- Chapter 56.1 - Will You Marry Me? (1)
Because they were on someone else’s turf, Fú Níng did not go overboard. She asked for it twice and then brought Jiāng Yān out.
Cháo Mù was so mesmerized by Liú Guāng that she was reluctant to return to Mount Sumeru. Jiāng Yān had no choice but to leave her there and return with Fú Níng. No sooner had they stepped into the house than Jiǔ Yè Xī came to beg her to save Chī Jié.
Jiāng Yān hesitated whether she should go. Fú Níng and Jiǔ Yè Xī simultaneously looked at her with pleading, pitiful expressions, as if her refusal to save him would be an unforgivable sin.
“If you want me to save him, you must show some sincerity. Otherwise, why should I go through the trouble of saving him? It would be better to let him die just like this, and the world can be rid of one more demon.”
Fú Níng hooked her sleeve and shook it, saying softly, “Actually, his heart is not bad, and he had no desire for the conflict between the two realms. Everything that happened back then was because I forced him. Please put all the blame on me.”
A glint flashed in Jiāng Yān’s eyes. She pretended to look displeased and said, “You are no different from a mortal now. What can I ask you to do?”
“I will agree to any condition. Can you please save Chī Jié first?”
Fú Níng spoke with such humility that Jiāng Yān felt a little moved. She turned and walked toward the back mountain.
Since coming to Mount Sumeru, Fú Níng had lost the arrogance she possessed in the mortal world and treated her with great caution. This was originally what she had desired, but after a long time, it felt as if something was missing.
Is she a masochist? Jiāng Yān pondered inwardly.
Even on the ice bed, Chī Jié’s condition was not optimistic. The Seven-Leaf Demon Lotus had been in his body for too long and had rooted into his heart meridians. Mèi Lí’s forceful extraction of it was tantamount to ripping out his heart meridians entirely.
Whether a god or a demon, the loss of heart meridians meant certain death, and there was absolutely no way to save him.
Jiāng Yān only needed a glance to know she could not save him. She patted Mèi Lí lightly on the shoulder, her voice filled with regret.
“Be good to him. Try your best to fulfill his wishes. His lifespan is less than ten days.”
The medicine bowl in Mèi Lí’s hand dropped to the ground, his resolute eyes shattering, and he looked completely distraught.
“Divine Venerable, please save him.”
Jiāng Yān did not expect the proud Mèi Lí to kneel before her, his voice trembling as he pleaded.
If you had known this day would come, why did you act as you did? The two of them had hurt each other. What did they gain in the end?
“It’s not that I don’t want to save him, but that I can’t. Do you see the dark mark floating on his forehead? That is a sign of his life slowly depleting. When this black mark fully appears, he will…” His soul will scatter.
As a demon, his only two possible outcomes were endless life or complete annihilation; there was no concept of reincarnation.
Mèi Lí turned his head to look but still could not believe that even Jiāng Yān was helpless. He heavily kowtowed. “Divine Venerable, please think of another way. Whatever method it takes, as long as you can keep his life, I only want him to live.”
Jiāng Yān let out a soft sigh, pricked her fingertip, and fed a drop of her own blood to Chī Jié. The black mark on his forehead faded slightly, but he remained unconscious.
“Are you truly willing to sacrifice anything for him, including your life?”
Mèi Lí answered without hesitation: “I am willing, as long as you can preserve his soul.”
Oh, you foolish child, Jiāng Yān sighed inwardly again. She then reached out and tapped Mèi Lí’s head, extracting half of his divine soul and injecting it into Chī Jié’s body, then using healing spells to fuse his divine soul with Chī Jié’s.
Chī Jié’s eyes were closed, his brows tightly furrowed in intense pain. Mèi Lí was in no better shape; the forcible separation of his divine soul was no different from dying once. His face was covered in sweat, and blood flowed continuously from the corners of his mouth, impossible to wipe away.
“You also need your Vermilion Bird divine blood to serve as an anchor for him, allowing him to enter the cycle of reincarnation. Can you still hold on?”
Seeing his poor condition, Jiāng Yān reminded him.
If his divine power was insufficient, Mèi Lí could very well die in the process of replacing Chī Jié’s blood. This was extremely dangerous.
Mèi Lí wiped the fresh blood from his lips and forced a weak smile. “No problem. Divine Venerable, please proceed.”
Jiāng Yān cast a spell, giving half of his blood to Chī Jié, and then covered Chī Jié’s body with the tens of thousands of years of cold ice, finally letting out a breath of relief.
“Yáo Jī, make a trip to the Heavenly Palace. Tell them that a Divine Monarch here needs to descend to the mortal realm for tribulation, and ask the Star Lord of Destiny to add his name.”
Yáo Jī obeyed the order, carrying the little fox to the Heavenly Palace. Jiāng Yān then raised her hand and gave Mèi Lí a healing spell, allowing him to endure this period.
Having lost half of his divine power and divine blood, strictly speaking, he was no longer a god. In the future, he could no longer stay on Mount Sumeru and would have to find a place to cultivate on his own. Whether he could ascend to godhood again depended on his fortune.
“Mèi Lí, from this day forth, you and Chī Jié will share life. If he is injured or dies, you will also cease to exist. However, he will not be affected by you. Whether you are dead or alive, he will have no feeling whatsoever. He will forget all of this forever and be no different from a mortal. Prepare yourself mentally.”
Mèi Lí pursed his lips, looked at the person covered by the cold ice, and slowly lowered his head.
“This minor god understands. Thank you, Divine Venerable, for your help.”
Jiāng Yān sighed and turned to walk out of the cave. Let them have some time together. After today, the past would be forgotten.
Fú Níng looked at her retreating figure, her gaze lingering. She stepped forward, took Jiāng Yān’s hand, and said in a gentle voice, “I will always stay with you.”
Jiāng Yān looked back at her. She had intended to say something that would hurt Fú Níng, but in the end, she held it back. For some people, simply being together was a luxury. Since they were already together, there was no need to waste their limited time being contrary.
“Do you still remember what I said in the mortal world?”
“I remember. I remember every word you said,” Fú Níng replied, pulling Jiāng Yān into her arms and growing even gentler. “Yān Yān, marry me.”
Jiāng Yān smiled silently, her eyes reflecting the stars. She understands me, indeed. She knows what I wanted to say.
“Alright, I promise you. But we have to settle Mèi Lí’s matter before we talk about ours.”
Fú Níng’s hands, wrapped around Jiāng Yān, were trembling. She couldn’t find the words to express her inner feelings and could only hold Jiāng Yān tighter, as if trying to embed her into her own flesh and blood.
“Good, I’ll listen to you.”
Jiāng Yān broke into a smile, and the mechanical system prompt sounded in her mind:
【Congratulations, Host. The target’s Blackening Value has dropped by ten. The current total Blackening Value is zero.】
Jiāng Yān’s smile grew even more radiant. She looked up, and the sky was clear and bright with boundless blue waves.
Because of her identity as the Divine Monarch of Mount Sumeru, Yáo Jī did not need to report to enter the Heavenly Palace. She went straight to the Star Lord of Destiny’s manor, dragged the Star Lord, who was still fast asleep, out of his covers, and hauled him to Mount Sumeru.
The Star Lord’s eyes were blurred by the wind. He clutched his head and asked, “Divine Monarch, what’s the rush?”
“My Divine Venerable requests your presence. You’ll know when you get there.”
The Star Lord of Destiny was about to say more, but Yáo Jī let go, and he tumbled straight to the ground, legs splayed in the air.
Jiāng Yān looked at the slightly dishevelled Star Lord and feigned anger. “Yáo Jī, didn’t I tell you to just inform the Star Lord? Why did you bring him here?”
Yáo Jī bowed with the fox in her arms and said, “Divine Venerable, forgive me. I truly didn’t know how to explain, so I could only invite the Star Lord here.”
Jiāng Yān still didn’t understand what she meant, but Mèi Lí, dragging his sick body, walked over and knelt directly at her feet, his voice weak and pleading.
“Divine Venerable, please let me enter the cycle of reincarnation with him. I want to protect him.”
Jiāng Yān was stunned for a moment, then immediately understood. She began to admire Yáo Jī’s foresight. Yáo Jī looked at the problem with a longer view than she did and knew that Mèi Lí would surely be unable to leave Chī Jié. That’s why she brought the Star Lord directly. Since he was already here, was it still difficult to add another name to the Book of Destiny?
“Get up first. Don’t let the Star Lord of Destiny laugh at us.”
The Star Lord quickly said, “Divine Venerable, what are you saying? I am a minor immortal. To be able to come to Mount Sumeru is already a great fortune. I absolutely dare not mock the Divine Monarch.”
Jiāng Yān’s eyes darted around. She intentionally adopted a cold attitude. “Entering the cycle of reincarnation is the job of the Ghost Monarch. How he is born and what his fate will be is decided by the Star Lord of Destiny. What’s the use of asking me?”
Mèi Lí turned to look at the Star Lord of Destiny. The Star Lord immediately understood, waved his hand, summoned the Book of Destiny, and handed it to Jiāng Yān, flattering her tremendously. “This is the Book of Destiny. Divine Venerable, you can write whatever you wish. I will go to the Heavenly Emperor to confess my guilt later.”
Are you kidding me? He knew the difference between offending the Chan Yue Divine Venerable and the Heavenly Emperor. The Heavenly Emperor would at most give him a few lashes, but being targeted by the Chan Yue Divine Venerable was more than just a few lashes. Perhaps she’d have him banished to the mortal realm to become a domestic animal or some other strange thing just for entering the Lingxiao Palace with his left foot first.
The Star Lord shivered just thinking about it, and his smile became even more fawning.
Jiāng Yān’s scheme had succeeded, and a glint of cunning flashed in her eyes. She said to Mèi Lí, “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and thank the Star Lord of Destiny.”
Mèi Lí immediately bowed his head and sincerely thanked him. When the Star Lord saw that he was still kneeling, his legs went weak, and he immediately knelt down in front of him. “Divine Monarch, you flatter this minor immortal. It’s nothing but a small favour.”
I’m done for. Will the Chan Yue Divine Venerable hold a grudge and send me to the path of beasts later?
The Star Lord was trembling until Mèi Lí added his and Chī Jié’s names. Only then did he cautiously ask Jiāng Yān how to write their destinies.
Jiāng Yān intended to tease Mèi Lí and personally added a few strokes. When the Star Lord saw it, he immediately exclaimed, expert, and gave a thumbs up.
“As expected of the Divine Venerable, superb!”
Jiāng Yān waved her hand to indicate it was a small matter, then instructed Yáo Jī to take the Star Lord away and entertain him well.
Yáo Jī carried the little fox, who still wanted to watch the excitement, and left the main hall with the Star Lord. Only Jiāng Yān, Fú Níng, and Mèi Lí remained in the hall.
Mèi Lí heavily kowtowed and said to Jiāng Yān, “Thank you, Divine Venerable. Mèi Lí has no way to repay you, so I can only exchange my Divine Monarch position for the Divine Venerable’s. This minor god will be a mortal after entering the cycle of reincarnation and can no longer serve at the Divine Venerable’s side. Please take care, Divine Venerable.”
Jiāng Yān pouted in her heart, thinking, You didn’t serve me much before, and you were so arrogant, always disobedient. Now retribution has come.
However, seeing his pale face and weak body, Jiāng Yān didn’t twist the knife. Besides, the revenge she sought had already been achieved, so she wouldn’t fuss over it.
“I will arrange for someone to take your position. Go in peace. If you still have an immortal destiny after ten thousand years, you may attain godhood again.”
Mèi Lí kowtowed and then left. Fú Níng hugged Jiāng Yān from behind and bit her ear.
“You wrote their fate like that, aren’t you afraid Mèi Lí will go mad?”
Jiāng Yān smiled, her eyes deep. “Who told him to always act like he looks down on everyone? I want him to suffer enough for love and temper his sharp edges.”
When she hadn’t recovered her memories, this guy said that Fú Níng wanted Chan Yue, not Jiāng Yān, which made her very sad. Now that she had the chance, she would let him taste the bitterness of unrequited love as well.
There were many empty spaces in the Book of Destiny, so Jiāng Yān even helped them write the destinies for their remaining nine lives.
Don’t ask why. Just say it’s doing good deeds without leaving a name. She’s the living Lei Feng of Mount Sumeru.
Fú Níng smiled and said “You,” with a doting tone, then pulled Jiāng Yān into the room.
Mèi Lí entered the cold ice cave and looked at Chī Jié sealed in the ice, his eyes darkening.
If he had gone to find him earlier, the outcome would surely not have been this way. If not for the Divine Venerable’s intervention, he would have lost Chī Jié.
This demon, whom he both loved and hated, knew that removing the Demon Lotus would harm his life, yet he did it silently to resolve his resentment. Did he think this would make him happy?
Not happy at all. Instead, he felt he was an idiot. Why gamble with his own life? Even if he won the bet, what would it matter?
Mèi Lí repeatedly pondered the past events. After blaming Chī Jié, he blamed himself, and in the end, all that remained was regret.
After losing his divine power, his body began to perceive hot and cold. The air in the cold ice cave was biting. His limbs were stiff. He sat there for a full afternoon. In the evening, Chī Jié was unsealed from the ice and slowly opened his eyes.
“Mèi Lí, I am sorry for what happened back then. Now that I am a dying man, can you forgive me?”
Mèi Lí said nothing, watching the expectation in his eyes gradually darken. His heart clenched tightly.
It’s not time yet. He couldn’t say he forgave him, or Chī Jié might feel a sense of release and immediately turn into ash.
In the blink of an eye, Chī Jié’s body became transparent. He knew he was about to die. He smiled at Mèi Lí, just like when they first met, when he smiled and said to Mèi Lí, “You little immortal are quite handsome. Interested in coming back to the Demon Realm with me to be the Demon Lord’s wife?”
This time he said nothing, everything was unsaid.
Chī Jié’s body dissipated, and his soul drifted out of the cave. Mèi Lí quickly followed and only stopped when they were outside Mount Sumeru. The two ghost messengers, Bái Hēi Wú Cháng (White and Black Impermanence), saw him and bowed in unison.
“Divine Monarch Mèi Lí, we have come by summon. Since we could not enter Mount Sumeru, we waited outside the mountain.”
Mèi Lí indicated he understood and returned to the Underworld with them.
The Ghost Monarch quickly came out to greet him, treating Chī Jié’s soul with great importance.
“Divine Monarch, please tell me your commands. I will not refuse anything within my power.”
“Ghost Monarch, there is no need to be so polite. I have come with this soul to enter the cycle of reincarnation with him.”
The Ghost Monarch and Black and White Impermanence stared at each other with wide eyes. After a long pause, he said, “Does the Chan Yue Divine Venerable know about the Divine Monarch entering the cycle of reincarnation?”
If that Divine Venerable did not know, he would not dare to casually throw Mèi Lí into the cycle of reincarnation. If the Chan Yue Divine Venerable came to him to demand his return tomorrow and he couldn’t produce him, he feared she would overturn his Underworld.
“The Divine Venerable knows. She even wrote our destinies.”
Upon hearing this, the Ghost Monarch relaxed. He ordered Black and White Impermanence to take Mèi Lí to the path of reincarnation, while he hurriedly checked the Book of Destiny sent down from the Heavenly Palace.
There were only two ordinary names on it; apart from that, it was blank.
The Ghost Monarch didn’t believe it and tried to use his divine power again, but was met with a backlash from the divine power on the book, which bounced him back into his seat. The Book of Destiny immediately closed, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t open it.
“The Chan Yue Divine Venerable sure knows how to have fun,” he lamented, and quickly put the book away, pretending nothing had happened.
Jiāng Yān was originally sitting in the waterside pavilion eating immortal fruit. After sensing the fluctuation of divine power, she smiled faintly.
“It’s a good thing I was prepared, or else this beautiful and tragic love story would have been seen by others.”
Fú Níng quietly added from the side, “It’s a tragically miserable fate, isn’t it? I’ve never seen such a tragic life.”
Jiāng Yān glared at her and threw a fruit at her. “Why do I feel like you’ve been increasingly fond of contradicting me lately? Should I put you in the mortal world too, to go through reincarnation with them?”
“My mistake, my mistake. The Divine Venerable is right. It is a beautiful and tragic love story,” Fú Níng quickly corrected herself, moving closer to Jiāng Yān to massage her legs and shoulders, her attitude the epitome of deference.
Jiāng Yān bit into a fruit, thoroughly enjoying Fú Níng’s flattery.
She was already at a disadvantage in bed, so why shouldn’t she enjoy herself elsewhere?
Fú Níng had her own intentions. If she served Jiāng Yān well, she could smoothly bring up the matter of marriage.
Since Jiāng Yān first mentioned marriage, she had been eager to make it happen. Once it was done, Yān Yān would be all hers.
“Yān Yān, do you still remember what we talked about last time?”
Hearing her tentative voice, Jiāng Yān secretly smiled and asked, “What are you talking about?”
Of course I remember. I don’t have a seven-second memory. But she still needed Fú Níng to bring it up, otherwise, it would seem like she was desperate to marry.
“It’s about getting married.” Fú Níng was a little nervous, clenching her fists. “You said you wanted me to marry you before, and I was already prepared to do so, but I didn’t expect so many things to happen afterward. Now that everything has concluded, should we discuss this matter?”
Jiāng Yān glanced at her, looking unconcerned. “You need to make it clear whether you are marrying me or I am marrying you. If you are marrying me, then you need to prepare the betrothal gifts. With my status, you need at least a thousand chests of rare treasures, a thousand chests of luxurious clothes, a thousand chests of jewelry and accessories, and other miscellaneous items, totalling nine thousand nine hundred chests.”
Fú Níng thought for a moment and said, “That is not difficult. I have some savings in the Demon Realm from these years, but Chī Jié managed all of it. Now that he has entered the cycle of reincarnation, I don’t know where it is stored, so it might take some effort to find it.”
That was the effect Jiāng Yān wanted. She struck while the iron was hot, saying, “Then how long do I have to wait? If it takes too long, I might no longer want to marry.”
“That won’t do! You must marry me!” Fú Níng grew anxious. She immediately hugged Jiāng Yān, nuzzling her neck like she was pouting.
Jiāng Yān remained unmoved and offered a suggestion, “However, if you marry me, you won’t have to worry about any of this. The position of Divine Consort of Mount Sumeru is yours, the entire mountain is yours. How does that sound?”
Fú Níng had already guessed that her lengthy prelude wasn’t just about discussing the dowry and betrothal gifts. A smile flashed in her eyes. “Actually, you don’t need to say so much. Whether I am marrying or being married, as long as it’s you, I don’t care.”
Jiāng Yān raised an eyebrow. “You don’t care even about who is on top?”
Fú Níng said nothing, pressing her down and kissing her, using action to state her answer.
Jiǔ Yè Xī mostly remained in her fox form on Mount Sumeru, so she was unrestricted in where she went and could run around freely.
She had just run out of the corridor when Yáo Jī scooped her up and quickly left with her.
“What happened?” Jiǔ Yè Xī looked bewildered.
Yáo Jī gently stroked her fur, glanced in the direction of the waterside pavilion, and said faintly, “If you had gone over just now, the Divine Venerable would likely have killed you.”
Jiǔ Yè Xī retracted her head, feeling a little lingering fear. Fortunately, Yáo Jī pulled her back in time, or she would be a corpse now.
“Thank you, Divine Monarch. Please put me down. I’ll go play somewhere else.”
