- Chapter 14 - Sweet Story of a Recomposed Family
“Boss, please get another bottle of drink, thank you.”
Fang Yuqing took the beverage, looking provocatively at Yu She while she unscrewed the cap. She simply couldn’t stand someone trying to curry favor with Chi Xia right in front of her. She was a living, breathing person standing right there was Yu She blind? There was no need for him to look after Chi Xia! They had only met a few times and he already dared to act like this; who knows what kind of lecher he might be behind the scenes. He had looked at her with those lecherous eyes before, and now that he’d seen the more beautiful Chi Xia, he shifted his focus? What a beautiful dream he’d have to ask for her permission first! After all… after all, she was Chi Xia’s friend and sister! Yes, that was it.
When Fang Yuqing saw Yu She’s actions, the feeling in her heart could only be described as complex. It wasn’t an overly excessive gesture; at most, it showed that Yu She was a thoughtful person. Yet, Fang Yuqing felt uncomfortable, as if Yu She was doing something he shouldn’t. It was just unscrewing a bottle cap did he really need to do it? Fang Yuqing could do it too.
She handed or rather, practically shoved the drink toward Chi Xia. Fang Yuqing stared at Chi Xia with a half-smile, radiating an aura that suggested if Chi Xia dared to go against her in front of Yu She, she shouldn’t blame her for losing her temper.
Fang Yuqing said softly, “Xiaxia, you only love this flavor.”
For the first time, Fang Yuqing used a more intimate nickname. There was no teasing tone like when she called her “Chi Junior,” nor the irony used when calling her “Sister.” At this moment, “Xiaxia” carried a lingering, affectionate sentiment that almost made Chi Xia lose her focus.
The drink in her hand was icy cold. The heat from Chi Xia’s palm caused condensation to drip from the bottle, landing on her off-white midi skirt and blooming into a water stain. It was like Chi Xia’s ice-encased heart beginning to shed crystal droplets a sign that its core was undergoing a meltdown.
Chi Xia’s ink-black eyes seemed to ripple with a soft light. Her lips curved slightly as she lowered her head and replied, “Yes, I love drinking this one.”
Hearing this, Fang Yuqing smiled very sweetly, gazing at Chi Xia with secret delight. She was surprised by Chi Xia’s cooperation this time. She leaned in and intimately bumped her shoulder against Chi Xia’s, whispering, “Hehe, as long as you like it.”
While speaking, Fang Yuqing’s eyes refused to look away. She never imagined a compliant Chi Xia would look like this. The charming sight of Chi Xia lowering her head with a faint smile made Fang Yuqing’s heart itch with the desire to reach out and touch that smooth black hair, curious if she would show an even more “obedient” side next.
Over the years, they had always been at each other’s throats. This rare moment of cooperation actually caused a spark of sweetness to bloom in Fang Yuqing’s heart; she figured she should probably thank Yu She for this.
Meanwhile, the other bottle that Yu She had unscrewed sat there like a lonely orphan. It was Yu Rao who couldn’t stand Yu She’s embarrassment; she reached out, took the bottle, and took a large gulp to liven up the atmosphere again. “Yuqing, you really kept this a secret. I never heard you mention that you knew Manager Chi.”
Fang Yuqing decided to come clean. Anyway, Yu She already knew about her and Chi Xia, and their relationship wasn’t something shameful, so there was nothing to hide.
Yu Rao nodded understandingly, looking back and forth between Chi Xia and Fang Yuqing. “So, that means Manager Chi is your sister in name now? And the three of you were high school classmates?”
Fang Yuqing ate her food. “That’s exactly how it is.”
“Haha, then the fate between the three of you is quite deep. And you’re all such handsome men and beautiful women.” Yu Rao tossed a lead-in to Yu She. He wasn’t stupid; although he was still wondering why these three women had been staring at him strangely earlier, now was not the time to play dumb. Yu She mocked himself, “Being handsome is useless; I’ve been single for many years.”
His original intent was to let Fang Yuqing know he was single and hadn’t been casually dating just because of his family background he was looking for a partner for life.
But to Fang Yuqing, who already viewed him as having ulterior motives, alarm bells rang instantly. Under the guise of picking up food for Chi Xia, she checked Chi Xia’s expression, only to find Chi Xia holding her cup with both hands, sipping her drink while watching her.
This sudden turn of the head was beyond Chi Xia’s expectation, and it caused Fang Yuqing to become uncharacteristically bashful.
“You… why are you just drinking instead of eating?”
Chi Xia pursed her lips. Following Fang Yuqing’s question, she silently withdrew her gaze, staring straight ahead and saying seriously, “Not very hungry. Just thirsty.”
Her fingers unconsciously stroked the disposable cup. Chi Xia had poured the drink into the cup; the chilled bottle sat nearby, visible at a glance as was the eyesore, Yu She.
Chi Xia’s eyes were sharp, their depths seemingly containing ice shards and a frosty chill. She curled the corner of her mouth.
Yu She couldn’t help but scratch his head. When had he provoked Chi Xia? Speaking of which, he and Chi Xia did have some history, but he hadn’t taken that matter to heart. Now that she was Fang Yuqing’s sister, he would care even less. So what was with that look? That kind of pressure didn’t seem like it came from a woman at all.
Wait, could it be that she noticed his feelings for Fang Yuqing? If so, her gaze was easy to understand. When the family’s “cabbage” is about to be arched by a pig, the family is bound to be angry.
Uh, I’m not exactly a pig, am I?
Thinking he had figured it all out, Yu She felt he was a head shorter than Chi Xia. After all, his little scheme had been detected by Fang Yuqing’s family; how could he stand tall now?
In short, the signal he sent out was misunderstood by Chi Xia in a specific way, while the intended target, Fang Yuqing, foolishly misinterpreted it as well. Strictly speaking, Yu She was quite tragic just a little bit.
He gave a placating smile, which Fang Yuqing happened to see.
Suddenly, Fang Yuqing covered her mouth with an “Ouch!” Chi Xia frowned in concern. “What happened?”
“Wuwu, I bit my tongue.” Fang Yuqing was fuming inwardly. It was bad enough Yu She was annoying her, but she was so useless she bit her own tongue. It hurt like hell!
Chi Xia laughed helplessly. “Craving meat that badly?”
“No way!” Fang Yuqing rolled her eyes at Chi Xia. What gives? Her mother used to say that to her all the time. She didn’t expect to hear it now. Was Chi Xia treating her like a child?
Seeing her pained expression as if she wanted to wrinkle her face into a ball, Chi Xia decided to lean in close to Fang Yuqing. Her fingers pinched Yuqing’s chin as she whispered, “Tilt your head up and open your mouth so I can see. Don’t let those teeth of yours wound your tongue; they can be quite fierce.”
Only the two of them understood the deeper meaning behind those words. Fang Yuqing was probably in too much pain to even offer a rebuttal. She obediently followed Chi Xia’s instructions, but her eyes couldn’t help but linger on Chi Xia’s face.
The other woman’s eyes were pitch black and devoid of laughter, her brow currently furrowed. This made Fang Yuqing sigh inwardly: How can someone look so good even while frowning?
Her red lips parted slightly, tremblingly revealing the tip of her tongue. Chi Xia rubbed Fang Yuqing’s jaw with her thumb and said, “That’s a nasty bite. We need to go to the hospital.”
“What? It’s that serious?” Yu Rao wanted to lean over to look out of concern, but Chi Xia had already released her grip and let Fang Yuqing close her mouth. Her hand moved from the chin to rest lazily across Fang Yuqing’s shoulder. Chi Xia looked up and said, “Sorry, I have to take her to the hospital.”
Yu She was clearly worried about Fang Yuqing’s injury as well. He stood up and said, “The hospital is too much trouble. I’ll take you to see my private doctor.”
As soon as he said this, two voices rang out in unison.
“Unnecessary.”
“No need!”
Chi Xia and Fang Yuqing glanced at each other, both seeing the surprise in the other’s eyes.
Yu She pursed his lips, feeling a wave of frustration. Is the sister-in-law guarding her this strictly? He can’t even send her to a private doctor?
Chi Xia stood up, intending to leave. But seeing Fang Yuqing staring at Yu She, her face darkened instantly. She grabbed Fang Yuqing’s wrist and said in a low voice, “Come with me.”
Fang Yuqing wasn’t afraid of her cold face. Her hand shifted, changing the grip to hug Chi Xia’s arm. She gave an apologetic smile and waved goodbye to Yu Rao.
Chi Xia said indifferently, “This is sudden, so we have to leave first. I’ll host a dinner for the two of you next time we have the chance.”
Yu Rao couldn’t help but shudder. It was because Chi Xia had swept a glance over her before leaving. Feeling a sense of lingering fear, Yu Rao patted her chest and took a quiet breath.
Yu She didn’t have time to say anything to Yu Rao before he chased after the two, leaving Yu Rao staring at their receding backs.
“Boss, the bill please.”
“Eh? Bill? That friend who arrived later already paid.”
Yu Rao shrugged her shoulders and sat back down to continue eating. She wasn’t full yet; she had been too busy watching the drama. Those three each had their own hidden agendas it couldn’t have been more entertaining, especially seeing Yu She suffer a setback. She was quite happy about it.
Gloating to herself, Yu Rao murmured, “Don’t they know the saying about a mouse meeting a cat?”
“Fang Yuqing, Chi Xia!” Yu She ran to catch up with them.
Chi Xia looked at Yu She blocking their path and said directly, “Is there a problem?”
Yu She pointed to his car nearby. “I’ll drive you.”
“I have a car. No need to trouble President Yu.”
Yu She didn’t want to miss this chance to show off his capability. He tapped his watch and said, “It’s too late now. Going to the hospital isn’t as good as seeing my private doctor.”
Fang Yuqing was speechless. She really wanted to open Yu She’s head to see what was inside. When she saw him at the company before, he seemed to have a handle on things, but why did he lose his mind as soon as he saw a beautiful woman?
“President Yu, it’s really no trouble. As the saying goes, ‘excessive courtesy masks hidden motives.’ You’re being too enthusiastic, and it makes me uncomfortable. Do you understand? There should be boundaries and a sense of distance between strangers. Clearly, our relationship hasn’t reached the level where I’d trouble you.” Fang Yuqing endured the pain to argue with him. Chi Xia pulled her hand to keep walking, not wanting to waste more words on Yu She.
“I’m not being ‘excessively courteous.’ I’m just trying to pursue the person I like. Is there something wrong with that?” Yu She’s face darkened. Even if he had Fang Yuqing’s contact info, hadn’t he been blacklisted? Yu She had wanted to ask about that for a long time, but how could he bring it up? Asking would just be embarrassing. But would he give up? Impossible. That’s why he arranged for his sister to enter the company, hoping Yu Rao would act as an internal contact. But hearing Fang Yuqing’s blatant rejection now, he felt he had lost face and couldn’t help blurting out his true feelings.
At that moment, a string snapped in Fang Yuqing’s mind. The man’s sudden confession made her speak without thinking. She said, “She can’t accept you. She… she likes women!”
“And… and she has a ‘White Moonlight’ who passed away early. That woman is forever in her heart. Every girlfriend she’s had since looks a bit like that White Moonlight. Someone like you, who has nothing in common with her White Moonlight, has no chance!”
Fang Yuqing advised him with a serious and earnest tone, “This is a tragic love story. You’re the wrong gender; I’m afraid you can’t even be a body double.”
She boldly talked nonsense right in front of Chi Xia with a serious face and sincere expression. Even Chi Xia almost believed she actually had a “White Moonlight.”
Chi Xia hooked her arm around Yuqing’s shoulder, pulling her closer. Her lips curled into an arrogant smile as she said, “Sorry, she likes women too. And one more thing… my ‘White Moonlight’ isn’t dead. She just has amnesia and mistook the protagonist of the story for someone else.”
Chi Xia lowered her head and used the back of her hand to lift Fang Yuqing’s chin, forcing her to look up. She asked, “Isn’t that right?”
After hearing all of this, Yu She’s pupils dilated in shock. He couldn’t say a word for a long time.
Are you two filming a mystery romance drama?
Look at the male lead, his face is turning pale from the shock!
One dares to say it, the other dares to make it up. You two are truly something. Here, take the pen if you don’t write a whole script tonight, don’t even think about sleeping!
