Turns Out Seducing the Movie Queen Can Break the Plot - Chapter 43
“Sister?”
There was no response in the darkness. Even though the warmth in her palm remained, fear multiplied exponentially. Jiang Chi instinctively tightened her grip on Wen Wen’s hand. “Sister?”
Wen Wen snapped out of her daze and quickly composed herself, giving a light squeeze in return as reassurance. “I was just thinking about what interesting stories I could share from my past.”
“I used to be a very dull person.” Her voice trailed off, and silence once again swallowed the darkness.
An eerie quiet stretched endlessly.
The old Wen Wen had indeed been quite uninteresting. Her family was always too busy to pay her much attention, so she spent her days under the care of a nanny, having her meals prepared and being shuttled to and from kindergarten by a chauffeur.
She was beautiful, and wherever she went, people would flock to her because of her looks. But they would soon discover how uninteresting she was and quickly drift away.
The crowds around her always surged like tides swift and overwhelming, only to recede just as quickly, leaving no trace behind.
Gradually, she spoke less and less, withdrawing from social interactions. As a child, she didn’t understand what was wrong with her. After all, she never had any issues in daily life or academics.
Perhaps because of this, or perhaps because her family members were all outstanding individuals, leaders in their respective fields they took it for granted that she was capable of taking care of herself.
Even though she was just a child, barely in the single digits of age.
It was Jiang Chi who first alerted her parents to her autistic tendencies.
Like everyone else who had approached her before, Jiang Chi had been drawn in by her appearance, rushing to her side like the tide. Wen Wen remained indifferent, silently counting down in her mind, measuring the hours until this tide, too, would ebb away.
But unexpectedly, this time, the tide didn’t recede. Day after day, the sound of cheerful waves lingered in her ears, as if they would never fade.
After moving to their new home, her family remained as busy as ever. Apart from the first day, Jiang Chi had only seen her parents once and the next time was half a month later.
The moment Jiang Chi saw Mother Wen, she immediately voiced her concern, “Auntie, why doesn’t Sister ever talk to me?”
Mother Wen crouched down patiently and smiled at her. “Wen Wen just isn’t familiar with you yet, Jiang Jiang. Once you two get to know each other better, she’ll be just as warm to you as you are to her.”
“But I talk to Sister every day,” Jiang Chi said, holding up her tiny hands in front of Mother Wen. “It’s been fifteen days, and she hasn’t said a single word to me.”
Only then did Mother Wen realize the severity of the situation. She immediately took Wen Wen to see a doctor, where they learned of her autistic tendencies.
To express their gratitude to Jiang Chi, Wen Wen’s parents specially set aside a day to treat the Jiang family to a meal. At the table, Mother Wen asked Jiang Chi to be Wen Wen’s friend and play with her every day. Jiang Chi agreed without hesitation and, true to her word, became like a lark bringing happiness, arriving punctually by Wen Wen’s side each day.
Even after her parents cut back on work to take turns caring for her, Jiang Chi remained unwavering, joyfully returning to her side day after day.
Most of the time, Jiang Chi was as lively as a burning flame, while Wen Wen remained as serene as a pearl in the deep sea. Like two completely different puzzle pieces, they fit together unexpectedly yet harmoniously, shining brilliantly.
Influenced by Jiang Chi, she gradually healed, learning how to respond to Jiang Chi’s words and laughing along with her. Perhaps because of this, even more people flocked to her like the tide, but they would soon realize that she was still the same uninteresting person, only around Jiang Chi did she become lively and vibrant.
If anyone dared to call her boring within Jiang Chi’s earshot, Jiang Chi would immediately retort, “What do you know? My Wen Wen is a stunningly beautiful pearl in the deep sea. Only someone with discerning eyes like mine can see how fascinating she is. You blind fools have no right to judge!”
Whenever this happened, Wen Wen’s entire world would be filled with sunlight, warm and bright, as if even if the sky were to collapse, she could face it with a smile.
Seeing her smile, Jiang Chi would run over and pinch her cheeks, her expression still tinged with a hint of playful resentment. “Hmph, a bunch of blind people. My Wen Wen is more vibrant, beautiful, and interesting than the sun itself!”
Perhaps Jiang Chi had never truly found her boring, so Wen Wen would never know that the reason she felt alive was because she stood beside the sun.
She shouldn’t have tested it. But she had thought, maybe, just maybe, there was a slim chance that Jiang Chi had temporarily forgotten their past out of fear.
Yet in the darkness, there were only two people who both needed answers.
Perhaps sensing the heaviness in the air, Jiang Chi changed the subject. “Sister, how about I sing for you? But you’re not allowed to laugh at me if I sound bad, or I’ll never sing for you again!”
Her tone carried a hint of playful arrogance.
Wen Wen unconsciously curled her lips, then sighed silently, suppressing the waves of bitterness rising in her heart. She had promised to protect Jiang Chi, she shouldn’t let her feel afraid while staying by her side.
“Go ahead, I won’t laugh.”
They had shared too many firsts together, whether in moments of glory or embarrassment, always understanding each other best.
A melodious voice rose in the darkness, graceful and soothing, as if it could dispel the endless shadows.
[Wait, what? No one told me Jiang Chi could sing this well! Wasn’t she supposed to be all talk and no skill, the ultimate modern-day pretty face? Her singing technique is professional-level! And that voice, it’s literally my dream voice! I’m stanning!!!]
[I love this voice too! It feels so divine, like a ray of light breaking through dark clouds.]
[!!! Did Wen Wen just harmonize?? Tell me I’m not hearing things!]
[I heard it too! A match made in heaven! Suddenly, the legend of Bo Ya and Zhong Ziqi feels real!]
[I’ve been a fan of Wen Wen for years and never knew she could sing, and sing this beautifully!]
[Right? Jiang Chi really outdid herself this time. Suddenly, these two seem so compatible from looks to background. The only downside is Jiang Chi’s lack of skill. If we’re talking about who truly matches Wen Wen, my vote goes to Jiang Miao!!!]
[I think Jiang Jiang just hasn’t had the chance to shine yet. She was just held back by that trashy ex before.]
When Wen Wen’s voice reached her, Jiang Chi’s humming paused. She stopped, and another voice ceased as well, the darkness sinking into silence.
“Sis?”
“Hmm?”
“Why did you stop singing?”
“Was I singing just now?” It seemed she had unconsciously been humming along with Jiang Chi again. This used to happen frequently before. If Jiang Chi hadn’t once stopped singing while she was too immersed to notice and got caught red-handed, she might never have realized it herself.
Come to think of it, her singing ability was actually nurtured by Jiang Chi, who always praised her voice enthusiastically.
Yet she still didn’t particularly enjoy listening to or singing songs. Rather than being drawn to the melodies, it was Jiang Chi’s voice that captivated her.
“You were! Sis, your singing is so beautiful. I’ll stop, why don’t you sing for me instead?”
Wen Wen was momentarily dazed when suddenly, a light flicked on in a nearby room, accompanied by noisy chatter.
The two exchanged glances and instinctively turned toward the illuminated area.
The room was decorated like a classroom, with about twenty students dressed in uniforms sitting inside, each wearing different expressions.
Some were napping on their desks, others struggling to stay awake. One was twirling a pen while studying materials on the desk, another tossing a flashlight up and down playfully. A group of five or six girls clustered around a boy, holding various workbooks, while two others sat at adjacent desks chatting, one of them occasionally stealing glances at the surrounded boy.
Seeing the light, Jiang Chi felt as if her own world had brightened. Her eyes followed the flashlight being tossed up and down. “Sis, can we go ask him to lend us the flashlight? We’ll return it after the show ends.”
She looked like an eager child eyeing a toy.
Amused by her cuteness, Wen Wen curled her lips and casually suggested, “How about we just go in and take it?”
Jiang Chi asked seriously, “Can we do that?”
Already itching to try.
“Of course not,” Wen Wen said mercilessly.
Jiang Chi instantly deflated, her high-spirited tail drooping.
Wen Wen smiled faintly. “But since they showed it to us, it must be meant for our use. We’ll probably have to wait until the scene ends before going in to find it ourselves.”
Jiang Chi’s hope reignited. No longer fixated on the flashlight, she turned her attention to the boy surrounded by girls and whispered to Wen Wen, “Sis, that guy with all the girls around him must be the male lead of this story, right?”
Jiang Chi had never done an escape room before, but Director Xu had briefed them on the gameplay beforehand. She knew these were scripted scenes, and the people inside were NPCs acting out the story.
Director Xu had also summarized the plot for them, just one sentence, or rather, a few words: A tragedy born from unrequited love.
Their mission was to solve two mysteries: How did the male lead die? And who killed him?
Only after answering these could the guests escape the room. If their answers were wrong after escaping, they’d get one chance to return and search for clues again.
The winner would still be determined by the shortest time taken.
Wen Wen gave a slight nod, agreeing with her reasoning.
Before the two could react, a light suddenly flickered on in the corridor. Under its glow, two girls with high ponytails were pressed against the classroom window, peering inside with excited expressions.
“Wow, that must be Qin Feng, the school heartthrob! He’s so handsome, ahhh!”
“No kidding! I heard he’s also a top student!”
Another light turned on in the hallway, revealing three boys chatting on one side of the corridor, occasionally casting disdainful glances into the classroom.
“That’s the legendary Qin Feng all the girls are obsessed with? Doesn’t look that special to me.”
“Right? What’s wrong with those girls’ taste? Bunch of brainless fangirls. Hey, do you think too much romantic attention could actually kill someone?”
The third boy, who hadn’t spoken yet, was leering at Qin Feng with a sleazy expression. “Really? I think he looks quite… bedworthy. That slim waist, those full hips… just imagining it gets me going!”
Jiang Chi blinked in disbelief at the last comment, his brain short-circuiting for a second. He leaned toward Wen Wen and whispered, “Sis, from what he’s saying, does that mean he likes that guy too?”
Wen Wen analyzed rationally, “Maybe he just enjoys that kind of activity regardless of gender, focusing only on physique…” Suddenly realizing Jiang Chi’s concern lay elsewhere, she lifted her gaze to meet his clearly bewildered expression. “Do you think it’s strange to like someone of the same sex?”
