- Chapter 20 - The Second Banquet
Familiar Comforts
In some respects, Elias and Julian were remarkably similar, yet they remained easy to distinguish. Both would personally prepare meals for Sirius, but the difference lay in their intent. Julian cooked to make him happy or perhaps to please him.
Elias was different.
He insisted on doing everything for Sirius’s own good, claiming his cooking was tastier than a robot’s and healthier than a food converter’s. In reality, robots had a wider repertoire and food converters restructured molecules for precision; both were technically superior to Elias’s handiwork.
This emotional attachment likely stemmed from the fact that Elias was most familiar with Sirius as a hatchling. Consequently, he still treated him as a junior in most situations. However, being with Elias reminded Sirius of recent events, bringing about a sense of moral transgression that was difficult to articulate.
Julian was better.
Sirius thought this as he ate a small amount of food, declined Elias’s invitation to stay longer, and headed back to his own home. He lived in a circle reserved for solitary males. Some were those who had not yet chosen a primary spouse, while others, despite having one, preferred their own space and lived alone by choice.
To ensure the privacy and tranquility of the males, Zerg law dictated that females could not enter or leave male residential areas at will. Unless a male gave explicit permission, only a primary spouse was allowed entry. These policies, which favored males both openly and subtly, were all connected to the Council. At yesterday’s gathering, the Councilors had told Sirius a great deal.
Sirius knew what they meant. They were simply telling him how powerful they were and how great the organization was, essentially instructing him to be obedient and follow their lead. Perhaps there was also a hint of showing off.
Standing outside his door, the male closed his eyes and told himself to get used to this. After all, this was the daily life of a high-ranking male. When he opened his eyes again, he appeared to have recovered his composure. He pulled the door open, and a happy female came running toward him.
“Master, you are back!”
The female asked no questions. He led Sirius back into the house and began a harsh critique of the robot downstairs, begging Sirius to file a complaint against it. Sirius humored him but did not actually file a complaint. Instead, he simply submitted another report stating that Julian had permission to pass freely. Julian did not pay much attention to this and moved on to other topics.
“And the household robots! When Master was here, they said I was stealing their jobs. But when Master was away and I stopped competing with them, they went on strike again!”
“Master, look at Julian’s hand.”
His long, fair fingers were slightly bruised. It seemed the burn was indeed severe, penetrating the surface skin to reveal the original color of the blood. It should have been a strange sight, but unexpectedly, that small patch of bluish-green made his fingers look even more delicate and white. Sirius could not resist taking his hand and gently rubbing it.
“My hand is so itchy!”
Julian laughed and burrowed into Sirius’s embrace, hugging his waist and pushing him down to sit on the sofa. It seemed Julian had a special fondness for the sofa, always wanting to start things there.
Sirius gently patted Julian’s back. The female in his arms smelled faintly of roses. Since the last time, his body was always filled with the scent of roses. Only after he completely calmed down could the two of them continue talking.
“Master,” Julian said with a hint of resentment, “it is always like this. How can Julian conceive an egg? Do not tease me on purpose!”
In the Zerg race, anything that did not reach the reproductive sac was considered useless. Although the process was comfortable, without the desired result, it was as if nothing had happened. The female looked down at himself with quite a bit of worry.
Sirius remained silent. He felt a sense of pity for Julian, but in Julian’s eyes, it appeared entirely different. Previously, Sirius might have felt a sense of sorrow, but now, aside from helplessness, it was difficult for him to feel any other intense emotions. This was a good sign; perhaps it proved he had finally integrated into the Zerg.
Integrated.
He should have integrated long ago. He should have been like this from the start. Yet, for some reason, the thought of that word still made his heart twitch. However, Julian soon diverted his attention, and Sirius did not continue to ponder why.
The tail hook was held in the female’s arms, kissed and savored.
“Julian, pull back your teeth.”
The tail hook coiled and curled together. Amidst the warmth, there were always some bumps and scrapes. Julian did not speak, and it was unclear if he even heard. His throat moved, and the tip of the tail hook glided again.
“Why have you stopped talking? Are you conceiving an egg, Julian?”
“Mmm, Master.”
Julian’s hand rested on Sirius’s shoulder as Sirius leaned back. It seemed he had brushed against something foreign, and Sirius slowly pressed against it.
After agreeing to return to the film set, Julian was absent for another day. This time, Sirius was truly tired. He embraced the finally quiet female from behind as they snuggled together. The industrious household robot thoughtfully brought over a blanket and began cleaning up silently.
Time moved to midday, and the sun reached its highest point in the sky. These man-made suns existed on every planet, their size determined by the size of the world. They were spheres that only emitted light and heat, rising and setting according to a unified time, bringing a synchronized schedule to the vast Zerg territory.
Julian was the first to wake. His unconscious movements woke Sirius behind him. Sirius had another banquet to attend today. But this one was different; it was not just a male gathering, but a welcome reception for the fleet.
At this banquet, he was to formally meet Victor for the first time and then date him. One could put it that way. In short, Sirius was to win over Victor and pull him into the male camp.
The Council had tried many times before, but these commanders were extremely intelligent. Even if a male managed to marry them using the position of a primary spouse, these military Zerg remained firm in their views, refusing to yield because of a male’s status.
Military power remained in their hands. It seemed they knew that if they lost power, the opportunistic males would surely suppress them further, perhaps lowering the legal status of females even more.
But high-ranking military Zerg were very clear-headed, and Victor was especially cunning. Perhaps that was why, even though Victor was older now and might be easier to break, no male was willing to try. But now, they had a laboratory guinea pig.
Young males had potential, but it was only potential. They were willing to welcome an excellent high-ranking male, but that did not stop them from treating Sirius as a convenient tool. If he did not want to be the tool, Sirius had to become the hand that held it.
“Hi, Sirius, over here!” From a distance, Sirius saw the Councilor waving as he stepped out of the hovercar. Sirius immediately put on a smile and walked quickly toward him.
“Councilor, and” After greeting him, Sirius naturally looked at the other males beside him, showing a slightly puzzled expression.
“These are the other Councilors, Sirius. Let me introduce you.”
Corresponding to the military department, there were also eleven Councilors. Eight were males from the Central Star, and three were from other star systems. This showed why the Councilor was so proud. Not falling behind the military, the status of males rising continuously, and the protection of the power of Central Star males were each a source of his pride.
The Councilor was surrounded by the others, but he affectionately called Sirius to his side. “Sirius also grew up on the Central Star. I wonder if you remember the male who survived against all odds?”
The other Councilors thought for a moment. “Oh, yes! I remember. The poor little Zerg who lost his father, right?”
“Everyone said his mental power had lost its vitality. We thought it was a dead egg, but unexpectedly, a healthy little Zerg emerged?” One Councilor seemed to recall with difficulty, looking at Sirius and the Head Councilor with admiration. “So it was that male. No wonder Sirius is appreciated by the Head Councilor. It is truly rare!”
He praised Sirius’s resilience and briefly complimented the Head Councilor’s eye for talent. If Sirius had not known his own history so well, he would have thought the man truly did not know beforehand. They had clearly investigated his background long ago.
After Sirius had agreed to the Head Councilor’s request, they must have checked his files. Now they were pretending not to know, and Sirius had to pretend he saw through nothing.
“You praise me too much.” Sirius was not overly modest, as the Zerg did not like modesty. “That is all in the past. I do not even have a strong impression of it. I hope to gain a different kind of reputation in the career that follows.”
“Hahaha, certainly! The Head Councilor thinks very highly of you. Giving you such an important task shows we have great expectations for you. As long as a breakthrough can be made, other things will become easier.”
“Exactly! That Victor is an old female. A young and excellent high-ranking male like you, how could you fail to control him?”
Several males winked at Sirius with knowing looks and laughed loudly. As the center of the topic, Sirius merely looked at them with a smile, but in places where the others could not see, he was exceptionally cold. He did not like Victor much, but he disliked other males making these kinds of jokes about him even more.
Then he would use this man as his starting point; he would take him down. Sirius smiled as he looked at the ringleader who was laughing the loudest, a round-bodied male with yellow hair. He was also the one who had first made jokes about Julian.
Sirius stared at him for a few extra moments before shifting his attention back to the matter at hand. “Councilor, if I suddenly introduce myself to a stranger in the military, will it not be too strange?”
“Do not worry, Sirius. I am glad you have thought about this carefully. Actually, I have thought of it as well. You will be acting as my Chief Secretary, specifically responsible for the ground support matters of the newly arrived Sixth Fleet.”
This included energy resupply, fleet placement, and the handover arrangements for the members of the two fleets when the Seventh Fleet returned.
“Do not worry, just leave it to me.” The Head Councilor comforted Sirius somewhat absently. His eyes shifted, and his voice suddenly became excited. “Oh! Sirius, look! That female has arrived!”
