- Chapter 73.4 - From Now On, Yi Jing and Yu Miao Are Both Free
The second voice was achingly familiar, pleading pitifully, “Don’t you think she’s adorable? Let’s raise her as our own. I don’t want to give birth myself, and artificial incubation technology isn’t reliable yet what if we end up with a dumb kid?”
After a brief silence, the first woman seemed to relent without much resistance: “Fine, we’ll keep her. From now on, she’s our child.”
And so Yi Jing understood, these were her aunt and auntie in their younger days.
But how could she be hearing this? And what were those visions she’d just seen? If she remembered correctly, there was no “Yi Jing” character in the original story. She’d assumed she was just an insignificant NPC. Could she actually be a glitch? Someone who was never meant to exist?
As these thoughts swirled, the sensation of having a physical form grew stronger, Yi Jing had truly become a child!
How does one who shouldn’t exist fill in twenty-plus missing years of life? Was she really expected to relive every moment of that person’s experiences?
Yi Jing was baffled. Yi Jing found this absurd. Yet Yi Jing had no means of escaping this situation.
It was like an endless dream where Yi Jing lived through an alternate lifetime, personally experiencing those bygone days.
This finally explained why, at every difficult juncture, so many friends had miraculously appeared to help her at critical moments. It turned out there had been another version of herself one who knew all the answers, meticulously laying preparations step by step before everything began. Every arrangement had been her own doing.
Yi Jing repeatedly recalled future events, carefully plotting each detail. Having little in common with peers, she gradually became the composed, serious law student others described when she first transmigrated into the novel, aloof yet brilliant, sweeping awards, with boundless prospects. The only thing that might trouble her elders was her stubborn refusal to heed her aunt’s advice, insisting on sabotaging her future by accepting Old Master Yi’s invitation to return to the Yi family after graduation.
Truthfully, Yi Jing had no desire to rejoin the Yi family either. Returning meant endless troubles, daily dealings with scoundrels, exhausting mental gymnastics, it was all more than she could bear.
Yet there was one person she had to see, even if it meant facing eternal damnation she had to return to see her one last time.
The past twenty-plus years of her life flashed before her eyes. Yi Jing had done everything within her power, but her greatest regret was never being able to find Yu Miao during all those years. God only knew how desperately Yi Jing had wanted to find that sixteen-year-old girl hiding in a leaky basement and bring her home to care for her. Yet no matter how hard she tried, Yu Miao remained elusive, as if she didn’t exist in this world at all.
Perhaps this world had its own narrative lock, preventing anything that might disrupt the logical chain. If so, the only way to see Yu Miao again was to recreate their first meeting at the banquet the Yi family had held in her honor.
Filled with anticipation, Yi Jing waited for that day. Following her memories, she entered the rarely used room in the Yi family estate, placed the pre-registered security ID card on the bedside table, and prepared to collapse into sleep.
Once she woke up, she would see Yu Miao again, wouldn’t she?
Yi Jing lay down happily, stealing one last glance at herself in the mirror before closing her eyes, she looked exactly the same as she had on the first day she transmigrated here.
She shut her eyes, only to open them again moments later.
But this time, instead of the intricate star-patterned ceiling of her bedroom, she saw only pure white. Her body felt inexplicably weak, as if her life force had been drained, leaving her on the brink of death. The faint beeping of medical equipment echoed in her ears, and each labored breath reverberated heavily in her chest.
It was then that she heard someone nearby exclaim, “The officer is awake!” “Officer Yi is awake!”
Yi Jing’s first reaction was confusion what were they talking about? It took her a long moment to bridge the gap of twenty years and remember in the original timeline, hadn’t she been attacked and nearly killed?
Had she been saved?
She turned her head slightly and caught her reflection in the gleam of the medical equipment her face was much thinner, the sharp lines of her cheekbones more pronounced. Sickness clung to her brow, dimming even the light in her eyes, she looked utterly wretched.
At least she had survived. Otherwise, what would have become of Yu Miao?
Exhausted, Yi Jing blinked slowly, cooperating with the nervous doctors who rushed in to run a series of tests. The moment they finished, she demanded to see Yu Miao.
The doctor hesitated, but Yi Jing lacked the strength to argue. In frustration, she coughed up blood, startling the doctor into immediate compliance, no one dared risk losing the officer under their care.
Half a day later, with help from all sides, Yu Miao finally arrived outside Yi Jing’s hospital room. Since Yi Jing was still in critical condition, Yu Miao couldn’t enter they could only see each other through the glass.
Only when they finally met did Yi Jing realize she wasn’t the only one who had wasted away. Yu Miao, too, had grown gaunt and fragile, her spirit visibly worn. Worried, Yi Jing instinctively tried to sit up, only for Yu Miao to urgently motion for her to stay still.
The two gazed at each other in silence for a long moment. Yi Jing smiled painfully, raising her left hand to touch the base of her ring finger, where their couple’s rings should have been. Due to being detained and then hospitalized, Yi Jing’s ring had long been confiscated, but Yu Miao’s still remained on her finger. Seeing Yi Jing’s gesture, Yu Miao immediately reached up to grasp her own ring.
Yi Jing then mouthed something weakly, repeating the phrase several times: “Gift, first one.” while making a gun gesture with her right hand.
Yu Miao watched Yi Jing’s movements and gradually understood. Yi Jing was reminding her of the gifts she’d given the ring, the service pistol, the car keys. The first gift? That would be, a case of medicine? Why was Yi Jing bringing this up now?
Mimicking Yi Jing’s words, Yu Miao saw the frail woman nod before pointing to her own left middle finger. Suddenly, Yu Miao realized, Yi Jing must have hidden something for her to find.
Through the glass, Yu Miao silently mouthed “Find?” Yi Jing exhaled in relief, smiling faintly as she nodded. Yu Miao also relaxed, nodding to show she understood.
With the important message conveyed, they simply gazed at each other through the window. Yi Jing lacked the strength to speak, while Yu Miao had too much to say without knowing where to begin. They remained like that until a nurse interrupted, announcing visiting hours were over and Yi Jing needed rest.
Seeing Yu Miao prepare to leave, Yi Jing instinctively tried to sit up, only to be immediately restrained by doctors who exclaimed, “Officer, please don’t move! Your wounds haven’t healed, you’re only pain-free because of morphine! Any sudden movements could cause internal bleeding again!”
Yi Jing heard but felt little pain, stubbornly keeping her eyes on Yu Miao. Yu Miao hesitated the room was too crowded, but pressing her fingers to her lips, she blew a kiss against the glass separating them.
The distant gesture caught Yi Jing off guard, softening her heart. Though their lips never touched, Yi Jing felt the warmth of Yu Miao’s affection as clearly as any physical contact. Decades of loneliness and resentment dissolved as the weakened woman melted into compliance, smiling brightly before collapsing back onto the bed and forming a heart shape with her hands.
Seeing Yi Jing’s mood lift, Yu Miao smiled in return, casting one last longing glance before following the nurse out.
In the hallway, Hubert and Qi Xiao waited anxiously, their bickering ceasing the moment Yu Miao emerged. “How is she?” they asked urgently. “Is she alert? Did she say anything?”
Yu Miao glanced at the two people and nodded. “Still very weak, but given her injuries, this is already quite good. As for other matters, she did mention something, but it’s not yet confirmed. I’d like to go check first.”
Hearing this, Hubert looked surprised. He frowned in thought, then glanced at Qi Xiao beside him. “Let us know if you need any help.”
Yu Miao considered it, there might indeed be something they could assist with.
Yi Jing had mentioned the first gift he gave her several times. It couldn’t possibly be the box of medicine itself those had long been used up, leaving only the empty box at home. If there had been any issues, she would have noticed by now.
Still, it wouldn’t hurt to check the box just in case.
But Yu Miao suspected this “first gift” might hint at something else, perhaps something hidden?
Medicine, medicine. Given Yi Jing’s position, even if he had access to certain chemical compounds developed, used, or confiscated by the Inspection Bureau, he wouldn’t have been able to take them out so casually. The way he’d handed them to her back then suggested he must have had a regular stockpile.
The most likely source was the Yi family estate. Now that the estate was sealed off, she would indeed need Hubert and Qi Xiao’s help to get inside.
Two nights later, after thorough preparation, Yu Miao quietly infiltrated the Yi family estate.
The place had been locked down for a long time, with no one entering since the Organization’s explosives had torn through it before the blockade. Yu Miao wasn’t even sure if what Yi Jing wanted her to find was still there.
Fortunately, she knew where Yi Jing had lived before moving in with her, a slightly secluded spot that had so far escaped both the explosions and recent investigations.
Slipping into Yi Jing’s former residence, Yu Miao marveled at how meticulously Old Master Yi had arranged everything to win Yi Jing over. She searched the suite carefully until, deep in the walk-in closet, she happened to pull on one of the sliding doors, revealing a hidden room.
Inside stood what looked like a massive refrigerated cabinet, likely once used to store various medicines. But with the power cut, the refrigeration had failed, and many of the compounds appeared inactive now. Donning a mask, Yu Miao stepped inside, using a small flashlight to inspect the contents. After some searching, she found a palm-sized notebook.
The handwriting was unmistakably Yi Jing’s, but the contents, just names? Each entry listed the person’s current position, how Yi Jing knew them, and contact details. Was his terminal’s contact list not enough?
Puzzled, Yu Miao scrutinized the names and details more closely, then noticed something odd.
Since getting together, the two had rarely kept secrets from each other. Yu Miao was familiar with most names in Yi Jing’s contacts, yet many listed here were absent. Some, judging by their positions, should have been Mahira’s trusted aides. In that moment, realization dawned.
Perhaps, this was Yi Jing’s final contingency plan?
But did the young alpha really possess such meticulous thinking? In a moment of distraction during his contemplation, a flicker of doubt crossed Yu Miao’s mind. He recalled Yi Jing’s demeanor during their first meeting that carefree, somewhat silly expression, appearing like a naïve student who was easy to deceive. It hardly seemed like someone scheming to overthrow his own family.
Was this really prepared by the young alpha?
Yu Miao felt somewhat puzzled, sensing that something wasn’t quite right, but ultimately didn’t doubt Yi Jing’s capabilities. Staring at the names in the notebook for a while, she suddenly remembered that during their meeting, Yi Jing had twice touched the spot where their couple’s ring used to be.
Could it be? Yu Miao pondered for a moment before taking out her personal terminal. She inputted one of the contact methods from the notebook and tentatively sent the Latin phrase engraved inside their couple’s ring: “Te semper eligam.” Even if she guessed wrong, it wouldn’t matter at worst, the recipient might think she was crazy or that it was harassment.
Before long, that seemingly romantic message actually received a reply.
[Ayn insanolumu semek gibi]
“I will always choose you, just as I choose my humanity.” These were the exact words Yi Jing had said when giving her the ring!
This confirmed it. That day on the beach had been completely quiet, with no one else around. There was no way a third person could know what Yi Jing had told her.
Unless, this phrase was their code. These were the people Yi Jing had prepared in advance her final contingency plan!
Though the thought that Yi Jing hadn’t genuinely given her the ring stung slightly, Yu Miao quickly refocused.
Right now, the Yi family was resisting with all their might, desperately delaying the investigation. With this list, they now had both the manpower and information advantage. The Yi family wouldn’t stand a chance!
A new message soon arrived: [Time to act? I’m fully prepared.]
Just as expected!
With the code confirmed, the next step was to move. This time, the Yi family wouldn’t escape through underhanded means!
Meanwhile, Yi Jing, who had happily handed over all the trump cards she’d accumulated over twenty years the moment she regained consciousness, lay in the critical care unit of Fantasy City Medical Center, which doubled as a detention facility. Enduring the pain, she distractedly counted sheep to pass the time, amusing herself by guessing how long it would take Yu Miao to completely dismantle the Yi family.
It was all coming to an end. Her sister would come to take her away.
Yi Jing spent several months recuperating at Fantasy City Medical Center until she fully recovered, then was transferred to a detention facility in District 13. By this point, however, the Yi family case was practically resolved most culprits had been arrested, and the innocent had been released.
The number of witnesses testifying to Yi Jing’s contributions during the Jing’shan City investigation far outweighed those accusing her of misconduct so much so that higher-ups privately wondered whether the investigation into the Yi family had been their idea or Yi Jing’s all along.
Still, procedures had to be followed. After lengthy investigations, the main conspirators in the Yi family case were all sentenced to death, while other severe offenders received suspended death sentences or life imprisonment. Accomplices received sentences proportionate to their crimes.
After eight months of detention including her recovery period, Yi Jing was finally released.
From that moment on, the Yi family ceased to exist in Jing’shan City. The long-standing feud had finally ended, and both Yi Jing and Yu Miao were free at last.
