- Chapter 13 - Sweet Tale of a Recomposed Family
The summer wind carried a parching heat that made one’s cheeks flush. The nights were better, offering a hint of coolness, which was exactly why the summer night markets were always so bustling.
Fang Yuqing was not a local. She didn’t truly know which spots on this lively street held the real culinary gems, so she followed Yu Rao, her eyes busily scanning her surroundings.
Yu Rao said with a smile, “You look like you’re here for the first time.”
She was wearing a breezy long dress and comfortable canvas shoes. Pure and beautiful, she looked like a white magnolia quiet and lovely.
Fang Yuqing shrugged her shoulders to avoid bumping into passersby. “I’m not a local, after all. I only attended high school here.”
Yu Rao was already aware of this and wasn’t surprised by the explanation. She pointed to a small restaurant not far away. “That’s the eatery I’ve eaten at since I was a kid. Don’t look down on it because it’s small; the boss’s cooking is excellent, and the prices are cheap. Come to think of it, I haven’t eaten there in a long time.”
Eating there was a thing of the past when she had no money. Now, Yu Rao’s status had changed. She and Yu She were “grasshoppers on the same rope”; since Yu She had become the heir, Yu Rao naturally didn’t lack money. Consequently, she rarely visited these “fly-in-the-wall” roadside joints anymore.
“You won’t mind this kind of small restaurant, will you?” Yu Rao asked subconsciously.
Fang Yuqing laughed. “As long as it’s clean and hygienic, it’s fine. Why would I mind something like that?”
Yu Rao looked her up and down, teasing, “With your appearance, figure, and temperament, you don’t look like someone who would come here to eat.”
“Please, does eating have to be divided into social classes? As long as it’s delicious, it’s fine. Let’s go in quickly. I went home to change and came right back out; I haven’t even had a sip of water. I’m hungry and thirsty.” Fang Yuqing felt the remark was a bit grating, but then told herself she was overthinking it.
She pushed open the door first. Business was good inside, and it was nearly full. Fortunately, as soon as they arrived, a table was leaving. Fang Yuqing hurried to sit down, afraid someone behind her would be faster. She didn’t want to be steamed by the heat outside; sitting in the air conditioning was true happiness.
Neither of them suffered from “choice paralysis,” and they quickly ordered their stir-fried dishes. After Fang Yuqing took a sip of an ice-cold drink, she laughed cheerfully, looking like a honey peach brushed with dew exuding a sweet fragrance that made everyone like her.
Pressing the bottle against her cheek, she said, “I’ve finally come back to life.”
Yu Rao was amused by her childish side. “I told you to ride a bike over, but you didn’t want to. Now you know how hot it is.”
“There are so many people at the night market; riding a bike would just get you stuck.” Fang Yuqing lowered her eyes to look at her dress and pursed her lips in defeat. Besides, she was wearing a dress how could she ride a bike?
Fang Yuqing had an easy-going personality, bright and full of vitality. Yu Rao, who was intentionally approaching her with a motive, naturally said things Fang Yuqing liked to hear. Although she was also a new hire, as President Chang’s assistant, she knew far more than Fang Yuqing.
Fang Yuqing silently poured a glass of water for Yu Rao. She remembered Yu Rao mentioning her period had started, so she shouldn’t drink cold things. The water wasn’t hot, and under the air conditioning, it quickly became room-temperature water.
Yu Rao noticed her small gesture and blinked her sultry eyes at her. “Are you like this to everyone?”
Fang Yuqing asked in confusion, “Everyone? My friends aren’t spread across the whole world; how could I be like this to everyone?”
Yu Rao flashed a charming smile, picked up the glass to moisten her throat, and said meaningfully, “Being this well-behaved… be careful not to be snatched away by a wolf.”
Fang Yuqing tilted her head, her expression puzzled.
Yu Rao waved her hand. “Nothing.”
Amidst their conversation, the food was quickly served. Looking at the dishes, Fang Yuqing said, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. I just don’t know if there’s room for one more.”
The man’s voice was deep and magnetic. Fang Yuqing’s heart skipped a beat because the voice didn’t sound like a stranger’s.
Yu Rao solved the mystery for the still-bowed Fang Yuqing, calling out, “President Yu, why are you here?”
She feigned a look of shock at Yu She, but her eyes were fixed on Fang Yuqing, wanting to see her reaction. However, Fang Yuqing was very calm, which made both Yu She and Yu Rao feel a bit frustrated.
Yu Rao frowned slightly. One should know that Yu She was the heir to a listed group; shouldn’t meeting him here be a shock? Why was Fang Yuqing so composed, as if Yu She’s status was just that of an ordinary citizen?
Yu She’s gaze remained fixed on Fang Yuqing. “I used to come to this shop often in high school. Today, for some reason, I really wanted to eat their food, so I drove over. I didn’t expect to see you two.”
“Miss Fang, what a coincidence.”
Fang Yuqing gave a distant smile. Though the corners of her mouth were upturned, she maintained an attitude of not wanting to talk much. She said, “Good evening, President Yu.”
Yu She sat down uninvited, directly opposite Fang Yuqing and beside Yu Rao. He crossed his hands under his chin and said with a smile, “There is no ‘President Yu’ during off-hours. Just call me Yu She.”
She smiled silently. Not wanting the atmosphere to grow cold, Yu Rao enthusiastically picked up the conversation. “In that case, I won’t be formal. Yu She, what do you want to eat? It’s my treat today.”
“Then I shall accept the offer.” He looked toward Fang Yuqing, and not discouraged by her cold smile, he looked down at the menu.
The man wore custom-tailored clothes. His gold-rimmed glasses blended with the sharpness between his brows, adding a touch of elegance. His extraordinary appearance drew gazes from the moment he entered the shop. It could be said that this table had become the most popular spot in the restaurant.
Yu Rao made eyes at Fang Yuqing; her behavior made it seem like there was some sort of relationship between Yu She and Fang Yuqing.
But Fang Yuqing failed to receive the hint because Yu Rao’s “assist” was interrupted by a phone call.
Fang Yuqing’s eyes lit up with brilliance. She looked spirited, like a painted beauty that had just been given eyes she was no longer just beautiful on paper but was filled with soul and charm.
Fang Yuqing’s voice instantly spiked in sweetness as she said, “How did you think to call today?”
Hearing the background noise, the other party knew she was out. Chi Xia asked calmly, “Where are you? I didn’t see you when I got home.”
Chi Xia’s answer somehow gave Fang Yuqing the feeling that she was very important. Fang Yuqing lowered her head and said softly, “I’m eating at the night market with a colleague.”
“Can I come over?”
Fang Yuqing naturally hoped Chi Xia would come, but this wasn’t her private dinner. Fang Yuqing looked at Yu Rao and was about to speak when Yu She asked, “Is your friend coming?”
The man’s voice was abrupt, and it sounded grating to Chi Xia. She was used to Fang Yuqing’s voice; having a male voice suddenly pop up made her thoroughly displeased.
Chi Xia’s voice turned cold. “Is Yu She there too?”
Fang Yuqing blinked, keenly sensing the change in Chi Xia. “Chi Xia, are you angry?”
“No.” She was indifferent, but her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
The moment her name was mentioned, Yu She gave Yu Rao a look. Yu Rao acted surprised and covered her mouth. “Chi Xia? Yuqing, you two actually have each other’s contact info? Does she want to come see you? I was wondering why you were looking at me just now. Oh, no need to ask my opinion! Your friend is my friend. It’s nice for everyone to get together.”
After speaking, she nudged Yu She with her elbow.
What are you doing, letting Chi Xia come? Are you trying to get four people for a mahjong game?
Don’t worry about it, I have a plan.
Yu Rao rolled her eyes imperceptibly. Since Fang Yuqing’s heart was entirely on the phone, she didn’t notice the silent exchange between the two.
Fang Yuqing breathed a sigh of relief. If they hadn’t agreed, she would have had to leave early to see Chi Xia. “I’ll send you the address. Be careful on the road. Waiting for you!”
Chi Xia increased her speed. The wind rushed through the car window, blowing past her hair. Her fluttering strands looked elegant and unrestrained. Her face was expressionless, so cold she seemed coated in a layer of frost.
She finally had something she wanted to say to Fang Yuqing, and yet Yu She was there. How eyesore-inducing.
She couldn’t help but speed up again, the car flying down the road.
Xia Xia, why are you driving so fast? Fang Yuqing won’t run away. You should pay attention to safety.
“I know what I’m doing.”
You know what you’re doing?
I think you’re just not quite right!
Chi Xia curled her lips into a faint smile. “I’m perfectly ‘right’.”
She knew that better than anyone.
The car couldn’t enter the night market street, so she found a random parking spot. Chi Xia glanced at the surrounding night scenery. She walked against the summer breeze to find that small restaurant, her long, slightly curly black hair swaying gently against her waist.
“Hello, what would you like to eat?” The owner looked at Chi Xia in awe. She replied, “I’m looking for someone, thank you.”
The speed of Chi Xia’s arrival exceeded Fang Yuqing’s imagination. She suddenly stood up, looking at the woman before her. She said joyfully, “I was worried you’d get lost.”
Chi Xia glanced at Fang Yuqing. “I am not a certain ‘Fang’ person.”
“Hmph, looking down on people.”
Yu Rao observed Chi Xia. At this moment, she seemed much softer than she had in the morning. Whether it was because she had seen Fang Yuqing or because she was wearing light colors today, Chi Xia seemed different.
“Hello everyone, I am Chi Xia.”
Yu She scrutinized Fang Yuqing, noting how much she cared about Chi Xia, which further confirmed his plan.
He pushed up his glasses and proactively twisted open a bottle of drink for Chi Xia, displaying his gentlemanly side.
Soon, Yu She’s smile froze on his face because all three women were looking at him. Their eyes seemed to be filled with the word “disdain.”
Chi Xia: I have hands, thank you.
Fang Yuqing: You think you’re the one who gets to twist open Chi Little-Two’s bottle?
Yu Rao: Are you stupid? Fang Yuqing is sitting right there, and instead of taking care of her, you take care of Chi Xia! Don’t tell people you’re my brother, it’s embarrassing.
He said sheepishly, “W… what’s wrong?”
I didn’t poison it! Why is everyone looking at me?
Trying to please the sister of my future girlfriend that is, my future sister-in-law there’s nothing wrong with that!
