- Chapter 10 - The Clingy Little One
The incident where Jiang Yuxi cornered Jiang Weilu in the restroom and nearly destroyed her mirror had served as a sharp wake-up call for the child. She had cast aside all negligence; her protection of the small mirror had now reached a state of ironclad vigilance.
However, the person outside her room did not intend to enter. Instead, they stood politely beyond the door and spoke.
“Eldest Miss, it is time to eat.”
The voice was aged and raspy—it was the old butler of the villa.
As it turned out, Shu Mengli and the girl had been talking for so long that neither had noticed it was already dinner time. Jiang Weilu breathed a sigh of relief and pulled the small mirror back out. She didn’t get up; instead, she sat on the bed and replied in a cool, detached tone.
“Understood.”
Yet, the very next second, as she looked down at her Sister in the mirror, she instantly switched into “obedient cutie” mode.
“Sister, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hide the mirror without considering your feelings just now. I was just afraid of losing you again.”
Shu Mengli was amused by her reaction and shook her head, offering a gentle smile of understanding. “It’s okay. In an emergency, you don’t need to worry about me. Go on, go down and eat first. We can talk more later.”
Jiang Weilu nodded obediently.
The scene within the water curtain turned dark, followed by the rustling sounds of fabric. Shu Mengli knew Jiang Weilu had tucked her into her pocket and was heading downstairs.
The Silent Meal
While eating in the dining room, Jiang Weilu maintained the same expressionless, gloomy facade she had at the main Jiang residence, but her speed was quite fast. She was practically desperate to finish so she could rush back upstairs to talk to her Sister.
This left the old butler standing by, feeling a bit puzzled. He knew the quality of his own cooking; he had even prepared himself for the “spoiled” city child to throw a tantrum because she couldn’t stomach the food. To his surprise, the Eldest Miss seemed to find it quite delicious.
The butler lowered his head and took a bite of a dish from his own bowl, instantly grimacing. Nope! That’s the same taste as always. He forced himself to swallow, but then he began to chuckle.
It seemed this child was not quite like the rumors suggested. Then again, once the word “rumor” is attached to a reputation, it is usually worth reflecting on the truth behind it.
Regardless of the butler’s thoughts, Jiang Weilu finished her meal quickly and returned to her room to find Shu Mengli, eager to be by her side. Even later, when she went to the bathroom to wash up, she brought the mirror along and set it aside, refusing to let it leave her sight.
Shu Mengli felt a mix of warmth and heartache, knowing the child was truly terrified of being separated from her. But as they talked, the night grew deeper, and the moon climbed high into the treetops.
The old clock in the living room struck twelve crisp notes, the sound echoing faintly through the villa. The noise startled Jiang Weilu, who had accidentally drifted off to sleep while fighting her exhaustion.
The child bolted upright. Her first instinct was to check the small mirror in her hand. Only when she saw Shu Mengli’s figure sitting peacefully inside did she breathe a sigh of relief and calm down.
The Fear of the Dark
Jiang Weilu had been exhausted for a long time, but she had stayed awake by sheer force of will just to talk to her Sister. Now that she had finally succumbed to sleep, Shu Mengli hadn’t woken her, wanting her to rest. She hadn’t expected the child to startle awake on her own.
Looking at Jiang Weilu’s eyes, which were bloodshot from staying up late, Shu Mengli could no longer support her sleep deprivation.
“Lulu, go to sleep now. Be good.”
But Jiang Weilu, who usually listened to everything her Sister said, shook her head repeatedly.
“No. I won’t sleep.”
“Why not?”
Jiang Weilu pursed her lips, her reddened eyes downcast to hide her emotions. She remained silent for a long moment before looking up at Shu Mengli again. By then, her gaze was misty. Her small voice was full of grievance and fear.
“I… I’m afraid that if I close my eyes, Sister will be gone when I open them again.”
Shu Mengli froze. It took a moment for her to realize that the silent departure from before had been too wounding. It had left a scar too deep in the heart of this young child. Even though they had just reunited, Jiang Weilu was already terrified of the next parting.
Helpless to control the mirror’s whims, Shu Mengli could only offer gentle persuasion. She looked at the red-eyed Jiang Weilu and let a tender smile grace her lips.
“Sleep peacefully. I might not be able to guarantee I’ll be here tomorrow, but if there comes a day when I disappear, please believe me: I will definitely come back to find you, okay?”
Perhaps it was because her Sister’s words were so warm, or perhaps her gaze was too gentle, but Jiang Weilu felt the panic and worry in her heart gradually dissolve into peace. Since Sister had made a promise, what was there to fear?
She nodded happily. Holding the small mirror, she finally drifted into dreamland under Shu Mengli’s watchful gaze. Before losing consciousness entirely, she didn’t forget to respond to the promise in a muddled, sleepy voice.
“Then I will… always wait for Sister.”
With that, she fell into a deep sleep.
Morning Light and Hidden Shadows
Shu Mengli sat cross-legged before the water curtain, her face resting in her hands as she watched the child’s peaceful sleeping face. Eventually, she laughed and lay back on the floor of the mirror space.
The hard, dark ground made her groan in discomfort, but she couldn’t help but laugh after a sigh. She looked up into the darkness, thinking that being back here and seeing Lulu was truly wonderful. Otherwise, running away after making a promise—giving someone hope only to leave them stranded would have been a terrible thing to do. Lulu would have been so heartbroken.
But… Shu Mengli rolled over on the dark floor. I really want a soft bed! I want to sleep too! Dammit, this mirror space has absolutely nothing!
The Next Day, 7:00 AM.
When Jiang Weilu startled awake and rushed to check the mirror, the first thing she saw was Shu Mengli wearing strawberry pajamas, sleeping sprawled out in every direction inside the mirror. She couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Sister is so cute!
Then, she finally noticed the clothes. It was strange—Sister had changed clothes after she disappeared. Was it an “Elf Power”? She pushed the thought aside as the person in the mirror began to stir.
Shu Mengli climbed lazily from the floor of the mirror space, rubbing her aching back. She looked up to see Jiang Weilu already awake and looking at her happily. She let out a lazy yawn.
“Lulu, you’re up so early. Good morning.”
Jiang Weilu’s face was lit with a massive smile, her beautiful peach-blossom eyes shining. “Good morning, Sister! I want to show you something.”
“Hmm? What is it?” Shu Mengli asked, confused.
Jiang Weilu didn’t answer immediately. She threw off the covers and walked barefoot to the windowsill. With an air of mystery, she opened the window and pointed the small mirror outside.
Before Shu Mengli could ask again, she saw the scenery outside and was momentarily lost for words.
Large, goose-feather snowflakes were drifting down, dotting the air like pale stars falling into the mortal world. Before long, they had covered the ground in a thick, feathery blanket.
Jiang Weilu’s soft voice came through the water curtain. “It’s snowing, Sister.”
The heavy snow had come exceptionally early this year, making her feel lucky to watch the first snowfall with her Sister. Shu Mengli had been born in the southern water regions and had almost never seen snow as a child. Even after moving to cities for university and work where it snowed more often, she still found it miraculous. Her eyes lit up instantly.
“Wow! It’s beautiful!”
Jiang Weilu, conversely, felt quite the opposite. Having grown up in the Imperial Capital, no amount of snow was a novelty to her. She wasn’t looking at the snow; her entire attention was on the excited Guardian Miss in the mirror. She couldn’t help but think: Sister is so cute! Well, she’s an elf, so it’s not strange that she’s never seen snow.
While Jiang Weilu was lost in her thoughts, Shu Mengli, looking through the water curtain, suddenly narrowed her eyes.
She saw an old man in the courtyard wearing black casual clothes, moving flower pots into the house. Based on Lulu’s description, this was likely the old butler.
However, something startled her. The butler’s hand seemed to slip, and he accidentally knocked over a pot. As it plummeted toward the ground, its fate of shattering seemed certain. But in the next second, the old butler bent down and reached out—his movement was so swift it left an afterimage. He caught the pot with ease.
Shu Mengli was astounded. That agility and strength did not belong to an old man. In fact, most young people couldn’t pull that off.
She stroked her chin, her eyes narrowing as she considered the scene. It seems this old butler is not as simple as he looks.
“Does Sister like the snow?” Jiang Weilu’s voice broke her train of thought.
She snapped back and looked at the drifting snowflakes. “I do! Do you like it, Lulu?”
Jiang Weilu tilted her head and thought about it. The honest answer was that she didn’t. In fact, she hadn’t liked anything since she was born. But things were different now. Now, she had her favorite, one-and-only Sister in the whole world. If Sister liked it, then she liked it too. It felt as if liking the same things brought her closer to that person.
And so, Jiang Weilu lied without a hint of hesitation. Looking at her Sister, she replied with a beaming smile:
“I like it too.”
