Turns Out Seducing the Movie Queen Can Break the Plot - Chapter 37.1
“Do you like it when I call you ‘wife’?” Wen Wen interlaced her fingers and lightly rested her chin on Jiang Chi’s shoulder. “You look… very happy.”
The slow upward curve of Jiang Chi’s lips froze instantly. Her gaze drifted away as she hastily schooled her expression, clearing her throat. “Huh? No, I was just thinking, if you drink two bottles of milk, we can save 10 yuan by buying two at once.”
Wen Wen narrowed her eyes. “Are you sure that’s what you were thinking?”
“Yeah, what else would I be thinking about?” Jiang Chi blinked, her eyes wide and innocent.
At this moment, Jiang Chi had no idea just how dearly she would pay for this denial in the future.
Wen Wen released her. “Fine, let’s buy two then. Like you said, saving 10 yuan is still saving.”
Too excited and nervous, Jiang Chi, who was usually hyper-aware of Wen Wen’s emotions completely missed the shift in her mood this time. Seeing her comply, Jiang Chi didn’t hesitate any longer. “Great!”
With that, she grabbed Wen Wen’s hand and pulled her back to the stall. Fishing out a hundred-yuan bill from her pocket, she waved it grandly at the vendor. “Two bottles, please! Give me 70 back!”
Her little expression was downright haughty, like a child who had finally gotten permission from an adult to buy their favorite toy.
Watching her, Wen Wen’s earlier frustration melted away in an instant.
Jiang Chi always had this ability unintentionally frustrating her one moment, then unwittingly dissolving that frustration the next, making it impossible to stay truly angry at her.
All it did was make her unbearably adorable.
Jiang Chi carefully counted the change, neatly folded it, and tucked it back into her pocket. This was the allowance Wen Wen had given her last night. Originally, Jiang Chi had wanted to hand over all her money for Wen Wen to manage, but the latter insisted that carrying some cash was practical in case of emergencies. Convinced by the logic, Jiang Chi had kept it.
After securing the money, she tore open the packaging of one milk bottle, inserted a straw, and presented it to Wen Wen with both hands as if offering some rare treasure. “Here, drink up, jiejie.”
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she yanked her hand back. “Wait, no you shouldn’t drink milk on an empty stomach! Let’s go back and eat something first. Come on.”
She looped her arm through Wen Wen’s wrist and began leading her toward their tent when a shadow suddenly fell over them. A person Jiang Chi knew all too well and loathed stood before them.
Su Jing gazed at her pitifully, her voice soft and almost coquettish. “Jiang Jiang, good morning. I’d like some milk too. Can you give me that bottle in your hand?”
If not for her upbringing, Jiang Chi would have rolled her eyes on the spot. She glanced at Wen Wen’s expression beside her, the beautiful face was tense and solemn, her eyes slightly darkened as if suppressing faint sorrow.
Even an actress as skilled as Wen Wen couldn’t fully mask the sadness radiating from her.
Just how heartbroken was she…?
The earlier joy in Jiang Chi’s heart plummeted. Abandoning her initial plan to ignore Su Jing, a trace of mockery flickered across her lips. “What, Professor Su can’t even afford breakfast milk without begging from others?”
They say the closest people know exactly where to hit you where it hurts the most. As someone who was once considered Su Jing’s closest person, Jiang Chi believed she understood him well. She knew that what Su Jing hated most was being called a gold-digging man who relied on women to climb the social ladder.
If others said such things, it would only scratch the surface of Su Jing’s pride. But coming from Jiang Chi, the very “gold-digger” in question these words struck straight to his core.
Jiang Chi hadn’t intended to be so harsh. She had hoped they could maintain a civil relationship until the show ended, after which they would never cross paths again. But Su Jing was too arrogant, convinced that her every action was just a tantrum to get his attention.
Right now, all she wanted was for Su Jing to stay as far away from her as possible especially when Wen Wen was around.
She didn’t want Wen Wen to misunderstand and think Su Jing’s affections were directed at her, then blame her for it. Jiang Chi glanced at Wen Wen’s expressionless face, a strange feeling stirring in her chest.
Strangely enough, she disliked the idea of Wen Wen being hurt because of Su Jing even more.
What was even weirder was the undeniable longing in her heart, a desire for Wen Wen’s emotions to be swayed only by her.
Su Jing’s face visibly darkened, his eyes flashing with suppressed fury. “What did you just say?”
The man who always played the role of a gentle, refined gentleman in front of the cameras had finally lost control of his expression. Finding it oddly fascinating, Jiang Chi pressed on, sharpening her tone. “What, don’t understand? I’m saying, if you’re a real man, you should think about earning things with your own hands instead of leeching off others.”
Was she afraid of pushing things this far?
Of course she was. The distance from breaking free of the plot’s control was shrinking, and she still had no idea how to completely escape it.
But she couldn’t care less. She couldn’t stand seeing Wen Wen upset over this man. If it meant Wen Wen would feel even slightly better, Jiang Chi was willing to accept the possibility of being forced by the plot to beg Su Jing for reconciliation later.
Without another word, she grabbed Wen Wen’s hand and walked away.
Su Jing clenched his fists, veins bulging on the back of his hands, and let out a cold laugh.
It seemed his recent attempts at reconciliation had only made this woman grow more audacious.
He took a deep breath. Endure it, Su Jing. Just endure it a little longer. Focus on the marriage plans first.
Back in the tent, Jiang Chi studied Wen Wen’s expression before cautiously venting, “See what I mean, sis? He even tried to take a bottle of milk from me without caring whether I’d had any. Today it’s just milk, who knows what it’ll be tomorrow? Someone that selfish, arrogant, and conceited is no good match. I was blind before, but now I’ve come to my senses. You must be happy for me, right?”
Instead of answering, Wen Wen countered, “What made you suddenly wake up?”
Jiang Chi froze mid-chew, the bread lodging in her throat. She broke into a violent coughing fit. Wen Wen stood and patted her back, sighing in amusement. “A question like that scared you?”
Of course it did, Jiang Chi thought. If she told the truth, Wen Wen would probably think she’d lost her mind.
More importantly, she suddenly wasn’t sure if her current actions counted as using Wen Wen…
And if they did, would Wen Wen understand?
When her breathing finally steadied, Jiang Chi casually grabbed the nearby milk and gulped it down noisily. After finally soothing her throat, she looked at the milk bottle in her hand and said somewhat sheepishly, “Sorry, sis, I drank your milk. How about I keep this one, and you take the other unopened bottle? They were both bought for you anyway.”
Wen Wen glanced at her, took the milk bottle from her hand, and said calmly, “It’s fine. I don’t mind.”
As she was about to put the straw to her lips, Jiang Chi stopped her at the last moment.
