Chapter 12: The APP Goes Live (Part II)
On a late summer evening at 8:00 PM, while most people saw it as just another ordinary Tuesday, for the employees of Sang Jing’s company, it felt like the day that would decide their fate.
The staff had mostly been headhunted—people whose careers had plateaued or who had clashed with previous management. They were attracted by the high pay, but after a month, the initial excitement for many had turned into gnawing anxiety.
Xiao Wang from the Procurement Department was particularly terrified. Over the past month, he and his colleagues had traveled across the country, signing contracts and handing out tens of millions in deposits. The more deals he signed, the more he doubted. Who in their right mind would buy these things over the internet?
As 8:00 PM approached, he watched his colleagues frantically downloading the internal test version and shopping. To him, it looked like a cult. He suspected the company was a pyramid scheme—forcing employees to buy products first, then pressuring them to recruit friends and family to do the same until the bubble burst.
At one minute to eight, the office fell silent. The final ten seconds were counted down in a collective roar.
3… 2… 1… Go!
“Jing-Selection” appeared on major app stores. Homepage banners flickered to life. But for the first few minutes, the numbers were grim. Xiao Wang listened to the data analyst reporting the download count; the numbers were so low the analyst’s voice wavered with disappointment.
“Why is no one downloading?” “If the numbers stay like this, we’ll never sell the inventory we signed for.”
Xiao Wang’s fear finally peaked. In a room full of people holding their breath, he suddenly stood up. All eyes turned to him as he looked at Sang Jing.
“President Sang, if I resign right now, can I still get the performance bonus for the deals I closed this month?”
His words were like a bucket of ice water dumped over the collective spirit of the room. A murmur broke out. “How can he quit now?” “If he goes, others will follow.”
Sang Jing looked at Xiao Wang calmly. She knew he had good skills but a weak heart. She had expected some turnover, though the timing was dramatic.
“Of course,” Sang Jing said, her voice steady. She nodded to the HR Manager. “The HR Manager is free. Take him to complete the paperwork. Your bonus will be calculated and paid within three working days.”
Xiao Wang was stunned. He expected a plea to stay. Now that it was happening, a sliver of regret touched him, but he couldn’t take it back. As he walked toward the door, he thought, Better to leave a sinking ship now than wait for the crash.
Sang Jing scanned the room. “If anyone else wants to leave, go now. This is a two-way choice. We don’t want anyone here who is only staying out of fear.”
Another person stood up, bowed to Sang Jing, and followed Xiao Wang.
As Xiao Wang was signing his final papers, the HR Manager’s phone rang. “Is the resignation done? Get back here! The downloads are spiking! Customers are actually buying!”
Xiao Wang watched the manager sprint back to the main hall. He looked at his resignation letter, his mind reeling. Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?
…
The Leap of Faith
At 8:00 PM, Wu Xiao was on the subway. He was a 5,000-yuan-a-month salaryman, currently stressed about his upcoming wedding. He and his girlfriend had been together since high school, but they were currently stuck on the issue of a car.
His future mother-in-law had been firm: “A car isn’t for us; it’s for my daughter and your future child. You can’t have a pregnant woman squeezing onto a crowded bus.”
Wu Xiao had saved 80,000 yuan. He wanted a decent car—something usually priced around 100,000—but with insurance and fees, it would cost him over 120,000. He was just about to text his girlfriend to give up and buy a cheap 60,000-yuan car when he overheard two commuters talking.
“Look at this trashy ad on the sports forum,” one laughed. “It says a 100,000-yuan car is now only 80,000, including all fees, first-year insurance, and a dashcam. What a scam! Why don’t they just give me the factory for free?”
Wu Xiao’s heart skipped a beat. He leaned over. “Where is that ad from? A new dealership?”
“No, there is an app called ‘Jing-Selection.’ Don’t bother, it’s definitely a scam.”
Wu Xiao downloaded the app anyway. He checked Weibo; “Jing-Selection” was already floating on the trending list.
He opened the app. Right there, below the main banners, was the “Automobile Event.”
It was the exact car he wanted. The app claimed a direct subsidy of 20,000 yuan, plus free insurance and accessories. Total cost: 80,000 yuan. There was only one available per day.
The subway reached his stop, but Wu Xiao didn’t move. He stood on the platform, his thumb hovering over the “Buy” button. His mind was a battlefield. Is this a scam that will steal my life savings, or is this the miracle I need?
One minute passed. It felt like a century. He was terrified someone else would snatch it while he hesitated.
Thirty seconds later, he closed his eyes and pressed [Purchase].
