Wagging My Tail in the Ice Queen CEO’s Embrace - Chapter 43
Ming Ying suddenly felt her ears grow heavy and realized her failed spellcasting was due to her distraction, which frightened her into a panic.
“Sister! What’s wrong with my ears?!” she asked Fu Anyu, trembling.
Fu Anyu suppressed a laugh and pointed toward the bathroom.
Ming Ying hurriedly jumped off the bed and ran into the bathroom in her tabi socks. After turning on the light, she touched her ears and looked in the mirror.
Fortunately, the failed spell hadn’t caused anything terrible, it had just sprouted two extra tufts of fox fur on the tips of her ears. If left alone, they looked like thin rabbit ears, but if wetted and twisted, they resembled the ears of a caracal or lynx.
Ming Ying folded her ears, and the two tufts flipped along, looking quite comical. She couldn’t help but laugh at the sight.
After laughing, she quickly turned off the light and returned to the bedroom. Picking up her phone, she asked Fu Anyu, who was resting with her eyes closed, “If I want to undo the spell, what should I search for?”
Fu Anyu was growing drowsy again, so she took the phone, searched for the relevant content, and handed it back, saying, “I’m going to sleep for twenty minutes. Move the computer desk for me, and if you have extra energy, you can try taking the dishes downstairs.”
Ming Ying, now confident enough to move around freely, agreed immediately. She first moved the computer desk back to its place with one hand, then sat on the edge of the bed with her phone, reading about spell reversal. Within minutes, she successfully retracted the fox fur from her ear tips.
Relieved, she placed the phone beside Fu Anyu’s pillow and looked at the dishes left in the bedroom. After a moment’s thought, she released her spiritual energy to wrap and lift them, suspending them in midair, then opened the door and walked out.
Du Yunxin had long finished her work and was sitting on the living room sofa watching a drama. She was puzzled as to why Fu Anyu hadn’t called her upstairs for so long. Just as she looked up, she saw a strange woman in an orange nightgown, white pants, and white socks coming down the stairs.
The woman’s attire was odd, with metal rings bearing bells on her wrists and ankles that jingled as she walked. Her hair was so long it dragged on the ground, and most strikingly, empty dishes, the very ones Du Yunxin had delivered to the CEO’s room, floated around her!
Thinking she had seen a ghost in broad daylight, Du Yunxin let out a terrified scream, grabbed her phone to turn off the media player, and directly called Chen Yanxue.
“Yanxue, come quick!! There’s something weird on the stairs at President Fu’s house!!”
Less than ten seconds after the call went out, Chen Yanxue pulled open the screen door at the villa entrance and walked in, her left hand holding the still-connected phone and her right hand gripping a sharpened peach wood sword.
She glanced up the stairs and locked eyes with Ming Ying. After a moment of surprise, she sheathed the peach wood sword at her waist, hung up the phone, and went to the sofa to help Du Yunxin, who was cowering in the corner from fright.
Still in a state of shock, Du Yunxin instinctively pushed her away. “Why are you bothering with me? Go fight that monster!”
“That’s Ming Ying in human form,” Chen Yanxue said helplessly, stepping aside and calling up to Ming Ying on the stairs, “Sorry, I didn’t expect it to be you.”
Ming Ying stood frozen on the stairs, unsure whether she should go down. The moment Chen Yanxue entered, she had felt a wave of sword intent rush toward her, but it stopped two or three feet away before retreating entirely back to Chen Yanxue.
She thought seriously for a few seconds, then waved her hand, using spiritual energy to carry the tableware to the dining table. As the last bowl flew into place, she hurriedly ran up the stairs, slipped into the guest room, and pulled the door shut.
“You scared the little fox!” Du Yunxin snapped back to reality, tugging Chen Yanxue’s hand regretfully.
Chen Yanxue: “Who was it that called me just now saying there was something strange in the house?”
Du Yunxin immediately wore an awkward yet polite smile, put her phone away, and stood up. “I’ll go check on her.”
“I won’t go.” Chen Yanxue looked down and saw that Du Yunxin was still holding her hand, so she let go. “My sword aura would disturb the demon clan.”
…
Back in the guest room, Ming Ying was still shaken.
She had heard from Xiao Du before that the driver, Xiao Chen, was very strong, but she had assumed it was in terms of physical endurance. She never expected that the other party could also use spiritual energy.
Moreover, the sword intent Xiao Chen condensed with her spiritual energy made Ming Ying very uncomfortable, it evoked both fear and an uncontrollable urge to attack.
Sitting on the bed, feeling a bit scared, she hugged all her tails tightly. The fluffy, soft fox tails rested obediently on her arms, quickly giving her a sense of security.
Just then, the door suddenly knocked.
“Ming Ying? Little fox? Fox immortal?” Du Yunxin’s voice came from outside the door. “Open up, I’m here to bring some warmth!”
Ming Ying still trusted Du Yunxin quite a bit. Even though the latter had just screamed and called her a “strange thing” upon seeing her, the little fox, who hadn’t yet thrown a princess tantrum, got out of bed and opened the door for her.
Du Yunxin stood at the doorway holding two cups of Häagen-Dazs ice cream. When she saw that it was indeed a humanoid fox demon who opened the door, she froze for a couple of seconds.
Ming Ying felt a bit uneasy and asked, “Is my appearance, very frightening?”
“Fox immortal, please be magnanimous! I wasn’t thinking clearly earlier, my eyes were blind, and my words slipped!” Du Yunxin hurriedly handed her a cup of ice cream. “How was I to know you could transform so quickly! And you’re dressed so… seasonally mismatched.”
Du Yunxin almost blurted out “dressed weirdly,” but thankfully, she caught herself in time.
Ming Ying, her hands freezing from the ice cream cup, placed it on the desk in the guest room and blew on her chilled fingers, asking in confusion, “What do you mean by ‘seasonally mismatched’?”
“Look, you’re wearing a summer nightgown, but you’ve got winter pants on, and your arms are covered with spring/autumn sun-protection sleeves,” Du Yunxin said, handing her a spoon and opening her own ice cream lid as she ate. “Actually, you could just keep the nightgown and socks. But are you not used to exposing too much skin? Also, your socks seem a bit odd.”
“I’m really not used to it yet,” Ming Ying admitted, mimicking Du Yunxin’s actions. Finally tasting the ice cream, she took just two bites and let out a sigh of delight. “What is this? How is it so delicious! Is it ice cake?”
“It’s ice cream, vanilla flavor,” Du Yunxin said with a smile. “Since you have a light palate, I picked the mildest one. So, Fox Immortal, are you satisfied with this offering?”
Ming Ying nodded repeatedly, scooping one spoonful after another into her mouth, her eyes lighting up.
Du Yunxin took the opportunity of eating ice cream to discreetly observe her human form.
Ming Ying’s eyes were a pale red, with slightly upturned outer corners and long, slender eyelashes. When she lowered her head to eat ice cream, her lashes would occasionally flutter, giving off a subtle charm at first glance. But upon closer inspection, one would notice she was quite different from those bewitching fox spirits.
If compared to the old pop song “Green Charming Fox,” she was like a naive little fox who had just transformed into human form and emerged from her den, inexperienced in worldly affairs. Having randomly picked up some knowledge from books she found on the roadside, she now recklessly attempted to charm people on the streets.
After sizing up Ming Ying from head to toe, Du Yunxin began to hatch a little plan.
She took out her phone, pulled up the ancient-style clothing she had added to her shopping cart but never purchased, selected a few images, saved them, and showed them to Ming Ying. “Do you like clothes like these?”
The moment Ming Ying saw the familiar outer robes, wide sleeves, and waist sashes, she couldn’t look away. She set down her ice cream and reached out to take the phone for a closer look.
Du Yunxin generously handed over her phone, watching the little fox’s captivated expression with such excitement that she bit down on her ice cream spoon.
“Your hair is way too long, want me to help you style it?” Du Yunxin asked, her heart filled with envy. “You probably don’t realize that nowadays, even ‘hair reaching the waist’ is considered a luxury. With your ankle-length hair that practically sweeps the ground, just walking down the street would be enough to get you trending!”
Having just finished reading Demon Race Living Guidelines, Ming Ying was highly sensitive to terms like “trending.” Instead of feeling pleased, she was frightened and blurted out, “Then I should cut my hair short!”
Du Yunxin’s smile froze. “…?”
“I don’t want to trend,” Ming Ying said seriously. “That would disrupt social order and cause trouble for Sister.”
Du Yunxin understood the reason but was confused by the address. “Who is your sister?”
Only then did Ming Ying realize that Xiao Du didn’t know about the temporary arrangement, so she quickly explained, “The sister I’m referring to is Fu Anyu.”
She briefly outlined the temporary relationship.
Du Yunxin listened with a series of “ohs,” and by the time she looked back at Ming Ying, her eyes were crinkled into slits from smiling.
“You might not know this, but there’s a meme that goes like this,” she leaned in and said to Ming Ying. “Call her ‘sister’ during the day, and at night.”
The next three words were whispered right into the fox’s ear.
Ming Ying’s ears twitched from the breath, but she still didn’t grasp the deeper meaning of the meme. She blinked in confusion. “I don’t really understand things like ‘memes.’ Could you finish your sentence? What should Sister call at night? Takeout? Or fried chicken?”
“If you’re interested, you could read some novels or browse short video apps. You’ll get it after seeing it more often,” Du Yunxin chuckled without elaborating.
Seeing her mysterious expression and the mischievous glint in her eyes, Ming Ying immediately grew wary. She sensed that this meme was definitely not simple and quietly made a mental note to look it up online after Xiao Du left.
Or… maybe she could ask “Sister” herself?
“Ahem, back to the topic,” Du Yunxin cleared her throat. “Actually, I was exaggerating earlier. Under normal circumstances, walking around with such long hair won’t get you trending, and it certainly won’t disrupt social order. At most, you’ll just turn a few more heads on the street.”
She pulled up a few more photos to show Ming Ying some hairstyles and asked, “Which one do you like? I learned hairdressing back in school. If you want to change your hairstyle, I can cut it for you, guaranteed satisfaction!”
Ming Ying browsed through them left and right before finally picking a photo of a single low ponytail tied at the back of the head. “This one looks nice. I want it!”
Before resting, Fu Anyu had only said she would sleep for twenty minutes. But when she woke up and checked her phone, she realized two hours had already passed.
Feeling much more energized, she noticed the little fox wasn’t in the room, so she changed her clothes, got out of bed, and left the bedroom to look for the fox.
Fu Anyu walked into the hallway and found the guest room door tightly shut, with the cheerful voices of Ming Ying and Du Yunxin coming from inside.
“Come on, come on, try this one on next!”
“No more, please. The fabric of this one absorbs sweat easily…”
“Don’t you worry! These are all Fu Anyu’s old clothes, she doesn’t wear them anymore! Even if they really get smelly from sweat, we can just secretly toss them in the washing machine!”
Fu Anyu outside the door: “…”
Are these two playing dress-up while I was resting?
