When the Possessive Omega Fell for Me - Chapter 68
“……”
Yi Jing lowered her eyes, holding Yu Miao tighter as she took a soft breath.
She had intended to calm her emotions before speaking, but ultimately couldn’t resist turning her head to glare fiercely at the butler: “Must you bother us at a time like this?”
The butler heard every word clearly, yet maintained that same gentle, good-natured expression, as if nothing Yi Jing said could ruffle him. Her tone remained mild as she explained: “Miss Jing, this was our agreement.”
Her utterly calm and unshakable demeanor bordered on provocative.
Yi Jing’s brows knitted tightly. She took a deep breath, glancing at Yu Miao in her arms who was watching her with slight concern and a furrowed brow. Suppressing her irritation, she extended her palm toward the butler as calmly as possible: “The terminal.”
The butler smiled at Yi Jing, accepting a terminal from a black-suited attendant behind him and placing it in her palm: “Then we’ll trouble Miss Jing.”
Yi Jing didn’t want to be troubled, she just wanted them gone, far away from her.
But she had already made this deal with the Yi family patriarch through this butler: they would return Yu Miao to her, but in exchange, Yi Jing needed to buy the Yi family one hour to prevent the inspection bureau from finding any direct evidence linking the family to that port.
“Jingjing?” Yu Miao, unaware of the situation, looked up at Yi Jing with worried eyes, softly calling her name.
Yi Jing gently squeezed Yu Miao’s hand, responding quietly: “It’s nothing, just a small matter. I’ll explain everything later, okay?”
“Alright.” Yu Miao wasn’t entirely willing to agree, but with untrustworthy people around especially that deceptively unassuming butler, she gave a slight nod after glancing her way, her delicate brows furrowing slightly.
Yet she couldn’t shake the feeling something unpleasant must have happened during these few hours. Given Yi Jing’s temperament, she wouldn’t easily yield to the Yi family’s pressure. Before the Yi family swallowed their pride enough to initiate contact, they shouldn’t have been able to threaten Yi Jing.
This made the current situation inexplicable.
Having finally found an opportunity to ‘tame’ Yi Jing, why would the Yi family be so generous as to let her go? Let alone bring her here. The Yi family was no charity. Unless…
If she’d been suddenly taken away, Jing jing would have been frantic, she would have acted. So then…
Wait, could Jing jing have threatened the Yi family?
Yu Miao’s eyes widened as she suddenly remembered that port Yi Jing had once accidentally discovered but stopped investigating at her urging.
Was it that port?
Had Yi Jing used it to pressure the patriarch?
Her gaze fell on Yi Jing, who stood nearby sending messages, all she could see was a tall, straight-backed figure.
Had her little alpha really gone that far?
While this approach might find her, how would Jingjing face the patriarch afterward? Had Yi Jing decided to throw all caution to the wind?
Yu Miao quietly observed her surroundings, quickly piecing together the facts from the scant information at the scene. Meanwhile, Yi Jing had already established contact with Xu Jiu’s private line through a new terminal.
Coded messages pre-written into the command system were embedded within seemingly normal communications. Under the guise of routine conversation, Yi Jing instructed Xu Jiu to closely monitor all personnel movements near District Nine’s ports, authorizing preemptive action if emergencies arose.
Xu Jiu repeatedly verified Yi Jing’s safety, only agreeing to halt the operation after receiving unequivocal confirmation. Within minutes, the butler also received news. Yi Jing glanced her way, surmising he’d been informed about the police forces surrounding District Nine standing down again.
“Are we done here?” Yi Jing turned and shot the butler an icy glare. “Our agreement is fulfilled. We’ve both done our parts. Unless you have something else to say, I’m taking my leave with my people. Step aside.”
“Miss Jing,” the butler remained planted, even advancing to block her path, “I wasn’t lying earlier. The old master truly wishes to see you.”
“…” Yi Jing’s expression darkened instantly. Having no patience for further pestering, she stared the butler down before scoffing coldly, “She wants to see me, so I must comply? Move!”
With that, she supported the still visibly frail Yu Miao, ignoring everyone as she turned to leave for medical attention.
“Miss Jing!” The butler called after her. “Don’t you care about the outcome of this operation you orchestrated? Even knowing it was destined to yield nothing, even disregarding the results can you truly be indifferent to the lives of those inspectors who participated?”
“What did you say?” Yi Jing paused, slowly turning back to face him.
For a fleeting moment, her expression turned terrifyingly unfamiliar.
Her mind flashed to the ‘District Five Purge’ that had sparked this chain of events.
That old case had ended in horrific bloodshed, the district chief, who’d mysteriously barricaded himself with explosives before receiving any investigation notice, was gunned down on site. The subsequent urban warfare left countless casualties, wiping out most of District Five’s underworld forces, with only minor players surviving.
From her first review of the case files, Yi Jing had suspected the Yi family’s involvement. Now history seemed to be repeating itself with herself as the Yi family’s latest target.
“Miss Jing, I genuinely believe you should reconsider visiting,” the butler said deferentially, avoiding her gaze.
“And if I refuse?” Yi Jing countered, her face dark with barely contained fury.
“Then… we’d have no choice but to escort you by force,” the butler sighed apologetically.
At his signal, the ageless attendant behind him clapped twice. As the echoes faded, the corridor suddenly filled with the sound of approaching footsteps.
Numerous inconspicuously dressed subordinates, their faces obscured, suddenly emerged from every corner, blocking Yi Jing’s path both in front and behind.
Yi Jing sneered, scanning the black-suited enforcers surrounding her before pulling Yu Miao closer into her embrace. “You’re resorting to this?”
She couldn’t help but think Old Master Yi had lost her mind this was such a low move.
Did he really believe dragging her back to the Yi family estate would nullify the precautions she’d left in place? Going through all this trouble just to force her and Yu Miao back to the manor, wasn’t it utterly redundant?
“You misunderstand. Neither I nor these men have any intention of wasting effort,” the butler replied with unwavering deference. “We merely wish to invite you back for a visit.”
“So I don’t have a choice?” Yi Jing’s patience was wearing thin.
“Please reconsider,” the butler insisted politely. “If you refuse, those of us acting under orders will face considerable difficulty.”
As he spoke, the men accompanying him simultaneously lifted their heads, their gazes locking onto Yi Jing before taking a deliberate step forward, closing in on her and Yu Miao.
Faced with such an overt threat, Yi Jing instinctively tightened her hold on Yu Miao.
Having a weakness always made one more cautious. After a glance at Yu Miao’s equally troubled expression, Yi Jing forced herself to calm down.
It seemed she had no choice but to return for now.
No matter what, she couldn’t drag Yu Miao into danger with her.
Yi Jing had arrived in the Yi family butler’s car, and now she was leaving in it again. This time, however, the butler didn’t have the audacity to blindfold her, she merely escorted her and Yu Miao back to the Yi family estate in the same vehicle.
The drive wasn’t short, clearly indicating the distance from their current location to the Xiangshan District where the Yi estate was situated.
Still, the Yi family’s vehicles were top-tier in performance. Though outwardly unremarkable, their interiors were outfitted with the finest specifications. The driver also chose a route with lighter traffic, arriving at the estate in far less time than expected.
Old Master Yi hadn’t asked to see Yu Miao, and Yi Jing had no intention of letting him. Upon returning, she escorted Yu Miao back to their quarters before following the butler, who had been waiting at a distance, to the main residence.
The grand hall remained as opulent as ever. Trailing the butler through a series of corridors and around a corner, Yi Jing found herself once again in the study where she’d first had her private conversation with Old Master Yi.
“You’re here.” The old man sat behind a dark wooden desk, seemingly occupied with documents until the butler announced Yi Jing’s arrival. Only then did he spare her a glance.
“Grandfather.” Yi Jing studied him with a complicated expression before coolly acknowledging him with a frown.
“Hm.” Old Master Yi glanced at the perpetually illuminated screen beside him, skimming its contents before turning her attention back to Yi Jing with a pointed question. “I heard the butler encountered some resistance when retrieving you?”
Yi Jing didn’t answer. She saw no point in explaining herself now.
After everything that had happened, justifying her reluctance to return to the Yi estate to Old Master Yi would be nothing short of absurd.
After all, both she and Old Master Yi were well aware that their relationship was on the verge of breaking down, so there was no need to keep up pretenses.
Old Master Yi didn’t seem the least bit bothered by Yi Jing’s defiant attitude. Seeing her remain silent for so long, he merely smiled and spoke with perfect ease: “This is nothing unusual. Young people always think they’ve grown up enough to start making their own decisions, believing they’re better than anyone else and capable of controlling everything. Only after suffering setbacks do they realize their own limitations. It’s a common situation, I’ve dealt with it many times. You’re not the first junior I’ve had to teach, and you likely won’t be the last.”
“What? What are you talking about?” Yi Jing frowned, not understanding what Old Master Yi was getting at.
Seated calmly behind her desk, Old Master Yi turned the holographic screen halfway around, displaying its contents directly to Yi Jing. To her shock, it showed surveillance footage from inside and outside the private port controlled by the Yi family in District Nine, some even from the internal perspectives of the operation teams, so clear that she could make out the weapons in the officers’ hands.
“See this? This was an operation you planned yourself. From the decision to act to the completion of the raid, it took less than three hours. You personally oversaw every step, so in theory, nothing should have gone wrong.
And yet, the family was still able to remotely monitor the entire operation. All your efforts amounted to nothing in the face of the family’s reachyou couldn’t hide a single thing. Do you understand now? No matter how capable you are, you’ll never escape the family’s grasp. You were born a Yi, and that means you’ll die a Yi.”
“…!!”
Yi Jing took a few uncertain steps toward the desk, her eyes locking onto the sparse activity in the port’s interior. According to the footage, most areas around the port had already been emptied. Even the hotels and leisure districts built near but slightly removed from the port showed no signs of tourists.
She didn’t take Old Master Yi’s words seriously, they sounded like pure nonsense.
If the Yi family truly were all-knowing and all-powerful, why would they still be stuck in Jing’an City? They might as well rule the world instead of wasting time lecturing her here. And if they really knew everything, why had they backed down over the Laurence incident on the overpass? Clearly, they hadn’t anticipated that she knew so much.
But the surveillance footage from District Nine did seem off.
The screen displayed over twenty different camera feeds, covering key areas inside and outside the port. Yet aside from a handful of oblivious guests still staying at the hotels and some staff members, the massive port area was nearly devoid of life. The actual port had been sealed off in advance.
The footage was right in front of her, and Yi Jing could see it clearly the secret warehouses inside the port showed almost no signs of the goods being moved, as if Old Master Yi had already decided to abandon the place entirely. Meanwhile, the movements of the operation teams from the Inspectorate on the port’s outskirts were being tracked down to the smallest detail, with micro-cameras following them the entire way as if they were acting under the Yi family’s watchful gaze.
Yi Jing knew at a glance that the situation had taken a dire turn.
Earlier on the overpass, she and Old Master Yi had struck a deal, she would give him one hour to remove the contraband from the port to prevent the Yi family’s dealings from being exposed, and in return, he would release Yu Miao to her.
Yi Jing had assumed that the Yi family wouldn’t be able to completely erase all traces of the illegal transactions in such a short time. The oversight committee would likely still find some clues to justify their operation. But she never expected Old Master Yi to leave all the contraband untouched.
Such a massive amount of illicit goods surfacing during the election period would inevitably draw intense scrutiny. If the oversight committee discovered them, they would tear apart the entire Ninth District to trace the source. Old Master Yi, who had always excelled at colluding with officials, couldn’t possibly be unaware of this nor would he take such a risk.
Unless…
Yi Jing’s gaze darted urgently to the surveillance footage of the port’s perimeter.
Sure enough, the oversight committee members had already dispersed throughout the port area, seemingly preparing to investigate the core zone. The lead inspectors were mere meters away from stumbling upon the secret warehouse.
“What are you planning?!” Yi Jing’s voice sharpened with alarm.
A sinking feeling gripped her things were about to spiral out of control.
“Jing jing, this is your grandfather’s lesson for you. Don’t think that just because you’ve gained some ability, you can overestimate yourself and believe you’ve truly slipped free from your elders’ grasp.” Old Master Yi made no mention of the Yi family’s repeated failed attempts to intimidate or threaten Yi Jing over the past two days, choosing only now to speak of a “lesson.”
“What do you mean?!” Yi Jing stormed up to her desk.
In her fury, she lunged for her collar, only to be restrained by bodyguards who had been silently stationed in the study.
Ignoring them, she shoved the guards aside and snapped at Old Master Yi, “If you have a problem, take it up with me! Don’t drag innocent people into this! They’re just doing their jobs!”
Old Master Yi shook her head slightly, her expression tinged with something like regret as if lamenting her inability to grasp the situation.
Instead of responding, he tapped a command into the terminal beside him. Within seconds, the surveillance feeds from the port’s core began to tremble, the images distorting.
Then, a serpentine blaze erupted on-screen, swallowing the corridor whole.
The searing flames licked at the cameras, triggering small explosions one after another. The feeds blinked out in rapid succession.
Yi Jing watched, frozen, as the fire spread and the screens went dark until only the perimeter cameras remained active.
The surviving footage captured the chaos near the secret warehouse. As the inner surveillance feeds failed, the inferno burst through the windows, setting off a meticulously arranged chain of explosions.
A cataclysmic blast erupted from the heart of the port.
Flames and shockwaves rocketed skyward. The entire structure housing the contraband was obliterated, debris raining down as the port’s core collapsed into ruin.
“You..” Yi Jing’s heart plummeted, her eyes widening in fury. Images flashed through her mind faces she’d seen daily during her time at the Supervision Bureau but never paid much attention to. Forgetting the watchful eyes of the bodyguards behind her, she barely took two steps before one seized her shoulder and forced her down.
“Those were all inspectors from the Supervision Bureau! So many lives. What are you trying to do?” Though her shoulder was wrenched painfully, Yi Jing seemed numb to it. All she wanted now was to know what the hell Old Master Yi was thinking.
But the old man showed no intention of answering her.
No matter how agitated Yi Jing became, she merely tilted her head slightly, studying the ruins on the surveillance feed with detached interest. Slowly, he rolled a string of jade beads between her fingers, her voice low but impossible to ignore as he mused aloud:
“A large-scale targeted operation, launched without reporting to higher authorities, ends with nothing but failure alerting the enemy, achieving nothing, and causing casualties among public officials. This counts as gross dereliction of duty. After such a blunder, even if I let you return to the Supervision Bureau, you’d face disciplinary action. Better to stay home quietly for a while and wait for the election to pass.”
Yi Jing clenched her jaw, her dark gaze fixed on the old man, showing no sign of submission.
Old Master Yi chuckled meaningfully at her defiance. “You’ll understand my reasoning eventually. Opposing the family now does you no good.”
With that, he waved dismissively at the bodyguards behind her, lowering his eyes as if she were no longer worth his attention. “Take her away. Let her cool off alone, no disturbances.”
The two bodyguards hauled Yi Jing up, twisting her arms as they dragged her toward the door.
Their movements were brutal, wrenching her arms nearly behind her back, painful just to watch. Yet Yi Jing seemed oblivious, her burning stare locked on Old Master Yi, her mind consumed by the urge to break free, storm back, and demand answers.
Why detonate the explosion? Why kill so many?
Did he truly believe sacrificing lives would solve anything?
Gritting her teeth, Yi Jing managed to wrench one arm free and clawed at the doorframe, her nails gouging shallow marks into the wood. But as she took in Old Master Yi’s ruthless, unshaken demeanor, a chilling realization struck her, the Yi family was beyond saving. And so was he.
As long as Old Master Yi lived, as long as the Yi family stood, this would never end.
After a brief, defiant pause, Yi Jing finally released her grip, letting the emotionless bodyguards escort her out.
Rash impulses were useless now, she had already acted recklessly once.
There was only one way left.
Eliminate Old Master Yi.
Destroy the Yi family for good.
After leaving the study, the people under Old Master Yi didn’t take Yi Jing back to her residence with Yu Miao, nor to the private courtyard she had stayed in before moving in with Yu Miao when she first arrived at the Yi family. Instead, she was taken to the old church where she had first met Yu Miao.
Since settling into the Yi family estate, Yi Jing had hardly visited this place. She had assumed it had been abandoned, never expecting it would still be in use.
Leading the way at the front was the butler from Old Master Yi’s side. Yi Jing currently had little interest in engaging with him, simply watching as the butler deftly unlocked the chains at the entrance of the old church before guiding Yi Jing and the others inside.
Yi Jing had visited this place several times before, but this was her first glimpse of the church’s main hall. A slightly aged, towering statue of the Virgin Mary stood at the center, with four rows of old-fashioned wooden pews arranged before it, the entire scene perfectly preserved from last century’s ecclesiastical style.
After surveying the church’s interior, Yi Jing followed the butler and bodyguards through the nave to the familiar spiral staircase.
The structure remained unchanged dual concentric staircases. The butler led Yi Jing and the guards upward, always keeping to the inner steps until reaching the fifth floor. There, they turned into the fifth-level corridor, eventually stopping before a pitch-black wooden door.
The butler produced a simple-looking bronze key to unlock it, revealing the true barrier behind, a sealed metal door. With practiced ease, he verified her identity to open the heavy portal, then pushed it inward with a deep groan. Bowing slightly, she announced, “Miss Jing, this way please. This is where family members reflect upon their mistakes.”
“Ridiculous,” Yi Jing sneered, brushing past the two obstructive bodyguards as she strode inside.
The chamber’s decor leaned heavily into archaic aesthetics dim, low-ceilinged, with deliberately oppressive lighting casting gloomy shadows. At the center stood a rusted iron chair, surrounded by various “retro” torture devices that seemed designed more for psychological torment than actual use. Notably absent were any beds or resting facilities.
A small door in the corner presumably led to a washroom.
“Miss Jing, pardon the interruption, but we’ll need you to wear this first.” The metallic clinking of chains interrupted Yi Jing’s inspection before she could finish surveying the room.
Turning, she saw the butler holding a lengthy chain, one end fitted with an ankle shackle, the other permanently welded to the iron chair’s leg. Estimating its length, Yi Jing deduced it would just permit access to the washroom while restricting movement.
“How inventive our family traditions are,” she remarked acidly.
“My apologies.”
Kneeling, the butler secured the shackle over Yi Jing’s trousers, effectively transforming her into a prisoner.
Ignoring the departing entourage, Yi Jing listened to their retreating footsteps as the light gradually diminished with the metal door’s closure, leaving only the cell’s feeble illumination.
As darkness enveloped everything, the silence became so profound it felt like entering another world. Standing motionless, within two minutes Yi Jing’s mind had already conjured seven or eight methods someone could use to eliminate her unnoticed during her confinement here.
Anyone who wished her dead might attempt it, whether she knew of their existence or not.
After dwelling on these thoughts for just a short while, Yi Jing felt her composure beginning to crumble. She had to turn away and sit on the cold chair in the cell to force herself to calm down.
Only now did Yi Jing truly begin to grasp the brutality within the Yi family. Those decorative ‘torture devices’ placed nearby hadn’t even been used on her yet, who knew what horrors would unfold if they were actually employed? This was indeed a family long involved in large-scale contraband trade, and the patriarch was truly worthy of being the head of a powerful clan that could casually decide the fates of dozens or even hundreds of people with mere words.
The waters ran terrifyingly deep.
At this thought, Yi Jing couldn’t help but recall the explosion she had witnessed with her own eyes, and the inspectors who might have died during the operation.
Guilt surged over her like a tidal wave, instantly drowning her completely.
It was all her fault.
She had gravely underestimated how vicious her opponents could be.
Old Master Yi might be reluctant to kill her outright, but he wouldn’t hesitate to use the people she loved to control her to ensure she remained at this ‘gambling table’ without flipping it over in rebellion while killing countless other innocent people as warnings to her, the true instigator of this disaster.
Yi Jing pressed her hands painfully against her forehead. In the suffocating silence of the cell, her emotions alone were enough to shatter her psychological defenses. But she had already made one catastrophic mistake, she had been too reckless, too arrogant, and so many had died because of it. She absolutely couldn’t repeat the same error.
No more deaths. If something or someone had to be destroyed, then let it be everything connected to the Yi family.
She wanted the guilty to perish. She wanted Jing’an City to never again witness horrors like the ‘Fifth District Purge’ or the Ninth District Harbor explosion. She wanted to live peacefully with Yu Miao.
