- Chapter 11 - I’m Angry, You Have to Coax Me
“It’s just thunder…” Jiang Huaiyan felt utterly helpless.
“The lights are gone, it’s pitch black, and it’s terrifying.” Zhou Yunqiu’s voice carried a slight tremble, sounding incredibly pitiful.
But Jiang Huaiyan didn’t buy it. Zhou Yunqiu was indeed afraid of the dark; usually, his room was well-lit regardless of whether it was day or night. To prevent any electrical issues, a backup generator had even been installed so that a blackout would be impossible.
“The lights are really out. I turned on the backup generator and it didn’t work,” Zhou Yunqiu explained, as if sensing Jiang Huaiyan’s skepticism.
“It’s already very late…”
Zhou Yunqiu interrupted him: “When you first came to my side, you promised my brother you’d protect me well. Now that I’m scared, you won’t come? Is this how a bodyguard should act?”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“Two years ago, when they kidnapped me, they locked me in a pitch-black room. They didn’t give me food or water, and they even released rats to scare me.”
“I don’t know how many days I stayed in there. By the time I saw the light again, my fingers were chewed to the bone. I don’t even know if I chewed them myself or if the rats did it.”
“…Now, I feel like there are rats all around me. They won’t stop screeching in my ears. It’s so noisy, so noisy…”
Jiang Huaiyan couldn’t listen anymore. He immediately threw off his bath towel, changed into clean clothes, and headed out. “Wait there. I’m coming over now. Don’t do anything impulsive.”
“Don’t hang up. I want to hear your voice.”
“Mm.” Jiang Huaiyan started the car and sped toward Zhou Yunqiu’s villa.
During the drive, Zhou Yunqiu talked to him constantly. Most of it was mundane daily chatter—asking what he had eaten, what he wanted to eat tomorrow, what he liked. Jiang Huaiyan felt impatient, but he didn’t hang up. At a time like this, if he hung up, Zhou Yunqiu would surely lose it.
“Why don’t you ever ask me anything? You’re so cold.” It had been Zhou Yunqiu doing all the talking while Jiang Huaiyan only gave short answers, which made him unhappy.
“I’m driving.”
“You don’t drive with your mouth.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“Sing a song for me.”
“I don’t know how to sing.”
“Jiang Huaiyan, you’ve changed.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…How have I changed?”
“You’ve become disobedient. Before, you used to do whatever I told you to.”
Before, you weren’t this outrageous! Jiang Huaiyan didn’t dare say it aloud and could only complain in his head.
“Just sing. Your voice is so nice; singing would definitely sound sexy,” Zhou Yunqiu said, his voice softening.
The tone made Jiang Huaiyan imagine him wagging a big, fluffy tail while trying to please him—it was quite cute.
Cute?
Jiang Huaiyan found his own thought terrifying and immediately cooled his tone: “I need to focus on driving.”
“Drive if you want to drive, but why are you being so mean?”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…My apologies.”
“I’m angry. You have to coax me.”
“…I don’t know how.”
“If you don’t know, then learn!”
The two of them chatted back and forth aimlessly. Although Jiang Huaiyan didn’t initiate any topics, he responded to almost everything Zhou Yunqiu said. This kept Zhou Yunqiu’s emotions stable—until a torrential downpour began.
“Jiang Huaiyan, why aren’t you here yet?”
“Almost there.”
“I feel a bit unwell.” Zhou Yunqiu’s voice was shaking.
Jiang Huaiyan accelerated and pulled the car smoothly to a stop in front of Zhou Yunqiu’s villa. The house was shrouded in total darkness.
Was it actually broken?
He checked the power switches downstairs first. They were all in the “on” position, yet none of the lights would turn on. Using his phone’s flashlight, he anxiously headed upstairs and knocked on Zhou Yunqiu’s locked bedroom door. “Young Master, open up. I’m here.”
The door was pulled open quickly, and a figure lunged into his arms, hugging him tightly. That familiar lime scent swirled into his nose. He took a sharp breath, intending to push the person away.
However, the person in his arms was shaking. If he breathed in carefully, he could smell that the pheromones were tinged with fear. The hands intended to push him away turned into a comforting pat on the back. “It’s okay now. I’m here.”
“You didn’t believe me,” Zhou Yunqiu muffled his accusation against his chest, his voice choked with tears.
“It was my fault. I’m sorry.” He had truly thought it was just another trick to lure him over for more flirting.
Zhou Yunqiu sniffled and pulled back from the embrace. “Go fix the lights. I can’t breathe in this darkness.”
Ever since that kidnapping, he couldn’t stand dark environments. If it hadn’t been for the light from his phone just now, he might have felt like he was suffocating.
“I’ll go check the generator.”
“I’m coming with you.” Zhou Yunqiu didn’t dare stay alone. He reached out and grabbed Jiang Huaiyan’s large hand.
Jiang Huaiyan’s fingertips flinched. He was about to pull his hand back when he noticed something was wrong. Why did his hand feel sticky?
Jiang Huaiyan pulled the boy’s hand up and shone his phone light on it. To his horror, he saw that the fingers were covered in nearly dried blood. His heart sank, and he tilted the light toward Zhou Yunqiu’s face.
Zhou Yunqiu closed his eyes, his delicate brows furrowed. “What is it?”
As he spoke, he revealed traces of blood on the corners of his lips.
“Are you stupid?!” Jiang Huaiyan’s anger surged to the top of his head.
“What did I do? Why are you yelling at me?”
“Look at your own hand.” Jiang Huaiyan lifted the injured hand for him to see.
Looking at his blood-stained hand, a look of surprise crossed Zhou Yunqiu’s face. “This… did I bite this?”
“Who else? Didn’t it hurt?”
“I didn’t know. I just… I just felt so uncomfortable…” He had been in such a state of extreme panic that everything felt painful; he hadn’t even realized he was biting his own fingers.
Looking at his bewildered face, Jiang Huaiyan’s anger dissolved into helplessness. “Go downstairs. We need to treat these wounds first.”
“No. Fix the lights first.” Staying in this environment for even one more minute was agony.
“Fine.” Jiang Huaiyan took him by the wrist, leading him to find the generator.
There were two generators: one upstairs and one downstairs. The one upstairs was useless; no matter how many times Jiang Huaiyan tried, the result was the same.
How could it be useless? He checked them every week, and the last inspection was only the day before yesterday. Something that worked two days ago shouldn’t be broken today.
A flash of lightning suddenly illuminated the sky outside, scaring Zhou Yunqiu into hugging Jiang Huaiyan tighter. Pheromones of fear began to leak out uncontrollably again.
Jiang Huaiyan pulled him close, comforting him in a low, gentle voice: “It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t be afraid. I’m here. There’s no danger.”
His voice did a wonderful job of soothing Zhou Yunqiu. The fearful pheromones gradually began to recede.
“Shall we go check the one downstairs?”
“My legs are weak. Carry me down.” Zhou Yunqiu pushed his luck, nuzzling his head into Jiang Huaiyan’s chest.
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
In the end, he helplessly carried him downstairs. The generator downstairs was also non-functional; the entire villa remained pitch black.
Jiang Huaiyan felt even more suspicious now. For two generators to fail simultaneously was far too coincidental.
“Young Master, wait here for a moment. I’ll go outside and see what’s going on, okay?”
“No. I don’t dare stay here alone. Take me home.” Zhou Yunqiu’s voice started to tremble again.
“Take you to which home? To the eldest Young Master’s place?”
“Your house. I want to go stay at your house.”
