What to Do If Beta Cannot Be Marked? - Chapter 48.1
Those who should have dispersed back to their classes, and those who hadn’t yet managed to do so, all stopped in their tracks.
People far from Class 10 Senior High’s territory didn’t know what was happening there, but those in front acted as messengers.
Those voices traveled from one mouth to another person’s mind, then passed down through that same mouth.
Over and over again.
“Holy shit, it’s Lu Zhi he rejected Chi Jinxian!”
“And the rejection was brutal.”
“How brutal?”
“He said Betas are disgusting.”
“Waited all this time thinking we wouldn’t see Chi Jinxian get utterly rejected, but graduation gives us a closing ceremony shocker. Anyway honestly, Lu Zhi is pretty messed up too.”
“…”
Chi Jinxian still stood there, unable to comprehend, he.
“Damn it, Lu Zhi! You fucking asshole, bang !” Suddenly, before anyone could react, a figure burst through the crowd toward Lu Zhi, grabbed his collar, and punched him!
The sound alone was painful to hear.
Lu Zhi’s face snapped to the side. He didn’t fight back.
Qi Suiyi’s chest heaved uncontrollably with rage. Seeing the person before him in such a state, the whites of his eyes were streaked with red from fury.
Immediately, his clenched fist came down again, and Lu Zhi still didn’t dodge.
Within seconds, the scene turned into a one-sided beating.
Qi Suiyi swung his fists while snarling, “You bastard! How disgusting do you have to be to pull such a shitty stunt?!”
“Say something! Cat got your tongue? Weren’t you so talkative just now?!”
” Xiao Sui, Xiao Sui.” As Qi Suiyi was about to throw a fourth punch, Chi Jinxian finally snapped out of it and rushed over to pull his arm.
Qi Suiyi shoved him away, saying, “Don’t stop me!”
“Xiao Sui, let go.”
Amid the chaos, Jiang Jin finally rushed over from the back of the class. Reaching them, he quickly grabbed Lu Zhi’s shoulder and pulled him back, freeing him from Qi Suiyi’s grip on his collar.
He said, “Qi Suiyi, let’s talk this out properly.” Then he turned to Lu Zhi and scolded him sternly, “Do you even know what kind of nonsense you’re spouting?”
“I have nothing to fucking say to him!”
Qi Suiyi tried to charge forward again but was yanked back by Chi Jinxian, who wrapped his arms around his waist. “Uncle! Uncle! It’s the last day of school don’t get a demerit because of this. Calm down, don’t fight, I’m begging you.”
“The teachers and principal are coming, Uncle, I can’t hold you back don’t fight.”
There was a disparity in strength between Alphas and Betas. To restrain the enraged Qi Suiyi, Chi Jinxian’s hands and wrists, tightly wrapped around him, showed bulging blue veins and strained tendons.
Qi Suiyi took a few deep breaths and stopped advancing toward Lu Zhi, staying put.
“Are you still going to associate with him?” Qi Suiyi looked down, his face cold as he asked Chi Jinxian.
Chi Jinxian’s lips moved, but in the end, he closed them without uttering a word.
Qi Suiyi let out a cold laugh, forcibly pried Chi Jinxian’s arms from around him, and declared harshly, “Then one of us has to die today.”
Terrified, Chi Jinxian tightened his hold. “No, don’t!”
“I won’t associate with him anymore, I won’t. Uncle, we still have to go home today don’t make me go home alone.”
Chi Jinxian looked up at him, almost pleadingly, and said, “Please don’t fight anymore.”
The Dean of Students noticed the situation in time and rushed over, dispersing the crowd and taking the troublemakers back to the office.
Since it was the last day for the senior high school students on campus not necessarily after the college entrance exams, but broadly speaking, once they left school today, it would be almost the same as after the exams First Interstellar Alliance High School would become their alma mater, a place they had once attended, not their current school.
Although the incident, happening in front of the entire school, was quite serious, all the teachers gathered to discuss it and felt that this was the most critical period, so they didn’t mention any disciplinary records.
Moreover, Chi Jinxian and the other students directly promised to leave school and go home soon, ensuring no further fights would occur.
After much deliberation, the Dean of Students personally escorted them to the school gate, watching as they went their separate ways and wouldn’t cross paths again, before turning back.
That day, two major events at First Interstellar Alliance High School were hotly discussed by everyone.
The first was Chi Jinxian’s rejection.
The second was that Qi Suiyi turned out to be Chi Jinxian’s uncle.
While watching the drama, Chi Yuan Shen’s name was brought up. Although what happened that day was explosive, it only spread within the school by then, the senior high school students had already gone home, and none of the involved parties were present.
In other places, people didn’t discuss it as freely, given Qi Suiyi and Chi Jinxian’s backgrounds; anyone with sense wouldn’t rush to cause trouble.
But Chi Jinxian’s “joke” had truly spread, known to all the teachers and students. Without even trying to find out, he had already become a laughingstock in Lu Zhi’s eyes.
His pursuit of Lu Zhi began at the first flag-raising ceremony at First Interstellar Alliance High School, and Lu Zhi’s rejection of him ended at the last flag-raising ceremony at First Interstellar Alliance High School.
It seemed to have a clear beginning and end, but the outcome was lamentable.
There was no possibility for them anymore.
“I told you there was a reason I couldn’t stand that jerk, but you just wouldn’t listen, acting like your eyes were glued shut and always sticking close to him,” Qi Suiyi was still fuming on the way back, chattering nonstop as he walked side by side with Chi Jinxian.
Even an hour after the incident, his face still bore the flush of anger.
“Ah, stop scolding me, I get it,” Chi Jinxian reached out to pat his back soothingly and said, “Don’t be angry, it’s not a big deal.”
Hearing this, Qi Suiyi widened his eyes in disbelief and said, “This isn’t a big deal? Then what is a big deal, Chi Jinxian?!”
“No,” Qi Suiyi was exasperated by his attitude and asked, “Aren’t you even angry?”
Chi Jinxian lowered his eyes, looking as if he were attentively listening to a lecture. After a moment, he murmured softly, “Why should I be angry?”
After the flag-raising ceremony, the early morning sun had turned into the midday sun, hanging high overhead and appearing somewhat small.
It seemed higher, and thus farther from people.
The rays of light fell, piercing through the bangs and long eyelashes of Chi Jinxian’s lowered head, making him appear almost translucent.
Seeing him like this, Qi Suiyi felt a surge of anger. For a moment, he wanted to direct the punches he had just thrown at Lu Zhi’s face toward Chi Jinxian instead, hoping to knock some sense into him.
“Can’t you have a little more self-respect? How can someone be so lacking in ambition?!”
“It’s not that I lack ambition,” Chi Jinxian said, noticing Qi Suiyi’s growing agitation. He lifted his gaze calmly, trying to soothe him, and explained seriously, “From the very first day I started pursuing him, I never expected him to like me back. That would be emotional blackmail, and my dad never taught me to act that way. Besides, no relationship is built on the idea that just because I like someone, they must like me back.”
Qi Suiyi frowned disapprovingly but let him continue.
Chi Jinxian shifted his gaze slightly and lowered his voice. “If he likes me, that would be the best outcome for me something I’ve always dreamed of. But if he doesn’t well, that’s only natural. Why should I be angry?”
The two of them walked along the road, carrying their backpacks. It was the day they were leaving school, and Chi Jinxian felt a dull ache in his shoulders, perhaps from carrying too many things home.
He adjusted his backpack straps, trying to find a more comfortable position.
After a moment of silence, he murmured, “He just doesn’t like me, that’s all.”
“But that doesn’t give him the right to be such a jerk and say those things!” Qi Suiyi glared, his eyes wide with frustration.
“He was making fun of you! Didn’t you hear him?! Do I need to repeat it to remind you?!”
“Please, don’t remind me,” Chi Jinxian replied quickly, his words rushed. He opened and closed his mouth several times, as if suddenly at a loss for what to say next.
Qi Suiyi didn’t want to argue anymore. Fuming, he quickened his pace and said, “I’ve already talked to my dad. I’ll be staying at your place until the college entrance exams.”
“I’m done talking to you. You have way too many twisted excuses. I’m going home right now to tell Third Brother and Brother Yuan!”
The mention of telling their parents made Chi Jinxian genuinely panic. He hurried to catch up, grabbing Qi Suiyi’s arm. “Uncle, Uncle, please don’t! Don’t tell my dad and the others. This is just something from our school days. Involving the adults? How childish can you be?”
Qi Suiyi shook off his arm and broke into a run. Chi Jinxian chased after him, pleading as he ran.
He must have called out “Uncle” countless times along the way.
As they neared home and Chi Jinxian realized his pleas were falling on deaf ears, he shouted, “Qi Suiyi, if you dare say anything to my dad, I’ll tell Grandpa that you hit me!”
At that, Qi Suiyi stopped in his tracks, turned around, and pointed at himself in disbelief. “When did I ever hit you?”
“You did hit me,” Chi Jinxian retorted, ignoring him as he strode past toward the villa.
Qi Suiyi stared at his retreating back, gritting his teeth and nodding. “Fine. You win.”
No matter how big a stir school matters caused, as long as they weren’t serious enough to make Alliance news, no one would discuss them on public platforms.
The commotion remained confined to the school and its forums.
Parents, for the most part, only cared about their own children. They rarely paid attention to the romantic entanglements or disputes that happened at school the day before.
So if Qi Suiyi didn’t say anything, Yuan Si Bai and the others would never know the cruel words Lu Zhi had said to Chi Jinxian in front of the entire school.
But Yuan Si Bai could tell something was wrong.
During the few days off before the college entrance exams, Chi Jinxian ate and drank as usual, and fooled around with Qi Suiyi as always, seemingly without any abnormality.
But he never once mentioned Lu Zhi’s name again.
It was as if this person was suddenly being withdrawn from his life, completely different from before when he would come home and immediately talk about “Brother Lu” or “my brother.”
On the third evening of the break, Yuan Si Bai first served Qi Suiyi his meal, then served Chi Jinxian.
When Chi Jinxian stood up and carefully took his bowl with both hands, Yuan Si Bai called out, “An An.”
“Huh?” Chi Jinxian had just picked up his chopsticks. Hearing this, he looked up and said, “What’s up, Dad?”
His bright eyes stared unblinkingly at the other person, as if he were unconsciously nervous.
As if he knew he was about to be questioned about something.
“Nothing,” Yuan Si Bai said, seeming to notice this. He smiled to reassure him before continuing, “I just wanted to ask if something happened at school before the break?”
“Huh? What?” Chi Jinxian’s grip on his chopsticks tightened, stiffening slightly. At the same time, his eyes instantly darted toward Qi Suiyi.
Sensing that inquiring gaze, Qi Suiyi nearly choked on his food. He hurriedly waved his hands and opened his mouth to speak, but when he saw Yuan Si Bai also looking at him, he choked again and feigned calm as he said, “I’ve been with you the whole time these past few days.”
“Your dad is asking you, why are you looking at your uncle?” Chi Sui interjected, right on the heels of Qi Suiyi’s explanation.
Chi Jinxian obediently averted his gaze and muttered softly, “Nothing happened.”
“Qi Suiyi, you tell us,” Chi Sui directly tossed the question to Qi Suiyi.
The latter made a pained face and waved his hands. “My nephew’s bad mood is his problem. What’s the use of asking me? How would I know?”
“I don’t know.”
Chi Sui said, “I’ll give you a million.”
Qi Suiyi: “…”
“Two million.”
Just as the person surnamed Qi was about to open his mouth and yield, Chi Jinxian abruptly stood up from his chair, covering Qi Suiyi’s mouth and hitting him, exasperated. “Wake up! Your dad is Chi Yuan Shen, way richer than Chi Sui!”
Chi Sui: “…”
Chi Sui immediately raised his chopsticks as if to hit someone. “You little brat, are you trying to rebel?”
Yuan Si Bai stopped him with a mix of amusement and exasperation, pulling Chi Jinxian back to his seat and telling him to stop covering Qi Suiyi’s mouth he was nearly suffocating him.
“He had a falling out with Lu Zhi!” As soon as he was free, Qi Suiyi blurted out between gasps for air.
Both adults paused.
Yuan Si Bai asked softly, “What happened?”
“I don’t know, but they had a falling out and won’t have anything to do with each other anymore,” Qi Suiyi said stubbornly. “That’s all.”
Chi Jinxian sat in his seat, head bowed.
Yuan Si Bai looked at him, his brow slightly furrowed, his tone gentle and coaxing as he called out, “An An.”
“Mm,” Chi Jinxian responded.
For a moment, it was unclear whether he was answering Yuan Si Bai’s soft call or agreeing with what Qi Suiyi had said.
Yuan Si Bai said nothing more and quietly finished the meal with the others at the table.
Half an hour later, Chi Sui got up to clear the table, Qi Suiyi went upstairs to his room, and Chi Jinxian remained seated in the living room.
He held a pillow in his arms, staring straight ahead at the television.
He knew Yuan Si Bai had something to say to him.
Sure enough, after another ten minutes or so, Chi Sui finished up in the kitchen, and Yuan Si Bai brought over two glasses of milk.
He handed one to Chi Jinxian, and after the latter took it, placed the other on the coffee table, saying, “Take this upstairs to your uncle later.”
“Okay,” Chi Jinxian nodded, responding obediently.
“Can you talk to me now?” Yuan Si Bai sat down beside him and asked softly.
Chi Sui, who had emerged from the kitchen, became an invisible presence, sitting on the nearby sofa with his laptop open to work, seemingly uninterested in joining their conversation.
Chi Jinxian turned his head to glance at Yuan Si Bai, then lowered his gaze. After a long pause, he finally spoke: “I don’t know what to say.”
“It’s just Lu-ge and I aren’t really suited for each other.”
As he said this, his fingers unconsciously played with a corner of the pillow.
The high-quality fabric was already crumpled from his grip.
Yuan Si Bai watched him for a moment, then reached out and gently squeezed the pillow in his arms, saying, “Xiao An, I never told you that you and Lu Zhi knew each other when you were kids.”
He seemed to be leading into something, starting with a story from long ago, but Chi Jinxian said, “I know.”
This surprised Yuan Si Bai, who asked in return, “You know?”
“Yeah.”
Then, Chi Jinxian briefly summarized the matter.
After a moment of slight surprise, Yuan Si Bai chuckled understandingly and said, “When you were six and in first grade, you saw Lu Zhi and insisted on chasing after him, calling him ‘brother.'”
Hearing this, though he still couldn’t recall the memory, Chi Jinxian could almost picture the scene. He scratched his head sheepishly.
“But after the incident when you were seven, your condition wasn’t great, so your dad and I transferred you to another school,” Yuan Si Bai continued. “From then until middle school, you and Lu Zhi never saw each other again, and I never mentioned it.”
“You were so lively and famous in high school within just a few days of starting school, your dad was called in.” As if recalling how bewildered Chi Sui had looked three years ago when summoned to the school, Yuan Si Bai couldn’t help but chuckle. “But when you came back and told me you wanted to pursue Lu Zhi, aside from being shocked, my main feeling was astonishment.”
“Astonished that the two of you could have such fate.”
Chi Jinxian felt the same way. It seemed as though Lu Zhi had an innate, irresistible allure for him.
Making him feel fond at first sight as a child, and still feeling fond at first sight as he grew up.
Even if he couldn’t remember, his affection remained.
And it grew deeper with each passing year.
“Lu Zhi is a good kid,” Yuan Si Bai said.
Chi Jinxian lifted his eyes to look at him, only to hear his father continue, “But Xiao An, he’s an Alpha.”
“Honestly, it’s not really appropriate to say this, and it’s quite subjective, but the truth is, Alphas and Omegas are truly compatible. Their pheromones attract each other, making them far more suited than Betas.”
