- Chapter 30 - Blurred Memories
Shi Yining awoke from a deep slumber, feeling as if a piece of her heart had gone missing.
It felt as though some profoundly important memory had been lost… two blurred figures flickered in her mind from time to time… no, to be precise, there should only be one.
This was because those two figures were strikingly similar; in all likelihood, they were the same person.
Beyond that, there were fragments of broken images.
During an avalanche, that figure had held her tightly in a protective embrace; and beneath the waters of a hot spring, there was the passing of breath to save her life… but she could not recall who that person was, nor could she remember their face…
What… had happened to her?
“Senior Sister, you’re finally awake!” Yu Chang entered the room carrying a bowl of medicine. Seeing the figure on the couch slowly sitting up, an irrepressible joy instantly surfaced in her eyes, and she quickened her pace to the bedside.
Shi Yining stared blankly at the young girl, saying hesitantly, “Junior Sister, I seem to have… forgotten someone very important.”
The hand Yu Chang used to hold the medicine bowl trembled imperceptibly, yet a bright smile broke across her face. “Senior Sister has been in a coma for a long time; it is easy to let your thoughts wander upon waking. This is a medicinal meal I prepared after searching through various prescriptions; it calms the mind, settles the spirit, and strengthens the body. Please drink it while it’s hot.”
“Alright…”
After a moment of silence, Shi Yining took the bowl from her Junior Sister and took a small sip.
Yu Chang watched her with some trepidation. “Senior Sister, how does it taste?”
Shi Yining nodded gently. “It is sweet and sour, without a hint of bitterness. It’s very good.”
Before she fell unconscious, she seemed to have eaten something very bitter. Although she couldn’t remember what it was, she felt an instinctive loathing for it.
By comparison, the medicinal meal her Junior Sister prepared was like nectar from the heavens.
“I’m glad you like it, Senior Sister.”
A faint blush appeared on Yu Chang’s pretty face. “While you were unconscious, I tried making many types of spiritual cuisine and succeeded with quite a few. Drink your medicine first, and I will go prepare them.”
Watching the young girl run out of the room with a cheerful gait, a slight smile unconsciously appeared on Shi Yining’s face.
The confusion she felt upon waking dissipated slightly.
Those blurred memories… she believed that one day, she would be able to find them again…
For several days in a row, Yu Chang prepared various spiritual dishes in ever-changing ways. Shi Yining often heard her Junior Sister’s affectionate calls.
“Senior Sister, this is freshly made almond tofu; I specifically added extra spiritual honey…”
“This is Jade Snow Cake; it’s very soft and chewy. Try some, Senior Sister…”
“Senior Sister, this is Lily Bulb Soup, just simmered…”
Every day, the spiritual meals were different.
From the sweet almond tofu to the refreshing lily soup, and then to the steaming bamboo shoot and black jade broth.
Shi Yining could see that her Junior Sister was very clingy. Aside from preparing meals, she stayed by her side constantly. Even as the night grew late, she refused to leave, pestering Shi Yining to let them sleep together.
No matter how slow she might be, Shi Yining gradually guessed Yu Chang’s feelings.
Her Junior Sister was truly wonderful, caring for her with meticulous devotion. Whenever she noticed Shi Yining’s heart was heavy, she would recount various interesting stories from the sect, doing everything possible to make her happy.
However… the figure that frequently appeared in her mind was not her Junior Sister…
Shi Yining remembered that she had forgotten many important things. Although she couldn’t recall them for now, she was certain that she once had someone she loved.
Given that, how could she accept her Junior Sister’s affection?
To do so would be unfair to both her Junior Sister and the love held deep in her heart.
Shi Yining explicitly rejected her Junior Sister.
But her Junior Sister told her that someone who could be forgotten must have hurt her deeply; the memories were likely filled with pain and were not worth searching for. Forgetting was a blessing, and there was no need to remember at all…
On the sixth day after waking, a bright moon hung high in the sky. Her Junior Sister stayed by her side to watch the moon together.
Her Junior Sister said: I know you cannot accept me right now, Senior Sister. I will wait forever. Please do not feel any psychological burden, nor should you reject my kindness because of this. This is my own choice, and no matter the final result, I accept it willingly.
Her words were filled with profound sincerity.
To say there wasn’t a single flicker of emotion in Shi Yining’s heart would be a lie, but it lasted only an instant. Ultimately, the one occupying her heart was still that blurred figure from the depths of her memory.
She did not know why she had forgotten that person. Whenever she asked related questions, whether it was her Junior Sister or her Master, they would both quickly change the subject…
At noon ten days later, the warm sun filtered through the gaps in the bamboo leaves, casting fragmented shadows upon Shi Yining’s plain white robes.
Currently, she sat on a bamboo chair in front of the house, taking small sips of the peach blossom congee her Junior Sister had handed her.
Yu Chang squatted beside her as obediently as a kitten, her head resting on her hands as she looked up at her, eyes brimming with clear expectation. “Senior Sister, does this new peach blossom congee suit your palate?”
The corners of Shi Yining’s lips curved slightly into a faint but genuine arc. “The sweetness is perfect and the peach fragrance is rich. It is very good.”
Upon hearing this, Yu Chang immediately beamed with joy, her eyes crinkling into crescent moons. “I’m so glad you like it, Senior Sister!”
Shi Yining quietly finished the congee spoonful by spoonful and set the empty bowl aside gently. The sunlight made her feel somewhat languid, while also illuminating the confusion in her heart.
“For some reason, since I woke up, I haven’t even thought about cultivating. You and Master are spoiling me so much; if this continues, I’m afraid I, the Eldest Senior Sister of the Xuanqing Sect, will become a title without substance and be criticized by others.”
“Who dares talk nonsense!” Yu Chang clenched her fists. “I’ll go beat them up immediately!”
Shi Yining was amused by her display and shook her head with a laugh. “You, don’t always be so impulsive, wanting to hit people at every turn.”
“I don’t care!” Yu Chang pursed her lips stubbornly. “Anyway, anyone who speaks ill of Senior Sister, I’ll beat them up!”
Shi Yining felt a warmth in her heart, yet she remained somewhat lost.
“I understand your heart, Junior Sister. However, it is ultimately inappropriate to waste time like this without cultivating. It’s just that, for some reason, every time I try to practice and use my spiritual power, I feel an inexplicable exhaustion and cannot muster any spirit…”
Hearing this, a dense wave of heartache instantly flooded Yu Shang’s eyes. She gently pulled at the woman’s sleeve, her voice soft yet carrying a hidden determination. “Senior Sister, believe me, this is only temporary. You will definitely get better!”
“Junior Sister…” Shi Yining suddenly grabbed her wrist in return. “Can you… can you tell me what exactly happened before I fell unconscious?”
Yu Chang’s gaze suddenly became evasive. She turned her face away unnaturally and stiffly changed the subject. “Senior Sister, the peach blossoms on the back mountain have all bloomed these past few days. They are everywhere and very beautiful. Shall we… shall we go see them together?”
Looking at the girl’s dodging expression, Shi Yining knew she was unwilling to tell the truth. After a long time, she finally turned the question that was about to rise from her throat into a soft sigh and nodded in agreement. “Staying still all day is indeed unhelpful. It would be good to walk around…”
The peach blossoms on the back mountain were in full bloom—pink clouds like rosy mist, layered and folded, exceptionally beautiful.
As Shi Yining approached, a breeze happened to blow past, and the peach grove rustled, raining down a shower of petals. Her blurred thoughts grew unusually calm upon seeing such beauty.
Petals fell from time to time, brushing against their shoulders and hair.
Shi Yining and her Junior Sister walked side-by-side through the grove. As if trying to dispel the previous gloom, Yu Chang pointed enthusiastically at various sights, chatting about the interesting things she had encountered that day.
