- Chapter 1 - An Alpha Disguised as a Beta
“Qiuqiu, how can you be so careless? Your heat is starting, and you didn’t even prepare inhibitors in advance.”
Hearing the Alpha’s reproachful words, Zhou Yunqiu’s heart sank to the bottom of an abyss.
Fang Yanting was his fiancé, an arrangement made since childhood. He had planned to have his fiancé mark him today and then follow their elders’ wishes to marry, but Fang Yanting clearly had no intention of doing so.
After all… the Omega he truly loved wasn’t Zhou Yunqiu.
“I have things to do, I’m hanging up. Have the bodyguard, Jiang Huaiyan, bring you the inhibitors.”
“I’m in the middle of a heat right now—aren’t you worried Jiang Huaiyan will mark me?” Zhou Yunqiu’s voice trembled with distress.
“He’s a Beta,” Fang Yanting said before hanging up immediately.
Listening to the dial tone, Zhou Yunqiu suddenly burst into a short, sharp laugh.
Right. He always forgot that his powerful, seemingly omnipotent bodyguard was a Beta. He couldn’t mark an Omega, and he was immune to pheromones.
Resisting the rushing torrent inside his body, Zhou Yunqiu dialed his bodyguard’s number with a shaking hand: “I need inhibitors. Hurry!”
The moment he hung up, he could no longer withstand the internal torment. He tumbled onto the floor, writhing in pain. His skin felt like it was on fire, and his bones felt as if they were being gnawed on by ants. He clawed at his own body, his breath hitching in uncontrollable gasps.
When Jiang Huaiyan pushed the door open, this was the scene that met him.
A thick, pungent scent of lime hit him straight in the face. His expression changed instantly; he retreated hurriedly and injected himself with a high-potency inhibitor. The invisible fire inside him, fueled by the Omega’s presence, was gradually extinguished by the chemical intervention.
He took a deep breath, ensuring he wouldn’t be triggered into an early rut, before pushing the door open again.
“Quick, give it to me…” Hearing the movement, Zhou Yunqiu tried to get up to grab the inhibitor. But as soon as he stood, his head spun, and he began to collapse.
Jiang Huaiyan caught him with practiced reflexes.
The Omega, sensing a familiar presence, instinctively burrowed into his arms, seeking the soothing pheromones of an Alpha. But the person holding him had no pheromones—not even a trace.
Frustrated, Zhou Yunqiu bit Jiang Huaiyan hard on the shoulder, his own pheromones lashing out wildly in his agitation. Jiang Huaiyan’s face tightened slightly as he held his breath, but his expression remained stoic. He calmly carried Zhou Yunqiu to the bed.
“Little Young Master, I will help you with the injection.”
Seeing Jiang Huaiyan’s chiseled, handsome face remain so indifferent while he was suffering through a heat, Zhou Yunqiu snapped. He reached out and pounded on the man’s chest in a fit of pique.
“Why are you so useless? You don’t have any pheromones at all! What a waste of an Alpha’s physique!”
The veins on Jiang Huaiyan’s forehead pulsed slightly.
Thinking the bodyguard was defiant, Zhou Yunqiu spitefully tried to kick him near the groin, but Jiang Huaiyan caught his ankle mid-air.
“Little Young Master, if we don’t use the inhibitor now, it will be too late,” Jiang Huaiyan said sternly.
Two years ago, Zhou Yunqiu had been kidnapped, and his glands were damaged, resulting in extremely unstable pheromones. Every heat required timely inhibitors; otherwise, the consequences could be life-threatening.
Even the bodyguard knew this. It was impossible for Fang Yanting not to know, yet he had refused to come. The message was clear, and Zhou Yunqiu understood it all too well.
His eyes reddened with tears as he extended his wrist, which was already bruised from his earlier thrashing on the floor. Jiang Huaiyan avoided the bruised areas and carefully injected the inhibitor.
“Want to sleep for a bit?” Jiang Huaiyan asked as he brought over a first-aid kit to treat the minor scrapes on the youth’s wrist.
“It hurts… I can’t sleep.” The inhibitor hadn’t kicked in yet; everything still felt unbearable.
“Endure it. It will be better soon.”
“Hold me.” Zhou Yunqiu reached out to him.
An Omega in heat desperately craves affection. Since his own Alpha didn’t love him, he could only turn to the person currently closest to him.
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t move. “Little Young Master, I am just a bodyguard.”
“I am your boss! you must obey me!” Zhou Yunqiu glared at him. “Hold me.”
If Fang Yanting could love other Omegas, then he could love other Alphas—or Betas.
“Little Young Master…”
Angry, Zhou Yunqiu lunged forward, pinning Jiang Huaiyan down onto the bed. “You’re a Beta, what are you afraid of me for? Are you worried I’m going to eat you?”
Jiang Huaiyan exerted every ounce of his will to suppress the restlessness in his body. He wasn’t worried about Zhou Yunqiu; he was worried about himself.
“I just want to lie with you for a while,” Zhou Yunqiu muttered, leaning against the man’s chest and inhaling the faint scent of aftershave. He closed his eyes.
A long time passed. Seeing that Zhou Yunqiu had finally fallen asleep, Jiang Huaiyan tried to rise carefully. But as he moved to lift the youth off him, Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes snapped open.
“Where are you going?” Zhou Yunqiu asked softly, his eyes misty as if he feared being abandoned at any moment.
“To prepare food for you,” Jiang Huaiyan replied in a flat tone.
“I don’t want to eat.” Zhou Yunqiu hugged him tighter, rubbing his head against the crook of the man’s neck. “Are you really just a Beta?”
What kind of Beta stands at 192cm, is covered in lean muscle, and looks like he could take down five men with one punch?
Jiang Huaiyan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “Yes.” A disguised one.
“Then just stay with me forever. Anyway, you aren’t affected by my pheromones.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“Should I give up on Fang Yanting and find a different Alpha?” Zhou Yunqiu’s inhibitor had finally taken effect, granting him a rare moment of clarity during his heat.
The Zhou and Fang families were old friends. Since he was a child, people had told him that if he and Fang Yanting turned out to be an Alpha and an Omega, they would marry. He had spent his whole life viewing Fang Yanting as his Alpha. As it turned out, it was all wishful thinking.
“The Little Young Master should do whatever he feels is right.”
“Do you want an Omega?” Zhou Yunqiu looked up at him.
Before Jiang Huaiyan could answer, Zhou Yunqiu’s face fell into an expression of annoyance. “I forgot. You’re ‘incapable.’ Even if you wanted one, it would be useless.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “???”
Incapable? Where on earth did this little brat get the idea that he was incapable?
