- Chapter 32 - He Might Be Truly Fallen
Jiang Huaiyan was in the middle of a meeting at the office when he received the news. Before the company executives could even react, they saw him rush out with his phone, his face a mask of panic.
“Meeting adjourned!” Duan Mingxu chased after him, leaving a secretary behind to stabilize the situation.
Ten minutes later, the car screeched to a halt in front of the hospital. Jiang Huaiyan sprinted to the emergency department and breathlessly gave Zhou Yunqiu’s name.
“Zhou Yunqiu and the three others traveling with him are all in surgery. Are you a family member?”
“I am. But I’m not related to the driver,” Jiang Huaiyan said urgently.
The immediate family members for Zhou Yunqiu and Zhou Yunqing were currently lying in hospital beds themselves, unable to reach the scene. He was the only one who could stand in.
“Please take these forms to the cashier to pay the fees, then wait outside for further notice. We will inform you the moment the surgeries are finished.”
“Roughly when will they be done? Are the injuries severe?”
“I’m not clear on that at the moment.”
Jiang Huaiyan fought to keep himself calm. After paying the fees, he waited anxiously outside the operating theaters. By the time Duan Mingxu arrived, none of the three surgeries had concluded.
He draped an arm over Jiang Huaiyan’s shoulder to comfort him. “Don’t worry, they’ll be fine.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s bloodshot eyes locked onto him. “Investigate this. You must find the truth.”
“I’ve already arranged for people to look into it. We’ll get to the bottom of it, don’t worry.”
Jiang Huaiyan wanted to stop worrying, but he couldn’t control himself. He couldn’t stop shaking at the thought that Zhou Yunqiu might have lost his life in that accident. Remorse gripped him relentlessly. He shouldn’t have left after dropping Zhou Yunqiu at the lab. He should have waited to take him home.
The Zhou family was currently being attacked from all sides; how could he, as a bodyguard, leave? He should have stayed by Zhou Yunqiu’s side every second!
“They’re coming out, they’re coming out!” Duan Mingxu said suddenly.
Jiang Huaiyan snapped his head up and ran forward in a panic. The person on the gurney was a pale-faced Zhou Yunqiu. Looking at that face, Jiang Huaiyan’s heart—which had been suspended in mid-air—slowly settled back into place. He was still alive.
“Are you the family?” the doctor asked.
“I am,” Jiang Huaiyan replied. “How is he?”
“He was protected very well. He only injured his leg and has a mild concussion. It’s nothing serious. The driver is in much worse condition.”
“What about the other one?” Duan Mingxu asked. Zhou Yunqing was still inside.
“The other one sustained a head injury. The surgery is complicated. Please continue to wait outside.”
Jiang Huaiyan had no mental energy to spare for the others; his eyes and heart were focused entirely on Zhou Yunqiu.
“You take him back to the ward first. I’ll keep watch here and call you if anything happens,” Duan Mingxu said. He didn’t expect Jiang Huaiyan to stay and wait for news on Zhou Yunqing.
“Mm.” Jiang Huaiyan escorted Zhou Yunqiu back to the ward.
The private room was silent—so quiet that Jiang Huaiyan could hear his own breathing. He sat by the bed, silently watching Zhou Yunqiu’s face, feeling incredibly lucky that the boy was okay. If something had happened… Jiang Huaiyan didn’t dare think about it.
Since he was okay, he would wake up soon. Once the leg injury healed, he would be back to hopping around and demanding kisses every day. Jiang Huaiyan couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle at the image of the boy clinging to him for a kiss. Such a cute Omega—he had to protect him and never let him be harmed again.
2:00 AM: Zhou Yunqing’s surgery was successful, and he was moved to the ICU for observation.
5:00 AM: The driver, Ye Jun, failed his first surgery. He was rushed into a second emergency procedure. By 8:00 AM, the surgery was successful, and he was also moved to the ICU.
10:00 AM: The investigation results arrived.
A small freight truck driver had been drunk driving and overloaded, triggering a multi-car pileup that resulted in 3 deaths and 12 injuries.
Jiang Huaiyan was extremely dissatisfied with this outcome. “Just overloading and drunk driving? What about the driver? Who ordered it?”
Duan Mingxu wasn’t satisfied either, but all the evidence suggested it was a genuine accident. The truck driver had confessed and was awaiting sentencing.
“I don’t believe in such a coincidence. Keep digging until you find something.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll have my people keep looking. You can use the fact that Zhou Yunqing is injured to conduct a deep investigation into Zhou Yushen.”
Just as Jiang Huaiyan finished speaking, he heard a groan of pain from Zhou Yunqiu. He quickly looked down to see Zhou Yunqiu furrowing his delicate brows and slowly opening his eyes.
“Little Young Master?” Jiang Huaiyan called out softly, afraid of startling him.
It took a long moment before Zhou Yunqiu could see Jiang Huaiyan’s face clearly. “What happened to me?” he asked blankly. His throat was so sore it felt like he had swallowed razor blades.
Jiang Huaiyan brought over a cup of water and held a straw to his lips. “Have some water first.”
Zhou Yunqiu drank obediently. As the liquid smoothed his throat, he felt much better and his mind cleared. The memories of the previous night suddenly flooded back. He bolted upright, ignoring the pain in his leg, and gripped Jiang Huaiyan’s arm. “Where’s my brother? How is my brother?”
“He’s fine. The surgery was a success, don’t worry.”
“Really?” Zhou Yunqiu didn’t quite believe him. He remembered that when the car hit, it was his brother who had shielded his head.
“Really. Once your leg is a bit better, you can go see him.”
“I want to see him now.”
“Not right now. You just escaped death yourself; rest for a bit first.”
Zhou Yunqiu wouldn’t listen and insisted on going. Jiang Huaiyan had no choice but to tell him that Zhou Yunqing was still under observation in the ICU and couldn’t be seen.
At the mention of the “ICU,” tears began to fall from Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes. Jiang Huaiyan panicked and hurried to wipe them away with a tissue. “It’s fine. It’s just post-operative observation. Once he’s stable, he’ll be moved out.”
“He only got hurt that badly because he saved me.” The car had hit their side; if Zhou Yunqing had focused on dodging instead of shielding him, he wouldn’t have been so severely injured.
“Little Young Master, this wasn’t your fault. You are his brother; saving you was his instinctive reaction.”
Zhou Yunqiu’s tears continued to fall uncontrollably. “He’ll come out, right?”
“He will. For now, you need to recover properly. Otherwise, he’ll be worried when he wakes up.”
Zhou Yunqiu nodded through his sobs and lay back down obediently, pulling the thin quilt over himself. Jiang Huaiyan wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes, his heart aching intensely.
Zhou Yunqiu closed his eyes, only to snap them open a second later. “What about Brother Ye? He was my brother’s driver.”
“The surgery was successful. He’s also in the ICU for observation.”
Zhou Yunqiu pouted. “I hate the ICU.”
“I don’t like it either.”
“You have to hate it as much as I do,” Zhou Yunqiu corrected him unhappily.
“Alright, alright. I hate it just as much as you.” Listening to him, Jiang Huaiyan knew the adorable Zhou Yunqiu was back, lying safely by his side.
“Jiang Huaiyan, were you worried about me this time?”
“I was.” He was worried to a degree he couldn’t even describe. He realized… he might be truly fallen for this boy.
“Do you think it’s a shame you didn’t get to sleep with me yet?”
Jiang Huaiyan: “???”
“I think it’s a shame. Luckily I only hurt my leg.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“Once my leg is better, I definitely have to sleep with you as soon as possible. Otherwise, if something else happens later, I’ll have lost out too much.”
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Jiang Huaiyan said, his thick brows furrowing.
“You have to allow for the possibility of these things happening.”
“I won’t. From now on, I’m going wherever you go. No one will hurt you under my watch again.”
Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “It seems you really like me. In that case, shouldn’t you give me an emotional kiss for surviving this disaster?”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…What is going on in your head all day long?”
“Do you really want to know?”
Jiang Huaiyan nodded. He truly wanted to know; no Omega had ever been this crazy about him before.
