- Chapter 15 - Someone Wants Your Lives
Jiang Yan took out the dagger from her bag, twirled it in her palm, and a bloodthirsty smile appeared on her lips.
It had been a long time since she had used her hands. She would use these few blind fools to test if her skills had regressed.
Jiang Zhen was entangled in a fight with a few bandits when a dagger suddenly flew out from the carriage.
The dagger passed by her cheek with a sharp gust of wind and, without any warning, plunged into the neck of the bandit with the large saber.
He coughed up a mouthful of blood, his eyes wide as he stared at the carriage, and then he fell.
The expressions on the faces of the other four instantly changed drastically. They had to be wary of Jiang Zhen while also worrying about a sneak attack from the person in the carriage. Their formation was immediately thrown into disarray.
Jiang Yan didn’t have the same flashy entrance as Jiang Zhen because she didn’t know how to do a flying leap.
She lifted the curtain, her eyes like frost and snow as she scanned the four men. Then she met Jiang Zhen’s scrutinizing and suspicious gaze and smiled ingratiatingly. “Don’t be afraid, Elder Sister. I’m here to help you.”
Jiang Zhen: “You don’t need to help. I can handle it myself!”
Her voice came from not far away, colder than ice and snow.
Jiang Yan’s step faltered as she got off the carriage, and she almost knelt in the snow.
‘Oh no. I got carried away.’
‘She’s already an insecure and paranoid person. Now I don’t know how to explain this to make her trust me.’
Jiang Zhen turned her head expressionlessly. Her moves became even more lethal. The short sword went straight for their vital points. The four bandits couldn’t resist and immediately knelt to beg for mercy.
“Heroine, spare us! We were forced to do this! We were blind today to offend you. Please forgive us!”
The four men were lined up side by side, their expressions identical.
Jiang Yan thought, ‘It seems they’ve had plenty of practice.’
‘When they encounter someone helpless, they rob them of all their possessions. When they encounter someone powerful, they show weakness and beg for mercy. They’re quite adaptable.’
Jiang Zhen was unmoved. The short sword in her hand sliced across the wrists of the four men, and screams of agony echoed through the sky.
Jiang Yan covered her ears in disgust. She slowly walked to Jiang Zhen’s side after they had screamed enough.
‘This feeling of being taller is really great.’
She no longer had to look up to her.
Jiang Zhen cut off a piece of cloth from the hem of her clothes and meticulously wiped the blood from her short sword.
“From now on, do not do such wicked things again. Otherwise…” She paused, glancing at the bandit lying on the ground with his eyes wide open. “This will be your fate.”
The four bandits’ faces turned pale, and they all promised to turn over a new leaf.
Jiang Zhen had no time to waste on them. She turned around and walked towards the carriage.
The four men became even more terrified.
‘The other one only looks fierce, but this one is truly deadly!’
Jiang Yan took a step forward, and the four men were so scared they fell backward, their voices filled with terror.
“Heroine, spare us! Heroine, spare us!”
Jiang Yan was helpless. She pointed at herself. “Am I that scary?”
The four bandits: “…”
“I just want to remind you to be good people. If you don’t listen,” Jiang Yan made a motion of slitting her throat. “Do you understand what I mean?”
One bandit fainted, and the other three trembled.
Jiang Yan thought, ‘It must be because Jiang Zhen was too fierce just now. Why else would they be so scared?’
Back at the carriage, the two sisters’ gazes clashed. Neither of them spoke first. The horse, however, seemed to be unhappy with them wasting time and let out a huff.
“Get in the carriage.” Jiang Zhen said concisely.
Jiang Yan walked over and wrapped her arms around her, whining pitifully. “Waaah, you scared me. They were so scary, and Elder Sister didn’t even care about me.”
Jiang Zhen: “…”
‘Have I been too nice lately? This little thing is getting more and more presumptuous.’
“Let go.”
“No, unless you smile at me.”
Jiang Yan started to act shamelessly.
Their relationship had finally gotten a little closer, and she didn’t want it to go back to how it was before.
Jiang Zhen’s eyes flickered. She concealed the coldness in her gaze, and her tone softened.
“If we don’t hurry, we’ll have to spend the night in the carriage.”
Jiang Yan reluctantly let go and climbed into the carriage.
Jiang Zhen watched her clumsy movements, and her eyes darkened.
‘She clearly knows martial arts, but she’s pretending to be weak. What is she trying to do?’
The journey was silent. When dusk fell, the two arrived in Jiucheng.
Jiucheng was not far from Jingcheng, but it was peaceful here, with no sign of war.
The two found an inn nearby and, at Jiang Yan’s request, took one room.
Jiang Zhen took the bag and went upstairs, seemingly accustomed to her unreasonable demands.
As Jiang Yan walked upstairs, she felt someone watching her. She looked back but saw that everyone was drinking and chatting, and there was nothing unusual.
She remained vigilant. At night, she placed a chair by the door. Sure enough, close to midnight, a slight noise came from the door.
She suddenly opened her eyes, glanced at Jiang Zhen, who was sleeping soundly on the inside of the bed, and quietly got up to grab her short sword.
The door was opened, and two whispers came in:
“Big Brother, I don’t think that little woman is a good person. Do we really have to do this?”
“If you’re scared, then go. It’s not too late to back out now. They’re offering a hundred thousand taels to capture them. We have to seize the opportunity.”
Jiang Yan heard something from their conversation and was in no hurry to deal with them.
‘Who is “they”? Why are they offering a reward to capture them? Has someone found out that they left the capital?’ Suspicion swirled in Jiang Yan’s mind.
The two men were cautious. To avoid any accidents, they released some foul-smelling sleeping smoke.
Only after the smoke filled the entire room did they slowly walk forward.
Jiang Yan was sitting on the edge of the bed. Her face was deathly pale in the moonlight, which scared the two men so much they screamed and recoiled.
“Stop yelling! With a little courage like that, you’re trying to be thieves? How embarrassing!”
As soon as she spoke, the two “thieves” rushed forward regardless. She gave each of them a crisp, loud slap, leaving them completely dumbfounded.
After a while, the younger one said to the older one, “Big Brother, this is not what you told me.”
“Big Brother” was also feeling frustrated. He said angrily, “Shut up!”
Jiang Yan walked to the table and sat down, pouring herself a cup of tea. “Tell me, who sent you? Keep your voices down. If you wake my elder sister, I’ll cut off your balls!”
The two men immediately covered their groins. The younger one stammered, “We, we don’t know. Someone from the capital sent a wanted notice, and they want your lives.”
‘The capital…’
Jiang Yan frowned, trying to think of who it could be.
The General’s Manor had always been neutral and didn’t have many enemies. The only recent conflict was with Liu Feng, but he would never have the guts to do something like this.
This meant there was a hidden enemy she didn’t know about.
“Please spare us. We were forced to do this. We were originally honest farmers, but someone stole our land. We would never have gone down this path if we didn’t have to.”
Jiang Yan looked at the two men and they didn’t seem like professional criminals. Afraid of disturbing Jiang Zhen, she let them go, but only after they promised to find out who “they” were.
After a delay, she felt sleepy. She turned back to go to sleep, and a pale face was right in front of her. Her soul instantly left her body.
“Holy shit! You scared the hell out of me!”
