- Chapter 73.3 - From Now On, Yi Jing and Yu Miao Are Both Free
Yu Miao stepped out of the secret control room and located the ship’s main power switch, cutting off the electricity supply with a single motion—from now on, they would play an endless game with no chance to restart. The only way to reach the end was to confess their crimes. Those unwilling would be trapped in an endless cycle of scheming and slaughter with her, the ‘Butcher,’ and the other players.
As she thought this, she loaded one chemical syringe after another into the thigh holster.
If it had been up to her original plan, she might have chosen to detonate the cruise ship and sink into the sea with these enemies. But now, Yi Jing existed and Yu Miao couldn’t help but cling to the hope of seeing him again, of being with him once more. For that, she could endure the disgust of sparing these people’s lives.
Moving swiftly through the darkened ship, now her domain, given her familiarity with its layout, Yu Miao considered the only complication: Yi Xuan, who might also know the vessel well.
Perhaps Yi Xuan had already guessed something was wrong, but it didn’t matter. Yu Miao could deal with the others first and handle the Yi family later.
She had long since memorized every corner of the ship. First, she quietly took down a pair of Lei cousins who had unexpectedly crossed paths, injecting them with truth serum from behind and forcing them to confess their past misdeeds on camera using the blackmail she had prepared.
Leaving the babbling sisters behind, she slipped from the deck into the cigar lounge, where she swiftly subdued Xie Chongming with a single needle as he rummaged for weapons. The noise of his collapse, however, drew footsteps. Yu Miao kicked Xie Chongming into a corner and melted back into the shadows of the deck.
Then, the control module in her pocket suddenly flashed a red alarm, the kind triggered only when locked onto by military radar. Even Yi Mian, with all her influence, wouldn’t normally warrant such a response. What was happening now?
Was borrowing a ship supposed to cause this much commotion?
Panic wasn’t limited to Yu Miao. The “guests” in the cabins also stirred as light flooded in, not from restored power, but from the searchlights of armed helicopters now trained on the vessel.
Dozens of beams pierced through the rain, illuminating the lonely ship adrift on the sea. Yi Jing, his brow furrowed, unbuckled his seatbelt with one hand and snapped, “I said I’d go down first to secure the ship’s access!”
An armed police officer, gripping his rifle, eyed Yi Jing with suspicion. “Why are you so concerned about the people on that ship?”
“There’s a key witness and suspects for this operation onboard!” Yi Jing shot back coldly, unwavering. “Are you interfering with official investigation procedures?”
The officer frowned and looked away, signaling to his comrade instead. “Lower the rope ladder.”
As the ladder unfurled and the helicopter tilted toward the yacht, Yi Jing suddenly spotted something on the deck. Without hesitation, he abandoned his seatbelt, grabbed the ladder, and leaped down.
“Hey! Hey!” Hubert was so startled that he rushed to the cabin door to shout at Yi Jing, but it was too late. Hubert watched helplessly as Yi Jing recklessly jumped from the rope ladder when its end was still three to four meters above the yacht’s deck.
With no other choice, Hubert sighed in resignation and climbed down after her.
Yi Jing, who had jumped earlier, rolled on the deck to disperse the impact before springing up and dashing toward a corner obscured by the ship’s cabin. Her movements were decisive, her gaze unwavering, as she immediately embraced the woman who was equally drenched by the heavy rain.
“Jing Jing?” Yu Miao’s lips were tinged blue from the cold as she looked up at Yi Jing in shock and disarray.
When she first spotted the armed helicopter, Yu Miao had already given up hope, convinced that fate had denied her the chance to exact revenge. Yet the first person she saw was Yi Jing leaping from the rope ladder. Her voice trembled slightly as she asked, “What are you doing here?”
The rain was relentless, leaving Yu Miao’s body chilled to the bone.
Yi Jing’s heart ached, but now wasn’t the time for explanations. She could only grip Yu Miao’s arm tightly and give her a deep look. “You need to leave first. I’ll find you later.”
“What?” Yu Miao froze. “Where are you going? What are you planning? Whose helicopter is that? The markings, aren’t those used by the armed police? Why are they here?”
Yu Miao had countless questions, but Yi Jing didn’t have time to answer them all.
Hubert, who had followed Yi Jing down, had already reached them and urged in a low, urgent voice, “Still dawdling? There’s no time for heartfelt confessions now.”
Hearing this, Yi Jing’s hesitation vanished. She grasped Yu Miao’s hand and said, “Sister, you have to leave here safely for my sake.”
“What?” Yu Miao stiffened, gripping Yi Jing’s hand even tighter, unwilling to let go.
“It’s alright, sister,” Yi Jing smiled. Her long lashes were soaked and clumped together, her dripping hair clinging to her cheeks, making her look soft and vulnerable far more docile than usual. But her words were anything but. “I actually needed an opportunity like this. Let me be the one to escalate this situation.”
“I…” Yu Miao was at a loss for words. What had originally been her own carefully planned revenge had somehow shifted entirely onto Yi Jing’s shoulders.
Hubert, standing to the side, finally lost patience. He pulled the slender Yu Miao into his arms, muttering, “Alright, alright, no more delays,” before activating his comms earpiece to report to the armed police: “We’ve located one of the hostages!”
“Jing Jing, Jing Jing!” For some reason, Yu Miao was suddenly overcome with a terrible premonition. She instinctively reached out to grab Yi Jing, but Hubert’s grip was unyielding, how could a retired inspector still be so strong after all these years?
Yi Jing heard Yu Miao’s voice and turned back to give her a faint smile. “Sister, I bet you didn’t actually kill any of them, did you?”
Through the curtain of rain, Yu Miao froze.
Yi Jing chuckled and raised her hand, shaking the control module she had taken from Yu Miao’s pocket.
Yu Miao instinctively reached for her own pocket, only to find it empty.
Probably only Yi Jing could be so familiar with her hiding habits.
From halfway across the deck, Yi Jing waved at Hubert, signaling her to quickly take Yu Miao and leave. Then, he activated his earpiece to contact the armed police outside.
If they claimed there would be a terrorist attack, then not firing a single shot wouldn’t make it much of one.
“Can you hear me?” Yi Jing asked over the comms.
“Loud and clear,” came the immediate reply.
“Portside has armed individuals preparing. Crew is currently scattered, and the assailants have no hostages. Recommend immediate armed suppression,” Yi Jing lied without hesitation.
Yu Miao and Hubert headed towards the starboard side, while the port deck remained empty of personnel. The armed police helicopter, already displaying weapons as a deterrent, immediately activated its mounted machine gun upon hearing Yi Jing’s words, firing a warning burst at the exposed upper section of the port side.
The rapid gunfire and the machine gun’s roar echoed simultaneously, causing Yu Miao to instinctively tilt her head. Hubert, too, was startled by the gunfire, gritting his teeth as he muttered under his breath, “Madman.”
This was sheer recklessness.
Toying with the armed police by spreading false information to achieve personal goals, what if things spiraled out of control? Could the consequences ever be brushed off so easily?
As he spoke, Hubert dragged Yu Miao off the deck and onto the rope ladder leading to the helicopter. Reporters stationed along the distant shoreline witnessed the entire scene, capturing the moment gunfire erupted during the operation.
The sudden armed confrontation shocked the entire city, with news spreading all the way to the jurisdictional authorities. The inexplicable leak of operational details and the discovery of illicit weapons drew intense scrutiny. Simultaneously, the jurisdictional inspection bureau received multiple real-name reports regarding the chairman of the Yi family’s intelligence network. Meanwhile, the family’s coastal estate was breached during the armed standoff, resulting in multiple explosions. An investigative team swiftly intervened, launching a full-scale probe into the Yi family while sealing off the entire estate.
Overnight, the Yi family, once an unshakable giant was marked for certain downfall, its former glory vanishing in an instant.
At the same time, Yi Jing was detained by authorities for repeated violations during the operation, pending further judgment once the investigation into the Yi family concluded.
With the formal investigation underway, the evidence accumulated by Yi Jing, Hubert, Qi Xiao, the deputy prosecutor of the 13th District Court, and many others finally came into play. The Yi family’s facade was swiftly torn apart, forcing them to abandon pretense and engage in open confrontation with investigators. They did everything possible to stall, transferring assets and key personnel at any cost, dragging the investigation into a prolonged stalemate.
Unable to gain the upper hand, the Yi family resorted to underhanded tactics. One by one, those who could prove Yi Jing’s innocence were targeted either kidnapped or cut off from contact.
Security forces faced mounting pressure. Even Yi Jing, under strict supervision, wasn’t spared. Despite being held in a heavily guarded detention room, she survived two assassination attempts, forcing investigators to relocate her twice.
Not long after, another detention site was compromised when poison was discovered in her water supply.
Though imprisoned, Yi Jing remained sharp-witted. She sensed something amiss with the frequent relocations and sure enough, during the third transfer, her route was leaked. A sniper, likely sent by the Yi family, lay in wait at her destination.
As Yi Jing stepped out of the vehicle, she failed to notice the sniper in time. A bullet pierced through her right chest from behind.
Had she not been so starved for novelty after prolonged confinement turning her head at the sound of a nearby puppy’s bark just as the sniper fired the shot would have struck her heart dead center.
But a shot through the right chest wasn’t much better than a direct hit to the heart. Yi Jing only gained a few extra seconds of life.
She felt as if someone had shoved her hard. Before she could react, blood had already soaked half her body.
Pain that felt like it could tear a person apart surged through her nerves. Yi Jing gritted her teeth in agony. In the last second before losing consciousness, she glanced down at the gushing wound and, for some reason, let out a bitter smile. “Well, this is it. I promised to stay with her.”
Then she collapsed to the ground.
Yi Jing had thought she was done for, but after losing consciousness, she found herself dreaming again, the same dream she’d had the night before transmigrating into the novel. The familiar faint scent of rain, the empty space with no background, and the strikingly beautiful young woman standing at a distance, cold yet inexplicably alluring.
Now, Yi Jing was absolutely certain this was Yu Miao. She wanted to move closer and talk to her, but suddenly, the same world-shattering cracks from her previous dream appeared.
Startled, Yi Jing’s chest tightened, and she instinctively rushed forward.
Unlike last time, this time she actually managed to grab Yu Miao, just a second before Yu Miao would have fallen into the endless darkness.
But the ground beneath Yi Jing’s feet crumbled too. In desperation, she clung to whatever she could, one hand gripping Yu Miao’s while the other dug into the sharp, fractured edge of the collapsing world.
The jagged surface, sharp as broken glass, cut deep into Yi Jing’s skin. Blood welled between her fingers as she strained to hold onto Yu Miao, gasping out, “Sister, grab my hand, quick.”
But this Yu Miao didn’t seem to understand. She didn’t return Yi Jing’s grasp or respond to her words. She just stared at Yi Jing with dark, unreadable eyes.
“Sister! ” Yi Jing choked out, but before she could finish, the fragment she was clinging to let out a crisp snap and shattered completely, sending both of them plummeting into the abyss.
Yi Jing thought this was truly the end, but the dream wasn’t over yet. Falling through the darkness, she woke in a haze, her vision blurred by swirling black mist. She couldn’t see Yu Miao anywhere.
Disoriented, Yi Jing instinctively called out, “Sister, Sister? Yu Miao, are you there? It’s me, Yi Jing!”
Instead of finding Yu Miao, an unfamiliar, hollow voice echoed in her ears:
“You already know the outcome. Chasing after a love that shouldn’t exist leads nowhere. If given another chance, would you still choose Yu Miao?”
Frustrated at not finding Yu Miao, Yi Jing snapped at the voice without hesitation, “Of course I’d choose her. Do you know where she is? If not, shut up and leave me alone.”
Perhaps because of her harsh tone, the voice fell silent and didn’t speak again.
Before Yi Jing could continue searching for Yu Miao, an overwhelming sense of weightlessness suddenly took hold. Her consciousness plunged downward, and in the hazy ebb and flow of dizziness, time rapidly rewound. Yi Jing vaguely caught glimpses of a younger version of her aunt and many vaguely familiar faces. At some unnoticed moment in time, the strings of fate were quietly plucked, a tiny change occurred in what seemed like an utterly ordinary instant.
The doomed love story between Yi Qing and Dr. Lin took a slightly different turn. Before their predetermined tragic end, a child who should never have existed appeared between them. Yi Jing hazily witnessed all this, bewildered by what was happening, when she suddenly felt her body growing heavier.
Puzzled, Yi Jing shifted slightly, realizing she was being carried swiftly in someone’s arms. Voices spoke nearby the first woman’s tone was indifferent as she asked, “Are you really taking her home?”
