- Chapter 31 - Jealous of Oneself
The words drifting into her ears were laced with pain and confusion, and a sudden wave of shared sympathy welled up in Shi Yining’s heart.
She spoke softly, “In a way, you and I are of the same kind… I have forgotten many things from the past, forgotten someone vital to me… and you, you seem to be living in a daze as well…”
Hearing this, the look of pain in Jiang Liuyue’s eyes diminished slightly. She tentatively drifted a bit closer, her voice carrying a glimmer of cautious hope.
“According to what Miss Shi says, since we are the same kind of people, shouldn’t we be together?”
“Sophistry!” Shi Yining frowned and stepped back, maintaining her distance.
“Miss Shi…” Jiang Liuyue suddenly teleported to her side and, without a word, pulled her into a tight embrace.
Despite her domineering actions, her words were filled with immense grievance. “I am not using sophistry; everything I said is the truth…”
Caught off guard, Shi Yining fell into the warm embrace and instinctively began to struggle.
“Jiang Liuyue, let go of me!”
The figure behind her remained motionless. “In the past, Miss Shi and I always interacted like this. Now that Miss Shi has forgotten me, I must hold you like this every day.”
Unable to break free, Shi Yining felt a twinge of regret for her earlier words. She said irritably, “Instead of doing this, why don’t you find a way to help me recover my memories?”
After a moment of silence, a very soft “Alright” reached her ear.
Shi Yining was half-doubting. “Do you really have a way?”
Jiang Liuyue lowered her head and nuzzled against Shi Yining’s slender neck, reassuring her, “I do…”
The soft sensation touched her heart, and a faint blush appeared on Shi Yining’s face. “Then tell me, what exactly is the method? I want to see if it’s actually reliable.”
Jiang Liuyue continued, “Before the demon disaster in the Nine-Layer Abyss, Miss Shi once took me to the library of the Xuanqing Sect to search for secret techniques to restore memories… While those techniques were useless for a soul body like mine, they might be able to help Miss Shi.”
Upon hearing this, the hope that had just ignited in Shi Yining’s heart vanished instantly. She shook her head gently, a bitter smile touching the corners of her lips.
“Practicing secret techniques requires the use of spiritual power. But since I woke up from my coma ten days ago, I can hardly maintain even basic meditation, let alone practice complex secret techniques.”
“Why is that?”
“I don’t know… Whenever I try to cultivate, after barely a hundred breaths, a wave of exhaustion immediately overcomes me, and I cannot resist it. Now, I spend most of my time in deep sleep.”
“Let me help you,” Jiang Liuyue’s voice was as gentle as water. “We will cultivate together. I believe we can slowly change this predicament.”
Shi Yining instinctively looked up, meeting a gaze filled with focus and sincerity. Such a pure look quietly melted the layer of ice called suspicion in her heart.
“Fine… I’ll trust you this once.” Shi Yining paused before continuing, “You said you would help me cultivate. Specifically, how will you do it?”
“There is a contract connecting Miss Shi and me. When we cultivate together, as soon as Miss Shi feels weary, I will use this contract to find a way to restore clarity to your consciousness…”
“A contract?” Shi Yining keenly caught the word, her brow furrowing slightly. “What kind of contract is it?”
“It is a Soul Contract,” Jiang Liuyue explained softly. “I am a soul body. If not for this contract maintaining the connection, Miss Shi would only feel a bone-chilling cold when we touch like this, rather than warmth.”
Shi Yining fell silent for a moment, her fingertips tightening unconsciously. She pressed further, “This Soul Contract… what other effects does it have? Since it has been established, can it be dissolved?”
The moment she spoke, the embrace around her suddenly tightened.
“Unless my soul is scattered and destroyed, the contract can never be dissolved!” Jiang Liuyue’s tone held a stubborn decisiveness. “If Miss Shi truly does not wish to be with me, then simply get rid of me. Otherwise, I will haunt Miss Shi for lifetimes to come…”
The words were obsessively deep, causing Shi Yining’s heart to tremble suddenly.
A strange sense of familiarity surged into her mind.
The blurred memories, which had been shrouded in clouds, seemed to have a layer pulled back by an invisible giant hand at this moment.
Once upon a time, someone had held her just as tightly and whispered the same words in her ear.
That person… could it be the Jiang Liuyue before her?
Once this thought emerged, it quietly took root in Shi Yining’s heart.
The figure deep in her memories bore a striking resemblance to her.
Jiang Liuyue had said that another version of her existed in the world. Was it possible that those experiences of life and death were shared with that other her?
New doubts followed: where was that other her now?
And why… were her Master and Junior Sister so secretive about it?
At this moment, a conjecture gradually surfaced in Shi Yining’s heart, causing her face to turn a shade paler.
Could it be that the other “Jiang Liuyue” was actually a demonic cultivator?
Had she committed a great taboo by falling in love with a demon? Was it because her forgetting the other party was a good thing for her Master and Junior Sister that they always changed the subject whenever she asked?
“Jiang Liuyue…”
Shi Yining’s voice was very soft, yet it was exceptionally clear within the silent bedroom.
“I’m here…” Jiang Liuyue responded immediately, her warm breath brushing against the woman’s ear. “Does Miss Shi have something to ask me?”
“About the other you…” Shi Yining weighed her words carefully. “Do you truly know nothing at all?”
The embrace behind her seemed to stiffen for a fleeting moment.
“Why is Miss Shi so curious about the other me? Could it be that the one Miss Shi truly likes is her?”
“I was just asking in passing… Jiang Liuyue, how can you be jealous of your own self?”
“The other me… and the me standing before Miss Shi have independent consciousnesses. In my view, we can be considered different people. Even if Miss Shi likes her, you are only allowed to like me. You aren’t allowed to like her!”
Shi Yining felt helpless. “Jiang Liuyue, you are simply being unreasonable.”
“How am I being unreasonable? Am I wrong? Since our consciousnesses aren’t shared, how can we be considered the same person? She is she, and I am I. If a day comes when I lay eyes on her, and if I can defeat her, I will certainly strike. Once I’ve triumphed over her, I can have Miss Shi all to myself.”
Shi Yining had a bit of a headache. “Stop talking with such twisted logic; you haven’t answered my question yet.”
At the mention of this, Jiang Liuyue’s voice suddenly dropped a few notches, tinged with a hint of bewilderment. “In my memory… there is indeed no information regarding her. If I must say, perhaps it has something to do with the Yuehua Sect? Regardless, whenever I think of anything related to that sect, my memories become extremely blurred.”
Shi Yining fell silent for a moment. “If it’s related to the Yuehua Sect, it’s also possible you are an enemy of the Yuehua Sect… Have you ever considered that you might be a demonic cultivator?”
The question was sudden. Jiang Liuyue froze for a moment, a trace of vacancy flickering in her eyes. “Why would Miss Shi think that?”
“Look at yourself… appearing in the middle of the night, silently sneaking into my bedroom, climbing onto my couch…” Shi Yining paused, her voice growing even softer. “And holding me forcibly regardless of my will… what kind of righteous cultivator who adheres to etiquette and law would behave like this?”
Before she could finish, her chin was suddenly gripped by slender, jade-like fingers and forced upward.
Without giving Shi Yining time to react, an irresistible kiss descended upon her.
Shi Yining’s eyes snapped wide open, and her mind went blank for a moment. Once she regained her senses, she struggled rapidly, but her hands were easily restrained by the other woman.
In a mix of shame and annoyance, she used her pearly teeth to bite down hard on the soft flesh.
Jiang Liuyue hissed in pain as a dot of crimson seeped from her lip.
Yet she did not get angry; instead, she laughed. Her fingertips brushed over the wound as she looked up slightly, her voice deep. “Miss Shi, if I truly were a demonic cultivator, this is exactly how I should treat you… wouldn’t that fit your imagination of a demonic practitioner even better?”
“Jiang Liuyue, you are simply—” Shi Yining hurriedly wiped the corner of her mouth, but before she could finish, she was interrupted by a sudden voice from outside the door.
“Senior Sister, I thought I heard you speaking with someone?” Yu Shang’s sleepy voice approached from the distance.
Shi Yining was startled. In that instant, action bypassed thought; she quickly pushed Jiang Liuyue down onto the couch, pulled the brocade quilt over her to cover her tightly, and lay down herself.
This sudden intimacy startled Jiang Liuyue slightly. The words “Others cannot see me,” which were on the tip of her tongue, remained unsaid after all.
Shi Yining did not respond to her Junior Sister. She knew that once she responded, it would be harder to explain. It was better to pretend to be in a deep sleep; that way, her Junior Sister would think she was talking in her sleep and wouldn’t give it more thought.
To prevent Jiang Liuyue from causing trouble, Shi Yining quietly pressed her hand against the quilt, signaling her not to move.
The sound of a door creaking open suddenly reached her ears.
Sensing her Junior Sister walking in with bleary eyes, Shi Yining immediately closed her eyes and feigned sleep.
After about ten breaths passed, Yu Chang reached the bedside.
Was it her imagination?
She clearly heard someone talking just now? Could it be… Senior Sister was having a nightmare?
Gazing at the quiet sleeping face of the woman on the couch, Yu Chang unconsciously leaned down slightly.
Just as she was about to touch those soft, vermilion lips, she suddenly stopped, her long eyelashes trembling.
No… she couldn’t do this. If Senior Sister found out, she would surely be angry and ignore her…
Suppressing the various emotions surging in her heart, Yu Chang gave a soft sigh. She carefully tucked in the corners of her Senior Sister’s quilt, turned around, and quietly left.
Only when the sound of footsteps had completely vanished outside did Shi Yining breathe a slight sigh of relief. She lightly lifted the quilt, only to find Jiang Liuyue gazing at her quietly, the emotions in her eyes difficult to decipher.
“Was Miss Shi… protecting me just now?”
Shi Yining turned her head away, avoiding that overly focused gaze, her fingertips unconsciously gripping the edge of the quilt.
“You should leave as soon as possible. If Master detects you, I won’t be able to protect you.”
“Miss Shi is worried about me…”
“Think whatever you want, I’m just telling the truth.”
Jiang Liuyue pulled Shi Yining back into her embrace. “Has Miss Shi ever considered the look in that girl’s eyes just now, and her behavior… they clearly hide feelings that shouldn’t be there. If I leave, and Miss Shi remains so defenseless, I fear you’ll be swallowed whole by her sooner or later…”
