- Chapter 66.2 - If Old Master Yi Was Set on Making Her Suffer, She’d Make Sure He Didn’t Get to Enjoy It
Yi Jing silently looked at the map in her hand, listening to the young officer’s report while anxiously considering where Yu Miao might have been taken.
The Yi family’s roots in Jing’an City were too deep. They could even brazenly deal with a nearly omnipresent monitoring system like “Sky Eye”. It was simply lawless. For a moment, even Yi Jing couldn’t think of where to intercept them.
“Have the Sky Eye tracking results been compared with the positioning map in Lin Fei’s hands?”
“After comparison, we can confirm this is the vehicle carrying the tracking device assigned by the Supervision Bureau. It’s currently passing through T3 district, moving from Tonghui Road toward Kuailin Mountain.”
“The vehicle with the Supervision Bureau’s tracker.” Yi Jing murmured, lowering her gaze before looking up at the junior officer. Without a trace of surprise in her expression, she said, “So, you also suspect that the car currently carrying the tracker might not be the one actually holding Yu Miao captive, right?”
The junior officer hesitated, averting his eyes without responding.
The suspect had repeatedly crossed into surveillance-blind zones within just over ten minutes and had split the convoy multiple times to mislead pursuit. With such strong counter-surveillance awareness, it was hard to guarantee whether the tracker was still with Yu Miao.
But right now, there was no other option.
Yi Jing took a slow, deep breath and handed the terminal back to the officer, her tone calm and steady. “Send me the location data for all highly suspicious vehicles. I’ll pursue them.”
Even if she had to check them one by one, she would find Yu Miao.
Qi Xiao glanced at Yi Jing, then nodded at the junior officer. Since there was no better alternative, this was the only way forward.
Yi Jing and Qi Xiao boarded the chief inspector’s official vehicle assigned by the police department, with the junior officer taking the wheel. Yi Jing took charge of the positioning map and the surveillance feed from headquarters, carefully analyzing all possible locations where Yu Miao could be hidden based on District 13’s layout.
Apart from the car carrying the tracker, the other vehicles that had split from the convoy earlier were already under Yi Jing and Qi Xiao’s surveillance—these individuals were also highly suspicious of abducting Yu Miao.
The car that had fled with the tracker until the last second before the signal vanished only seemed the most suspicious on the surface. Given how long it had been, it was unlikely the tracker hadn’t been discovered. That vehicle was probably just a decoy to divert their attention—Lin Fei and the trackers following it would be enough.
If any real leads emerged, nearby patrol units would respond at top speed, and Yi Jing would rush there immediately.
As Yi Jing tracked the other suspicious vehicles from Qi Xiao’s car, she monitored their routes in real time, predicting their possible destinations while noting every location they passed—just in case the Yi family had stashed Yu Miao somewhere along the way. It was mentally exhausting work.
With so many targets to investigate, their search yielded no immediate results. Meanwhile, Lin Fei, who had been relentlessly pursuing a single vehicle, was the first to get a breakthrough.
Lin Fei and two trackers had chased the car onto the highway, finally intercepting it after over twenty minutes. The vehicle—which had been moving at high speed with the tracker until the signal cut out—was stopped at a checkpoint near Jing’an City’s border.
After searching the car, Lin Fei only found the destroyed tracker.
Yu Miao wasn’t inside. But since the car had still been moving when the signal disappeared—without stopping—there had been no time to transfer her. This confirmed the vehicle was just a diversion. The Yi family had discovered the tracker much earlier than they’d thought.
Yi Jing took a deep breath and reopened the surveillance files sent by the officers, meticulously reviewing every private area along the Yi family convoy’s route that lacked camera coverage. She reassessed the suspiciousness level of each flagged vehicle.
Beside her, Qi Xiao cast a worried glance her way before looking at the compiled data from their subordinates. With a sympathetic expression, he reached out to squeeze her shoulder. “Don’t rush. Yi Hengzhi gains nothing by turning against you now. You haven’t even done anything for him yet—why would he discard such a useful pawn? Besides, you have backing too. Provoking you wouldn’t benefit him either. Relax. Someone will handle the analysis. There’s no point in straining yourself like this.”
Yi Jing’s fingers, which had been flying across the virtual keyboard, paused. Her face stiffened for a moment before she raised a hand to cover her eyes, her voice trembling slightly with vulnerability. “I can’t just sit here doing nothing.”
Qi Xiao hesitated, struggling to find the right words before finally sending a message to the officers stationed at the precinct: “Recall all standby units. Full mobilization—find the magistrate’s family immediately.”
Sitting beside Qi Xiao, Yi Jing listened to every word, her hands unconsciously clenching. Her expression was cold and grim.
Deploying all officers now was tantamount to revealing their hand. Old Man Yi could easily gauge Yi Jing’s actual influence based on this operation. If that happened, he wouldn’t even need to confront her directly—just return Yu Miao unharmed, hold his position, and then dismantle her forces piece by piece. Like boiling a frog slowly, he could neutralize her without resistance, leaving her powerless to fight back.
This was precisely why she and Qi Xiao had held back their full force until now. But at this momen, Yi Jing was losing her composure.
Before long, Xu Jiu’s message came through.
Several decoy vehicles and a flyer, likely meant as distractions, had been intercepted by the second surveillance team. Meanwhile, every available agent Yi Jing could mobilize from the oversight committee joined the precinct officers in action.
With this, the majority of Yi Jing and Qi Xiao’s operational teams across the security and judicial branches had been exposed. The balance of power between the two sides gradually evened out—the Yi family’s initial manpower advantage was now offset by the combined forces of the precinct and oversight committee. The situation showed signs of stabilizing.
Yi Jing’s tension eased slightly, and without hesitation, she threw herself into coordinating the oversight committee and city precinct’s operations. But before she could contribute much, Qi Xiao received another message from the officers at the precinct.
A high-ranking security official had intervened, abruptly halting their requests for surveillance and tracker access. Their authority to use the surveillance system was temporarily revoked. The officers stationed at the precinct received direct orders to cease all operations immediately—or face suspension and loss of clearance.
In contrast, the Inspectorate had yet to receive similar notifications. Delinke and Yi Jing still held high-ranking positions within the judicial system, making it difficult for the Yi family to extend their influence there despite their power. However, without the support of the public security department and relying solely on the personnel from the supervisory committee, the rescue operation quickly fell into a disadvantage. Not to mention, the Inspectorate itself began facing various pressures.
As the officers’ actions were halted, numerous inexplicable individuals started pressuring Yi Jing. Within just over ten minutes, she had received questioning emails from multiple departments, each demanding she suspend the operation, return to the municipal department to report, and justify the necessity of the action before considering whether to proceed.
But if they had to wait for their approval, who knew how long it would take? Yu Miao could have been taken anywhere by now!
Having participated in election preparations, Yi Jing was all too familiar with these people’s tactics—anything they wanted to delay would inevitably be dragged out indefinitely. Right now, with Yu Miao missing, she had no patience to deal with them. Even if she were willing to explain her reasons, they would undoubtedly find ways to keep her tied up at the municipal department.
These people just loved making trouble for her!
“Tsk, that old fox Yi Hengzhi is really.” Qi Xiao, sitting beside Yi Jing and having caught most of what was happening, looked grim. After racking her brain for a solution to no avail, she finally squeezed Yi Jing’s shoulder and asked, “What do we do now?”
The higher-ups in the public security department were also putting immense pressure on Qi Xiao.
Unlike Yi Jing, who had a defiant and unpredictable superior, several of Qi Xiao’s superiors in the public security hierarchy were close to the Yi family. Caught between her superiors and her friend, Qi Xiao was in a tough spot, barely managing to mobilize all available resources to continue assisting Yi Jing.
“He’s forcing my hand,” Yi Jing muttered, interlacing her fingers and pressing the thin skin over her knuckles, trying to regain her composure amidst her near-breaking point to assess the situation calmly.
With the revocation of the Sky Eye’s usage rights, the trackers halting their operations, and both officers and inspectors facing pressure from above, Old Man Yi was clearly pushing her to reveal her true trump cards. Now wasn’t the time for an outright confrontation—Old Man Yi wouldn’t dare keep Yu Miao from her permanently. The pressure was simply because he wasn’t satisfied with the strength Yi Jing had shown so far.
He didn’t believe these were all the cards she held.
The incident involving Zhao Qin’s fall into the river in District Three and what happened at the mayor’s residence had likely already raised Old Man Yi’s suspicions. He refused to believe she only had the allies she’d shown openly. Restricting the Sky Eye and the trackers was meant to force her to contact her organization and deploy those hidden assets she was reluctant to expose, laying all her cards on the table.
“If you’re forcing me, then I have nothing left to hold back.” Yi Jing coldly lifted her gaze to the road ahead, her long, thick lashes casting a shadow over her eyes, making her expression dark and ruthless, devoid of any warmth.
“W-what are you planning?” Qi Xiao asked nervously, having never seen Yi Jing like this before.
“Recall all personnel from the police station. There’s no need to take further risks. You and I will jointly issue an inspection order—I’ll use it to intimidate the precinct police in District Nine,” Yi Jing said, turning to Qi Xiao.
“Inspection order?” Qi Xiao was taken aback. “What do you need an inspection order for at a time like—”
Halfway through his sentence, Qi Xiao suddenly grasped Yi Jing’s intention.
Old Master Yi had acted ruthlessly first, so it was only fair for others to respond with cunning tactics.
The Yi family was now blatantly cutting off their rescue efforts and weakening their forces. At this point, engaging in a direct confrontation of strength would be foolish—it would mean walking right into the enemy’s trap, likely resulting in heavy losses and a collapse from which they might never recover.
The best strategy was to cut the problem at its root—temporarily abandon reclaiming what they wanted and instead strike at the enemy’s weak spot with a fatal blow. Only when the Yi family could no longer hide Yu Miao would the real opportunity to rescue her arise.
But to do this, they had to clearly identify a critical weakness of the Yi family—one that was truly fatal. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to threaten anyone. Did Yi Jing actually know of such a thing? And even if she did, when had she obtained leverage over the Yi family?
Qi Xiao pondered for a moment but came up with nothing.
Still, now wasn’t the time to dwell on it. After only a brief hesitation, Qi Xiao replied firmly, “Fine, I’ll sign the inspection order with you.”
“Mm.” Yi Jing acknowledged with a nod, not even glancing at Qi Xiao as she picked up her terminal and made a call. Her gaze remained fixed ahead, cold and sharp, as if she wanted to tear Old Master Yi apart with a madness that was eerily controlled. “Don’t worry, there won’t be any issues this time. On the inspection order, my name, the election preparation committee, and the supervisory court will all take precedence over the municipal police.”
Qi Xiao sighed softly and muttered under his breath, “That’s not what I’m worried about.”
What concerned him now was what reckless actions Yi Jing might take in her fury. They still had long-term plans, after all. Old Master Yi wanted to avoid losses and resolve the rebellion of his suddenly defiant descendant without bloodshed—but likewise, they too wanted to uproot the deeply entrenched Yi family at the smallest cost possible.
But Yi Jing didn’t seem to hear him at all, as if her ears had grown filters that screened out everything Qi Xiao said. She seemed capable of processing only the information she wanted to hear—and the only thing she wanted to hear right now was news about Yu Miao.
“Hello? Chief?”
Xu Jiu’s calm voice came through the call, accompanied by the screech of brakes. Further in the background, voices clamored—someone was shouting instructions about a pursuit plan. “Block that erratic car!” one voice yelled, while another barked, “Cut them off! Cut them off!”
The roar of engines and the sharp squeal of tires repeated without pause, suggesting Xu Jiu had chased the suspicious vehicles into some remote corner. The sounds made it clear the situation had escalated to a high-speed game of interception.
“How’s the situation?” Yi Jing asked.
“Miss Yu probably isn’t in that vehicle, but the driver seems deranged—he’d rather drive recklessly against traffic than stop for inspection. In just this short time, he’s already crashed into several civilian cars. Utter lawlessness.” Xu Jiu’s voice carried unmistakable frustration, clearly itching to drag that driver out and bring him to justice.
“Stand down for now,” Yi Jing said.
“What? We’re not pursuing anymore? What about Miss Yu?” Xu Jiu was taken aback but instinctively eased off the accelerator.
“That man isn’t going anywhere—he’ll have plenty of time behind bars later. And whoever’s backing him won’t balk at covering the damages,” Yi Jing replied calmly, his tone suggesting he had regained composure. “The day they pay dearly isn’t far off.”
“Pull back immediately. Suspend all pursuit of the kidnapping suspect. Notify every field agent to prepare for an operation in District Nine. Report your positions, then proceed to District Nine at maximum speed. I’ll send the destination coordinates shortly—once confirmed, I’ll deploy aerial support with operational gear.”
Xu Jiu, who had been fuming over chasing some brazen underling just moments ago, froze briefly before her expression hardened into solemn focus. All traces of impatience vanished as she answered firmly, “Understood!”
She no longer had time to waste on petty anger.
If Yi Jing’s orders were followed, over half the Inspection Bureau would mobilize—an operation of this scale was no minor matter.
Xu Jiu had a vague sense that Yi Jing might be flipping the table. A flicker of unease stirred in her—the Yi family was a monstrous entity, its roots sprawling deeper and more horrifying the more one investigated. Tackling them head-on seemed reckless.
But having already placed her bets on Yi Jing, she couldn’t afford second thoughts now.
Either commit fully to his cause or abandon any pretense of “justice,” “integrity,” or “faith”—close her eyes and become another complacent cog like Chen Feng in the courts.
Xu Jiu had chosen Yi Jing precisely because she refused to turn a blind eye to the rot festering beneath the law.
Besides, she trusted Yi Jing wasn’t acting rashly.
“Myself and trainees Cai and Fan are at the intersection of Central Avenue and Ring Road, coordinates (***, ***, ***). We’ll take Highway S322 through Districts Seven and Three to reach District Nine, refueling in Three. Estimated arrival in District Nine in three hours—final ETA subject to actual arrival. Other agents’ positions will be compiled and relayed to the Chief Inspector.” Without hesitation, Xu Jiu swung the car around and sped toward the nearest highway entrance.
“Good. I’ll send the destination coordinates shortly,” Yi Jing said before tapping the young officer serving as his driver. “Turn us around.”
“Uh—right,” the officer stammered, still processing the high-stakes power struggle he’d just overheard. “Where to?”
“The Inspectorate. Fast as possible—speed is the priority, nothing else matters.” Yi Jing’s voice was ice.
“Oh, right!” The young officer stuttered nervously, swiftly making a turn to head toward the supervisory office while flooring the accelerator, instantly pushing the speed to its limit.
Yi Jing was caught off guard and jerked backward, making Qi Xiao’s face twist in a ‘we’re so dead’ expression. He desperately wanted to drag his subordinate over and ask if her brain could only process one thing at a time—why else would she drive like this with a superior in the car? But Yi Jing herself didn’t seem to mind the officer’s minor recklessness at all.
She had to get back as quickly as possible, mobilizing the supervisory office’s personnel before the Yi family could react, ensuring this plan would proceed without obstruction.
Old Master Yi thought he could threaten her? Thought he could force her hand? Well, she’d just drop the ultimate bomb then. Yu Miao had once warned her that the private dock in District Nine wasn’t something they could meddle with lightly—there were too many critical things involved, and disturbing them might truly provoke the old man’s wrath.
But right now, Yi Jing couldn’t care less.
If Old Master Yi didn’t want her to have peace, then she wouldn’t let him sit back and enjoy the show either.
Everyone was going down with her, no one got to stay on the sidelines.
