Chapter 42: The Mad Dog Lead
The news that Kou Yan and Yan Ye nearly came to blows over Sang Jing eventually spread through the elite social circles. Surprisingly, many young heirs expressed their understanding.
“If a fight is all it takes to make Sang Jing my wife, I’d throw down too! She’s beautiful, gentle, and capable. Who wouldn’t love her?” one remarked.
“True, but besides those two super-giants, who else is actually worthy of her? Given Jing-Selection’s trajectory, she’s destined to be a tycoon in her own right,” another added. “Besides, is President Yan even a match for her? I heard he… finished in minutes with that other girl. There might be some functional issues there. Not a good fit.”
When Mrs. An saw these comments in her social feed, she was consumed by fury. The girl she despised was being worshiped as a goddess! Moreover, Yan Ye was supposed to be the An family’s connection—An Siyuan’s fiancé. Even if he broke it off, it shouldn’t be for Sang Jing!
Mrs. An summoned An Siyuan home. Seeing her daughter’s heart entirely set on her career, her disappointment boiled over. “Siyuan, you’re becoming just like Sang Jing! You’re almost thirty. Who are you going to marry if you stay in the office all day? Have you really given up on President Yan?”
An Siyuan looked at her mother. Once, she had been intimidated by this elegant, high-class woman. Now, she just saw someone pitiable. “Mom, I don’t want anything to do with President Yan. Besides, after what happened at the hotel with Wu Lingshan, he’s not fit for anyone, let alone sister Jing.”
“Sister? She’s just a shopkeeper!” Mrs. An sneered. “Once others copy her little app, she’ll go bankrupt in an instant.”
An Siyuan sighed. “You don’t understand. What she’s doing is changing the world, opening up millions of jobs. She is worth admiring. One day, the country might even give her an award.”
“If that day ever comes,” Mrs. An scoffed, “then I’ve truly underestimated her.”
…
The National Stage
A few days later, Mrs. An was on the phone with her sister, mocking Sang Jing’s “online shop,” when the television news caught her attention.
“…Jing-Selection, an emerging enterprise, has set a benchmark for entrepreneurs. It has directly or indirectly provided tens of millions of jobs. Therefore, the Ministry has selected Jing-Selection as an Outstanding Enterprise of the Year. Let us welcome the representative, Sang Jing, to the stage!”
Mrs. An watched, paralyzed, as Sang Jing walked onto the stage in a sharp black suit, accepting the award with grace and poise. The phone slipped from her hand.
This was an award the An Group had coveted for years but could never reach because of giants like Lin and Chen. Now, the girl she called “low-class” had achieved it. For the first time, Mrs. An’s hostility turned into cold, hard fear. She realized Sang Jing had reached a height she could never touch.
…
The “Mad Dog” Sabotage
While Sang Jing didn’t care about Mrs. An, she was focused on the Lunar New Year Goods Festival. She wanted to bring the “flavor of New Year” back to people by sourcing local specialties from across the country.
However, Yan Ye was becoming unhinged. He hated that Sang Jing was flying so high and out of his control. He wanted to “clip her wings” so she would have to rely on him. Using the immense influence of the Yan family—which dealt in vital national imports and exports—he began blocking the Jing-Selection. He pressured major New Year goods manufacturers to reject Sang Jing’s invitations.
These manufacturers wanted to join, but they were terrified of the Yan family’s power.
When Sang Jing realized Yan Ye was using such “brainless” villain tactics, she was furious. “He really thinks he can play ‘The CEO who destroys the world’ just because he’s unhappy?”
She discussed it with her father. They planned to use their funds to lobby Yan’s company board and elders to rein him in. But before they could act, Sang Wei brought strange news.
“Kou Yan has moved. He’s started aggressively cutting into the Yan Group’s civilian import/export business. He’s essentially starting a trade war to distract Yan Ye.”
…
A Different Kind of Dinner
Sang Jing invited Kou Yan to dinner to find out why. He arrived with the Husky puppy, which had its own little chair and a gourmet meal.
“You’re spoiling him,” Sang Jing noted, looking at the dog.
“He’s cute,” Kou Yan replied, his eyes softening. “You were right. I should have gotten a pet sooner. It helps.” Then, his gaze hardened as he looked at her. “I heard Yan Ye was trying to stop your festival. Since you chose your career, I couldn’t let him kill it. Did he think I was dead?”
Sang Jing felt a bit awkward. “I could have handled it, but… thank you. If you need anything from Jing-Selection, just send me your cart. I’ll pay.”
Kou Yan let out a low, vibrating chuckle. “Oh? Am I a ‘kept man’ now?”
Sang Jing coughed. “That’s not what I meant.”
The atmosphere turned surprisingly relaxed as Kou Yan spent the rest of the night showing her videos of the Husky being a “derp.” Sang Jing realized that while Yan Ye was devolving into the “Mad Dog” villain of the original book, Kou Yan was actually becoming… human.
By helping Sang Jing, Kou Yan had become the most powerful shield against the “original plot,” ensuring that the “Mad Dog” lead couldn’t touch her.
