- Chapter 13 - Zerg World 13, So, What Is Your Choice?
Admit it; you were on my boat long ago, tied to me from the start.
Inside the magnificent banquet hall, Alex stood in a corner holding a glass of champagne. He watched the military female Zerg, who was dressed in formal attire and surrounded by a crowd like a moon among stars. In a daze, he suddenly remembered the words the male had whispered in his ear that night in Friedrich’s garden.
“You heard them, didn’t you? Even though you have been enduring and yielding, they are still plotting against you.”
“Alex, you need to think clearly. Once you drink that glass of wine, what happens next will be out of your control. And at that time,”
The beautiful, pure-looking male had looked down and gently wiped Alex’s lower lip, which he had bitten in anger. The movement was soft, and his blue-gray eyes seemed full of heartache, yet his words were cold.
“No Zerg will help you. And neither will I.”
A smart Zerg must learn to judge the situation. Once, twice, but not a third time. If the number of rejections grows too high, the game is no longer fun.
So, good boy, you should know what to do next, right?
Within the amber champagne, bubbles raced to burst the moment they touched the air. The liquid swayed slightly, making the reflections within appear illusory and ethereal, much like Alex’s own wavering heart.
Was he really going to do it?
In his hesitation, the female couldn’t help but bite his lower lip again. Only this time, there was no male there to indulge this behavior, which was considered quite ungraceful in the eyes of the nobility.
“Alex, where are your manners!”
A sharp voice suddenly rang in his ear, carrying the same warning tone Alex had heard since childhood. Almost instantly, Alex straightened his back as a reflex. His lips, marked by his teeth, were pressed tight. He only spoke once the female Zerg who had called out drew near.
“Marshal Saxon.”
As expected, he still struggled to distinguish the proper titles for females in different social settings. Or rather, he simply didn’t know when he would ever be allowed to call the other “Father.”
Perhaps that time would never come. Alex stared down at the wine glass in his hand, the corners of his mouth twitching in a self-mocking smile. At this moment, Alex desperately wanted to be alone and far away from everyone around him.
However, Marshal Saxon, standing beside him, gave him no such opportunity. With a slight arch of his eyebrow, the Marshal looked at the son who resembled him seventy percent of the time. His eyes held no trace of affection or pride, only criticism and dissatisfaction.
“Head up, chest out! What is with this shrinking violet act?”
Marshal Saxon frowned and slapped Alex on the back. After a pause, he continued his guidance.
“I’ve been watching you from over there for a long time. What are you doing standing here in a daze? Don’t you know to go out and socialize with your colleagues?”
“You’ve been in the military for so long; do I still need to teach you how the world works? Look at Friedrich; so many Zerg are competing to talk to him. When will you be able to have people surrounding you with compliments so I can finally have some pride?”
Alex remained silent.
“Oh, and another thing,” Marshal Saxon grumbled, finally remembering the task the Zerg Emperor had given him this morning. “After the banquet begins, remember to tell His Majesty, in front of Lord Ryan, that you do not wish to break your engagement with Lord Elio. Also, make sure to talk more with Lord Elio. I recall that since you two got engaged, you haven’t applied for a single date with him.”
The female continued to drone on. Usually, Alex would not interrupt him; he even cherished these rare moments of being alone with his father. Today, however, he simply couldn’t listen, nor did he want to.
For the first time, Alex interrupted him. “Marshal, why? Why do I have to be the one to say I don’t want to break the engagement?”
Alex couldn’t help but think back to the day of the meeting, where the female had also commanded him from on high to hand over the management rights of Mogras.
But why? Why was he always the one who had to yield? Why was he always the one playing the “bad” role?
“And you should know that my mental power is still unstable. This is exactly when I need Lord Ryan’s pheromones, isn’t it?”
The Zerg opposite him fell silent, as if he hadn’t expected his normally obedient son to dare question him. When he spoke again, his tone was much sharper than before.
“Exactly when you need Lord Ryan’s pheromones?”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat. Sure enough, the next second brought a suffocating string of questions.
“So, you mean you want to be with Lord Ryan? Just because he gave you pheromones? Alex, when did you become so lacking in restraint? Is it that any male who gives you a little pheromone can lead you away?”
“No, I just,”
“Just what?” Marshal Saxon cut him off directly. “I know that Lord Ryan might become the only S-rank male in the Zerg race after his second evolution. But Alex, you should know that ‘might’ is only a possibility. What if he is still an F-rank after his evolution? You won’t even have a place to go to regret it then!”
Alex gripped the wine glass tighter. “I,”
“Enough,” Marshal Saxon didn’t want to hear Alex’s belated rebellion. “Don’t bother me with talk about pheromones or mental instability. Lord Elio can also soothe you; it will help promote the relationship between you two. Alex, that is an engagement I fought hard to get for you. Don’t let me be disappointed in you again.”
Disappointment. Again, disappointment.
Alex lowered his head, his dark green eyes staring at the floor in front of his feet. There was a very clear dividing line separating him from the female Zerg, and he suddenly felt it was all so meaningless.
Obediently calling him “Father” or using those cold, official titles was meaningless. Spending every day trying his best to prove himself to someone who didn’t care was meaningless. Others were plotting right to his face, yet he was still worried that fighting back would disappoint his father or his family. That was the height of meaninglessness.
“Just do as I say. When His Majesty arrives, tell him directly that you don’t want to break the engagement. Oh! Lord Elio has arrived. Go quickly and offer him a toast; remember to say something nice.”
Without waiting for Alex’s reaction, the female pushed him toward Elio.
“Good day, Lord Elio,” the female greeted the male who had just entered. Simultaneously, the hand behind Alex’s back applied pressure, a reminder to his clumsy son.
“Good day,” Alex spoke under the silent pressure of Marshal Saxon. His voice was incredibly hoarse. “Lord Elio.”
“Oh, isn’t this my dear fiancé? Long time no see. How have you been lately?”
At this moment, Elio still wore the mask of a “Mr. Nice Guy” in public. Facing Alex’s reluctant greeting, he didn’t get angry; instead, he lowered his head gently to ask about Alex’s well-being. His refined and elegant manner was enough to charm all the surrounding females. At the same time, it made them look even more unfavorably upon Alex, who was still Elio’s fiancé.
“Lord Elio is truly gentle, being able to speak to General Alex with a smile under these circumstances.”
“They still haven’t broken their engagement?”
“General Alex has been accepting Lord Ryan’s pheromones; does Lord Elio still want to marry him?”
“Gods, why do all the good things happen to him alone?”
Whispers rose from the surroundings. Alex lowered his eyelashes, the coldness in his green eyes nearly turning to ice.
It was then that he heard Elio say, “By the way, I’ve heard some interesting rumors about myself lately. I heard that Lord Ryan made a request to His Majesty to be the witness for my marriage to Friedrich?”
In truth, Elio wasn’t angry about Ryan’s suggestion. His ultimate goal was simply to play with an SS-rank female to test their endurance; he didn’t care who that SS-rank female was. But on the surface, he still needed to feign some difficulty.
“However, I am already engaged to Alex. Does Lord Ryan not know about this?”
“He didn’t know at first!” Marshal Saxon immediately spoke up to explain. “But after he made the request, His Majesty and I told him. Of course, Alex is also very much against Lord Ryan’s request. Right, Alex?”
The hand on his back tightened again.
At that moment, Friedrich, who had been talking to others, walked over with a wine glass. He was accompanied by a black-haired male named Philo. Alex had seen him; after Ryan’s first trial, that male had specifically asked Alex to be personally responsible for Ryan’s execution.
So, Friedrich and Philo had been plotting against him and Ryan since then?
As Alex thought this, he bit down on the soft flesh inside his cheek. As the taste of blood spread across his tongue, Philo’s cheerful voice followed.
“Good day, Lord Elio. Do I have the honor of joining your conversation?”
“Of course,” Elio smiled before Alex could speak. “It just so happens that our discussion involves General Friedrich as well.”
Elio looked at Friedrich. “The General likely knows about Lord Ryan’s wish to be our witness. What are your thoughts?”
“It is naturally a great honor for me. However,” Friedrich shifted his tone. “You are, after all, engaged to General Alex. I cannot agree directly over the two of you. His Majesty also said he would first ask for your and Alex’s opinions before considering Lord Ryan’s request. So, General Alex, what are your thoughts on this matter?”
The question had returned to Alex. Just then, an announcement came from the door. The Zerg Emperor had arrived.
“His Majesty is here. Why don’t we speak to him directly?”
At this moment, every Zerg involved in this matter except for Chu Sicheng was present.
“Alex, didn’t you just tell me you had something to say to His Majesty? Speak up!” To his left, his father was urgently prompting him.
“It’s alright; I respect Alex’s choice.” To his right, Elio lightly pushed the problem back onto him.
Even behind him, Philo and Friedrich were secretly watching him, waiting for his answer and their next move. Alex was surrounded by many people, yet for some reason, he felt entirely alone.
Biting his lower lip, Alex moved his lips silently. He wanted to say something, but it was as if his throat were stuffed with cotton; he couldn’t make a single sound.
Sitting on the main throne, the Zerg Emperor frowned. His gaze fell on the female Zerg next to Alex, seemingly wanting him to put more pressure on his son.
However, a commotion suddenly broke out at the door. Less than a minute later, a faint citrus scent arrived. At the same time, a cheerful voice, one that Alex knew all too well, rang out beside him.
“What is all the excitement about? Let me join in too.”
