- Chapter 19 - The Third Transmigration
Jiang Ming’s usually well-behaved and sensible younger daughter, Jiang Yuxi, seemed to have taken the wrong medicine today. After hearing the startling bang from within the crowd, she turned to look at her biological father, whose mouth was covered in blood.
She was so excited she began dancing and waving her hands.
“Daddy’s mouth has blossomed! Daddy’s mouth has blossomed!”
Liu Yi’s heart went cold. She hurriedly reached out to cover Jiang Yuxi’s mouth. Unexpectedly, the sudden pull and sway made the already disoriented Jiang Yuxi feel dizzy; a wave of nausea rose in her throat.
She opened her mouth Urgh!
A mess of multicolored filth spewed out, covering half of Liu Yi’s body. The sour, rancid smell was nauseating in the extreme.
Perhaps it was also a coincidence. At that very moment, a servant in the distance finally lit the fireworks.
Bang!
Dazzling, brilliant fireworks rose into the air, blooming like flowers in the enchanting night sky, seemingly applauding the family’s absurd display.
Jiang Weilu leaned her shoulder lazily against the doorframe of the living room. She didn’t join the excitement in the courtyard, keeping her distance from the crowd. She looked up at the soaring fireworks, her “peach blossom” eyes narrowing slightly as she wore a gentle, kind smile.
The fingertips resting lightly on her arm were clean; the red debris was no longer there.
It was her doing, indeed. Elder Jiang hadn’t given her a drink at all; the red bottle was something she had swiped from upstairs and filled with watered-down wine. Jiang Ming’s cigarette case had originally been well-stocked; she had quietly removed the cigarettes herself.
If Jiang Yuxi hadn’t come to provoke her, then nothing would have happened. But people often can’t resist the greed in their hearts. Once someone tastes the thrill of being a bandit, they can’t help but try a second time. At such a young age, she was both wicked and stupid.
So, Jiang Weilu didn’t mind giving her a push. She had feigned a bit of a struggle to scare her, causing Jiang Yuxi to drink the wine on the spot and successfully allowing her to “rob” the cigarette case full of firecrackers. She had even accounted for the psychology that Jiang Yuxi wouldn’t secretly light them but would instead go to Jiang Ming to claim credit.
Fortunately, the actors’ performances were superb, providing her with a show worthy of applause.
“Sister” was right. It wasn’t hard to turn an open hand into a hidden one. Calculating the human heart wasn’t hard. Fighting back wasn’t hard. But as for being kind…
Jiang Weilu frowned slightly, then narrowed her eyes and smiled again. If Sister likes it, then it doesn’t seem too hard for me to pretend to be kind.
Leaning alone in the deserted corner, Jiang Weilu smiled faintly as she thought of the person she missed so dearly. She didn’t realize that this scene had been completely captured by another person, making their skin crawl.
Li Yunmu was outspoken and never liked to join in on the crowd’s excitement. So, while everyone was out watching fireworks, she happened to be hiding in the hall. Thus, she unexpectedly saw Jiang Weilu.
The hot-blooded girl couldn’t help but rub her arms. “Holy crap, don’t smile like that! It’s freaking creepy.”
Yet, she was still a teenager at heart. Li Yunmu glanced at the mess currently unfolding in the distance and found it fascinating. She sidled up to Jiang Weilu and nudged her chin toward the yard, her eyes glinting with mischief.
“Was it you? You’re freaking awesome! I thought you were a little white flower, but it turns out you’re a big gray wolf.”
The fireworks and crackers were still going off in the distance, dyeing half the sky red. Jiang Weilu leaned lazily against the doorframe, shot Li Yunmu a sidelong glance, and smiled with elegant gentleness.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t be like that, Sister!” Li Yunmu pressed closer shamelessly. “Teach me, too. When I go back, I can have some fun with my own old man.”
?
Jiang Weilu’s eyebrows arched slightly. She didn’t know what this girl was thinking. Too lazy to deal with her, she stood up and prepared to leave. Li Yunmu hurriedly grabbed her arm.
“Hey, don’t—”
“Tsk.”
Jiang Weilu let out a soft tsk, her gaze impatient. She was still a child, after all; though her schemes were deep, she was still young. Annoyed by Li Yunmu’s persistence, her true nature momentarily surfaced. Two months of secret training with the old butler had been very effective.
She caught Li Yunmu’s wrist, twisted it back, and easily pinned her against the wall. Li Yunmu’s chubby face was squeezed out of shape by the cold, hard wall, and she howled in pain. Jiang Weilu acted as if she hadn’t heard.
She was currently in a bad mood, annoyed at herself for failing to calculate perfectly and letting this person slip through the cracks twice. Thinking this made her mood even worse. With a cold face, she leaned into Li Yunmu’s ear and whispered:
“I don’t know what you saw, but silence is a virtue, you know?”
Li Yunmu nodded frantically. Pinned to the wall, she reached out her other hand and made a zipping motion over her mouth to show her sincerity. Jiang Weilu eyed her coldly for two seconds. After confirming the person wasn’t lying, she let go and walked away.
Free at last, Li Yunmu rubbed her face and grimaced as she watched Jiang Weilu’s retreating back.
My god. How is this sister’s grip so strong? But she’s so freaking cool!
What Jiang Weilu didn’t know was that at the same time, on the other side of the mirror…
Ding.
The clock struck twelve. Shu Mengli bounced up from her soft sofa, her eyes fixed on the mirror nearby. Reassuringly, nothing went wrong. The mysterious carved full-length mirror, just like yesterday, began to emit a gentle light at midnight sharp.
The panic of her first transmigration was gone. Standing before the mirror again, Shu Mengli even felt a faint sense of excitement. This wasn’t just because she was about to embark on a miraculous journey, but because she was about to see that adorable little girl again.
With such anticipation, Shu Mengli moved quickly to set up her phone on the table, intending to record her transmigration for later study. She then picked up a glass from the table and walked toward the mirror with a light step, reaching out toward the surface without a moment’s hesitation.
The scene before her flashed. Wrapped in gentle light, Shu Mengli vanished from the spot instantly.
Clatter.
A crisp, melodious sound echoed in the silent, empty living room. The transparent glass cup kissed the floor, blooming into shattered crystal flowers.
By now, Shu Mengli had appeared in the mirror space. She looked down at her empty palm, her eyes shimmering. She confirmed one thing: it seemed the mirror space did not allow her to bring items inside.
However, she could understand… Her thoughts about the mirror space’s mechanics were cut short. Shu Mengli suddenly looked up toward the familiar corner of the water curtain.
She had only been inside for a moment, so she hadn’t noticed immediately. It wasn’t until she stood there for a bit that she finally realized something was different. Though she wasn’t completely familiar with the mirror space, she was confident she knew the small area she usually inhabited.
Thus, Shu Mengli was certain that this object had appeared for the first time. It was a sphere floating to the right of the water curtain, glowing with a soft luster like moonlight, about the size of a basketball.
Curious, Shu Mengli walked over and tapped it. The sphere shyly dodged as if ticklish, only to drift back longingly a moment later. As it swayed, the shallow layer of substance at its bottom—half water, half moonlight—rose up, dreamy and beautiful.
Strange, what is this?
Shu Mengli was puzzled, but after studying the sphere for a long time without finding an answer, she gave up. Perhaps there will be an answer next time I come in.
Just then, a voice came from the water curtain beside her, interrupting her thoughts. Startled, she realized she had forgotten her main purpose and hurried to the curtain.
The image was blurry and shaky, but Shu Mengli knew it well. She immediately knew her little mirror was currently in Jiang Weilu’s jacket pocket, peering at the world through the gap in a button.
“Can you make her shut up!”
The roar coming from the water curtain was baffling to Shu Mengli. Then, her mind raced—was he shouting at Lulu? Her heart tightened. She instinctively raised her slender hand and tapped the water curtain, urgently telling the little girl: Sister is here, don’t be afraid.
Almost instantly, a violent surge of a heartbeat echoed in the mirror space, making her ears feel hot. it showed the inner turmoil of the person carrying the mirror. Then Shu Mengli saw Jiang Weilu’s fingertip brush against the water curtain, stroking it gently twice.
The little girl knew she was here. But given how much the child depended on her, she didn’t speak immediately. Combined with the blurry, swaying image, Shu Mengli guessed that it wasn’t convenient for Jiang Weilu to talk right now.
Realizing this, Shu Mengli didn’t make a sound. She sat cross-legged before the curtain and waited quietly, observing. This close look yielded some insights.
After that initial roar, the world in the curtain fell into a brief silence. Once Jiang Weilu’s heartbeat slowed, only the sound of a child’s nonsense and a woman’s soft sobbing could be heard. The alternation between furious roars and an eerie, unsettled quiet showed that the atmosphere around Jiang Weilu was heavy.
Shu Mengli frowned, watching carefully through the buttonhole. She realized Lulu was currently in a car with her scumbag father, stepmother, and wicked sister, heading somewhere. Looking out the window, the sky was pitch black; it was night there too.
However… Shu Mengli rubbed her chin, her eyes narrowing. Jiang Ming’s state seemed a bit off. From the perspective of the curtain, Lulu was sitting in the back seat with Jiang Ming, while Liu Yi sat in the front passenger seat holding Jiang Yuxi.
Thus, Shu Mengli could vaguely see Jiang Ming’s figure. What puzzled her was that the usually handsome and cold man looked both ridiculous and strange today. A mouth swollen like a sausage was awkwardly set on his face, with faint traces of blood still trickling down. Complemented by narrow, Phoenix-like eyes that seemed ready to spit fire, he looked like a hideous clown. He seemed on the verge of exploding with rage.
Jiang Yuxi, held by Liu Yi in the passenger seat, wasn’t normal either. Though her mother held her, she was still trying to jump and play, as if she had drunk fake wine.
Shu Mengli sighed in relief; it seemed Jiang Ming hadn’t been shouting at Lulu just now. But Liu Yi was trembling from the roar, tears falling as she tightly covered Jiang Yuxi’s mouth, not daring to let her make a sound.
The atmosphere in the car was bizarrely tense, on the verge of igniting. One person was furious; others were in fear for themselves. Only Jiang Weilu looked out the window. Though her face appeared calm, the corners of her mouth were slightly upturned as she tried to suppress a smile, her eyes full of joy.
The faint, tiny vibrations from the small mirror on her chest had stopped long ago, but her heart was still tingly and itchy, filled with immense happiness.
Sister is back! She hadn’t expected her Sister to return on the way back from the Jiang ancestral house; it was a wonderful surprise.
The eerie atmosphere in the car lasted the entire way until they finally arrived at the “Little Jiang Residence.” Shu Mengli sat quietly in the mirror, her heart slightly excited as she waited to meet Jiang Weilu.
She saw in the curtain that as soon as they entered the living room, Liu Yi dumped Jiang Yuxi on a maid and tried to explain something to Jiang Ming with tears in her eyes. But the man was clearly in too much pain from his “sausage mouth”; he roughly waved her away and left. Liu Yi looked distraught, turned back to look at the drunkenly raving Jiang Yuxi in the maid’s arms, and bit her lip before leaving as well.
The people in the living room came and went quickly; it returned to silence in an instant. But the scene only paused for a moment before the surroundings began to retreat rapidly, jumping and swaying.
Shu Mengli couldn’t help but smile. Is the little girl that impatient to see me?
As it turned out, she was. Jiang Weilu ran quickly back to her room, locked the door, and threw herself onto the bed. She pulled the small mirror out of her pocket, her eyes shining with irrepressible joy. A huge, sweet smile bloomed on her face.
“Sister! You’re back!”
The scene in the water curtain became clear instantly. Shu Mengli saw the little girl’s smiling face rushing toward her. Infected by her happiness, she couldn’t help but crinkle her eyes. How nice, the little girl is getting more and more lively.
“Yes, I’m back.”
Then she remembered something and immediately asked about what happened after she left last night. At that time, she had vanished suddenly; Lulu must have been very scared alone at the snowy accident site. The joy of reunion was replaced by a faint guilt, and Shu Mengli’s voice was full of concern.
“I’m sorry, Lulu. I couldn’t say goodbye to you when I left last time.”
Jiang Weilu wore a sweet smile and shook her head vigorously. Gone was the coldness she had shown at the Jiang ancestral house. At this moment, she truly seemed like an innocent little girl.
“It’s okay, Sister! As long as Sister comes back to find me, I’m not afraid of anything!”
The simple words were so well-behaved it made one’s heart ache. Shu Mengli looked at the cute little girl in the curtain and thought: Just how badly was Lulu bullied in the Jiang family to become this soft?
She instinctively comforted her and asked, “So, when I suddenly left and you were there alone, were you scared?”
The simple question brought Jiang Weilu’s thoughts back to a month and a half ago, remembering that snowy day. She looked down, and the panic of not being able to see the other person seemed to surge back; even today, it left her with lingering fear.
The smile on Jiang Weilu’s face gradually faded. Her eyelashes lowered in a fragile arc, and her voice trembled as she uttered a single word:
“Scared.”
Scared that you would leave and never come back. Scared that I would never be able to wait for you.
Hearing that single word hurt Shu Mengli to the core. Her gaze softened immediately. But she couldn’t give a promise, nor could she do much while trapped in the mirror. She could only apologize sincerely.
“I’m sorry, Lulu. I couldn’t be by your side then, and I couldn’t even say goodbye.”
Jiang Weilu couldn’t bear to see her Sister sad. Hearing the self-reproach in the other’s voice, she immediately shook her head. “It’s okay, Sister! You came back, didn’t you? It’s just…”
“Just what?”
The sadness on Jiang Weilu’s face faded, replaced by joy. She looked at the person in the mirror and smiled brightly. “It’s just that I missed Sister so much. Without Sister, I couldn’t even sleep.”
Shu Mengli, who had been blaming herself, was suddenly amused by the sweet-talking child. “You, miss me that much?”
“Yes!” Jiang Weilu immediately showed her sincerity. “Very much, super much, every day! If missing someone could shine, then my longing would be the brightest star in the sky!”
Though it was a child’s way of speaking, she said it with absolute seriousness. Shu Mengli was tickled by the girl’s earnest and cute words, teasing her: “Then you’d become a giant lightbulb in the night.”
Jiang Weilu changed her position. She leaned the mirror against her pillow and propped herself up on the bed, holding her quilt. Her “dog-like” eyes sparkled as she looked at her Sister and answered seriously:
“That would be good, too. That way, no matter where Sister goes or how far you travel, you can easily find me.”
As she finished speaking, she finally couldn’t hold it back anymore. Jiang Weilu’s voice grew lower and lower until the final syllable was muffled against her lips, almost inaudible. The little girl slowly lowered her head and buried her entire face in the soft quilt, like a little ostrich refusing to show its face, leaving only her round, cute back of the head.
The sudden drop in mood caught Shu Mengli off guard. She blinked her beautiful eyes in confusion. What happened? Wasn’t she just happy? Though puzzled, she immediately asked with concern:
“Lulu, what’s wrong? Did something happen? You…”
The rest of the words died in her throat. When Jiang Weilu heard her voice and looked up, Shu Mengli fell silent. She saw that the exquisite little face, which had just been wearing a bright smile, was now covered in tear tracks. Those exceptionally beautiful eyes held unshed tears, like a peach blossom forest in the rain fragile, misty, and heartbreaking.
The little girl had started crying silently! This person, who just hours ago had plotted to blow up her father’s mouth, was now crying piteously. Shu Mengli’s heart melted the moment she saw her.
As a mature older sister, watching the soft, cute girl cry silently like this made her feel like her heart was breaking. “Lulu, what’s wrong? Did something happen? Don’t be afraid, Sister is here. Tell me who bullied you.”
Unexpectedly, hearing her Sister’s concern made Jiang Weilu’s tears flow even faster. The little girl bit her lip and wiped her eyes. Her “dog-like” eyes were filled with irrepressible grievance and longing, and her crying grew louder.
“Wuh… I’m not crying. I just… I missed Sister too much!”
Finally, her little voice couldn’t hold it in any longer, and she cried out between sobs: “But… but I really missed Sister! I was so afraid Sister wouldn’t come back one day.”
“Sister, I’m really good,” the child choked out. “Please don’t… don’t leave me.”
