- Chapter 112.1 - Lu Sheng & Qi Zhenshu Side Story: The End
The second year of Changlong, September.
The sun rose above the horizon, casting a bright light across the land.
Tangtang opened her eyes, climbed out of her small bed, opened the door, and glanced towards the study. Seeing her mother reading at the desk, she happily bent her eyes and quietly opened the door, tiptoeing towards the master bedroom.
She pushed the door open and peeked inside, seeing the raised quilt on the bed. Tangtang was about to step inside when a cool voice came from behind her: “Lu Qi.”
The foot she extended immediately retracted. Tangtang turned and stood properly, honestly calling out to Qi Zhenshu, “Mother.”
“I’ll just see A-Niang and then go wash up and practice calligraphy,” Tangtang preemptively said, not waiting for Qi Zhenshu to speak.
During dinner last night, Lu Sheng felt a bit unwell and went to bed early. Tangtang missed her and wanted to come and check on her as soon as she woke up.
Of course, the main reason was to be close to A-Niang.
Ever since their family came to the capital, her mother had arranged for her to move out of the main room and sleep alone in the side room.
Qi Zhenshu could see through her own child’s thoughts at a glance.
It was understandable for a three or four-year-old to be clingy, but why was she still so fond of sticking to Lu Sheng at six?
Qi Zhenshu frowned, just about to speak, when she heard a sneeze from inside the room.
Ignoring her daughter, she took a long stride and entered the room.
Lu Sheng woke up from her dream. Before opening her eyes, she felt a tickle in her nose and couldn’t help but sneeze, which woke her up completely.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw Qi Zhenshu closing the window and walking towards the bed.
Seeing that the sky was fully bright, Lu Sheng yawned, stretched her arms, and sleepily asked, “What time is it?”
“It’s not yet Chen Shi (7 to 9 AM),” Qi Zhenshu walked over, sat by the bed, and carefully observed Lu Sheng’s complexion.
“Is it that late?” Lu Sheng spoke, propping herself up on her arms to sit up.
Usually, she got up at Mao Shi (5 to 7 AM), but today she actually slept until Chen Shi.
Lu Sheng sounded a little nasal. Qi Zhenshu felt her forehead but didn’t detect a fever.
“Is your nose blocked? Is there anywhere else you feel uncomfortable? Did you catch a chill when we went out the day before yesterday?”
Qi Zhenshu’s questions came one after another.
“It’s fine, it should be because I just woke up,” Lu Sheng puffed out her nose, her nasal passages clear. “I don’t feel uncomfortable anywhere, just a bit sleepy.”
As she spoke, she yawned again, leaning forward to rest against Qi Zhenshu’s shoulder.
“So tired,” Lu Sheng moved her head, rubbing against Qi Zhenshu’s neck. “Let’s not go climbing mountains next time.”
The weather in early autumn was clear and crisp. The day before yesterday was a rest day, and the family of three went mountain climbing on Mount Yuhuang in the suburbs for the whole day. When they returned, Lu Sheng felt sore and tired.
“Okay, we won’t go out,”
Qi Zhenshu put her arm around her, smiling as she patted her back.
She was the one who suggested going mountain climbing, but she was also the first one to complain of being tired once they were on the mountain.
“Why aren’t you at work?” As she spoke, Lu Sheng remembered that today wasn’t a holiday and it was already Chen Shi, yet Qi Zhenshu hadn’t left.
“Have you forgotten what day it is today?” Qi Zhenshu rubbed the top of her head and chuckled.
Lu Sheng raised her eyebrows, thought for a moment, and suddenly realized, “Oh my, is today the fifteenth?”
On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, Qin Feiyan gave birth to a pair of twin sisters, and today was the little ones’ full month celebration.
Last May, Princess Changning and Qin Feiyan were married, and the First Princess conspired with the Prince of Yunzhou to rebel.
The Prince of Yunzhou originally thought that the heir of the Pingxi King and Princess Changning had fallen out, and believing he had won over the Pingxi King, he led his troops south.
Unexpectedly, as soon as the Yunzhou army stepped into Shangjing Dao, they were surrounded and wiped out by the Imperial Guard army led by Qin Feiyan and the Pingxi army from both the north and south.
Without the assistance of the Yunzhou army, the First Princess was isolated and helpless in the capital. Naturally, she couldn’t stir up any trouble and was suppressed.
In August, the Empress demoted the Princess to a commoner and sentenced her to life imprisonment in the Cold Palace, while bestowing the title of Crown Princess upon Princess Changning.
For the full month celebration of Qin Feiyan’s little Imperial Granddaughters, everyone who received an invitation was expected to attend the public banquet today, so naturally, they didn’t have to go to work.
“Oh no, my head seems to be broken lately. I feel like my memory is getting worse,” Lu Sheng lamented, leaning on Qi Zhenshu’s shoulder.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Qi Zhenshu said in a low voice, patting her back. “You’ve been too tired recently.”
In her second year in the capital, Lu Sheng rented a storefront and opened a liquor shop. The aroma and mellow taste of the sauce-flavored liquor were very popular, and due to the complex brewing process, no other liquor shop has been able to brew liquor with the same flavor as the Lu Family Liquor Shop for the past three years.
The Lu Family Liquor Shop’s business boomed. This year, Lu Sheng saved enough money and bought a shop in the capital.
Last year, Qi Zhenshu achieved the rank of Tanhua (third place) in the Imperial Examinations and became a judge in the Dali Temple. Except for rest days, she had to go to work every day, so Lu Sheng managed the liquor shop’s affairs alone.
From buying the storefront to renovating, decorating, and hiring staff, Lu Sheng was busy for two or three months before finally opening the new shop.
She only relaxed last month when the shop hired a manager.
“If you’re still sleepy, sleep a little longer,” Qi Zhenshu coaxed softly.
Lu Sheng nestled into her shoulder and shook her head, “Just let me lean on you for a bit, then I’ll get up.”
She squinted and rubbed against her, her wife’s fair neck in front of her. Lu Sheng felt playful and was about to take a bite when the corner of her eye caught sight of her daughter peeking into the room from the doorway.
Lu Sheng sat up straight and smiled, beckoning to her daughter, “Tangtang darling.”
Just now, when Qi Zhenshu entered the room, Tangtang didn’t dare to follow in directly, only watching from outside. Now, seeing Lu Sheng beckon to her, she happily ran over.
Lu Sheng hugged the child onto the bed. The little girl was growing fast and took up a lot of space between them. Qi Zhenshu moved back to make room for her.
Tangtang didn’t turn to look at her mother, only faced away from her, hugging Lu Sheng’s neck and acting spoiled, “A-Niang~ A-Niang, are you feeling better?”
As her daughter spoke, she pressed her head against Lu Sheng’s forehead, just like Lu Sheng used to do when she was sick.
Lu Sheng touched her forehead and affectionately rubbed her, “Thank you for your concern, darling. A-Niang is already better.”
“Mm.” The little girl happily responded, pressing her face against hers.
“It’s getting late. Get up and eat breakfast first.”
Qi Zhenshu picked up the clothes from the low table and placed them on the bed. Then she said to her daughter, “Go wash up first. Practice your calligraphy early today. We have to go out soon.”
“Oh,” Tangtang mumbled in response, looking at Lu Sheng with great reluctance.
Lu Sheng smiled and kissed her daughter’s cheek, whispering a few words to her. The little girl instantly beamed, jumped off the bed, and happily went to wash up.
Watching her daughter’s figure disappear at the doorway, Qi Zhenshu shook out the clothes, covered Lu Sheng with the outer robe, and casually asked, “What did you promise her?”
“Nothing,” Lu Sheng, following Qi Zhenshu’s movements, put on the outer robe and replied deliberately with a playful smile.
Having been together for over three years, she could clearly see that the person in front of her genuinely wanted to know, yet habitually tried to appear nonchalant.
Qi Zhenshu helped her tie the belt, raised her eyebrows, and looked at her, waiting for a different answer.
Lu Sheng smiled and pinched her cheek, mimicking what someone had just said to their daughter, “Let’s eat first. We have to go out soon.”
She spoke and jumped off the bed, slipped on her shoes, and was about to walk out, but was pulled back after only two steps.
Qi Zhenshu hugged her from behind, not letting go or speaking, and tickled her waist.
Lu Sheng held her breath for a while, utterly unable to bear the itch, and quickly begged for mercy, “I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you.”
Qi Zhenshu stopped her hand and kissed her cheek. Lu Sheng turned her head and said, “I promised to practice calligraphy with her for a while.”
She had been too busy lately and hadn’t spent much time with her daughter.
Before the First Princess’s rebellion last year, she attempted to poison the Empress. Fortunately, Lu Sheng recalled some of the book’s plot and had Qi Zhenshu subtly warn Princess Changning.
Princess Changning took precautions early, and the Empress did not die suddenly as in the original story. Instead, she followed the clues and uncovered the mastermind behind the poisoning, who was none other than the First Princess.
Due to her merit in saving the Empress, Qi Zhenshu was bestowed a residence by the Empress.
The Lu family’s residence was not far from the Imperial Palace. After the family ate breakfast, Lu Sheng accompanied her daughter to practice calligraphy before changing into formal attire and heading to the palace.
For the Imperial Granddaughters’ full month celebration, all officials who attended court were invited to bring their families into the palace, although most people went directly to the banquet in the Imperial Garden.
As soon as Qi Zhenshu and her group entered the archway, the managing eunuch led them to the Eastern Palace.
In the main hall of the Eastern Palace, besides Qin Feiyan and the Crown Princess, there were also Qin Guanghan and his wife, as well as the Empress and the Empress Dowager.
Qi Zhenshu led Lu Sheng and her daughter to greet them.
“Tangtang is here. Come quickly and let Auntie Yang see you.”
Yang Jinlan was playing with her two granddaughters with the Empress Dowager. Seeing Tangtang approach, she quickly waved her over.
“Auntie Yang,” Tangtang smiled and called out, her eyes looking at the little Imperial Granddaughter in her arms. “Little sister is so pretty.”
Qin Feiyan’s twin daughters both inherited the Crown Princess’s delicate appearance, but their temperaments were vastly different. The elder daughter loved to smile and cry and was very lively, while the younger daughter was quiet and didn’t like to cry.
Qin Feiyan usually relied on their different actions and expressions to distinguish between the two identical children.
The little one was too adorable. Tangtang couldn’t help but reach out to touch her, and the little one, who usually didn’t like interacting with people, actively reached out and held her finger, making a few babbling sounds.
“Oh, that’s truly rare,” Yang Jinlan exclaimed in surprise. “It’s the first time I’ve seen Little Qi willing to play with someone.”
The two little Imperial Granddaughters were ranked sixth and seventh in the clan. According to royal custom, children were only named after they turned one year old, so for now, the family called the two children Little Lu and Little Qi.
The little one’s hand was soft and smelled of milk. Tangtang curled her fingers and smiled at the little one, who also giggled in response.
Her laughter drew the attention of everyone in the room.
Qin Feiyan also saw her little daughter smile so happily for the first time and clicked her tongue, winking at the Crown Princess. She joked, “Could our Little Qi have a crush on Tangtang?”
“When you grow up, how about I marry Little Qi to you?” Qin Feiyan said, smiling at Tangtang.
Tangtang let go of the little one’s hand, shook her head, and seriously replied, “I can’t. I promised Sister You that I would marry her.”
Yang Jinlan, upon hearing this, smiled and stroked Tangtang’s head, “You two little rascals speak with one voice.”
