Jiang Huaiyan, exactly how long do you plan to keep rejecting me?”
Jiang Huaiyan could not give him a clear answer.
“I’ve made it obvious enough. You promised me before, yet now you keep stringing me along—it’s really too much!” Zhou Yunqiu complained, sounding hurt. “But no matter how much you hide, you won’t be able to hide for much longer. My heat is coming soon. When that happens, you have to fulfill your promise.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s deep eyes were full of sincerity. “Have you really thought this through?”
“I’ve thought it through very clearly.”
“I am a Beta. I cannot mark you, and I cannot provide pheromones to soothe you.”
“I don’t care. As long as it’s you.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s breathing hitched.
“Jiang Huaiyan, I don’t want an Alpha. I only want you.” Zhou Yunqiu reached out to hold him, his own eyes holding a rare seriousness.
Jiang Huaiyan’s heart trembled, and he instinctively looked away from Zhou Yunqiu’s gaze.
“Hiding isn’t the answer. You are mine. You must be mine.” Zhou Yunqiu forced the man to look into his eyes.
A trace of determination finally rose in Jiang Huaiyan’s gaze. “Alright.”
“Don’t lie to me again.”
“Mm.” Just this once… he would allow himself to be reckless.
