What to Do If Beta Cannot Be Marked? - Chapter 47.2
But he didn’t wait for Lu Zhi to return after his Heat Period. Instead, during the third class break, Jiang Jin rushed anxiously to his classroom, grabbed his arm without a word, and pulled him along as they ran.
He urgently said to him: “Cash, come with me!”
Chi Jinxian let out a surprised “Huh?” but before he could even ask half a question, he was forced to follow him out of the classroom.
Jiang Baixiao, who had just finished getting water and was about to return to his seat, nearly collided with them and was so startled that he spilled almost half the water in his cup.
“Brother Jiang, Brother Jiang, what’s going on? Slow down a bit.” Chi Jinxian was pulled along as they started descending the school building stairs. His legs barely obeyed him, and he nearly twisted his ankle and tumbled down the stairs.
Fortunately, Jiang Jin caught him in time.
“Can’t slow down. Lu Zhi is about to beat Lu Wan to death!” Once Chi Jinxian steadied himself, Jiang Jin grabbed him again and continued running, explaining as they went, “Uncle Lu can’t stop him, no one can stop him. You go and try!”
Chi Jinxian’s expression turned stern. “What?!”
“I already asked your homeroom teacher for leave in advance. Just come with me,” Jiang Jin said, speaking rapidly. “I don’t know the specifics either. Even if you ask me, I won’t know. It was Lu Wan’s stepfather who called me, saying that since Lu Zhi and I grew up together, I should go and control him. But how could I possibly have that ability?!”
“You might be able to manage it!”
As soon as they exited the school building, a car pulled up from the southern road.
Jiang Jin opened the car door and shoved Chi Jinxian inside. Before even getting in himself, he instructed the driver: “To Uncle Lu’s house.”
Fifteen minutes later, the two of them rushed together toward the Lu residence it was Lu Zisheng’s home, not Lu Zhi’s.
“Ahhh, no Lu Zhi, Lu Zhi, you’ll kill him! Stop! Stop ”
Before even entering the living room, just stepping into the yard, a heart-wrenching cry could be heard with chilling clarity.
Lu Zisheng’s furious, restraining voice followed immediately: “Lu Zhi! His leg is already broken, what more do you want?!”
“I want him dead.” A violent crashing sound echoed, as if something heavy had struck human flesh. Lu Zhi’s voice was hoarse.
“Then you’ll go to jail!” Lu Zisheng roared.
Lu Zhi paid no attention, as if he couldn’t hear. He tightly gripped a wooden club resembling a mace, and with another swing, he struck Lu Wan again.
Lu Wan lay face down on the ground, unable to move. His white shirt was soaked with blood, and the flesh beneath must have been too gruesome to look at. He made no sound; if not for his open, tear-filled eyes, anyone glancing over would have thought he was already dead.
Lu Zisheng rushed over and tried to restrain Lu Zhi with both hands, but it was useless.
Two Alpha pheromones clashed fiercely in the living room. As the father, Lu Zisheng clearly had the power to suppress Lu Zhi, but Lu Zhi showed no fear.
If he said he wanted Lu Wan dead, he truly meant it.
Ai Duoyan knelt beside Lu Wan, shielding him with his own body, sobbing uncontrollably. The visible skin on his face and body also bore clear signs of injury.
Ai Duoyan repeated over and over: “He was wrong. I apologize on his behalf, but if you kill him, you won’t survive either. Lu Zhi, please calm down.”
Lu Zhi shook off Lu Zisheng’s restraint and said, “Then let’s die together.”
As he spoke, the wooden stick in his hand was raised again, and judging by its trajectory, it was aimed at the head this time.
“Lu-ge ” Chi Jinxian ran into the living room and called out.
All of Lu Zhi’s movements abruptly halted. After a moment of stillness, he finally turned to look toward the source of the voice.
Due to his Heat Period, his condition was far from normal. Now, with his destructive urges provoked and suppressed by a much stronger Alpha’s pheromones, Lu Zhi was no longer in a rational state.
He stared almost dazedly as Chi Jinxian moved closer and closer to him, the bloodshot whites of his eyes seeming to fade slightly.
When the person finally stood right before him and called out, “Brother,” again.
“Xiao Chi?” Lu Zhi’s voice was soft and hoarse, barely audible as an intimate murmur.
At that moment, Jiang Jin, who was nearby, assessed the situation and coldly uttered, “Uncle Lu,” with downcast eyes.
Then he said to Lu Zhi, “Do you really want to go to jail?”
Lu Zhi gazed at Chi Jinxian for a long time without speaking.
And the next moment, two heavy, consecutive “thuds!” were heard. The object in Lu Zhi’s hand fell, and he himself quickly collapsed.
He was already completely exhausted; his murderous intent had only been sustained by sheer willpower.
Now that the person he most wanted to see had arrived, his rationality pieced itself together, if only barely.
“Brother Lu!”
“Lu Zhi!”
“Xiao Zhi.”
The living room descended into chaos as everyone rushed to check on him.
Just then, the sound of an ambulance echoed outside the villa, Ai Duoyan had called for one earlier. He had also wanted to call the police but was stopped by Lu Zisheng.
At the hospital, one of the two doctors treating the Lu family’s son explained Lu Wan’s condition to Lu Zisheng and couldn’t help but frown, saying, “Who could be so brutal? They might as well have killed him outright and spared him this suffering.”
Lu Zisheng didn’t respond. Ai Duoyan leaned against the wall, covering his mouth as he wept.
Then the other doctor examined Lu Zhi’s condition. After confirming with Lu Zisheng that he was Lu Zhi’s father, he spoke with a serious tone, “The child is in his Heat Period today. The injection hasn’t even taken full effect yet, and you all went and provoked him like that. The Heat Period is the most vulnerable time for an Alpha, and you used pheromones to suppress him so harshly, just that alone would have been enough to land him in the hospital without any additional stimulation. Couldn’t whatever it is wait until after his Heat Period is over?”
Doctors witness all kinds of injuries and illnesses, but when faced with parental negligence, their human instinct to blame is inevitably stirred.
Still, this was ultimately someone else’s family matter. After saying his piece, the doctor fell silent, only furrowing his brows and adding, “Wait for updates,” before walking away.
Ai Duoyan’s sobs gradually quieted.
Lu Zisheng stood silently in place, seemingly unsure where to direct his attention.
Chi Jinxian and Jiang Jin were, after all, outsiders, and given the dire circumstances, they couldn’t bring themselves to ask what had happened.
As the sky grew darker, Chi Sui and Yuan Si Bai came to pick up Chi Jinxian after learning where he was.
After a brief exchange with Lu Zisheng, Chi Sui said, “General Lu, Yuan Yuan and I will take our Xiao An home now. Once your Xiao Zhi wakes up, I’ll have him come over.”
Lu Zisheng replied, “Mm. Sorry to trouble Jinxian with worry.”
Chi Jinxian thought he would soon see Lu Zhi again, to comfort and accompany him.
But from that day on, throughout the rest of his senior year of high school, Chi Jinxian never had direct contact with Lu Zhi again.
Their relationship seemed to have suddenly reverted to when they first met, Chi Jinxian desperately chasing after Lu Zhi’s footsteps, while Lu Zhi never spared him a second glance.
On Saturday and Sunday, Chi Jinxian went to the hospital to visit Lu Zhi. On the first day, Lu Zisheng told him that Lu Zhi hadn’t woken up yet, and his condition was still unstable, so it was better not to see him for now.
By the time he went again the next day, Lu Zhi had already been discharged from the hospital and returned to his own home.
When the Heat Period arrived, even if one didn’t need to take a full week off, they still had to stay at home for four or five days.
This was to ensure the Heat Period would truly pass without any unexpected incidents.
After being discharged, Lu Zhi continued to take time off and stayed at home, not attending school.
Chi Jinxian went to see him after school, but Fang Shou stopped him at the door, saying, “Young Master Chi, our young master is still in his Heat Period. Please wait until he returns to school to speak with him. He’s fine now.”
Chi Jinxian had no choice but to leave.
Over the past few days, he didn’t know how others felt, but for Chi Jinxian, it was pure torment.
He was worried about Lu Zhi. Since he couldn’t see him in person, he sent messages and made phone calls. But it was as if Lu Zhi had no hands or eyes during his Heat Period he didn’t reply to messages, let alone answer calls.
On Wednesday, after one of his classes ended, Chi Jinxian ran into Jiang Jin in the hallway and casually asked, “Brother Jiang, do you know what happened between my brother and Lu Wan now? I can’t get in touch with my brother.”
“Huh? He hasn’t replied to you?” After receiving a confirmation, Jiang Jin fell silent for a moment, furrowing his brows before saying, “He uprooted Lu Zhi’s roses.”
Chi Jinxian whispered, “What?” Then, realizing the implication, he hurriedly asked, “How many did he pull out?”
Hearing this, Jiang Jin’s frown deepened. “All of them.”
“Xiao Zhi, come back inside. You know how difficult it is to grow fiery red roses compared to other varieties.” Fang Shou stood outside the Glass Flower Gallery, trying to persuade him. “These roses are all dead If you still want them, I’ll order a batch of seedlings.”
Lu Zhi knelt in the rose garden, using his hands to replant the roses one by one. All ten of his fingers were covered in soil, and the backs of his hands were marked with tiny scratches, left by the thorns of the dead fiery red roses.
Yet he seemed completely unaware, continuing to work diligently, bit by bit.
But the roses he was replanting had long since withered. A few might still be struggling to survive, but it was clear at a glance that they would die in a few days anyway.
Across this vast Rose Manor, with over a thousand rose bushes, not a single one had survived.
“Xiao Zhi.”
As if he couldn’t hear, Lu Zhi kept his head down, focused on his task.
Suddenly, a flicker of light cast shadows across the Glass Flower Gallery. Lu Zhi paused his digging and looked up.
The weather had been poor these past few days, and today was even worse the sky was filled with dark clouds.
Amid the thick layers of clouds, a blinding flash of lightning flickered, followed closely by a low rumble of thunder.
Soon after, raindrops as large as beans began to pound heavily against the Glass Flower Gallery, dirtying the clean, transparent panes.
It became difficult to see the scenery outside the courtyard.
But Lu Zhi seemed to see his younger self in that moment.
That day, he had been waiting in his usual spot for Chi Jinxian, waiting for his rose.
He waited and waited, but the little rose didn’t appear quickly. Instead, a very strange adult approached him, picked him up without a word, and carried him away.
At that moment, little Chi Jinxian happened to be running toward him, because the daily scenes were so similar, adults sometimes let their guard down. Yuan Si Bai wasn’t present at the time, having stepped away briefly.
He shouted, “Brother!”
The person forcibly dragging little Lu Zhi saw Chi Jinxian and suddenly laughed. He strode over and, just as he had roughly dragged Lu Zhi away, used his other hand to grab Chi Jinxian.
Little Lu Zhi was terrified and cried, “Let me go! Don’t touch him, don’t touch him! Let go ”
Little Chi Jinxian didn’t understand what was happening, but the adult’s roughness hurt his arm, and his cheerful smile instantly turned to tears.
He cried out, “Brother, it hurts.”
“Let him go! My father is Lu Zisheng, he’s a General!” Little Lu Zhi clenched his fists and struck out, his voice piercing, “If you take me away, my father won’t let you off!”
At these words, the man abruptly halted and asked strangely, “Your father is Lu Zisheng?”
The next moment, without waiting for a response, the man seemed intimidated and immediately released him, instead scooping up Chi Jinxian and quickly walking away.
Lu Zhi chased after him, but couldn’t catch up, crying in fear. As he ran, he repeatedly shouted, “Let him go. Xiao Chi You can’t take him away. His father is Uncle Chi Sui. Let him go.”
He thought that, just like when he revealed his own background, the man would be frightened.
But upon hearing Chi Sui’s name, the man suddenly turned back, glanced at him with a laugh, and said:
“I know.”
“Boom.”
Another clap of thunder echoed from the horizon. Lu Zhi blinked lightly, dispelling the light that had just pierced deep into his pupils.
His eyelashes lowered halfway as he resumed working with his hands.
He wanted to restore Rose Manor to its original state.
But the flowers were dead, and the manor could only cease to exist.
Lu Zhi still remembered returning during his Heat Period and seeing his rose garden in complete disarray. At that moment, he couldn’t recall anything only one thought remained.
He wanted to kill that person.
After confirming who had come to the villa, Lu Zhi indeed returned home with a weapon. He gave no chance for explanations and struck the person down.
Lu Wan wanted to send him to the hospital, wanted him dead, but his calculations weren’t precise enough. Even when provoked like this during his Heat Period, fueled by hatred, Lu Zhi could render him powerless to fight back.
Lu Wan couldn’t evade the beating and could only crawl on the ground, but still couldn’t escape. He had no choice but to weep and admit his mistake, begging for mercy.
In the end, he was beaten so severely he could barely feel the pain. The blows landed on his body, and he could only cry, no longer able to scream.
Ai Duoyan rushed to protect his only son, his face pale with fear.
Before Lu Zisheng returned, he screamed bitterly at Lu Zhi, “Aren’t those roses just given to you by Chi Sui’s son? For some flowers, you’d kill someone? Your father isn’t even that powerful, is he!”
“You Lu family Alphas are something else. One keeps saying Betas have no scent, yet he brought me back because of a child, and after bringing me back, he still fooled around outside.”
“And the other,” Ai Duoyan wept while shielding Lu Wan, his words still sharp. He stared fearfully at Lu Zhi and said, “Hated Betas since childhood, found them disgusting after all, Betas can sleep with anyone, since they have no pheromones. But now you’re beating your brother to death over a Beta Ah!”
Ai Duoyan clutched his arm, his lips trembling with pain, then suddenly let out a cold laugh and said, “Who else can you blame for not being able to protect what’s yours? When you were a child, didn’t you have a playmate? I heard someone wanted to kidnap you to change your gender, and someone took your place, right?”
He stared at Lu Zhi with almost venomous intensity, each word sharp enough to kill: “Now you can’t even protect a single Rose Manor. You’re useless and still dragging others down with you.”
Lu Zhi’s eyes grew increasingly bloodshot, as if he had completely lost his mind.
He said, “What did you say?” A moment later, as if snapping back to reality, he asked, “How do you know about that?”
“Hah, no matter what, Lu Zisheng and I are married. Shouldn’t I know?”
Lu Zhi shut his eyes tightly, then his gaze fell upon the knife in the fruit tray on the coffee table.
Noticing his line of sight, Ai Duoyan finally felt genuine fear. He hurriedly dragged Lu Wan, trying to hide: “What are you doing? What do you think you’re doing? Lu Zhi!”
Just as Lu Zhi was about to grasp the knife handle, Lu Zisheng arrived in time to stop him.
The rain grew heavier, streaming down the slanted glass panels of the Glass Flower Gallery in rapid, distinct lines.
Fang Shou could no longer bear to watch. He crouched down and gently tugged at Lu Zhi’s hand, still buried in the soil, softly calling, “Xiao Zhi.”
Lu Zhi stopped what he was doing.
He stared at his filthy hands for a long time, when a thought suddenly and unexpectedly surged into his mind.
He thought, how could they be so dirty?
Lu Zhi, how could you be so filthy.
Chi Jinxian was too pure.
“What should I do,” Lu Zhi picked up a dead rose from the ground, his voice hoarse and broken, “I can’t keep them alive.”
“What should I do.”
On Thursday, having spent enough time at home, Lu Zhi returned to class as usual.
When he pushed open the back door and entered, Chi Jinxian suddenly felt his eyes sting. He called out, “Brother.”
Lu Zhi glanced up at him, his expression icy cold.
After a moment, he lowered his gaze and wordlessly pulled out his chair to sit down.
“Brother, are you okay?” Chi Jinxian gripped the edge of his desk, saying, “You’ve been ignoring me these past few days.”
“I’m fine.” Lu Zhi pulled out a textbook and opened it, saying, “Turn back around.”
Seeing that Lu Zhi seemed relatively stable, Chi Jinxian didn’t press about what had already happened. He obediently said “Oh” and turned around.
But in the next moment, Lu Zhi softly called out to him again: “Chi Jinxian.”
Chi Jinxian froze, slightly frowning in discomfort, not understanding why Lu Zhi had suddenly used his full name. Still, he immediately turned back and asked, “What’s wrong, brother?”
A long silence hung between them. Just as Chi Jinxian thought Lu Zhi wouldn’t speak, the other finally said, “Don’t follow me anymore from now on.”
“Why?” Chi Jinxian asked, a hint of panic in his voice. “Did I do something wrong?”
“If something’s wrong, you have to tell me.”
“I’m fine,” Lu Zhi said. “I just need you to stop following me.”
After pursuing him for three years, over a thousand days during the first two years, Chi Jinxian had heard Lu Zhi’s “I don’t like you” rejection daily.
He had never backed down then, and he wouldn’t now.
Yet, their relationship had reverted overnight to what it was two years ago.
Lu Zhi walked ahead, and Chi Jinxian followed behind.
Maintaining a distance that was neither too close nor too far, never crossing the line.
Jiang Jin felt something was off between the two and asked Chi Jinxian about it. Chi Jinxian, feeling both wronged and upset, shook his head and said he didn’t know.
When Jiang Jin turned to ask Lu Zhi, Lu Zhi remained silent with a cold expression.
This situation persisted for a week, leaving only one week until the college entrance exam.
And even this final week wouldn’t be completed at school, as they would leave campus a few days before the exam.
They would rest at home to face the exam in their best condition.
June 3rd, Monday, the Interstellar Alliance’s routine flag-raising ceremony. This would be the final flag-raising ceremony for all senior high students at this school.
To help them prepare well for the exam, school administrators delivered an inspiring speech.
Half an hour later, the flag-raising ceremony concluded, and students from all classes dispersed on the spot.
The senior students led the way back to their classrooms. As usual, Chi Jinxian quickened his pace to catch up with Lu Zhi, wanting to talk to him.
As if sensing his approach, before Chi Jinxian could speak, Lu Zhi suddenly said, “Chi Jinxian, do you really like me that much?”
His tone was different from any usual manner, making Chi Jinxian inexplicably nervous and hesitant to respond.
Yet he answered without hesitation: “I like you very much.”
“Then my goal has been achieved.”
Lu Zhi stopped walking, turned around, and looked at him indifferently.
Chi Jinxian gradually slowed to a halt, tilting his head up in confusion.
“What?”
Many people nearby, noticing something unusual happening, slowed their steps with looks of confusion or curiosity.
“I knew from the beginning you were a Beta. For me,” Lu Zhi looked at him, enunciating each word clearly, “nothing is more satisfying than watching a disgusting Beta suffer from unrequited love.”
“Can’t you really tell I’ve been toying with you?”
The morning breeze was chilly, blowing into people’s eyes and making them want to blink.
Chi Jinxian blinked several times, unable to speak.
“Today is the last day of school. We won’t see each other again after this.”
“I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t casually say ‘I like you’ anymore – it comes across as frivolous,” Lu Zhi’s expression remained completely unchanged as he continued, “and I’d appreciate it if you’d stop following me and causing me trouble. I’ve told you many times – I don’t like you.”
Chi Jinxian remained unresponsive, the breeze tousling his hair.
His clothes, his thoughts.
“A Beta,” Lu Zhi’s voice continued, “can you comfort me during my Heat Period? When there are Omegas who like me, why would I choose you?”
“Betas are all disgusting.”
